More Of The Same
Morning,all.
A bitterly cold night at Celtic Park with the temperature plummeting to minus seven had a slightly reduced crowd watching as Celtic beat Dundee United 2-0. Goals in each half secured the points, but not before United had given us a few scares in the second half. You really have to ask yourself why Goodwin didn’t tell his players to play like that for the whole game, or at least from when they went a goal down, but we are used to teams setting up negatively against us and struggling to remember what to do when they get the ball into our half.
It was a comfortable enough result in the end but an unconvincing performance throughout. Typical really of our form in the last two months since the Aberdeen and Leipzig games. BR picked the same starting XI as Sunday, which is unusual in itself. Even more unusual is that it wasn’t the XI who took to the field! Kühn injured himself in the warm-up and Yang was drafted in as his replacement. He did well enough, showing for everything and covering more of the pitch than most, but he is still not quite there. The question is whether or not we persevere with him or sell/loan him in one of the next two windows.
Speaking of which, The Record was at it again yesterday with a wee tale designed only to unsettle one of our players. In this case, it is Engels being chased by Atalanta. I think we can safely call this out as completely fabricated pish. Engels is unable to play for a third club this season, having already appeared for Augsburg and Celtic. But that is by the by. What is important is that I thought he put in another MOTM display last night, and he is fast becoming one of our more important players. It’s a pity the fans weren’t singing his name more often, but they were busy regaling us with a Roll of Honour from the past. Everyone from Jinky to Jota. You can guess why!
To the goals then. McCowan cut into the box from the right and hit a low shot to the keeper’s left. He could only parry it into the box, and Maeda doesn’t have to be asked twice in these situations. This came after Trusty had hit the bar, but despite constant pressure and about a dozen corners, it was still only 1-0 at half time.
Second half started pretty much like the first, but that didn’t last long. United came more into the game, threatening us mainly down their left. The defenders had to be on their toes for much of the half, with our opponents not scared to shoot on sight. Schmeichel had to be really sharp on one particular occasion, which had us all heart in mouth for a few seconds. We really needed that second goal, but it didn’t look like coming.
Then it did. With only a few minutes remaining, Palma swung the ball into the box from deep on our left. Bernardo cleverly dummied it for Maeda who rolled it back towards him. Bernardo dummied it again, this time for Hatate to blast home. A really smart piece of work from all involved, but particularly Bernardo who will feel aggrieved at not even getting the assist for this one! Not that he’d be caring much, this side certainly knows what teamwork is. Note-one goal scored via a shot from outside the box. Another via an early cross from a deep position. None scored from our constant tippy-tappy stuff.
The end result sees us with three points on a night where it would have been easy enough to drop a couple. We are now sixteen points ahead of our rivals who play at Dens Park tonight. All we have to do is keep winning, because while I’m not alone in wishing for better performances, I would settle for 2-0 in every game. And certainly against Young Boys!
We move on now to an away match in Dingwall at lunchtime on Saturday. I suspect the temperature may be even worse there, but three points is what the game is all about. More of the same, please.

I’ll live to be a 100 and never be able to understand how the Huns turned us over and scored 6 goals in 180 mins against us.
Bonkers.

Other managers playing against the zombie club, study how they play – do their homework,so to speak.
We obviously didn’t, because we deployed the exact same tactics against them in the Ipox game as we did in the Hampden game.
Dundee aren’t playing the same way against the zombies as they did against Dundee United.
Horses for courses and all that there.
Sheer arrogance from our management team if you ask me.

Hi San Luis:
You just need a midfield of 4 or more to run en masse at our midfield, and you could drive a Ben Hur fleet of chariots through the gaps. Sevco’s midfield outnumbered us 5 to 3. Hatate, Callum and McCowan are slow as molasses, have no recovery pace, and can’t tackle a haddock supper. I am really concerned that Young Boys could exploit that. ( I know McCowan is ineligible). I would not start both Reo and Callum against the Swiss.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #31 CELTIC 2 DUNDEE UNITED 0 (MAEDA, HATATE)*
Good evening, friends.
A bitterly cold evening at Celtic Park seemed to encourage our players to run around a little bit quicker than of late, with the match starting at a decent pace and remaining that way for most of the first half. Yet again, though, not too many chances created despite our 400% possession, playing against the most defensive minded team I’d seen at Celtic Park this season.
An early corner from Engels almost resulted in a repeat from last weekend but this time Trusty’s header clipped the bar. But midway through the first half we made the breakthrough when McCowan’s shot was only parried by the goalkeeper back towards the penalty spot, with Daizen Maeda than pouncing on the loose ball to fire Celtic in front.
The second half saw Dundee United be a little more adventurous and with the scoreline remaining 1-0 there were a couple of nervous moments in front of Kasper’s goal, particularly a shot from Middleton which Schmeichel did well to turn around his near post.
The points were finally secured on the 83rd minute. Having no left foot to speak of, substitute Palma curled in a cross from the left with the outside of his right peg which evaded everyone but was collected by Maeda. The ball was returned back in and a Bernardo dummy left it clear for Hatate to fire a well placed shot into the net. Although I’ve since seen some references to a ‘double dummy’ I’m not sure that Bernardo’s decision not to jump for the initial cross counts as one!
As for last night’s songsheets from both ends of the ground it was humourus to a point but hopefully the issue is now put to bed. I’m pretty sure the only song for the 15 players who actually played last night was for Reo after the 2nd goal but happy to be corrected on that.
Another victory, another clean sheet and the gap at the top increased to 16 points with our nearest challengers only having 18 games remaining.
We have now played 31 games this season, winning 23, drawing 6 and losing 2. We have scored 84 and conceded 23 (domestically it’s 74-13 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Worth noting that last season we ended up playing 50 games, scored 115 and conceded 50. We will definitely play another 20 games this season as a minimum. We need to score at least 32 and concede less than 27 to better last seasons ‘for and against’ totals. I’m pretty certain we will.
Thank you so much to the 74 who voted this time around, bang on the average turnout for the season to date. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked. Of the 15 players who contributed, only 2 failed to secure a single vote….
Schmeichel: 1
Johnston: 2
Carter-Vickers: 14
Trusty*: 39
Taylor*: 20
McGregor: 7
Engels*: 71
McCowan: 15
Yang: 2
Idah: 0
Maeda: 37
Hatate: 8
Kyogo: 0
Palma: 1
Bernardo: 5
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Dundee United are –
Engels – 5 points
Trusty – 4 points
Maeda – 3 points
Taylor – 2 points
McCowan – 1 point
And the overall positions after 31 games played are –
52 points – Kuhn
41 points – Bernardo, Scales
36 points – Hatate, Schmeichel
38 points – Maeda
37 points – Engels
33 points – McGregor
29 points – Trusty
22 points – Carter-Vickers
21 points – Johnston A
19 points – McCowan
17 points – Valle
16 points – Taylor
14 points – Kyogo
7 points – O’Riley
5 points – Idah
4 points – Forrest
3 points – Welsh
1 point – Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley
And finally, here’s where this season’s 84 goals have been credited:
*Goalscorers table*
16 – Kuhn
14 – Maeda
10 – Kyogo
8 – Idah
7 – Hatate
6 – McGregor
5 – Engels
4 – Johnston A
3 – Bernardo, McCowan, Scales
1 – Carter-Vickers, Ralston, Taylor, Trusty
1 Own Goal
Total Goals – 84

That’s one interpretation.
Another is that the result, without affecting the outcome of the league title, maintained the viability and credibility of The Old Firm fixture. And, who knows, there may come a time when that could be relevant.

Hi Ernie:
That did cross my mind at the time. However, the problem with conspiracies involving multiple individuals, is the virtual impossibility of keeping them from exposure. I therefore dismissed the theory.

Dundee score. Offside?
Donated to charity.
Squiggly lines deny Dundee a 2nd goal.
Yep,offside. Bugger.

The stamp on Murray surely has to be a penalty?
And we don’t actually have the technology up here to accurately determine if that Dundee goal was offside.
Its farcical.
Don’t worry guys Sevco won’t score again. Fact!
Cos I’ve got them for 2-1 on Superbru. Its 1-1 or 2-1 to Dundee!

Penalty all day long. They had 2 infringements to choose from, the stamp on the foot and the arms round the neck, but didn’t manage to see either.
As for the offside decision, he looked level or maybe marginally off, but the lines made him look well off. Incredible really.
My own personal supposition on the Eboladrome derby is that somehow it was relayed to the players before the game that awe Fenian bastards were gonnie get their fuckin heeds kicked in at the end of the game. Explains to me why they looked so spooked and played so crap.
I’m watching the Dens Park violence right now. The officiating is just plain cheating.

Well, you said you were still Rangers.
Good luck with that!
That Tony Docherty is a really astute manager.
Obviously we bought their best player, they’ve been unlucky all season with injuries also.
Well done.
😀
The story I heard was that McInness turned don the zombie job, in part because he wanted to take his staff with him, and that Docherty refused to go. Don’t know if it is true or not, but if so, Docherty must be enjoying his evening
Roco Vata scores a 30 yard screamer for Watford tonight. Didnae help though as they lost 4-1.

I’ve been told similar EL, however without any substantive evidence it’s mere conjecture.
Mind you I’m still convinced that we allowed them to win those 3 titles,to keep them on life support.
Anyway best leave the conspiracy theories for to zombie,tin-foil hat brigade.

Mags- Donnelly and the boy who scored the goal were outstanding
Every so often I have a moment of reflection. Several people who have posted on this blog can no longer do so. All we see is the content of posts. We cannot see what is going on in bloggers’ lives at the time of posting. Some on the blog are open about issues going on in their lives. Others prefer to keep these things away from the Web.
Real life is bound to have an impact upon what most of us post on here. I know it has impacted my responses.
I do not like New Year resolutions because I usually break them. However, I am resolved to bear in mind that I cannot know personal circumstances when I reply to a posting.
All the best,
