More Of The Same
Morning,all.
A bitterly cold night at Celtic Park with the temperature plummeting to minus seven had a slightly reduced crowd watching as Celtic beat Dundee United 2-0. Goals in each half secured the points, but not before United had given us a few scares in the second half. You really have to ask yourself why Goodwin didn’t tell his players to play like that for the whole game, or at least from when they went a goal down, but we are used to teams setting up negatively against us and struggling to remember what to do when they get the ball into our half.
It was a comfortable enough result in the end but an unconvincing performance throughout. Typical really of our form in the last two months since the Aberdeen and Leipzig games. BR picked the same starting XI as Sunday, which is unusual in itself. Even more unusual is that it wasn’t the XI who took to the field! Kühn injured himself in the warm-up and Yang was drafted in as his replacement. He did well enough, showing for everything and covering more of the pitch than most, but he is still not quite there. The question is whether or not we persevere with him or sell/loan him in one of the next two windows.
Speaking of which, The Record was at it again yesterday with a wee tale designed only to unsettle one of our players. In this case, it is Engels being chased by Atalanta. I think we can safely call this out as completely fabricated pish. Engels is unable to play for a third club this season, having already appeared for Augsburg and Celtic. But that is by the by. What is important is that I thought he put in another MOTM display last night, and he is fast becoming one of our more important players. It’s a pity the fans weren’t singing his name more often, but they were busy regaling us with a Roll of Honour from the past. Everyone from Jinky to Jota. You can guess why!
To the goals then. McCowan cut into the box from the right and hit a low shot to the keeper’s left. He could only parry it into the box, and Maeda doesn’t have to be asked twice in these situations. This came after Trusty had hit the bar, but despite constant pressure and about a dozen corners, it was still only 1-0 at half time.
Second half started pretty much like the first, but that didn’t last long. United came more into the game, threatening us mainly down their left. The defenders had to be on their toes for much of the half, with our opponents not scared to shoot on sight. Schmeichel had to be really sharp on one particular occasion, which had us all heart in mouth for a few seconds. We really needed that second goal, but it didn’t look like coming.
Then it did. With only a few minutes remaining, Palma swung the ball into the box from deep on our left. Bernardo cleverly dummied it for Maeda who rolled it back towards him. Bernardo dummied it again, this time for Hatate to blast home. A really smart piece of work from all involved, but particularly Bernardo who will feel aggrieved at not even getting the assist for this one! Not that he’d be caring much, this side certainly knows what teamwork is. Note-one goal scored via a shot from outside the box. Another via an early cross from a deep position. None scored from our constant tippy-tappy stuff.
The end result sees us with three points on a night where it would have been easy enough to drop a couple. We are now sixteen points ahead of our rivals who play at Dens Park tonight. All we have to do is keep winning, because while I’m not alone in wishing for better performances, I would settle for 2-0 in every game. And certainly against Young Boys!
We move on now to an away match in Dingwall at lunchtime on Saturday. I suspect the temperature may be even worse there, but three points is what the game is all about. More of the same, please.

16 ROADS are you an evertonian, my in laws would be proud of you😎😎😎 OH WE HATE BILL SHANKLY AND IAN ST JOHN, BUT MOST OF ALL WE HATE BIG RON, AND WE’LL HANG THEM ALL FROM THE BANKS OF THE ROYAL BLUE MERSEY❤👍
A little strange if the Palma rumour is true at this moment in time. We have Forrest injured – kuhn possible injury TBC – If he does go that leaves us with Maeda and Yang as wingers. What happens if one of them two pulls up injurex. Hmmm…..
Always had a soft spot for the Toffees bp.
Think I read once though that the late, great Dixie Dean was a Freemason?
Not sure how true this is.
I’m also a Charlie Landsborough fan, believe it or not.
Went to his final gig in Ireland a few years ago.

They’re bad enough now as it. 🤯
Good evening, friends.
Delighted to see that the downward spiral has abated a little and voting numbers are back up into the low 60’s. And that’s before I remind a few lurkers (aye, you!) of their New year resolutions to join in! Still another 3 hours (almost) to get your opinions in please and hopefully the results come out before 10pm (maybe even 50+ minutes before!)

It takes a lot to surprise me, but my gast was completely flabbered. Watch this short clip to the end. It is something else.

Just tuned in to Real Madrid in SuperCup semi final.
First minute, Mbappe hits the byline, cuts it back behind the penalty spot for onrushing attacker to hit first time.
It was saved, but assuming you have a player that can hit the touchline, that move is exceptionally difficult for defenders.
Inq4 he was better than me 👍 is
Vata on left side of midfield for Watford at Fulham in a 5-4-1 formation. Bayo on the bench.

I’m pretty sure that Big Jock said something along the lines of getting to the touchline and cutting it back was the ‘best ball in the business’

Evening Brian:
I think Ancelotti must have listened to Jock, because Madrid keep doing it.😊
They also shoot on sight from outside the box. 12 shots so far by the 38th minute.

With Madrid on, can’t make up my mind whether to have managerless Everton, Fulham vs Watford, or Dundee vs the Scrofulous Hillbillies on the other screen.🤔

No, we huvnae.
Well done to all the supporters who turned up last night. It was Baltic and the atmosphere was pretty chilly too. The highlight of the night was having CCB back in his seat next to me even though there was little to cheer in the way of scintillating football. I think we understand why. All the players, ours and opposition are knackered and the support are struggling too.
CCB remarked a couple of times last night about how passes were on to go forward and players chose not to play them or didn’t see them. He said it reminded him how the game is different when seen on the telly. Maybe BR needs to have a seat in the main stand for a couple of games. He might see what we see.
INQ4 yes and what a pity, none of the wingers at parkhead and yes I mean parkhead, could not lace his boots, another true story👍👍
Perth Oz Bhoy,
Morning bhoys, , st tams you keep knocking Kyogo in my opinion Idah couldn’t lace his boots 9 million quid Norwich saw us coming. Kyogo is not getting the service he was when he played under Ange that’s why he’s not scoring goals, some the runs he makes are brilliant
but we refuse to play the over the top.
—//—//—///—////—-///—-///——//////—-////——///
POB,
I understand what you are saying about Kyogo but to my mind this is part of the problem with him. You say we refuse to go over the top. Our style suggests this is correct as we are continually going on about horse shoe football and keeping possession. So we must assume this is the instructions from the manager. Why then is Kyogo making runs for a ball over the top? He needs to be making the run he’s being instructed to ie coming short and linking the play, not doing his own thing and then shrugging when the ball doesn’t arrive. Making a great run is not a great run if it’s the wrong run.

Good point. The height and distance from the upper tiers means that you struggle to identify individual players but you get an incredible overview of the movement of the players.

Scrofulous hillbillies? FFS. 🤣I freely admit I had to look that wan up. Your description of the Huns’ support, would not have been out of place in the famous ‘Man In The Know’ Glasgow Observer article of 1924.

Having a wee bit of trouble with ESPN+ coverage of the FA cup and the Paramount + app for the Dundee game. Don’t know whether it’s weather related, as it is brutally Baltic today.
Just managed to get the Dundee game after 13 minutes.
1-0 to home side. Hope they hang on.
