That Janis Joplin Feeling…
Morning,all.
When we entered the transfer window just over two weeks ago, we looked to be in a very strong position for once. We could possibly do with a third striker-but we had Johnny Kenny coming back after his successful loan spells at Shamrock Rovers, and it would surely be unfair to deprive him of a further run in Europe with them just to ignore him. We could probably do with another winger, as Palma was slated for a move and Yang has yet to convince. In addition, even Maeda can’t be in two positions at once, and he is our auxiliary striker as well as our left-sided wide player.
We had five players in midfield, all capable of being a first choice, but I will argue that leaves us one short-and you all know which position I’m talking about!
At the back, we could muddle through with Valle and Taylor fighting it out for left back. The other positions were unlikely to be updated at all.
How times change! It looks like Valle is on his way, and Taylor is no nearer to signing a new deal. It might be a slur on his professionalism to suggest that he isn’t putting himself as much in harm’s way as before, that he is no longer making the tackles he did, but he is only human. Who would want to risk their future by attempting a last-ditch tackle that could cause an injury and jeopardise their next contract?
At centre-back, Trusty looks to have lost whatever he had, while Scales might not command the confidence he once did. Especially given his Ibrox nightmare, the ground where he had made his name-and the position his own-only sixteen months previously. As for CCV, he is always an injury away from missing a month or so, and he looks to be struggling for form too. As an aside, we have also lost Welsh from our CL squad, with Nawrocki touted for a move too.
Meanwhile, Kühn has been out for a bit, Maeda is still absent, and Jamesie is no nearer a return. Add to which, our midfield has forgotten how to provide for the strikers-watch the four of them, if you include Taylor, pass it about in an arc thirty yards from goal if you don’t believe me. Watch them allow the opposition the chance to regroup when we win the ball from a corner. Fuxake, watch them disappear like snaw aff a dyke when we lose possession at a corner!
All this while we are watching a team struggling for form! All this when we have our next two matches in non-league competition, matches which will have a big bearing on the rest of our season.
The third round of The Scottish Cup tends to give us a game against one of the minnows of the competition. Who can forget Buckie Thistle’s big day recently as an example, our visitors even asking to wear their home shirts which are identical to our own. This time, we are drawn against Kilmarnock, a side who might not be having their best season, but one which takes a great delight in giving us a going over. They knocked us out of The League Cup last season, possibly denying us a treble. We have to be careful that we don’t allow this to happen again, for they are well capable of performances which belie their current league position.
Possibly even more important is the Young Boys game in midweek. I’m glad that others have begun to highlight the potential pitfalls of this match, again despite the lowly status of the opposition. It’s true that they have yet to get a point on the board in six matches with a 3-22 goal difference. And that they are much nearer relegation than title contenders domestically. But I started to have misgivings about this game a little earlier than most.
After our outstanding performance and result against Leipzig, we had played three of our four most difficult opponents and racked up seven points. I reckoned from there that another four would see us in the top sixteen easily enough, but the top eight would probably require seventeen points which I thought was beyond us. I watched us draw against Bruges when we should have won-and my optimism faded a little. I saw us draw again against Zagreb when they were there for the taking-and my pessimism really started to rear its ugly head!
I’ve seen us struggle too often in too many games since then, and to be honest I’m becoming less optimistic with every passing transfer rumour. With Welsh gone, Jamesie out, and Valle almost certain to depart, we are already three players down from our 25 man squad. Should we lose Palma, that’s another. Maeda isn’t certain to be back, and I’ve already pointed out some problems with current form.
If we lose one of Taylor, Scales or Trusty to injury, we lose cover for TWO positions. Lose Palma while Maeda is injured, and our entire left side is absent. Lose Idah or Kyogo, we have no cover up front. Lose a midfielder and we have none there either. Is this really the strong squad we always thought we had? Suddenly, is Wednesday night a real concern? Or tomorrow?
Hell knows, I’m usually on the more optimistic side of the fence when it comes to supporting Celtic. Or in life in general. But give me two victories in our next two games and let me breathe a whole lot easier, please. I don’t ask for much, I’m not after a Mercedes Benz or a colour tv. I just want my old optimism back. We can deal with the squad issues afterwards.

If you’re doing your gogglebox stint tonight. Celtic are supposedly front runners to get Real Valladolid winger Raul Moro, (now that Ajax have dropped out of the running) their game is on La Liga Tv and Premier Player among other channels.
———————————-
Hi ASWGL
Thanks for the heads up. Yes, it’s on ESPN+ over here, but unfortunately I won’t be watching it. I’m dealing with the ‘HoneyDo’ list this afternoon, before taking her and her sister out to dinner in Ellicott City for the latter’s birthday.
Under normal circumstance, I would probably have watched either the Eintracht- Dortmund or Roma-Genoa games, but for the rumoured Celtic interest in Moro. I remember Valladolid playing Real Madrid a few months ago, and honestly can’t remember Moro. I just went back to check and he played the last half hour. Nope, still nothing.
I’ll take a peek at some of his past performances over the weekend, and see whether there’s a hidden diamond there.

Iniquitous IV😊
ASWGL would have loved to have played for half the salary the shysters they have on theirnow
Mike,
The money at top end of the game is utterly sickening.
I keep wondering where we are going with this.
Crap players want tens of thousands a week now.
We’ve fecked it
dont worry, mick has told me to get tae fuck, shame really, loved mick and solkitts posts GNAGB ALL🙏🙏
Rio Ferdinand made a common sense observation recently regarding Man U’s recent difficulties in playing through a high press: “If you can’t play through them, play over them.”
This is something Brendan and our defence would do well to consider. We have gone into panic mode too often recently while being pressed, particularly in the corners. Good teams realize when they are playing a losing hand, clear their lines, and reset.
It helps a lot if you have forwards who are fleet of foot. Hey! Hang oan! We have three of them. Time to vary it up, Celtic.
Denis Law RIP
Denis Law RIP. A true legend.
Denis Law RIP
For Iniquitous IV,
Brechin just scored a belter from 30 yards against the Mini’s 😁

I see Shankland isn’t in the squad. Is he injured or being wrapped in cotton wool before the train – or perhaps bus fare – to Ibrox? 🤔
THIS POST might not get thru, think im banned along with mad mitch😎😎had to post this, seen dennis law a few times playing for united in the late sixties,,head and shoulders above everyone else👍👍

David Pleat, Jeezo….
Can remember him doing a co-commentary slot on a Huns game at Celtic Park years ago.
Tommy Coyne was breaking through and was brought down about 20 yeards out.
The new rule about a red card for last man had not long started.
Well, the bold Pleat pipes up ‘it’s never a sending off as I’ve seen him play (Coyne) and he would never have scored’.
WTAF
Man’s an idiot.

Wow. That’s some grudge.
Just hope I never crossed you in SDF day

I said in the preview for the Huns match that we should play it over their midfield to our wingers instead of trying to play through them. Makes perfect bloody sense.
JUST BAN ME NOW you like banning true Tim’s 👍👍👍👍
San Luis
13 points clear gives some semblance of competition compared to 20 or more.
Next 2 game should be competitive so less chance of complanceny.
Well see.
I wouldnt bet on any welcome signings.
Not good for domestic competition.
A lot will hang on YB result in terms of future planning for Europe.
It’s not PL. It’s been Celtic’s policy in the past. It should no longer be but if you know the history.

Just one of my more alert moments.
Couldnt lift a ragman’s trumpet after a week of chemo.
It’s been an experience so far.
Should improve in 5 days when I stop taking the ugly pills for a week.
Thanks for asking.
I’ll pop in now and again if I can.

Take care and keep battling through.
Auldheid @ 8:43 pm,
Take care and fight it with that indefatigable spirit….
Hail Hail
Just saw the Denis Law headline. I’ll never forget watching him in 1961 in a World Cup Qualifying tie against Czechoslovakia with well over 100,000 at Hampden. The Czechs were one of the best European teams in history, and reached the World Cup Final the following year, only to lose to Brazil.
Law was simply magnificent, scoring the last 2 goals like a striking cobra in a 3-2 win for Scotland. If you blinked, you missed them. Other luminaries that day were White and Baxter. Sigh ( when Scotland had actual football players ).
AULDHEID
Fortunately you’ve got that fighting Calton spirit, mate. Good luck.
Raul Moro subbed in 57th minute. Current score Espanyol 1 Valladolid 1.
Auldheid
Take care and keep battling.
Auldheid,
Keep on fighting the good fight on all fronts.
So are we saying that the £5/6 million difference will allow us to buy a better player than what we will be looking at now.
If this is the case, would/should we jeopardise CL qualification next season and a potential £40/50 million because a lack of risk/ ambition.
Hi MIT Tony got in touch with me so thanks for that, I read you come from Paisley and a Lawyer is that an oxymoron 😄😄, any wotd on Jota coming back
So sad to hear Dennis Law has gone but perhaps it was a relief. Some time ago he announced his retirement from public life due to illness.
I took my then girlfriend, now my wife, to see Scotland vs Spain, but really to see Dennis. I thought even if she hated the sport, she would like the antics of our blonde bombshell! The Spanish LB was kicking everything Scottish including Dennis. As we know was very good in the air. Scotland had a corner and I turned to my lass and daid Law soar above everyone and score. Over came the corner and a leaping Law was nowhere to be seen. The ball was cleared and players started clearing the penalty area. There was the Spanish LB lying flat out on the grass. Dennis had been busy during the melee!
RIP I and thousands will never forget you, Dennis. Flags will be at half mast in Manchester.

Apologies. Your 1546 comment was stuck in our filters.
I’ve reinstated it. Sorry about that.
The winger from Rayo Vallecano, carried off…

That is excellent news, mate. Always delighted when old friends get back in touch.
BADABING
That’ll be him off the list then.
Auldheid keep your chin up pal your contribution to this site has been eye catching at times
Thanks Bobby played golf with Tony his brother and wee mate in Lisbon 50 years after I was at the final as a 15 year old
Moro suspected broken collar bone……….. Next !! 😀
Sad to hear Denis Law has passed. I never knew that Bergkamps father named his son after Denis, but apparently had to add an extra ‘n’ to Dennis Bergkamps name due to some Dutch law.
Auldheid get well soon, and haste ye back Rebus has no one to scroll by lately 😀
Auldheid
hope you are doing okay.
POZ
Tony said he was going to reach out. If he owes you money, I charge a 10% commission!
But I should be the one thanking you. Your post got me reconnecting with my pal as well.
Auldheid
All the best mate.
So Haaland has signed a new contract to play with Citeh for another 100 years or until next season. Whatever comes first. Who does he think he is? The Old Firm?
Mags,
The Haaland deal is linked to the City court case,,,if they get found guilty whatever, their biggest asset cannot be bought on the cheap but rather for a new world record fee.
The real angle,,what about Rodri who is the beating heart of that team usually. He should be on the new top salary. Once one gets the big bucks,,,,
Hail Hail
