Cool Hand Luke

Morning,all.

My goodness, that was a terrific game of football last night. Yes, it should have been well beyond Dundee long before they equalised late in the first half, and yes, we did retake the lead not long after the break, but they threw the bloody kitchen sink at us for that second period, and I thought we were fortunate to get the late point.

I don’t often say that.

I did point out in yesterday’s article that the home side weren’t to be taken lightly, that they would come at us a lot more than their near neighbours did about three weeks ago. But even I wasn’t prepared for the onslaught they unloaded on us. And this was them with multiple absentees from their squad due to illness and injury!

Tony Docherty can be well proud of his charges. But in truth, so can Brendan Rodgers. Under the cosh for so long, Celtic still managed to keep driving forward even to the last, and it took an added time penalty, a clear handball, for us to get our first equaliser and the final goal of the contest.

I reckon every Dundee player last night will be very pleased indeed with their own performance on the night. I don’t think the same can be said of every Celtic player. I’m not going to name anyone, as that is unfair. But it is worth pointing out that when players are responsible for missing sitters at one end, or causing chaos through dreadful defending at the other, or misplacing nearly every pass they tried, then it makes life bloody difficult for everyone else. But these players have shown their true selves on many other occasions, so a quiet boot up the arse from BR will probably suffice.

As will a changed line-up at the weekend.

To the goals, and there were some damned good ones. Five minutes gone, a deep cross from Taylor works the one-two with McCowan. Rushing in on goal, he has the option of heading square for Kyogo, but wisely decides to put the header into the far corner past Carson. An absolute beaut, and didn’t Luke know it! He must have been knackered after that celebration!!!

We then settled down for half an hour of Celtic doing what Celtic do in these games. Bore the opposition to death. Yes, we created a few chances. One or two should definitely have been taken. An air shot from Idah and a powerful header off the bar from Bernardo were probably the pick of them. But the next goal came when we got a corner with five minutes remaining.

This isn’t the first time I’ve pointed out that the opposition are more dangerous from our corners than we are, but that’s what happened. The usual garbage saw Dundee break like lightning, seventeen seconds it took them to put it in the net. A beautiful finish too, edge of the area to the opposite corner. At that stage, it was against the run of play. But then, fannying about on a 1-0 lead is never too clever.

Second half saw us regain the lead, a bit of a stramash-remember them?-leading to a close-in header from Yang. This time, we didn’t have time to fanny about on our lead. Dundee just whipped up the park and equalised, the basterts! The ball was cleared to our left back area, on the touchline near halfway. All Trusty had to do was put it out for a throw, let the players regroup. Nope, that’s too much for him, he’ll just do nothing and let the home player waltz past him with the ball. And pass it to the corner of the six-yard box for his pal to put it in off CCV. Really really bad defending, no other words for that.

After that, it was Celtic’s turn to be under the cosh. Sure, we were still dominating possession-yeah,like that’s so important these days!-but Dundee were creating more chances and looking more likely. And when they got a corner with about fifteen to go, they just crowded the area, and waited for us to make an arse of it. The impressive Donnelly, only signed last week, rose above Trusty and planted it. I thought he was holding Trusty down, but Robertson wasn’t interested.

Now Celtic were up against it, and we had already used all five subs too. What made it even more difficult was that Dundee were hardly sitting back and defending their lead. We tried shooting from distance-to no effect. We tried the cute pass inside the box-to even less. We tried the through ball to Palma in acres of space-you can guess how that ended. Eventually Kühn tried a shot in added time, his first since he came off the bench. Mo Sylla-no,not that one!-slid in to block it with everything he had. Unfortunately for him, his raised arm was what did the trick, as clear a penalty as you will see Don Robertson give us. Arne Engels is the Cool Hand Luke you want in these circumstances, and he duly obliged. Our second Cool Hand Luke of the night!

This was as hard a game as any of the provincial clubs have given us all season, I reckon. And credit is due to Dundee for a performance that really deserved a bigger audience than turned up on the night. The local public need to give themselves a shake, because they don’t know what they’re missing.

Last year, our charity drives raised over £4000 for deserving causes. You are truly a wonderful collective, giving selflessly to others in need.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The bulk of the money was split fairly evenly between our two nominated causes, which were
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and Blood Cancer UK.

New Year, New Cause! From 1st January till 30th June, we will switch our attentions to raising funds for another source of wonderful work on behalf of those who need it most.

MacMillan Cancer Care

Once again, the donations page has been set up for us by CHALMERSBHOY, and my grateful thanks to him for doing this and so much more.

This recently from ATHINGOFBEAUTY deserves a repost.

Happy new year to you all. I just wanted to take the opportunity of the new year to thank and praise Chalmersbhoy for all the charity work he does for the site. Considering we are not the biggest Celtic blog, to raise over 4k for charity is quite a feat. Thanks also to all who contribute but these initiatives need a driving force and we’re very fortunate to have Chalmersbhoy at the wheel. More power to you sir.

****

I’d like to second those sentiments. While MAHE and I had tried several charity initiatives over these few years, they were bloody useless. They lacked the drive and focus that CHALMERSBHOY provided. So thanks, mate. Really well done. And thank you also to you and 16 ROADS for your continued generosity and sponsorship of the competitions, and to TWISTY for his in the recent past.

Well done Bobby trying to sum up such a nonsense of a match, even if it provided great entertainment.

Football is well capable of throwing spanners into the workings of a match, and we don’t manage to be on the receiving end very often, but tonight we were imo?

Total control and dominance for the best part of the first half, and only thing on show, was just how much we were going to win by?
Shock to the system to be going in at half time level.

Normality restored early in the second half, only to receive a bigger shock to the system, in conceding a ridiculous equaliser.

It wasn’t even a shock to the system when we fell behind, as we had become second best in all aspects of the game at the time.
Yet it was a shock to the system to get ourselves a penalty, to get out of Dundee with a point in the end, when questionable as to whether we actually deserved to or not?

As always after such a mixed bag of a match, plenty of questions are going to be thrown up?
Tonight there remains way to many and without simple or easy solutions either?
But the glaring one on show tonight, especially with the transfer window open, is the 15M investment upon Trusty and Idah?
Unfortunately that’s a black mark against Rodgers and his judgement within the transfer market?
Was a concern for a good few upon his return, looking like it could still be place, which is a growing concern at present imo?

Highlights Dundee 3 Celtic 3

Bobby imho Trusty wasn’t being held down for Dundee’s 3rd. He wasn’t even facing the ball when the corner was taken FFS, more interested in impeding the Dundee player than playing the ball, both players guilty of grabbing each other. Brendan 100% correct, too fecking soft. Ref made correct call, again imho.

Leaking 3 goals to a Dundee team missing 10 players, and who have already lost 10 league games, is an absolute disgrace. It seems we spend the first half hour of every game fannying around without any concerted attempts at scoring, the whole purpose of the game.
Start shooting on sight!

‘Celts go 16 clear’

Perfectly summed up by Brendan Rodgers on Celtic TV, he saw the same things as we did. he’s obviously too professional to be as ‘upset’ as the internet.

Mildly surprised but not concerned the starting line up, which can sometimes seem to crossover between rotation and tinkering. Any Celtic side BR puts out should swot Dundee – right? Managers might see this as a vulnerability too, in their team talk and plan, playing your strongest eleven as opposed to resting and protecting due to heavy schedules must remain an option. It’s a team game and you need a best team scenario, three points are three points.

No blaming dreary Dingwall or it’s less than perfect pitch, Dens is bigger and wider, perfect for a passing Celtic side. A settled (at least for two consecutive games) best midfield is now required. Plucking Paulo Bernardo from his Ibrokes hook, didn’t come off, not the best finisher to start with, he’s an easy critique among, loads from last night. Chance taking is one thing, poor decisions are another. Arne Engels who’d previously MOM’d was curiously left on the bench, when every next game should be the most important, Dundee possibly weren’t?

It showed in a first half where Adam Idah managed his fresh air touch technique with only the keeper to beat, the rest of his night passed him quickly by. A breakaway goal made Celtic look shabby, till we took the lead again, only to rinse and repeat twice more. Brendan got a wake up call of why he’d previously omitted Aaron Trusty whose handbags and hissy fits directly cost two avoidable goals.

Calum McGregor rotation immune, had another scampering night to forget, Luke McCowan seemed hooked for hook sake, and when you see formless Luis Palma you already know, we’re down to the bare bones. Greg Taylor now is running out of contract and steam, he gave us another glimpse of the Barca kid who actually looked more heavy legged than wee Greg going off after his remarkable 200th. Reo Hatate also from the bench with Engels couldn’t pick up where others should have left off, Arne at least found a new nickname, EngPen.

The state of Sevco has got an awful lot to answer for, including potential Celtic complacency Brendan’s a busy bhoy, hopefully with ins not just the outs, in this window. Sold and loaned out, a shed load of players by window four has BR, but if Carter Vickers gets injured soon, suddenly Scales & Trusty could be looking more, Mortimer & Whitehouse?

We do have a best keeper, with a few exceptions back to front but it’s too debatable or rotatable depending on how you view it, and nobody has played well, up or down Tannadice Street.

MOM Kasper Schmeichel – somebody has to have it.

Team sheet latest…………………Daizen Maeda

Some great points buddy. They threw everything at us in the second half.

Dundee were fantastic and huge credit to their players, and their management team, for sticking to admirable principles. They played the type of game that asks serious questions of this Celtic team.

It might catch on…

We must learn, and fairly quickly, How to handle teams that refuse to just sit and wait.

Despite the result ..still 16 precious points clear.

It isn’t solely about a missing midfield though, is it?

Weak defensive play, where two out of the four are culpable more often than not, makes us soft touches. Two of the goals lost were down to terrible defensive play.

Ineffective forward play and inability to finish games off, gives the opposition the opportunity to regroup and threaten.

There are weaknesses throughout the spine of the team.
Good enough in Scotland and so far in Europe, but well adrift from a team/ squad that can be counted on to perform at a consistently high level.

To drop points to a hard working opponent isn’t the end of the world but the manner in which we labour in games is.

Good game last night.

A game we had complete control over and just failed in our efforts to get the all important second goal.

Playing football during a Scottish winter is hard enough, but when you take into account the shear number of games we are asked to play, it’s easier to understand why we haven’t won every single game we’ve played.

We seem determined to try and walk the ball over the line at times, so to stop us becoming a little predictable, I would be coaching our forward players to shoot from distance far more.

Our first goal last night was a good example of how we don’t have to walk the ball into the net ..we put in a cross from about 25 yards out, and that cross is met in the box and dispatched into the bottom corner. Football is a fairly simple game, we should keep it that way.

Credit to Dundee, they will never come closer to beating us at their home.

37 years and counting! Our record against them is hard to believe.

Still on course to win this league by 20+ points 👍

We don’t care if we win, lose or draw …WELL ….

I have been saying to my boy how much I like the young left-back that Dundee got from Notts Forest.

After he scored their 3rd last night, the wee guy said he reminds him of the KT that first played for us ..that’s a good comparison.

He may actually be one of us, given how he didn’t even celebrate his goal last night. He’s big ..strong ..technically capable and is fearless ..one to watch.

Just found out that he isn’t on loan anymore, they have signed him permanently.

Thought we were going to blow Dundee away after the first twenty minutes. A good night for a match on an excellent playing surface. A collective malfunction, or perhaps complacency, appeared from nowhere. Strange. Ref had a competent match and VAR stayed in its box.

Trusty is the sort who attracts the mistake-in-him-every-game comment. Last night he took that to a new level. Both Trusty and Scales are 26 years old, their development potential is questionable, to say the least.

With regards to both Trusty and Idah, at least Mark Lawwell can say it wisnae me . His dad will, no doubt, concur.

Well done Bobby. It’s not easy to adequately describe such a rollercoaster performance but you did very well.

I’m getting concerned about the YB game. We are becoming very inconsistent and its a worry which Celtic will turn up next.

All three CHs have had their bombscare moments recently. Calmac has dropped off alarmingly – almost invisible last night and the ever reliable Bernardo was really poor. I’m wondering if BR is tinkering too much. Making 5 changes seemed to weaken our performance last night rather than enhance it.

Top 3 performers. Hmmm another process of elimination required!

Big Audio Dynamite
January 15, 2025 11:50 am

Surely either of the next two windows will see us sort out both the LB situation and find a proper defensive midfielder.

I refuse to believe that a good manager like Brendan doesn’t see how glaring both those things have become.

I’ve now lost count of the number of Windows I have been saying the very same thing!

Over the next 6 months I’d make Kenny a permanent part of the squad (And play him) add at least one winger who can go on the outside, plus bring in Kieran and a big tackling machine for the middle of the park.

I believe that would make us so much stronger while giving us many more options in our backline and midfield.

Enjoyed that game last night, albeit plenty to be frustrated about.

Our central defence is cause for concern, we need a monster in there, a number 6 in midfield and more creativity up front.

I like both Idah and Trusty, but they’re as soft as sh1te and along with Hatate you cannot have them in a battle.

Now about our captain. What a wonderful player and servant….but his legs are gone. He needs to be on the bench more than in the park. His time is nearly over.

Sad but true.

We seem to be going through a phase at present, where we don’t know what we are going to get from our team, on a game by game basis regarding performance levels?

Gone at present is the full 90 minute team, we had earlier on in the season.

There are traits developing into our team, that shouldn’t be on show, within any team, especially ours.

Rodgers can moan all he likes about last night, but doesn’t excuse some of his decision making, where he is paid a fortune to be making, and getting right.

So currently we are looking at bigger issues, that can’t get totally resolved during this window either.

Strongest partnership within a team, has to be that between keeper and CBs. Still over half a season gone, and still don’t know what that actually is for ourselves?

Still persevering with Taylor, even though he’s not committed to our club, and just because he is a Rodgers favourite, he retains the no1 LB position still?

We see how effective kyogo can be, when given the ball and freedom to operate in. Yet the favourable decision is to play him through the centre, without wide options to provide the service he thrives upon. Is it any wonder he could be looking elsewhere to gain that spark back into him, that Rodgers style of play has taken from him?

The role given to calmac is the most pivotal in our teams set up.
Yet it’s not functioning in the manner it once did, and calmac is reduced more often than not, that he looks like he’s spending a good portion of the game directing traffic with all the pointing?

We may be in a decent position at present, with 1 trophy in the cabinet, and the SPFL title as good as won with a 16 point lead.
But we go into our next 2 matches with huge pressure, as all the good beforehand can and will unravel very quickly, if the right results aren’t achieved?

So Rodgers himself has to look at some of his own decision making in order to regain getting the best out of our team, as remains questionable on to regular of a basis at present for my liking.
Especially when teams start putting it up to us, and our response is nowhere near the levels it should be at present imo?

JimDom
January 15, 2025 1:29 pm

To play the devil’s advocate, and see Brendan Rodgers as some of the Celtic PLC perhaps view him.

He is a one trick pony that prefers his teams to play formula football. Possession of the ball is the be all and end all, irrespective of where the ball is on the park, or the skill level of the Celtic player in possession of the ball. He stubbornly sticks to his principles, irrespective of the opponent. His style of football can often be mind-numbingly boring to watch. Our players think so too.

Brendan cannot be trusted with a transfer budget. We will indulge him will his request to purchase Bernardo, Engels, Trusty, and Idah, but only after we have safely banked the Brighton cash for MOR.

The Celtic support cannot now shout abuse in the direction of the directors box when things are going wrong on the park. It’s all on Brendan.

Squad additions during the remainder of the January window will depend on where the club finishes at the end of the current phase of the Champions League.

In Brendan we don’t trust.

Broony looks like he is doing a fair job at Ayr United. At one stage it looked like Falkirk were going to romp away with the title.

I think Ayr are unbeaten in something like their last 5 or 6, and Falkirk have only won 1 of their last 5 or 6.

Falkirk still on top by a couple of points from Broony’s team.

Would like to be able to disagree with your comment and opinion, but unfortunately can’t at present.

The one trick pony remark, is where we find ourselves as a club at present imo.

We have stayed in the same formation for going on 4 seasons now, with only a few tweaks added since Ange introduced this team set up to ourselves?
The tweaks introduced still remains at the better or worse stage still, and this so called better quality players added remains at debatable stage still?

Our club currently is operating upon keeping Scottish dominance intact, but better at CL is also a requirement.

Only still at 50/50 in CL terms at present imo?
Starting to look like a spent force in Scottish terms also on a growing regular basis also.
Our own game depends upon good passing and movement to be successful.
Yet if teams are allowed to set up and draw ourselves into individual battles, we are still a team found wanting, on a growing regularity, with such a rigid team set up in operation for throughout matches in general.

Many valid points have been raised, and yet to much of the same old, same old operation still exists.
Believe that at present the life could be starting to be strangled out of our team at present, and that’s a major concern of mine.

Also think that a lazy approach is currently in place regarding managerial decision making, and moreso upon our current coaching set up also imo?

So as much as we are in a decent enough position within this season, still not as strong as we should be either at present.
January still remains a huge month to be completed still, and at our club only operating at a 50/50 rate is nowhere good enough for ourselves, and possibly never will be either

I think McInnes will have watched last night’s debacle with some interest. If a team waits until our mind numbingly boring passing moves ends up without a goal attempt, then attacks our midfield at speed, we part like an Onion Bears walkout.

We have lost 3 goals to Sevco in 3 of our last 4 games against them. In the last one, they had an incredible 24 shots at our goal. Last night, against Dundee, with 80% possession, we had a pitiful 12. We contrived to lose another 3 goals to a team that had the ball for a quarter of the time we had it, the same team that could only score one against a back 4 of Yilmaz, Nsiali, Propper and Jefte. Ye Gods!! We have now dropped 7 points in our last 4 away games. We were appalling last night, and it is happening far too often. If a team attacks us, our defence is weak as putty, and yields like a sieve. Although McCowan scored early last night, our general pattern over many games is to give opposition keepers nothing to do for the first 30-40 minutes of games, and it just induces yawning ennui.

Our set up at our corner with 5 minutes to half time was just amateurish ( in fact, not even that ). It was positively inviting a counterattack to give the home side a huge boost. There was absolutely no need to send both center backs forward, and our spacing in and around the box was a shambles. This will kill us in Europe.

Contrast this with the way we play after surviving a corner. I think we have only scored on one such counterattack all season, at Tynecastle, with Kuhn on left side interchanging with Maeda on his right, and finishing with a bullet. What we do is tippy tappy at the back waiting for the defence to get set, then pass the ball backwards if they are not quite ready, then start our laborious slow tempo build up with no end product.

I get that we are top of the league, I get that we have scored more goals than any other team, and I get that we can’t be perfect all the time. But Brendan’s stubbornness in ‘controlling the game’ by having more passes than the opposition doesn’t matter a fig if they score the same number of goals as Dundee or Sevco did. If the massive advantage in possession does not yield attempts at goal, we have zero efficiency. Look at the number of shots Dundee had that fizzed past Kaspar’s left post or over the bar. It could have been a lot worse. Young Boys’ Lakomy or Monteiro, and Villa’s Rodgers, Watkins or Duran will simply bury chances like that.

I don’t want to single any player out, because they were all pretty poor, but let’s look at Idah as one example. He wasn’t on the pitch for the fiasco near the end, but I watched him closely before he departed, and he was simply going through the motions, phoning it in, and not putting himself about at all. He has scored important goals for us, at Snake Mountain, Hampden, and Rugby Park, but he didn’t break sweat last night. If you looked at Simon Murray, or the Dundee sub who took their late free kick, they were simply drenched. Murray chased everything, challenged CCV and Trusty for every high ball, and was an energetic nuisance. Idah? Nothing. Adam needs to give himself a shake, or he will have an even shorter career than normal.

So what’s the answer? We absolutely need to translate possession into attempts at goal. That’s the point of the game, right? Shots on goal bring excitement. They bring the crowd into it. Even if not accurate, they can bounce off a defender like Dundee’s second. We need to pass along the 18 yard line for runners to hit the ball first time ( and with power! ) Callum, Reo, Paulo and Arne are all capable of this. The pointless, aimless, fruitless possession is driving many fans up the wall.

And if we need an example of how an early window signing can instantly improve a team, you just need to look at Aaron Donnelly last night. Our team needs major refreshment.

Over to you, Brendan.

“We don’t spend a lot of times during games in the last third with the ball – we did it against Nottingham Forest but we need to improve in that part of the game. I understand in this moment it is ok to play like that against Liverpool and Arsenal – against Arsenal we waited for the opportunity but in the future you cannot always play like that and I know that but we need time to build a different way of playing. In the future we are going to focus a lot on that.”

Leggy tasered him to get his wallet out last time I saw him. We couldn’t believe the size of it. Maybe he’s still recovering? Maybe he’s still in the Canaries? Maybe track him down by sending him an email?

See Villa have paid Dortmund around £20M for forward Donyell Malen. He didn’t even get on the subs bench against us in the 7-1 debacle.

The wee man asked me to do a Celtic team I’d have loved to see in action.

3-5-2

Forster.

Carter-Vickers.

McNeil.

Van-Dijk.

Moravcic.

Keane

McStay.

Murdoch.

Di Canio.

Dalglish.

Larsson.

Subs:

Johnstone
Lennox
McGrain.
Gemmell.
Hay
McCari
McClair.
Aitken.
Elliot.
Mjallby.
Tierney.
Brown.
Rieper.

With a proper midfield anchor in Keane, imagine what that team would do to most.

I can understand the tiredness showing up now that I took a look at our schedule and did some comparison.
From Nov 30th until last night was a total of 45 days in which we had played 13 games in all competitions. The previous 13 games took us all the way back to September 28th a total of 64 days. Thats a difference of 19days. Now I agree we have a bigger squad than many if not all teams in the league but some of them travelled round the world for games at the international times when other teams dont have that issue so a minimum of 19 extra days rest can be a big benefit at this time thus making it more of a drain on our players fitness levels if pressed like last night and Sevco games. Next week as was pointed out earlier YB will be playing their 2nd game after a lay off so a big decision on Saturday for team selection . Do we rest people or play our best eleven against Killies cluggers.

Time to earn it Brendan….

Suggesting Tony Docherty to replace John Kennedy as Brendan’s sidekick? You’ll be getting shouted down for putting that idea forward surely? 😜
