Cool Hand Luke
Morning,all.
My goodness, that was a terrific game of football last night. Yes, it should have been well beyond Dundee long before they equalised late in the first half, and yes, we did retake the lead not long after the break, but they threw the bloody kitchen sink at us for that second period, and I thought we were fortunate to get the late point.
I don’t often say that.
I did point out in yesterday’s article that the home side weren’t to be taken lightly, that they would come at us a lot more than their near neighbours did about three weeks ago. But even I wasn’t prepared for the onslaught they unloaded on us. And this was them with multiple absentees from their squad due to illness and injury!
Tony Docherty can be well proud of his charges. But in truth, so can Brendan Rodgers. Under the cosh for so long, Celtic still managed to keep driving forward even to the last, and it took an added time penalty, a clear handball, for us to get our first equaliser and the final goal of the contest.
I reckon every Dundee player last night will be very pleased indeed with their own performance on the night. I don’t think the same can be said of every Celtic player. I’m not going to name anyone, as that is unfair. But it is worth pointing out that when players are responsible for missing sitters at one end, or causing chaos through dreadful defending at the other, or misplacing nearly every pass they tried, then it makes life bloody difficult for everyone else. But these players have shown their true selves on many other occasions, so a quiet boot up the arse from BR will probably suffice.
As will a changed line-up at the weekend.
To the goals, and there were some damned good ones. Five minutes gone, a deep cross from Taylor works the one-two with McCowan. Rushing in on goal, he has the option of heading square for Kyogo, but wisely decides to put the header into the far corner past Carson. An absolute beaut, and didn’t Luke know it! He must have been knackered after that celebration!!!
We then settled down for half an hour of Celtic doing what Celtic do in these games. Bore the opposition to death. Yes, we created a few chances. One or two should definitely have been taken. An air shot from Idah and a powerful header off the bar from Bernardo were probably the pick of them. But the next goal came when we got a corner with five minutes remaining.
This isn’t the first time I’ve pointed out that the opposition are more dangerous from our corners than we are, but that’s what happened. The usual garbage saw Dundee break like lightning, seventeen seconds it took them to put it in the net. A beautiful finish too, edge of the area to the opposite corner. At that stage, it was against the run of play. But then, fannying about on a 1-0 lead is never too clever.
Second half saw us regain the lead, a bit of a stramash-remember them?-leading to a close-in header from Yang. This time, we didn’t have time to fanny about on our lead. Dundee just whipped up the park and equalised, the basterts! The ball was cleared to our left back area, on the touchline near halfway. All Trusty had to do was put it out for a throw, let the players regroup. Nope, that’s too much for him, he’ll just do nothing and let the home player waltz past him with the ball. And pass it to the corner of the six-yard box for his pal to put it in off CCV. Really really bad defending, no other words for that.
After that, it was Celtic’s turn to be under the cosh. Sure, we were still dominating possession-yeah,like that’s so important these days!-but Dundee were creating more chances and looking more likely. And when they got a corner with about fifteen to go, they just crowded the area, and waited for us to make an arse of it. The impressive Donnelly, only signed last week, rose above Trusty and planted it. I thought he was holding Trusty down, but Robertson wasn’t interested.
Now Celtic were up against it, and we had already used all five subs too. What made it even more difficult was that Dundee were hardly sitting back and defending their lead. We tried shooting from distance-to no effect. We tried the cute pass inside the box-to even less. We tried the through ball to Palma in acres of space-you can guess how that ended. Eventually Kühn tried a shot in added time, his first since he came off the bench. Mo Sylla-no,not that one!-slid in to block it with everything he had. Unfortunately for him, his raised arm was what did the trick, as clear a penalty as you will see Don Robertson give us. Arne Engels is the Cool Hand Luke you want in these circumstances, and he duly obliged. Our second Cool Hand Luke of the night!
This was as hard a game as any of the provincial clubs have given us all season, I reckon. And credit is due to Dundee for a performance that really deserved a bigger audience than turned up on the night. The local public need to give themselves a shake, because they don’t know what they’re missing.

Hi BAD:
After our last few midfield marshmallow performances, I might be checking if any one of Broonie, Keane, Aitken or the Silent Assassin are available and still have their boots!

Iniquitous IV😊
I think others have covered the main points of the Dundee game, so I shall try not to saw sawdust.
I prefer to look on the game as a great piece of entertainment. Both teams deserved something from the match and they got it. A fair result.
I have said this before but most professional footballers can raise their game for one or two special matches. The Dundee players certainly did that last night. What separates most SPL players from those playing for Celtic is consistency. Can Aaron Donnelly play as well in the next six matches? Same for Adewumi.
Let’s also appreciate the entertainment as well as our concerns.Well done to Tony Docherty for getting his players up for this game and for his tactics. If we want Scottish football to improve, we need more games like this.
AH…and all others who are quietly ailing…you are in my thoughts!

Big Packy,
Yip.
Maybe it’s time to take out the common denominator from the equation 😉

This is the current issue within play with ourselves at present.
You hardly need to be Einstein to know how to set up a team in order to stop ourselves at present.
Survive the limited moments of ourselves actually scoring, and grow confidence in matching the movement of our players, and good chances the individual battles will start to go your way, and a counter attacking and set pieces could be very beneficial.
We might have better quality players on show for our next 2 matches, but the basics of the game still applies, and we are dropping into questionable mode far too often within games at present.
Big improvements are still required throughout the whole team.
Rebus
Quite correct, for players to play for big clubs the consistency levels have to be at a high level.
Not going to be individually for every game, as it’s impossible to do so, and even harder within a packed schedule.
However, we are talking about a squad game in operation these days.
Still doesn’t excuse so many below par performances within a team game.
Still not enough standout performers to carry the stinking ones on show either.
These are all current issues that have been ongoing for some time now, and without the solutions on show in any form of a consistent basis either.
Job of Rodgers to start putting right, while the question remains as whether he will actually do so?
here is another one to get the juices flowing ,Kieran tierney is a very good player maybe even a great player, but he is no tam gemmell or danny McGrain, id put him just above Ian young😎😎😎that was a joke BTW 👍you younger ghuys wouldn’t know Ian young??
Big packy
Is Tierney going to be the solution to so many of our lacklustre displays at present?
Don’t think so myself
Johnno neither do I, hope you are ok pal👍👍
Big packs
In general grand, but a big setback occurred last night.
Not impressed with such a lackadaisical approach taken by our team during January so far, to be honest.
Would class the Glasgow Derby as our 4th most important match within January.
Yet it’s set a tone, especially with 3 bigger games coming up, starting this weekend and followed by young boys?
Don’t believe we as a club should be in such a position with confidence dropping throughout
IQ4,
I’m all for a bit of dig and muscle in Scotland! Put it this way, I can’t see anyone pushing that lot around!!
We really have been spoiled for choice.
Lubo, the mad tally, and both kings up front ..wooft!
SSN reporting we are close to agreeing a pre contract with Tierney
Ceasefire deal in Gaza
Looks like KT will be heading North after all.
Let’s hope he can make that position his own.
Johnno yes nail on head, our defense gives me the jitters sometimes, too many goals being conceded,,also yang and Idah dont seem to be cutting it, especially Idah, when you consider what we payed for him and what we payed for henrik larsson ????
Expectation.
Atalanta, away
We knew they were going to attack us therefore the manager prepared accordingly.
Domestically – we don’t expect it,and when it does happen, the team is all over the place.
This going back to the Falkirk LC game.
Fortunately it’s probably too late for the league – our opponents have only in recent weeks realised that the best way to defend against Celtic is to attack.
Majority of the opposition sides have only themselves to blame.
Because see when you think about it – whenever they deploy negative tactics,it actually suits us better.
The system only works when trying to break down teams that sit in and defend – once a team actually goes at us – the system collapses.
BAD- Not seen anything on KT returning this month, pre contract looking good though
Good article bobby, I know you said you weren’t going to pick out any players for criticism, however I feel I have to pick out one, that has been festering in me for a while..
As much as I’ve tried to like Adam Idah, he just isn’t filling me with any confidence whatsoever, it can’t be discounted that he could hardly get a game at Norwich before we shelled out £9.5m for him. I fully understand that at today’s prices it’s not an astronomical amount.
I hope he proves me wrong, but I’m sorry, I don’t see an exceptional striker there. His first touch isn’t good, his hold up play neither.
I’m trying hard not to wonder if Norwich City ground has big windows on it and they seen us coming.
ASWGL hi my fellow st augustines pupil, didnt know it was 9 and a half million for Idah that makes it even worse😎 think of joe wullie harry bobby stevie all celtic strikers who could hit the onion bag👍👍👍another true story,H.H,.OH and henrik

Very astute observation. Watching the backs last night was like watching the Keystone Cops. Several times the best option was to lump it away and regroup. That doesn’t seem to be an option in the possession world. More questions than answers at the moment.
ASWGL
Just saw the highlights.Idah turns his back on a cross in the box. Not a great look. A total waste of money as it stands. Put him out on loan somewhere to see if he can play and get some confidence back.
Bada,
Yeah it looks that way, Bada.
Pity.
Todays blunder from Football Insider :- Keith Wyness has told them that Palma is about to become a Celtic player….
Embarrasing and published also.
I made a statement last night about idah being an empty shirt. The reality is that whoever we plays in the CF position don’t get the service.
Kyogo is lucky to get into double figures for touches any game he plays CF and he all know he is a player
System has to be questioned, and how we can utilise the ability of the players playing in the CF position.
In saying that, I would like to see Kenny given a chance, even if its to mix it up a bit and maybe rattle a few cages.
ASWGL
He certainly isn’t the player we had a year ago, that’s for sure. Back then,we gave him back his confidence and he repaid that in spades. Now,his confidence is shot, and that is particularly bad news for a striker. And why he’s missing chances he’d have snapped up last season.
As for Carrow Road, naw. I used to drive past it about 2am in a previous job. It’s right beside a Holiday Inn,the railway station and a Morrisons. They’ve all got bigger windaes. And probably bigger trophy rooms too.
Lots of chatter over the last 24 hours about the merits of Adam Idah. I thought he had a good game at Dingwall. He linked up play very well on numerous occasions. Not so much last night and his “dummy” when through on goal was a bit baffling.
I’m getting quite annoyed though with the constant referral to his fee. Lets put this in perspective guys. It was under £10m. We got £25m for KT 5 years ago!
We got almost £10m for Petrov in 2006 and McGeady in 2010!!!
Its not Idah’s fault that the biscuit tin has rarely been prized open during the reign of parsimonious Pete!
For a club our size with our income £10m should not be considered a lot of money. Engels is our only £10m+ signing but we’ve sold many players for more that this fee:
Frimpong, Forster, Abada, Van Dyke, Wanyama, Ajer, Edouard, KT, Jota and MOR.
So, this crap about Idah’s fee being held against him needs to stop! The guy is under enough pressure.
BOBBY dont want to disagree with you, but feel I must, Idah has never been any good from day one ,and certainly not worth 9 and a half million👍❤
I’d rather we had spent half the money on the Aberdeen lad (Miovski) than Idah. At least the gamble would have been half as painful to watch had it not turned out.
BLUEGRASS CELT
Girona paid £7m for Miovski. He’s scored four times this season.
Bobby,
Well maybe a quarter disappointed then 😉.
Thought Miovski had a great season before Aberdeen sold him.
So if KT comes in during the summer, Valle goes to Como.
If we get through to the CL playoffs, chances of an immediate loan for KT are high, and I am guessing we would lose Valle by the end of January.
All ifs, ands and buts, but if we gain KT, lose Valle and Taylor, what do we do when KT gets injured?
It’s good to hear of the ceasefire in Gaza. It might start to get some air time on the news now
Billy Bhoy
I agree with you. Its not Idah’s fault that Norwich asked for that fee and we paid it. Continually mentioning it and comparing the said fee to past stars is proving zero. He has lost a bit of confidence I think as any striker does when not getting service nor scoring due to that fact. Our current system has 2 wingers as top scorers. When did you last see that midway through a season. Fans need to look for some positives in his game not just all the negatives.
Sky reporting that Como have made a move to take Valle on loan. I thought we had a deal for a season and if we don’t then that’s poor planning. They are also saying we will try to get KT on loan in January after he’s signed a pre contract with us. Taylor will have to stay unless we are looking at scales to left back or Adam Montgomery but he’s been out injured for a while. I can’t say I’m happy about Taylor being at the club and running down his contract. I’m sure the guy is a solid pro but when your mind is elsewhere and there’s a 50/50 ball that quickly becomes a 70/30. It’s all a bit messy. Not the kind of operation you’d expect a football doctor to be in charge of. Maybe we can give Paul Tisdale a pass on this one but we shouldn’t be in this situation.
Sudden thought.. Is Hatate not able to play left back because he sure as f.. can’t play centre mid these days.
We should find how much Dundee value Donnely.
Would love to see him and KT as our LB options next season.
I’ve liked that kid since the min I saw him.
I didn’t know he had signed with them permanently.
BLUEGRASS CELT
He did, mate. Can’t argue with that. But Idah was excellent for us last season too. He’s having a bloody nightmare just now,so we can only hope that he snaps out of it.
And soon.

It’s good to hear of the ceasefire in Gaza. It might start to get some air time on the news now
———————————————-
Do you think it possible that President Trump can end the carnage in eastern Ukraine and Russia, within 24 hours of his inauguration,as promised?
Billy,
Everything has to be a instant for people these days.
I’m sure there is bundles of talent there, but will he get the time to develop?
20 is really young for a striker.
I actually think he is doing ok and it’ll all click in front of goal soon.
He is contributing.
Reports in France have Celtc in talks with Rennes about the sale of Kyogo, but say that Rennes are balking at the 10 million fee for a 30 year old striker.
Johnno,
Thanks for your response. I’d like to pick up on one of your points.
“Still doesn’t excuse so many below par performances within a team game.
Still not enough standout performers to carry the stinking ones on show either.”
Earlier you coupled the above with your concern about BR’s ability to pick a player…Idah and Trusty being questionable signings.
This is a bigger concern, IMHO, than his formations. What BR says on formations is often different from what he does.
Even I could see the issues that are emerging with both of these players. One of them may be fixable but I am afraid the other is verging on a very bad signing, up there with Bangura. There, I have said enough.
Rebus
16 roads, I don’t know, but sleepy Joe had 18 months to hold Israel to account and only now for some unknown reason things have changed.
2+2 and all that.
It really wouldn’t surprise me what happens next, there might even be a 3rd world war. Who knows? I do believe that the political classes and their advisors think he just might be mad enough to follow through with his threats.
But the slaughter has stopped and that’s got to he good.
If Biden did place more pressure onto Israel, his party might just have gained more votes in the election, and maybe not.
Israel only killed 51 people today and yesterday’s numbers were also high get them in before the ceasefire.
ATOB,
We have not talked for a while.
I agree with your comments on Taylor. I think it was the second Dundee goal, he was outmuscled first before Trusty suffered the same fate.
Secondly, your quote:
Sudden thought.. Is Hatate not able to play left back because he sure as f.. can’t play centre mid these days.
I agree 100%.
Say something I can disagree with 💣

Trust me,there are better hills to die on than having a disagreement with ATHINGOFBEAUTY.
Embdae know the visiting schedule for Estadio Nacional next weekend, 24-27 January? Thanks
Off to watch Arsenal v Spurs.
Hun players look leggy and that’s just walking out the tunnel
Geez, they still have Tina’s “Simply The Best” blaring at Snake Mountain. Coulsn’t touch their necks with a blowtorch.
Hagi falls over every time he feels a feather touching him.
I think The Sheep have 2 new guys playing, and 2 on the bench. I don’t think I can continue watching this. They have been sliced open 3 times in 8 minutes, without once threatening Kelly.
Switched to Inter Milan game 1-1 with Bologna so far.
