The Kyogo Conundrum
Morning,all.
Yesterday was the 30th birthday of Kyogo Furuhashi, our current leading striker. I posted a wee montage of some of his highlights during his time with us and elsewhere, but my congratulations to the wee man on this milestone birthday were echoed by few of our fellow contributors.
Perhaps this was because we were in the middle of another songs/GB debate. Maybe it was down to a deep depression over a certain event in the US-or alternatively, many of us were busy watching it. More likely it was due to being a Monday, notoriously one of the slower days on the site.
Quite possibly of course, it was entirely due to his current and ongoing form. Let’s face it, although McInnes as predicted was a torn-faced greeting’ bastert after the game, insisting that our second goal should not have come about, the truth is that the goal in question shouldn’t have been a deciding factor in the match. The reason for that is simple-our continuing profligacy in front of goal.
On the plus side, it should be pointed out that the midfield finally remembered how to create chances for our forwards. Our creativity at times was outstanding, something we haven’t seen for far too long. The finishing though was woeful-and the wee fella was the worst culprit. Which provides the title for today’s article. For at the moment, there is little doubt that Kyogo is a conundrum, and one that the manager is no nearer to solving.
Kyogo arrived at the club in summer 2021 as an early signing under AP. Quite honestly, his headline stats were little to get excited about, 50 goals in 112 matches for Vissel Kobe. He had recently been playing alongside the peerless Iniesta, over in Japan to dazzle them in a way that only Iniesta can, and we heard that Kyogo had learned from him how to use space to lose his marker, to time his runs. Personally, I was in the wait and see camp-but it didn’t take long for him to show us what he had.
In an injury-stricken first season he was a star man, particularly when teamed up with Jota on the wing. Twenty goals in only 33 matches is proof enough of that. The same duo were relentless in the second season, with Kyogo returning figures of 34/50. In those two seasons, Kyogo wasn’t just our leading striker, he was our talisman. An icon. He could do no wrong, and even though he didn’t take every chance that came his way, it sure as hell looked like he did!
Of course, AP had set the team up in his own fashion, a strategy which played directly to the strengths of Kyogo. Get the ball to him as quickly as possible. Playing on the shoulders of the defence, his speed and timing were a joy to behold. And a particularly successful ploy was to cut the ball into the six yard box for him to slot home. Did this work? Indeed it did, and five trophies from six tells you all you need to know.
Then suddenly we find ourselves without AP and without Jota. BR walks through the door with his own tactical plans. Tellingly, there is less emphasis on cutting the ball across the six yard box. Even worse for Kyogo is that the plan is no longer to get the ball to him as quickly as possible; he is to be used in a more withdrawn role, to be more involved in the build-up. Even with pace to burn, it is rarely easy to be in at the start of a move and there to finish it off-unless of course the move itself takes so long to build that the chance never materialises in the first place. And this is a huge part of why his return has dropped off in the last 18 months. From a return of 54/83 in his first two seasons, it has dropped to 31/81. And when a striker isn’t banging them in as regularly as before, when he isn’t being played in his optimum role, his confidence will drop, that vital fraction of pace and speed of thought disappearing along with it.
Which leads to the ever decreasing circle of a poorer return rate, and a higher percentage of missed opportunities when they do finally arrive. It’s like he’s so surprised to find the ball at his feet with the goal at his mercy that he’s forgotten what to do with it! Like on Saturday, and like too often already this season in particular.
So whose fault is that? Is it his, for failing to adapt to the new system? Or is it the fault of the manager for trying to impose a system on players for whom it is unworkable? Well, Jock Stein always said that you should never ask players to do what they simply cannot do, but that didn’t stop BR from trying CalMac as a left back as an example. And I don’t think the current system is working for Kyogo. What’s worse, given that the manager is not known for changing his preferred system, is that Kyogo is not working for the current system. So something has to give.
I’ve been looking at the return rates of our top strikers over the last decade or so, and Kyogo bears favourable comparison with the likes of Hooper (83 in his three seasons) Griffiths (78 in his first three seasons) Dembele (48 in two seasons) and Edouard (85 in four seasons). All of these players left us for one reason or another, and each time we carried on regardless. Is it time then for Kyogo to do the same? Is that a question any of us would ever have considered only eighteen months ago?
More to the point, would we have even considered a derisory £10m for his services eighteen months ago? Has his value dropped by 2/3 in that time, for I doubt we would have entertained less than £30m at that time. And the fans would still have been bloody fuming anaw!
For the avoidance of doubt, I absolutely adore the wee man. I think he is probably the best striker we have had since The Magnificent Henrik. I can hardly give higher praise. But I hate what has happened to him in the last eighteen months, what is happening before our very eyes. I hate seeing him miss chances that he would have put away in his sleep. It hurts to watch him making runs that go unnoticed, it hurts to see him dropping back to unfamiliar territory to do what he is told-instead of doing what he and we love best, which is scoring goals. And there is absolutely no chance that we would be stupid enough or contrary enough to sell him right now, not with so much to play for and with so little there in reserve for his absence. Heaven forbid that he should even pick up an injury, ffs.
But for his own sake,I think he should tell that new agent of his to earn his corn. Go get him another club. Go and get the sun on your back, like another of our great heroes did. Most importantly, go to a place where the manager wants him and has a system designed to cater to his strengths. He might never be loved by fans elsewhere as he is here, but at the moment I think it is more important for him to be loved and appreciated by his manager.
But only in the summer. Not now, no way.

Seems so. (Hangs head in shame…)
Bobby,
That was an enjoyable read!
It has been painful to watch Kyogo struggle in BR’s system. The loss of MOR has not helped but , like all great players, he can adapt. He is much better on the wing. Jota was more of a byeline player than any of our other wide players. Perhaps we shall add somebody who has that skill AND is allowed to use it.
Kyogo is a gentleman, something that is in short supply in the game.
It makes sense to sell him in the summer but I shall hate it if it happens.
Rebus
Good read.
Losing Jota ,Abada and MOR has impacted Kyogo greatly, no team can lose that kind of forward quality and expect everything to be the same. BR has likely realised this before any of us and as a result has had others take their share of the goals to lessen the burden on the forwards.
If Kyogo goes, and it’s inevitable he will at some point, he will be fondly remembered by all.
Indeed, in decades to come we will look back at our main Japanese trio with much the same fondness as we do now to big Pierre, Jorge Cadete and Andy Thom.
We were lucky to have them and enjoy them , in what are short careers with Celtic.
Good morning, friends.
I assume that it was my ‘copy and paste’ list of songs yesterday that messed up the formatting on these pages. Apologies for that and no problem that my post was eventually deleted.
I’ll stick to POTY and Champions League tables from now on.
As for The Kyogo Conundrum there is no question that he is a naturally talented forward player. But he needs service and is a little bit wasted in the current set up. I’d still start him in every game mind you. A conundrum indeed.
Couldn’t agree more with that assessment, and I wonder if Kyogo, more than anyone else, has been a victim of BR’s rigid system. Whilst it may not happen as much as under Ange, how many times recently have we seen passes across the front of goal and nobody there to convert them? As for the possibility of him leaving before season’s end, it may depend on the CL outcome. In fact a LOT may be dependant on those next two games!!
A very timely article Bobby.
Kyogo has looked a bit down recently. He’s not celebrating his goals with the delight of previous seasons. His demeanor is of a player in his last season at the club.
Something that’s caught my eye this season that I’ve not seen anyone comment on…whenever any of our Japanese players score there comrades rarely get involved in the congratulations – particularly between Kyogo and Maeda. If one scores the other appears to be absent from the group hugs.
Anyone else notice this? 🤔
JOBO
No,mate. You were and are blameless. It was yours truly! Thoroughly chastened,I am. Fortunately,ASWGL was on hand with the remedy.
Aye, Bobby, but the remedy seemed to involve deleting my post. But absolutely no worries….
Billy bhoy,
I can’t say I’ve noticed the Maeda/Kyogo element but I’ve definitely noticed he’s not been as exuberant in his celebrations in the last year. I think he’s suffering a bit from not being the main man. Not in an egotistical way just that previously he felt he was really contributing to the success of the team and now he’s more and more on the periphery. We can argue that it’s the system that’s killing his game but it won’t change. BR will not change his plan to accommodate any player so the wee man will be on his way either this window or next. He’s not been able to adapt. It’s unfortunate but he will definitely be remembered with great affection by the support. I might even sing a wee song for him. 😂😂
Good read BMCUWPS,
A striking feature about our Asian signings in general has been the lack of any unwanted drama surrounding the players.
Whether they succeeded or not, they got on with it without any nonsense off the pitch, that I am aware of.
New contracts were agreed and signed. That has also been a feature of our squad in recent years. O’Reilly, CCV, Johnson, Maeda, Kyogo and Hatate etc.
Our relative financial strength, the individual players and the general atmosphere at the club combined to build a stability. Celtic have been a good place to be in recent years.
Avoiding the waste and negativity of players running down contracts is a necessary part of the management of the squad.
Financial basket cases like Leicester and Sevco, are clubs who failed to manage their squads and ultimately lost too much money by failing to sell at the right time.
On paper Gregg Taylor is one of the most valuable members of the squad. It will be a pity if he walks. I guess reasonable left backs are like hen’s teeth. The player holds the cards and probably expects a higher salary, given the position he plays.
The fact that we’ve managed to get so many players to renew contracts in recent years has been a cornerstone of our success on the pitch and the prospective sale price: Matt O’Reilly.
Norwich were in such a strong position over the summer during our repeated attempts to sign Adam Idah because he had recently signed a new deal there.
Part of the targeting process is to identify players coming towards the end of a deal. If a club holds a registration for a further 3 or 4 years, you’ll pay a premium for that registration. Especially if they are playing in England.
Having paid a premium, if the player doesn’t hit the ground running, very quickly you have a problem.
Anyway,
Jota is an interesting story. Apparently we had been aware of him about 5 years before he came.
– If we had signed him at 16, he’d of probably followed the growing exodus of decent youngsters out of the Club before establishing himself as a first team regular.
(Football Agents are sales guys. They rarely seem to talk about their recommendations that didn’t work out…)
‘Helena Costa was a scout at Celtic for a long time and very good at her job,’ said former Falkirk and Dunfermline midfielder Moss.
‘She coached Jota at the Benfica academy from when he was eight or nine years old and she recommended him to Celtic when he was around 16.
‘I was scouting for the Celtic academy when she said to me: “David, you need to try and sign this winger before he signs a contract with Benfica”.

Kyogo changed his agent in the summer.
He did that for one of 2 reasons , to get a new contract or a move.
He never got either.
At 30 if we got £10m at the end of the window or in the summer, that would be a great bit of business.
He has had one really good season when he scored 27 league goals, other than that his goal return per games has been poor.
I’m not agreeing with this,
that he doesn’t receive the service, he misses chances every game.
Bobby
Great article and all very valid points.
Rodgers style of play v kyogo quality’s as a player = A key player with limitations?
Personally don’t believe it’s a good mix, and something had to give eventually.
Hardly helps matters that Idah isn’t fairing any better, with only moments of goal scoring opportunities available on a limited basis available to a striker at present for ourselves?
And them moments are reduced even further against the low block.
So when there is a problem on show, within our team, you would expect the manager to find the solutions, but what are the solutions?
I fail to see how we can expect to see a striker such as kyogo, prepared to make so many unselfish runs, without rewards, for ourselves, within the current set up?
Also agree that kyogo sees his potential future elsewhere, especially with a team that will get a better return from him, and kyogo back to enjoying his own game again.
The question is possibly a case of when, moreso than where at present?
I do still think that there are possibly better opportunities available for kyogo as a 30 year old striker, within the MLS, moreso than European football, especially as wages aren’t as readily available within Japanese football imo?
The biggest concern, remains that the MLS season starts at the end of February, with a transfer window running until April.
Unfortunately money still speaks loudly within the game, and possibly a better return for kyogo from the MLS moreso than European football for his services could well be in operation at present?
The potential bigger problem for ourselves, could be trying to find a replacement?
Struggling to see how a potential replacement would be that interested in joining ourselves, if the role of the striker is going to remain the same with ourselves.
The wide options are currently taking preference, with better and more goal scoring opportunities available to themselves at present.
So are we actually looking for a link type striker now, moreso than the poacher where kyogo excels?
Will be interesting to see how it all unfolds for ourselves, but certainly some huge calls for Rodgers to be making, regarding the current situation in play?
Hopefully the right calls will be made for all concerned, even if I haven’t a clue what the outcome of those decisions will be for ourselves?
St tams it seems to me you don’t like Kyogo or Hatate in my opinion they’re very important members of our team, Kyogo doesn’t get the service as Rodgers refuses to change his style
Inflexible, doctrinaire football where everything and everyone must conform to a system and individuality and spontaneity are discouraged.
Bit of a metaphor for modern life.
It has its limitations. Angeball is an extreme example but BR’s system has similar issues albeit less extreme.
St Tams/ POB,
I agree that Kyogo has missed loads of chances. I note that there is a lot of talk about his unselfish runs or making runs and players not finding him. In my opinion he is making the wrong runs. We can all see he goes early and wants the ball over the top into the space. The problem is the players seem to be under instruction not to play this ball so why is he continually making that run? BR wants him to come short and link the play. I don’t think it’s his strong suit but that’s what he’s being asked to do. If he can’t or won’t do it we need someone who will or we need a new system. We know that’s not going to happen. As for Hatate. It’s not that I don’t like him. I don’t like the fact that he has been terrible for most of BR’s tenure which is 18 months now. At what point do you get with the program or move on. His goals and assists record is not good enough for a midfielder who can’t do the other parts of the game. I did say on Saturday that I thought he was excellent but that’s not the norm sadly.
Agree with those who think that if an offer of +/- £10 mill for Kyogo was received i believe the club would be foolish not to seriously consider it. 30 years of age, diminishing goal to game stats that shows little evidence of improving (be that the fault of the tactical set up or simply poor finishing on his part). The only caveat being that there would need to be a decent, goal scoring, non project, striker lined up to replace him. BTW i think the ‘wee man’ is a brilliant striker on his day, hence the alleged Man city interest last season, however he is missing far too many chances of the ‘sitter’ variety of late. Hey but what do i know, i still contend Anto Stokes was a good striker🤨
It looks like another typical lawwell transfer window.
Motherwell knock back £2.5 million from Udinese for Lennon Miller
The Kyogo Conundrum right enough! What a player, what a character and what an icon for our Club. He is as close to Henke as I’ve seen and as a Tim there surely can be no greater accolade!
But he’s fallen off a cliff since BR#2. Or has he? Is the form of Kyogo down to our perceptions of him in the Ange system or has he regressed under BR? He was an absolutely dynamic finisher under Ange. His speed of thought and movement fitted Angeball perfectly, especially in our League. He has laboured under Brendan. Of course he misses chances, St Tam’s, there isn’t a player on the planet who doesn’t miss chances, and if he didn’t miss chances there’s no way he’d ever have been at Parkheid.
Are his stats diminishing, as Oglach says? Well, last season 14 out of 38 League games and this season 10 out of 22 suggests that’s wrong, too! Perhaps he is adapting to the way he’s been asked to play. The numbers suggest that is the case but he’s not the goal a game striker he was in Ange’s last season.
Conundrum, indeed, but I wouldn’t be letting him go this window, not for all the sake in Japan.

Jobo it wasn’t your posting a list of songs that screwed up the site. I initially thought it might have been due to the length of the post and numbers, and I temporarily moved it outwith the days leader.
However it was later approved and re-instated after finding a paste in BMCUW post that had caused one of our plugins to throw a tantrum.

It’s not looking too pretty, that’s for sure. But our two signings last January came very late in the window,so there is hope yet.

Hi Bobby:
That was a great lead article, and I share all your views on Kyogo. I love the wee man, including his skill, speed, guts, athleticism, smile, modesty and humble attitude. He has been an absolute credit to Celtic.
One of my favourite goals of his was his latching on to a superb first time side of the foot pass from Jota, and racing away to convert against Ferencvaros. He has also been a Hunskelper supreme. We would be mad to lose him this window.
It is one of my earnest hopes that both he and Idah shove the media criticism of their performances down their collective throats. Kyogo can adapt, viz his superb pinpoint cross to Yang in the box recently to result in a penalty. I think Brendan would be well advised to vary our tactics to help the wee man. Kuhn could hit the byline more often for cutbacks, rather than always going inside, and we could also relieve a high press more often with high balls over the top for Maeda, Kuhn and Kyogo.
I want to see the wee man smiling again!
Adam has more pressure on him because of his price tag, which is no fault of his. We dillied and dallied, had no Plan B to pivot to, Norwich realized this, and took us for mugs.
And again this window, almost zero has happened so far. We are so dilatory, it drives me nuts. The longer we wait, the more opportunities get closed off.
As a team, our shot ratio to time of possession is very poor, and is related to the length of time it takes us to get out of our own half. I was puzzled by one of Brendan’s comments about Yang recently. He said that he worked very hard at training, and spent extra time practicing shooting. Eh?! Where is the evidence of that on the park? He turns down opportunities to shoot each time he plays.
Take a peek at the games in all 3 European competitions the next 3 days. If history is any guide, many of the goals scored will be of 2 varieties – lightning counterattacks following change of possession, and set piece goals from free kicks and rehearsed moves at corners.
We are not good at either. I hope tomorrow will be different.

Just put on Galatasaray vs Kyiv in the Europa in time to see superb 35 yard left foot goal from Turkish center back Bardakci to make it 2-0 after 23 minutes.
Some fascinating ties today. It will be interesting to see how Villa do at Monaco, how Brugge do against mighty Juve, how Lewis Ferguson does vs Dortmund. The Atletico vs Leverkusen game should be a doozy!
Galatasaray’s first goal was a Davinson Sanchez header from a corner. First set piece goal of the next 3 days.
Assuming the Turks win, they will be 3rd in the Europa League table. Kyiv will be 36th, the only team with 0 points. It is ironic that the team they knocked out of the Champions League, Sevco, sit 8th on 11 points. Strange game, fiba’.
That is a fantastic read BMCUWP, much obliged.
I wouldn’t wish to criticise wee Kyogo who has been an absolute credit, just a pity his powers seem to be on the wane.
Legendary status achieved.
Well done to Chalmersbhoy and everyone on SC for the amazing work, also not forgetting the late, great SFTB who got the last charity drive off the ground with the first donation from his wee predictor competition.
