That Janis Joplin Feeling…
Morning,all.
When we entered the transfer window just over two weeks ago, we looked to be in a very strong position for once. We could possibly do with a third striker-but we had Johnny Kenny coming back after his successful loan spells at Shamrock Rovers, and it would surely be unfair to deprive him of a further run in Europe with them just to ignore him. We could probably do with another winger, as Palma was slated for a move and Yang has yet to convince. In addition, even Maeda can’t be in two positions at once, and he is our auxiliary striker as well as our left-sided wide player.
We had five players in midfield, all capable of being a first choice, but I will argue that leaves us one short-and you all know which position I’m talking about!
At the back, we could muddle through with Valle and Taylor fighting it out for left back. The other positions were unlikely to be updated at all.
How times change! It looks like Valle is on his way, and Taylor is no nearer to signing a new deal. It might be a slur on his professionalism to suggest that he isn’t putting himself as much in harm’s way as before, that he is no longer making the tackles he did, but he is only human. Who would want to risk their future by attempting a last-ditch tackle that could cause an injury and jeopardise their next contract?
At centre-back, Trusty looks to have lost whatever he had, while Scales might not command the confidence he once did. Especially given his Ibrox nightmare, the ground where he had made his name-and the position his own-only sixteen months previously. As for CCV, he is always an injury away from missing a month or so, and he looks to be struggling for form too. As an aside, we have also lost Welsh from our CL squad, with Nawrocki touted for a move too.
Meanwhile, Kühn has been out for a bit, Maeda is still absent, and Jamesie is no nearer a return. Add to which, our midfield has forgotten how to provide for the strikers-watch the four of them, if you include Taylor, pass it about in an arc thirty yards from goal if you don’t believe me. Watch them allow the opposition the chance to regroup when we win the ball from a corner. Fuxake, watch them disappear like snaw aff a dyke when we lose possession at a corner!
All this while we are watching a team struggling for form! All this when we have our next two matches in non-league competition, matches which will have a big bearing on the rest of our season.
The third round of The Scottish Cup tends to give us a game against one of the minnows of the competition. Who can forget Buckie Thistle’s big day recently as an example, our visitors even asking to wear their home shirts which are identical to our own. This time, we are drawn against Kilmarnock, a side who might not be having their best season, but one which takes a great delight in giving us a going over. They knocked us out of The League Cup last season, possibly denying us a treble. We have to be careful that we don’t allow this to happen again, for they are well capable of performances which belie their current league position.
Possibly even more important is the Young Boys game in midweek. I’m glad that others have begun to highlight the potential pitfalls of this match, again despite the lowly status of the opposition. It’s true that they have yet to get a point on the board in six matches with a 3-22 goal difference. And that they are much nearer relegation than title contenders domestically. But I started to have misgivings about this game a little earlier than most.
After our outstanding performance and result against Leipzig, we had played three of our four most difficult opponents and racked up seven points. I reckoned from there that another four would see us in the top sixteen easily enough, but the top eight would probably require seventeen points which I thought was beyond us. I watched us draw against Bruges when we should have won-and my optimism faded a little. I saw us draw again against Zagreb when they were there for the taking-and my pessimism really started to rear its ugly head!
I’ve seen us struggle too often in too many games since then, and to be honest I’m becoming less optimistic with every passing transfer rumour. With Welsh gone, Jamesie out, and Valle almost certain to depart, we are already three players down from our 25 man squad. Should we lose Palma, that’s another. Maeda isn’t certain to be back, and I’ve already pointed out some problems with current form.
If we lose one of Taylor, Scales or Trusty to injury, we lose cover for TWO positions. Lose Palma while Maeda is injured, and our entire left side is absent. Lose Idah or Kyogo, we have no cover up front. Lose a midfielder and we have none there either. Is this really the strong squad we always thought we had? Suddenly, is Wednesday night a real concern? Or tomorrow?
Hell knows, I’m usually on the more optimistic side of the fence when it comes to supporting Celtic. Or in life in general. But give me two victories in our next two games and let me breathe a whole lot easier, please. I don’t ask for much, I’m not after a Mercedes Benz or a colour tv. I just want my old optimism back. We can deal with the squad issues afterwards.

Good evening, friends.
Just returned from a wee mini break in sunny Anstruther and only caught fleeting moments of the game through the bottom of several glasses. It’s so long ago I’ve assumed that no-one neds another match report so it’s straight to the results!

I know. We all know. But I’ve surely explained in the most dismal of terms the imperative of immediate strengthening. I was nearly slashing my wrists as I wrote that bloody article!
Bobby
I liked your article very much just like Mahe’s yesterday. Domestically I’m not worried about the Huns or anything that can be classed as organized. Young Boys will let us know if there has been any fundamental progress especially in this new CL format which you must thank UEFA for. It’s a gift to teams like Celtic. However, their motivation is to prevent a super league breakout. So we must “bear” that in mind.
Well since it’s a worthless Scottish cup weekend with the likes of Broxburn playing the robbed Ayr and Celtic playing the rubbered Kilmarnock I thought I’d throw something in here that’s not political god forbid. Just watched a fascinating documentary on the Shroud of Turin. Latest theory is that it’s non other than Leonardo Da Vinci himself all gored up in a dark chamber taking the worlds first el magnifico photograph on a substrate cloth provided by the Knights Templar. Fuck me conspiracy trumpets eat your hearts out
12 minute highlights of Stuttgart vs Young Boys on Spanish language TV. Let’s hope our result is the same. YB did much better in first half than second. Their Polish midfielder can shoot, and their left sided midfielder is a good player. Their left back on the night had a poor game, and the team’s morale collapsed after the second goal went in.

Good morning friends and a Big Happy Friday to all who post or lurk on this fine site.
Absolutely no evidence that Taylor is not putting it in.
A ‘ fan’ who doesn’t like him sees ‘ something’ and types it.
Must be true then.
Replaced by KT to loud cheers.
Back to conventional full backs is it then !
9 year contract for Haaland at City…..world’s gone mad!!!

Lovely story
Interesting few weeks ahead.
Domestically, we’re coasting in neutral gear, the 18 point cushion has been a total hinderence to our collective enthusiasm. Nonetheless, it’s inevitable really and I’m certain tomorrow under the floodlights, against an aggressive opponent will see the Celts turn on the burners.
Midweek will take care of itself, I’m positive we’ll achieve BRs set target.
Now for the window. I’m not certain much will happen. In many games, we’ve played with near £30m of summer signings on the bench. These guys need to start performing and that’s on BR and his coaches. However, we defo need a LB, so either a loan or a Scottish signing till KT arrives. Similarly, if we lose a forward then we need to look at options….but January is difficult for those…see last year for proof.
I’m hoping that the signing of KT is a big help to Trusty and Scales.
Too many times they are left exposed by our LB being caught high up the pitch.
What’s that old mantra about being stronger at the end of each window? KT would be a good start to achieving that in this window?
I kept expecting to read about how Taylor had signed his new contract with us ..the fact he hasn’t, probably means he will be away in May. That being the case, don’t we need 2 new LBs?
We will definitely have 2 absolute units for FBs now, something I’m particularly pleased about. AJ and KT are as good a FB pairing as we have had since …(?) well, it’s been a while since we had anything comparable!
If we were to add a first choice winger and a proper defensive midfielder, I would consider this a great window, and would have to admit that we are going to be stronger at the end of this window!

Morning all!
BAD…GT getting the blame again for the centre backs’ errors! My take on it would be irrespective of who played fullback, whether in a traditional role or the new inverted role, could do nothing to stop the unforced errors that Scales and Trusty continually make. We’ve seen it too often, a pass is on, they hold the ball too long and are then forced into an avoidable misplaced pass.
I know that you know that I’ve defended GT on here and I’m happy to replace him with better but I would actually put Scales and Trusty in that category, too. Especially Trusty, he seems to have a catastrophic error in him every game. It’s surprising how few goals we’ve actually conceded domestically (although, I think we’ve doubled our numbers since the Ibrox game!)
Haaland’s new contract is something i haven’t seen since Jim McClean chucked it as Dundee United boss! I think you had to sign a 10 year deal just to get in that United team!
Haaland’s deal must be one of the most expensive contracts ever put in front of a player, eh? The money these players are earning is unreal ..
I can see why Greg is being advised to keep his options open. I’d love to know how much we are actually offering Taylor to stay – 10-15k pw? Wonder what he was on @Killie.
McCaff,
I’m sure you know that I very rarely even have a go at any of our players ..I’m fact, the exact opposite actually.
For Greg I can make an exception! IMO the boy just isn’t good enough to play for us, but I have no problem with others who may see something different in any of our players ..all about opinions, eh?
I’m really hoping that KT can come in just now and instantly make the position his own. I’m sure we will both be happy if AJ and KT are our first picks going forward
@AnthonyRJoseph
UPDATE: Barcelona will allow Alex Valle to join Como, if Celtic agree to terminate his loan deal with them.
The left-back is likely to be needed for Celtic’s upcoming #UCL games, as the Hoops cannot register new signings till the next round.

BAD…just reading about the Huns scrapping their B-Team (the wee yin no the big yin! 🤣)
This is a bad move for Scottish fitba, really bad. Things were pretty desperate before this announcement with regards to real progression and development of youth players in Scotland. The second biggest team dismantling the only feasible, albeit flawed, route into Senior fitba is a disaster for any young player looking to see how the Pathway works. R2ngers have made the decision on a purely financial basis, and it is understandable, but it surely is now time for the SFA/SYFA/SPFL to step up and introduce a proper means of developing youngsters.
I’m seriously gutted by this decision!
BAD..I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Taylor has faults but he’s not as bad as is made out! I respect your right to be wrong! 😉😁
I think like most on here you just don’t like the fact he was a wee Hun but as the old song goes…
🎵🎵🎵He used to be a Hun but he’s alright now!! 🎵🎵🎵
https://celticunderground.net/the-bhoy-in-the-picture-alfie-conn/
…and on the back of R2ngers scrapping their B-Team we sign David Pleat as a scout on a 12 month contract! Does Pleat have pictures of Paul Tisdale, up a close, wi some burd that isnae his wife!!! 🤣
McCaff,
Funny you should mention that! 😊
Financially things must be really grim over yonder. I was actually thinking about how legal this is – Can you just say in the middle of the season that you don’t want to take part anymore?? From the outside it looks like they can do whatever tf they like and to hell with the rules, eh?
I bet it would be getting reported very differently if it had been us doing this! Btw, I didn’t know they had actually admitted it was being done for financial reasons, is that a fact??
Just wait till they introduce Rang3rs and are allowed to just start again in the top league!
Scottish football, a laugh a minute!!
BAD…if it was for development reasons I’m sure it would have been reported that a new idea was being touted for youngsters. The fact they’ve scrapped it with immediate effect means, to my mind, there’s not been any sufficient success either with Youth players coming into the 1st team or meaningful dollar coming in from sales!
So, no it wasn’t reported as financial but it’s not hard to make sense of it!
McCaff,
I was literally gobsmacked this morning when I found out we are hiring 80yo David Pleat as one of our football scouts!
Rather than be accused of being ageist, I’ll leave it there!!
Aye, there’s a few young uns on here that might be offended!!
McCaff,
As ever, I’m sure things are much worse than we are being led to believe.
I think we are both well aware we won’t be getting the truth about their finances in the back page of the daily Ranger.
Been brilliant reading the delusional fruit loops debate who they should be buying with all that money they don’t have.
You think the penny (Arcade) will ever drop with them?Y
BagatelleRSC
Haaland’s contract at 500,000 per week is strange. At present, it is probably already below market, given Britain’s tax regime. Certainly will be in 10 years. Plus a strange time to commit, given City’s possible penalties for the FFP case. Must be terms such as release clauses that I havent yet seen reported
So almost five years ago we sold Kieran Tierney and knew we had to replace him, with a similar player.
Now almost five years later, we are (reportedly) finally replacing him with (who else but) Kieran Tierney 😀
This tells us our recruitment team for the last five years have been pish. !!

I can totally understand the drop in confidence levels, that were so high earlier in the season, especially as I feel much the same way at present.
I do believe that our next 2 matches could be classed as season defining as to what direction are club are heading towards, for the remainder of this season and beyond imo.
The results of these 2 matches will also have a huge knock on effect with how this window will play out for ourselves, in the quality of player we are hoping to attract into our club.
At present we are seeing that the overall squad isn’t as strong as we once thought.
The entertaining football has been replaced moreso with a far more tedious and rigid approach.
Luckily the results haven’t been to damaging yet, but we have growing concerns on show at present and very valid opinions also.
The blame factor for the likes is growing, and isn’t a mix that I particularly feel comfortable with in our club at present imo?
Of course everything changes with 2 victory’s in the next 2 games.
On paper these next 2 matches should be a formality, especially at home?
But personally not feeling that at present, and hate to think of the consequences of anything but 2 wins for ourselves.
Hoping our players aren’t feeling the same lack of confidence as myself, as the pressure is huge with what’s at stake for ourselves.
Far easier to gain confidence levels, if you can transfer that into trust within our players and manager to deliver, to match our requirements.
At present there has been far too many questions raised, without seeing any real solutions to problems on show, again not a great mix.
So at present nervous about the task ahead.
Struggling to put the required trust into so many expected to deliver.
Will not reduce giving me full support towards those responsible for delivering, no matter how I might currently feel about some individually at present.
And this life as a Celtic supporter isn’t as easy as many would like to make out it is either.
But 2 victory’s will keep it as very rewarding as it has always been.
Believe it will be achieved, not bothered about how, but certainly far more nervous than what I would have been a few months ago for sure.
Belgium fires it manger. The Scottish papers are trying hard to get Clement appointed as his replacement, so the zombies can get him off the wages at least
MIKEINTORONTO
Widespread reports over here that Harland’s original deal included guarantees that took him to £850k per week. Presumably the new one is an improvement-especially since it has no release clause. Shitload of money, approaching half a billion before it ends.

One game at a time and all that.
I’ve absolutely no doubt that an 11, then, 14, then 15, then 18 point gap over the past month has created an air of complacency at Celtic and Lennox town.
All eyes are on the cup and the CL. Players want to play in big matches and that in turn makes them less than committed to a 50/50 tackle , a rapid sprint back or putting the head in where it hurts.
However, I’m certain they’ll all want to impress immediately before midweek and tomorrow’s cup tie comes at the perfect time.
I’m willing to predict Celtic 5 Killie 0.

IQ4,
Considering the number of great Celtic players and teams CCB has seen in his time following the hoops, I think I would rather have hired him before David Pleat.
Talk about things coming right out the blue!
From the Celtic Star website
David Pleat – A good addition to Celtic’s scouting staff
Highly experienced David Pleat is a good addition to the Celtic scouting staff…
New head of football operations Paul Tisdale has added a well respected and experienced member to his scouting team in the shape of David Pleat who will focus on our recruitment down south for Celtic.
A wealth of experienceThe 80 year old has a wealth of experience in the game in a career that’s spanned over 60 years. Having managed clubs such as Spurs, Luton Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday he will have a wealth of knowledge of the English game, not to mention numerous contacts that can be only be used to our advantage.
David has also had advisory roles with Nottingham Forest, West Brom and Portsmouth, as well as working for the premier league as an analyst for youth games and advising on academies.
A consultant scout at TottenhamFor the past 14 years he’s been employed by Spurs as a consultant scout, and he’s said to have been influential in the signings of players such as Jan Vertonghen, Dele Alli, and Ben Davies.
David may be well in his advancing years, but a man who is the longest serving manager on the league managers association board and management committee, as well as an inductee in the LMA hall of fame alongside the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Fabio Capello, Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, and Jurgen Klopp can only be beneficial to our much criticised scouting department.

Wish I had your confidence, really do.
Team selection is always interesting these days usually.
Yet struggling to get past the risk factors involved against the kille kickers.
Don’t think we can afford not to start with kuhn and kyogo, but will be high upon the thug approach expected.
Add in Maeda and should he be risked, even if available in the first place?
Again calmac looking like a rest is due for him, but highly unlikely.
Who actually is our best midfield to put into operation nowadays?
Surely scales will replace Trusty even if it isn’t the perfect solution with the Taylor factor in the left side of our defence.
Our pass and movement game will hopefully be on show, but rest assured we will have to overcome the anti thug football expected from the kille kickers and a hun scum manager to happy to apply them also.
David Pleat, Jeezo….
Can remember him doing a co-commentary slot on a Huns game at Celtic Park years ago.
Tommy Coyne was breaking through and was brought down about 20 yeards out.
The new rule about a red card for last man had not long started.
Well, the bold Pleat pipes up ‘it’s never a sending off as I’ve seen him play (Coyne) and he would never have scored’.
