Ugly Rumours
Morning,all.
In football-apart from Celtic winning,of course-there is surely only one thing better than the huns getting beat. And that’s them losing the deciding goal in added time just after they had equalised. Hopefully it knocks the stuffing right out of them-it finally shut McCoist up at last, which is a blessing! A couple of additional injuries on the night won’t do them any favours either, but then, there are still about ten days left in the window for them to buy someone.
You won’t see me donating to the whip-round though!
The reason I start the article talking about them is really only to allow me to discuss our own dealings (or rumours, as business has been non-existent) this month. Few of us won’t have seen Wednesday night’s match, even if it was only a highlights package. All who did will have been mightily impressed that Kyogo hit a first half hat trick. Has he got his mojo back again,we wondered. Or is it just a faint echo of better times?
Of course, the question is academic on a number of fronts. Not least that all three were chalked off! But then came the news from the various rumour mills and “insiders” that he was over in France yesterday to put the finishing touches to a contract with Rennes. Surely one of our most puzzling transfer deals in recent years, especially given the timing. I gave my thoughts on this in Tuesday’s article, and they haven’t changed. I could accept him leaving in the summer-he clearly hasn’t taken to the role that BR requires him to play as it doesn’t play to his strengths-but to sell him now, with an important European tie in Birmingham next week plus two league matches against Dundee and Motherwell before the close of the window makes no sense.
If the rumours are true, and it now looks a nailed-on certainty, he will go with my best wishes. I’m sure that is the case for most of us. But the timing really sucks. It leaves us with only Idah and Maeda as two recognised strikers, neither of whom features there regularly from the start. Worse of course is that Maeda is definitely suspended for the Villa game, and quite possibly the first leg of the play-off. We also have the largely untried but promising Kenny and Cummings, the latter of whom still hasn’t signed a contract extension. I can’t in all honesty recommend this move whatsoever, and for a derisory €10m it makes less sense by the minute.
One rumour getting a fresh airing is the return of Jota, who is ironically unwanted at Rennes. That is the second club where he has failed to settle since he left us only eighteen months ago, but we all remember how outstanding he was in his two years with us. Just a pity that as a winger, he might find himself beating half the opposition then finding there’s no striker in the box for the final ball! Would I break the habits of a lifetime by welcoming back a player who had played for us previously? Well, I always want our signings to succeed, and he will be no different. But my indifference to prodigals remains. Wanting him to succeed and expecting him to match up to his previous standards are hardly the same thing.
The same can be said about another rumour, this time concerning Tierney. We all know the main reason he left, which was to avoid being maimed in Scotland with the tacit approval of the referees. I certainly didn’t blame him for wanting out, his career wouldn’t have lasted very long had he remained with us. He started very well indeed at Arsenal, and their fans certainly appreciated him. But then, for some reason, Arteta took a serious dislike to him and dropped him from his plans. I don’t suppose his various injuries helped; managers definitely prefer their players to be injury-free, not injury-prone. The rumour, as most of you will know, is that he has signed a pre-contract to join us in the summer, with the clubs currently negotiating a loan deal till the end of the season.
Signing a left back is fast becoming a priority for us. Taylor shows no sign of staying on, and Valle is rumoured-that word again-to be on the verge of leaving for lowly Como in Italy. I presume he likes lakes because they aren’t much of a side, but that is for him and Barcelona to decide. It leaves us with only Scales and the teenager Frame as left backs on the books, so you can understand the urgency. But those injury concerns won’t go away, even if none of us would wish it to be the case.
I don’t like discussing rumours, but the point of doing so in an article is that…
All in all, it has been a dreadful January transfer window so far. I wouldn’t go as far as to compare it to 2009, but it doesn’t seem to have been planned out in advance. So much for our new head of recruitment, for the manager with a plan and an eye for a player, for our CEO who is rapidly turning into the new absentee landlord. We’ve had an excellent season so far, and I’d hate to see it go up in smoke just because of some strange recruitment decisions. Every time I think the bad old days of ringing up the cash register at the first sight of a euro or pound note had gone, something always seems to bring them back into my nightmares. As ever, we have no say in the matter, no voice in the decision-making. But it doesn’t mean we have to be happy about it.

The KT 😉
You reckon this is the guy we have set our hearts on replacing the wee man??
BAD.id say so looks explosive and the brondby fans adore him.hes like a gymnast way they celebrations 😆😂🍀🍀🍀.watch him on tik Tok . impressive 🟩◻️🟧
2 short power outs in last 5 mins. Trees blown down close by over roads. Its a bit breezy in Ayr. Beach empty …….
Manchester evening news website reports on chaos prior and during game.
Morning all
Great news Rebus 67. Take care.
The storm seems to be building momentum in G20 and I am expecting WIFI and TV outages today and have fears of water getting in a balcony door due to be replaced early next month but right now as I sip a coffee I can see a blonde, pink, mini-dressed , atrociously actingJoan Collins in an episode of Space 1999 so things could be worse.
Sorry about Kyogo leaving – it suits Celtic’s suits for the idea that the player has driven this one (as he may well have done) but whatever the truth it does disappoint me that we are not going to have him anymore (I dare not broach the subject with 10-year-old Luca). His effectiveness in Champions’ League games was limited but we’ll miss him domestically. Without the 6 or 7 goals he’d likely have scored in the remaining 15 league matches the road to league retention could get bumpy
Jota’s return? I was disappointed and disgusted by every single thing about his leaving 18 months ago. I was also, less petulantly, not always convinced by him as a player- sublime moments for sure but lacking in a bit of substance perhaps. Personally I’d prefer him on the right and Kuhn on the left but our manager seems unlikely to try that. Tierney’s mooted return is potentially better news but the other names I’ve read we are interested in don’t do much for me- although I’d admit that in the case of the Brondby player it’s because I’ve never seen him play.
Assuming it goes on, tomorrow could he a tricky one. Dundee did well against us a week or so ago and in the lowest key match of the season gave us a hard game last time at Celtic Park whilst we may have a ‘reaction’ to Wednesday’s game. We’ll either draw or win by 4 goals or more.
Stay warm, dry and well.
Jimbo
Rebus- great news,onwards and upwards
Huns had tickets in the home end and got a tad excited when they equalised, which didn’t go down to well with the home support
Auldbhoy67- nothing here, really surprised Manchester Council didn’t tell Man Ure not to give them any tickets
Wonderful news Rebus. Don’t remember as destructive a wind in my lifetime, I’m about a mile in from the Ayrshire coast and it’s tearing through everything.
The KT,
Always good to get another opinion on players. I knew I liked what I had seen of the player, I just wanted someone else to back up what I thought.
Appreciate it, pal 👍
HailHail.
That looked like an old lady that went flying passed my window there! Problem is that I’m 3 up!! 😳
I take it the schools have been cancelled? Way to dangerous out there for the wee chilblains
Wee bit blowy. Good day for hanging out the washing here in Glasgow if you don’t mind going to Dunfermline to pick it up when it dries.
Rebus67 having been given the all clear on my own cancer treatments last year, most people won’t understand the sheer relief that notification gives you.
Not solely for myself/yourself, but it actually took me by surprise that my family were even more ecstatic for me than I was.
Your own family will be be over the moon, and rightly so. I truly hope that you have a genuine celebration with your loved ones, you both deserve such good news, and very well done on beating the big C.
Greater Manchester police say 39 arrests were made last night relating to Manchester United’s Europa League match against Rangers. Home club also investigating after scuffles broke out due to some away fans in the home section.
So with Bernabei out for 5million +/_ and Kyogo 10 million along with loans for Welsh -Agbaire and Holm getting them off the wage bill we have made another good profit in this window. Even by signing Jota for a reported 8 that should leave us a nice sum to find a decent striker without dipping into the bank.Include our CL money to come and we spend zero.
Come on Brendan and co lets get it done.
Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, I can’t get this bloody BBQ lit 🔥
😂😂😂
Rebus67, great news 👍👏
If Kyogo wanted to go then let him, we learnt our lesson in Lennys last gig, keeping players who want to go is a no no!
Wind nearing 70 mph aff the Forth, surprised I still have a greenhouse 🫣
BR said expects Kyogo and Jota moves to happen in next 24 hours, Kyogo said he wanted to leave a couple of months ago
Rebus – brilliant news and ASWGL too. 🕺🕺👍👍

Folks just a quick update on planned Jim ‘Pres’ Kennedy Tribute next Thursday 30th January.
We have to postpone the event due to unforeseen circumstances and all the relevant folk have been advised now.
I’ll try to get this going before end of Season ..maybe in time for our trip to ECL Final 😁
Apologies for any inconvenience caused.
PS I’d appreciate if one of the Shipbank Shipwrecks would advise CQN Folks.

Great news to hear on such a miserable day.
You said:
In any case, in my opinion, how GT is instructed to play, is the major weakness in BR’s system. I’d like to see the position eliminated.
I couldn’t agree more. As soon as a game starts we effectively go into a 2-1-4-3 formation. 2 CHs at the back, Calmac sitting in front of them and then the 4 in midfield (which includes AJ and GT in his inverted role.
My point is that if you are going to play an extra man in MF surely we’d be better served starting Bernardo or McCowan rather than the very limited Taylor?
Big Audio Dynamite @ 9:41 am,
Cheers!! Hope you guys are staying safe, sounds horrendous

Billy,
The problem with Greg is his inability to keep possession! Lost all patience with the boy, he simply isn’t good enough to play for us, especially where we want to go.
Replacing him with KT will immediately make us much harder to get at. I know Brendan says he likes him, but hopefully he is only back up from now on!
I think Rodgers and Kyogo had a deal KF would stay as long as we had a chance to qualify for next round in UCL. Wednesday’s win meant Kyogo can leave. Not good but getting Jota back is huge.
Rebus….happy for you….won’t feel as cold in Ottawa either
Credit to the YB fans who showed how to support your team, even though they had very little to celebrate in this season’s champions league.
The way they treated the kid who waved and wanted to swap scarfs was brilliant. I hope they go on to secure their place in the top league.
BAD
I agree completely. KT will solidify the defence and I look forward to seeing his Danny McGrain overlaps again .
Brendan confirms Kyogo wanted to leave Celtic and that Jota’s return to Celtic should be completed soon. No update on KT situation.
Rebus67
That’s fantastic news. Pleased for you, mate.
Rebus,
I rarely pop on here these days but that is some wonderful news.
I’m delighted for you and yours.
HH.
Looking good for Celtic just now.
Nobody hammering Greg Taylor.
Oh wait !
Billy Bhoy… play a midfielder in there instead of him ?
I’d email BR soon as.
I’m assuming these are quotes lifted from the pre match press conference which should be up online in the next couple of hours but here’s word for word what the gaffer said…
“We’re in a fantastic position, it’s just the nature of life here.
“Players do really well, they move on.
“The sad thing is always for supporters because they feel that certain connection to an individual.
“Kyogo, during his time here, had this connection with the supporters and our young supporters, that was there for all to see.
“You can see his happiness at being here.
“Players will move on and people will move on.
“We just have to thank him for everything that he’s done here, for his time and the contribution that he’s made.
“Like I said, there’s still a while to go in the window.
“You can see things will happen in this last week or so. That’s always the aim.
“We certainly didn’t plan to sell Kyogo and then be any weaker.
“Our idea is to be stronger coming out of January.”
“It’s not finalised yet, but he’s a player that clearly would be an absolutely incredible addition to our squad given what he’s done here before and his qualities.
“Hopefully we can confirm that in the next 24 hours.”
“We were reluctant to sell. He’s one of our top players and someone who fits perfectly into how we play.
“But Kyogo expressed an interest to leave a number of months back.
“That expression becomes stronger until we get to this stage where he’s getting ready to leave.
“Sadly, we then have to do a deal and look to finalise that for him.
“Listen, he’s been an incredible player for the club for three and a half years.
“Like I said, he’s not someone that we wanted to lose, but we have to accept where he’s at.
“And after the work that he’s done to give to Celtic at his age and where he’s at, then we have to respect that.”
👍Rebus
🍀
Billy,
KT on the left and AJ on the right :))
When was the last time we had a full back pairing like that!?
Happy daze.
Steve
Why don’t you just respond to the point I made?
Why play GT in midfield and leave Paulo and Luke – who are far superior players – on the bench?
BTW I’ve just watched our winning goal there on X.
Kasper to Trusty to Valle to Hatate – all one touch football. If Taylor had been playing he’d have almost certainly returned it straight back to Trusty – and we wouldn’t have scored!
If GT stays he’ll be decent back up to KT. He’s been a good servant to the club but to improve the club we need to improve certain positions and he’s top on most Celtic fans lists.
Kyle Walker (34), Man city to Milan on loan.
Was always a massive fan of him!
Not venturing out today Billy are you, ? tree down and they’ve closed Birdston Rd

Great news
Billy Bhoy,
Re Taylor and midfield, I agree. We would be better with an extra FT midfielder since GT rarely functions as a LB. It will be interesting to see what happens if KT comes back because I do not see him as an inverted full back. If we assume Engels is a starter, then Bernardo would be my choice as his defensive abilities are better than those of McCowan. The latter could sub for Hatate at 60 minutes when he is usually flagging.
Rebus
Just been going back over the Champions League stats and I think we may rest Alistair Johnston against Villa. One more booking and he serves a suspension, group stage bookings (as far as I can tell) aren’t wiped out until the quarter finals.
We are trying to buy a striker. Time is short, and we have 2 weeks to register him for CL. The selling club know this, know we have money, and know we become more desperate, the closer the deadline approaches.
Sound familiar?
I wonder if we are looking at another striker this window. I assume the Ross Stewart rumour was just a daft invention by somebody determined to show how crud spreads on social media. Anyone got any leads?
Thanks to everyone for their best wishes. It was appreciated muchly. I apologise for bringing personal health issues onto the site but I thought it appropriate to let you know the outcome once I had broached the subject.
Rebus
some questions
Maeda and Kuhn seem to be the two most important forwards in BR’s system. Maeda for his pressing and Kuhn for his goals (which aren’t coming from the middle ). Where does Jota fit in?
As others have suggested, BR seems to like GT to play more as an auxilariy mid rather than an orthodox left back. Now that works to a degree because GT supplements Calmac (who is never a number 6). Without GT there, teams will drive a truck past Calmac in that role. I see KT as a LB or at least a wingback (although Arteta didn’t play him as he didn’t rate him as a wingback), or even a left sided CB, but not an auxiliary mid.
Unless BR is going to change his way of playing, how do these moves make sense?

The Torrance Road is closed too. The only way out is via Antermony Rd.
I was going to nip up to Hayston and see if I could get a hole in one at the Par 5 ninth but I think I’ll just leave it.
