Ugly Rumours
Morning,all.
In football-apart from Celtic winning,of course-there is surely only one thing better than the huns getting beat. And that’s them losing the deciding goal in added time just after they had equalised. Hopefully it knocks the stuffing right out of them-it finally shut McCoist up at last, which is a blessing! A couple of additional injuries on the night won’t do them any favours either, but then, there are still about ten days left in the window for them to buy someone.
You won’t see me donating to the whip-round though!
The reason I start the article talking about them is really only to allow me to discuss our own dealings (or rumours, as business has been non-existent) this month. Few of us won’t have seen Wednesday night’s match, even if it was only a highlights package. All who did will have been mightily impressed that Kyogo hit a first half hat trick. Has he got his mojo back again,we wondered. Or is it just a faint echo of better times?
Of course, the question is academic on a number of fronts. Not least that all three were chalked off! But then came the news from the various rumour mills and “insiders” that he was over in France yesterday to put the finishing touches to a contract with Rennes. Surely one of our most puzzling transfer deals in recent years, especially given the timing. I gave my thoughts on this in Tuesday’s article, and they haven’t changed. I could accept him leaving in the summer-he clearly hasn’t taken to the role that BR requires him to play as it doesn’t play to his strengths-but to sell him now, with an important European tie in Birmingham next week plus two league matches against Dundee and Motherwell before the close of the window makes no sense.
If the rumours are true, and it now looks a nailed-on certainty, he will go with my best wishes. I’m sure that is the case for most of us. But the timing really sucks. It leaves us with only Idah and Maeda as two recognised strikers, neither of whom features there regularly from the start. Worse of course is that Maeda is definitely suspended for the Villa game, and quite possibly the first leg of the play-off. We also have the largely untried but promising Kenny and Cummings, the latter of whom still hasn’t signed a contract extension. I can’t in all honesty recommend this move whatsoever, and for a derisory €10m it makes less sense by the minute.
One rumour getting a fresh airing is the return of Jota, who is ironically unwanted at Rennes. That is the second club where he has failed to settle since he left us only eighteen months ago, but we all remember how outstanding he was in his two years with us. Just a pity that as a winger, he might find himself beating half the opposition then finding there’s no striker in the box for the final ball! Would I break the habits of a lifetime by welcoming back a player who had played for us previously? Well, I always want our signings to succeed, and he will be no different. But my indifference to prodigals remains. Wanting him to succeed and expecting him to match up to his previous standards are hardly the same thing.
The same can be said about another rumour, this time concerning Tierney. We all know the main reason he left, which was to avoid being maimed in Scotland with the tacit approval of the referees. I certainly didn’t blame him for wanting out, his career wouldn’t have lasted very long had he remained with us. He started very well indeed at Arsenal, and their fans certainly appreciated him. But then, for some reason, Arteta took a serious dislike to him and dropped him from his plans. I don’t suppose his various injuries helped; managers definitely prefer their players to be injury-free, not injury-prone. The rumour, as most of you will know, is that he has signed a pre-contract to join us in the summer, with the clubs currently negotiating a loan deal till the end of the season.
Signing a left back is fast becoming a priority for us. Taylor shows no sign of staying on, and Valle is rumoured-that word again-to be on the verge of leaving for lowly Como in Italy. I presume he likes lakes because they aren’t much of a side, but that is for him and Barcelona to decide. It leaves us with only Scales and the teenager Frame as left backs on the books, so you can understand the urgency. But those injury concerns won’t go away, even if none of us would wish it to be the case.
I don’t like discussing rumours, but the point of doing so in an article is that…
All in all, it has been a dreadful January transfer window so far. I wouldn’t go as far as to compare it to 2009, but it doesn’t seem to have been planned out in advance. So much for our new head of recruitment, for the manager with a plan and an eye for a player, for our CEO who is rapidly turning into the new absentee landlord. We’ve had an excellent season so far, and I’d hate to see it go up in smoke just because of some strange recruitment decisions. Every time I think the bad old days of ringing up the cash register at the first sight of a euro or pound note had gone, something always seems to bring them back into my nightmares. As ever, we have no say in the matter, no voice in the decision-making. But it doesn’t mean we have to be happy about it.

POTY Competition Update.
*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #35 CELTIC 1 YOUNG BOYS 0 (Benito (o.g.))*
Good evening, friends.
An extraordinary European night under the Celtic Park lights ultimately saw Celtic meet one of most folks’ targets for season 2024-25 – a guaranteed top 24 spot in the Champions league.
The first half had absolutely everything with more highs and lows than the Pepsi Max. Here’s a brief timeline of that first 45 –
6 A defence splitting pass from Engels put Kyogo through on goal and Mr Furahashi battered the ball into the net, only to be (correctly) flagged offside.
9 McGregor brke from midfield and fed Kuhn on the right Nicolas came inside, jinked past 3 (or was it 4) but his netbound shot was deflected for a corner.
15 A ball over thye top put Kyogo clear on goal but, having decided to shoot early, the effort went disappointingly wide.
17 Johnston’s cross from the right looked to sail past everyone, but Maeda with his back to goal brought it down, then over his shoulder and almost turned to get a shot away.
22 Meade broke into the box and despite a clear push in the back there was no penalty.
25 A Hatate left foot low curler was tipped round the post.
30 On our high press, McGregor nicked a 50/50 ball through to Kyogo who’s shimmie sent the keeper the wrong way and the ball was in the net for a goal at last – but 90 seconds later it was (correctly) disallowed for a foul by McGregor.
33 Kuhn played a lovely Crossfield pass out to Maeda and his cross into Kyogo lad to a fairly easy tap in. But it was (correctly) offside again. Kyogo now became the first player I ever remember having a disallowed hat trick!
39 Talor chased a loose ball into the box and was hauled to the ground with a hand round the throat – a clear penalty was correctly awarded but why no card (yellow or red) against the defender who made no attempt to play the ball yet stopped the goal opportunity?
40 This moment was my fault. 15 minutes before the game I said to a friend that my worry was that Engels has a 100% record from penalties with 5 or maybe 6 already scored; I suggested he was due to miss one! And he did, a pretty tame effort easily saved.
42 A cross into the box was headed clear. Hatate caught it on the volley from 25 yards but the keeper dived to parry away the goal bound effort.
So, incredibly, we went into half time goalless and yet I was exhausted having celebrated our 2 “goals” and the award of our penalty. Surely we would ultimately make one count?
The second half saw Young Boys come more into the game and have a few forays around Celtic’s box. And equally, Celtic’s own chances on goal decreased from that amazing first half.
Celtic did come close on 55 minutes when Trusty got a strong header onto an inswinging corner only for his effort to clip the top of the bar. A more worrying moment arrived 7 minutes later when Young Boys built a good attack down the left. A cut back from the bye line to the penalty spot was perfect for the oncoming striker but his strong effort was well saved by Shmeichel who then also managed to save the attempt from the rebound. As good as a goal at the other end!
Celtic kept plugging away and introduced Bernardo and Valle after 69 minutes, replacing Engels and Taylor. Then on 75 minutes Idah replaced the departing (quite literally as it turns out?) Kyogo.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 86th minute. Hatate played the best pass of the night, a beautifully weighted ball into the path of Idah who bore down on goal, Adam’s close range clip was saved by the foot of the goalie but the ball then ricocheted off the defender and rolled into the empty net. For once, Celtic actually benefited from last minute calamite heartache having been on the wrong end of similar goals in recent years.
Just as the board was going up to indicate an additional 5 minutes stoppage time Celtic went down to 10 men. A rather harsh red in my opinion, when the referee had seen the original kick and decided to award a yellow. Scales came on for Kuhn to bolster the defence and ultimately Celtic kept the required clean sheet to win the match by a goal to nil.
A fantastic night’s entertainment.
We have now played 35 games this season, winning 26, drawing 7 and losing 2. We have scored 94 and conceded 28 (domestically it’s 83-18 and in Europe it’s 11-10). Thank you so much to the 81 who voted this time around. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Linked with a loan deal for Evan Ferguson, Brighton striker
Looks like Lisbon not happening tomorrow 😢
BADABING
Hasnt he been injured for most of the season? Plus,Brighton would want about £50m for him,so a loan at best.
BMCUW- As impressed as you on that one
Bobby
Like yourself, I am also currently confused by which direction we are actually heading in, during this window?
Definitely didn’t see kyogo moving on, and still in a state of shock that it was even considered, let alone allowed to actually happening.
Even a return to jota, as to maybe softened the blow, hardly covers up the massive risk factors involved imo.
Course the anti board brigade will be out in force now, but personally believe attention should be upon Rodgers for potentially sanctioning such deals, mid season, with the amount of risk factors involved, hardly makes any sense to me at present?
Tierney deal, I still expect to happen next week.
Yet still nothing regarding Taylor and his future plans still.
Would be expecting valle to move on also upon the arrival of Tierney, but what is the situation regarding Taylor?
Our squad still centers around a 20man SPFL squad, with the extra cover bringing it up to 25 for CL.
So potentially kyogo, Palma and valle could be regarded as our 3 changes within our squad for CL.
But still possibly maybe another 4 changes to our squad will be potentially in place for next season.
So could be looking at about 7 changes at least over the next 2 transfer windows to our squad imo?
But without actually any confirmed signing still, we potentially find ourselves in a state of changes coming, without much direction in which way we are intending of heading?
Could the potential changes in the offering, mean changes to our team set up and style of play?
Of just extra numbers to fit into the current set up, where we have looked like struggling at times, regarding squad depth?
At present way to many questions without answers at present, and believe that it’s far more a Rodgers issue to get right, moreso than turning the blame upon the board for the current situation imo?
JOHNNO
I’m very much with you on this regarding who is to blame for the loss of Kyogo and for the rest of the shambles that this window is fast turning into. I thought I’d said as much with
“I could accept him leaving in the summer-he clearly hasn’t taken to the role that BR requires him to play as it doesn’t play to his strengths-but to sell him now, with an important European tie in Birmingham next week plus two league matches against Dundee and Motherwell before the close of the window makes no sense.”
and
“So much for our new head of recruitment, for the manager with a plan and an eye for a player, for our CEO who is rapidly turning into the new absentee landlord.”
though perhaps I should have been more clear about it.
Rodgers apparently has the final say on departures, and if so,Kyogo is only leaving on the say-so of the manager. I’d like to think he has a plan in place, but he’s certainly not letting on about it.
Keep in mind, having qualified for the play-offs, there is no more money, unless they win the playoff (against a Real Madrid, that is unlikely). Can spend 20 milllion, and the chances of beating a team like that dont really change. And the chance of losing the league is slim, even with no signings. So not much incentive for big spending at the moment.
It is far too early to judge what is happening in the window. The Kyogo issue has been apparent for some time. There has been enough time to explore targets, e.g. Louie Barry was probably one. Hopefully others are on the agenda, and not Ross Stewart.
The Kierney thing is a bit more concerning. Here we are at 23 January, if there is a pre- contract why is it not announced? My fear is that there isn’t one! Why is the Taylor issue not resolved by now? Personally, I think GT is playing Ukrainian roulette. He will sign at the last minute. It is his right but frankly it is defecate or get off the pot time! In any case, in my opinion, how GT is instructed to play, is the major weakness in BR’s system. I’d like to see the position eliminated.
On Jota, I doubt that he has declined irreparably in 1.5 seasons that he has been away, but is he the type of wide player that BR wants? IMHO, Kuhn’s effectiveness is limited because he is told to cut inside all the time, when the optimal is to head to the bye line and cut back behind the defence. It is a move that is so obvious that it hurts every-time it is ignored. Jota is that type of winger. So is BR really interested?
All of these issues and more at play at the moment.
On more important issues, personally, it seems I am cancer free 😀
Hop, skip, hop, Rebus
Talking of ugly rumours – very large pinches of salt required.

REBUS67
That is fantastic news, mate. I’m delighted for you and all your loved ones.
Bobby
It’s common enough to look for blame, especially upon decision making that we generally don’t agree with, especially within the footballing world and even more so at our club.
Not personally interested in the blame game, as at present seeing a huge problem, without what the solutions are going to be?
Regardless going to Villa in a CL match without both kyogo and Maeda is nothing more than irresponsible are far as I’m concerned.
Sending a Celtic team with an attitude of not caring about the match, as we are already qualified for the knockout phase.
Still isn’t a potential attitude I like seeing especially at only the mid season point?
Also factor in players such as,
Kyogo, Palma, Yang, Hatate, Taylor, Valle, Welsh, Rocki, Bain and Monty from this season 25man CL squad named this season, along with such limited game time McCowan gets in our bigger matches.
Then already some amount of changes to be expected before our next CL squad is named?
That currently is potentially standing at 10 players that haven’t improved whatsoever under Rodgers.
His get out clause is that he won’t be getting any blame attached to him as his signings.
But have we still got some amount of work required to become a team of Rodgers vision, with a squad to match the demands required?
Or is he really going to become another lawwell puppet in keeping the profit margins high within the selling of our players?
Rebus
Brilliant news, delighted for you

Great article, Bobby. What irritates the hell out of me is that we have a club, Rennes, publicly stating Kyogo will play for them at the weekend. Bad as that is, it could be mitigated somewhat if we had a reciprocal arrangement in place regarding Jota, or at a minimum, an oven ready replacement who could feature against Dundee. Instead, as per usual at tumbleweed KDS, our invisible Lord Lucan is nowhere to be found. Once again, another club has their ducks in a row in a timely fashion with a transfer, and we are lollygagging around while time is a wasting.
What a friggin way to run a railroad! It would make you boak.
Rebus
Great news on the health front!
Great stuff Rebus!
Morning all ,
Rebus,
Excellent news 👋👋👋👋
It would appear we are leaving ourselves decidedly short for the visit to Brum.
I commented yesterday on what I saw as changes required to the current squad, but didn’t expect to see Kyogo leaving with rather indecent haste, with no ready made replacement around, nor the Jota return appearing likely this window.
Two bits of business apparently done from my wish list. With hopefully a third, as KT is expected by Feb 3rd, subject to final negotiations on termination of his current contract.
I doubt there will be much movement in improving our midfield defects this window.
Over the last couple of months I haven’t been expecting anything from our game with Villa, and now anticipate the prospect of a severe “under the cosh”game, where escaping with an Atalanta like 0-0 is the most positive outcome I can see, and much more preferable to a Dortmund like horsing.
Given our structural weaknesses already mentioned in my last post, apparent against lowly YB but magnified when playing top 5 league opponents, the latter is the one I am mentally/emotionally preparing for.
Daizen’s incredibly stupid red leaves us with Idah for the lonely, detached workhorse upfront shift as we repel Villa’s relentless attacks.
An open 4-3-3 with a marked out the game Kühn and Palma/Yang on the left is a frightening prospect.
All 5 midfielders will be called upon ( at various times) to share an ominous burden on the night.
It could get messy, then again we might find some mental fortitude, on field leadership and physicality to keep us in the game.
Our next concern will be the worry of the play off round two and three weeks thereafter.
It would be helpful if we didn’t have to rely on Idah alone for those, assuming Daizen is still unavailable.
We have achieved the equivalent of a third place finish in old CL format terms.
That is a fantastic achievement for a team with our poor coefficient.
The next level in the new CL format will be a serious challenge to us. A necessary learning curve for next season, laying bare the areas to strengthen in the Summer.
Sorry to see Kyogo go, but if a player hires a new agent then it’s not to find him holiday deals abroad. Kyogo was intent on leaving and that’s all there is to it..
We need a goalscorer, but doubt we’ll find one soon for £10m. Idah is what you get for that.
Jota would help our improvement immensely in forward areas.
Good Morning Sentinels – Grand Day To Be A Tim…
Johnno @ 12:44 am,
Not a huge “Rodgers” fan are you!?
Let me put your mind at rest, this time last year the recruitment approach at Celtic was reviewed following a disastrous Summer 2023 transfer window.
We have done much better since then.
How long Kyogo wanted to leave Celtic is a matter of conjecture, what is not a matter of conjecture was that Kyogo did wish to leave Celtic and the manager is on record as stating that Celtic FC would not be standing in the way of players that wanted to leave.
Celtic’s victory against Young Boys on Wednesday was a major milestone in the Clubs history.
The fact it has triggered a predefined flurry of transfer activity tells us we always had a plan if success in the league stage of the UCL was reached.
This would have undoubtedly been the plan hatched in the “Dublin” meeting at the end of December.
The principal shareholder, his son, the Executive, the football manager and recruitment manager were all present.
So yes, the “Board” as such would have little to do with the detail and implementing of this months recruitment, yet of course, the Executive are always reporting back to them.
So be in no doubts, we have some very smart, experienced folk beavering away at our recruitment goals, we will come out of this transfer window stronger than we went in.
It will help us to make a good account of ourselves in the UCL playoffs, the SFA Cup and the certain matter of a league Championship, in the short term.
Then in the medium term, if we win the league we will be preprepared to go forward to next seasons UCL qualifiers.
The UCL is now the only show in town
Hail Hail
Rebus,
Great news ✅✅✅✅
Let’s not kid ourselves.
The Villa game does count.
League position, status in play off draw, prize money and, most importantly, coefficient points. We need to improve our coefficient to guarantee direct entry into the big competition.
Rebus,
I’m really happy for you, buddy 💚
The wind seems determined to blow Bridgeton from the map!!
Could today be the day that the roof at snake mountain finally blows away
P.S. Great news Rebus.
Good Information Chairbhoy.

I get the kyogo deal
He changed agents mid summer window and presumably wanted a move.
He’s 30 and to get twice what we paid after a wonderful three and a half years is good business.
I don’t get the timing as loads to play for next week, finishing position, prize pot, qualifying draw with 2nd leg at home etc.
Either he has been told he could go once we had qualified or we need to do it now to get all the other moving parts in place.
If we come out the window with KT jota and the danish striker it will be acceptable. But apprehensive though as to how hungry jota is now.
Just had 1st power cut in south ayrshire, only off for 5 mins but this is just the start
Kevin @ 8:11 am,
Thanks – the UCL games at the end of January has made the winter window, even more of a challenge.
Hoop hoop hooray – Yes, there was an air of unseemly haste in Kyogo’s departure.
The Rennes manager was talking about him featuring in the Monaco game, so it looks like they were desperate to get him in.
Hail Hail
BMCUWPS,
You don’t look a gift horse in the mouth
Kyogo has been fantastic. He was a pivotal signing that led to three titles and direct access to the CL.
He seems desperate to leave.
Jota at five years his junior is a proven top class performer is desperate to return.
The deal breaker is that Rennes, due to their league position need Kyogo immediately. Do we hold off and face the prospect of losing Kyogo in the summer or bite the bullet and get Jota back?
There’s a lot of moving parts in these deals, it’s likely to be now or never.
Celtic have operated a shrewd recruitment model for years. We’ve followed Jota’s development since he was 16.
The problem is you don’t get it all your own way. There’s often a trade off, where a balance of risk and reward is involved.
Our hard earned position in the league and qualification for the next stage of the CL has bought us flexibility.
Kyogo has scored 1 goal in 7 in the CL this term. That’s not a criticism just a fact. Probably exacerbated by our style of play, particularly against the better sides. Brendan made a telling comment recently when he stated that Kyogo had started out as a winger. Maybe he wants a different type of player ‘up top’.
Wednesday was a perfect example of the good and the bad of this Celtic team. A dominant first half a change of tactics by YB and we looked vulnerable in the second half. Our frailties have been exposed on a couple of occasions.
We need to mix it up, we are predictable.
We need to have the capacity to change our system of play. This was always Brendan’s strength at Leicester. Closing down areas of attack by subtle tactical changes. Players moved on, injuries and ultimately a lack of funds/recruitment undermined the team.
Kyogo has perhaps done us a final favour by agreeing to move to Rennes? Perhaps bringing back a couple of proven performers is a smart way around the unknown in terms of recruitment?
Especially if they are desperate to be at Celtic.
Anyway,
We started with Adam Idah upfront in Atalanta. We changed our approach and tried to hold up the ball against a top performing opponent.
(We also started Valle at left-back. Greg was substituted at half-time in Dortmund also.)
I’ve always thought that any transfer prior to qualification for the Play-Offs was unlikely, given the need to keep the focus on the squad and the availability of suitable players.
Good to see big Gustaf scoring for Twente last night. He’s become a 90 minute player in a higher standard of football in recent weeks. It’ll be interesting to see how Holm gets on in LA. Bernardo continues to impress. Hopefully Nawrocki gets game time somewhere this window.
All from a window, when we learned that you can’t cope with so many young players in one go It’s a balance of youth and experience that’s required.
Great times to be a Celtic supporter.
Painstaking work with the development of FSR and the introduction of the league format are game changers for us.
It’ll be interesting to see what Brendan says about the Kyogo/Jota situation in his press conference.
Great news too from Rebus this morning.
Surprising to read that auld Alf Garnett was glued to the Sevco game last night. You can’t take the Old Firm out of the man, I guess.
I gave up on Rangers years ago.

Brilliant news 👏🏻👏🏻
As you say Bobby,.
A new recruitment department and the best they can come up with is 2 ex players and a guy we’ve been.liked with for the last 18 months.
Where is the imagination.
Plenty of trouble in Manchester again last night, inside and outside stadium, and city centre……..you won’t see much in the rags about it though
Just read back .

Good morning friends and a Big Happy Stormy Friday to all who post or lurk on this fine site.
Stay safe today everyone – definitely a day for the hoose!
Great news on my read back there, Rebus. Nothing more important than health X
I’ve been n asking (Seems like Forever) To bring KT and Jota back + a defensive midfielder.
2 of 3 ain’t bad?
Still think we will be incomplete without a proper defendsive player to anchor the middle.
Also worth noting that we have just two weeks to register our playoff squad. So Mibbe that has something to do with the sudden flurry with a game still to go.
And great news rebus
I’m going to take back what I said io the Danish boy kvistgaarden after watching numerous tik toks and you tube videos this boy can play anmd d finish.but not the talles.get him in 🟩💚🟩🍀
Some quality mental gymnastics from the SSM, trying really hard not to say their favourites were causing chaos all over Manchester!
