Surprise!!!

Morning,all.

An eventful few days for Celtic supporters as well as for fans of other clubs in the country. Celtic started it all off with a pleasant and reasonably uneventful display against a Raith Rovers who were frankly out of their depth on the day. 5-0 certainly didn’t flatter us, and Raith really only had one chance of note, a well-hit strike capably dealt with by debutant Sinisalo in goal.

The youngster has waited a while for his chance, as Schmeichel has had an outstanding season to date. There have been opportunities for us to give him a start, as well as plenty more when he could have been brought on late in the game. BR had opted not to do so,  which meant that he started this one cold. Apart from the save, I was also impressed by the way he commanded his box, especially at corner kicks. It’s been a while since I can remember a Celtic goalie making it his every time a corner came in, even if his two-handed punches could do with some more venom in them.

The big news of the day of course was reserved for Daizen Maeda. Not content with having his two toddlers standing alongside him and stealing the pre-match parade, he then went on to score a hat-trick. He might regret that when his two kids are squabbling over who gets to keep the matchball! A comfortable enough day out, even if it seems that proceedings on the pitch weren’t quite enough to keep ATHINGOFBEAUTY nice and toastie in the stands!!!

Attention then switched to the following day, with some decent enough offerings available. The pick of them was obviously at Villa Park, but the big cup shocks of the day were elsewhere, and about 550 miles apart. Few would have bet against 1/5 favourites Liverpool at Plymouth, but their faith would have been justified. Shockerooni indeed, as the club which recently fired Rooney and are rock-bottom of Tier Two saw off the runaway EPL leaders.

The Magic Of The Cup,indeed…

A bigger shock was to follow closer to home though. R2ngers were a ludicrous 1/40 with the bookies prior to kick off, and I believe Queen’s Park were priced at a handsome 33/1 as they lined up at Ibrox. This was a clash of Scotland’s oldest club against its newest. And bugger me backwards if the oldies didn’t go and bloody win it! To say I was surprised would be something of an understatement. To say that huns everywhere were f…..g furious doesn’t do the result justice either. This was a  cataclysmic shock to everyone, and congratulations are due to everyone involved with the winning club. Especially their long-suffering supporters, who love their club as much as every fan of every club loves their club.

Football loves its fairytales, but it’s the guys and gals who turn up every week for the grind, the guys filled with optimism and dread, who ensure that days where dreams can come true happen.

Tomorrow nights sees its own potential tale of giant-killing as one of the biggest clubs in the game come to town. I think I’ve only seen us play Bayern once, under BR Mk I a few years ago. We acquitted ourselves well that night, with CalMac equalising the Bayern opener before we finally succumbed to the relentless pressure. It was two soft goals that night, and Bayern will have known that the scoreline flattered them. Changed days indeed from when  they came to town in the early 2000s and we battered them 0-0, watching them celebrate their achievement as though they had just won the bloody trophy!

I had hoped that Saturday’s table-topping clash with holders Leverkusen would distract them from this, maybe see them resting some players ahead of that. But Leverkusen needlessly dropped two points on Saturday, leaving them eight points behind. I think that ship has sailed, and our last hope with it.

But wait! What’s this I hear incoming? Rumours that Celtic did indeed follow my advice to appeal the two-match ban on Maeda-and only went and won the bloody thing?!!! Well, who knew? Why did this take so long? Practically the eve of the event, and all of a sudden, our manager has a selection problem?

This is undoubtedly terrific news for everyone with Celtic firmly in their heart and head. Maeda is currently our man in form, playing out of his skin and the worthy winner of our last three POTY ratings. He’s scoring goals for fun, too. Strangely, he is being played out of position in his favoured position-if that makes any sense-and is having a ball. It makes perfect sense to have him play there on Wednesday night, doesn’t it? With Jota On The Wing and Kühn on the right?

Well…

Does it also make sense to play him on the left, to utilise his tracking? He still scores from there, but by adding his defensive abilities to the side, we reduce our attacking threat-even if Idah has shown himself to be coming onto more of a game recently. Playing him wide would also mean dropping Jota completely. I’m gonna leave the match preview and any likely team prediction to MAHE tomorrow, but this unexpected piece of good news has undoubtedly given BR a very pleasant headache, I reckon. But then, who doesn’t love surprises? And I’d love to have another one around 10pm tomorrow night.

Football,eh?

Last year, our charity drives raised over £4000 for deserving causes. You are truly a wonderful collective, giving selflessly to others in need.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The bulk of the money was split fairly evenly between our two nominated causes, which were
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and Blood Cancer UK.

New Year, New Cause! From 1st January till 30th June, we will switch our attentions to raising funds for another source of wonderful work on behalf of those who need it most.

Morning all,

Excellent leader Bobby 👋👋👋👋

I also thought, although soft, Maeda kicking out at an opponent was a red, and automatic 2 game ban.

But,

Wait,

“Why don’t we appeal ? “

Celtic have that Di Marco fella on speed dial.

” Let’s give him a buzz “.

Remember him, well the SFA/SPFL certainly do !!!!!!!

Have.Celtic pulled a Masterstroke here and surprised us all ????

Well credit where credit is due and well done Celtic and especially the person who possibly lifted the phone and said “ Hello Nick is that you ……”

Of course it could all be fantasy, but in any case I’m delighted we have Daizen available for tomorrow night.

Bobby,

Momentum is with us , and keeping in mind the quality of opponents, our entire team has started moving the ball with more purpose and pace…accuracy has improved significantly and some players have learned how to shoot from edge of box ( or permitted to?)

Happy Monday …Inclusion of Maeda v Bayern Munich…raises likelihood we can grab a goal …even two.

As ever, no hiding places for our mid and defence.

Daizen in is a huge boost to squad and supporter morale. This feel good factor should add a bit extra to Wednesday night’s performance and atmosphere.

Let’s hope we keep our discipline and don’t get picked off in the first few minutes. Play streetwise, start quickly and stay sharp.
Resting 9 at the weekend was obviously the sensible approach to the game and should have us fit n raring to go.

We don’t need an uphill struggle, but having said that we are at home, and having let Leipzig in we eventually did the needful with a quality recovery performance.

A win and it gives us something to play for next week.
Not forgetting another €2m to add to the bulging strongbox sitting in the Boardroom.

Good morning, friends.
A great summary of the last 72 hours, Bobby.
The Daizen news is very welcome and at least means that Jones of us can be sure of the starting 11. Kuhn will certainly start. Do we start with Adam in the middle, Daizen out left then bring Jota on the left and move Daizen into replace Idah? Or do we start Daizen up front, play Jita on the left and see how long he lasts before moving Daizen wide and bringing on Idah? Or will it be Yang and Kenny who feature! Excitement starting to build.

Bobby

Certainly been a few days of some welcome and pleasant surprises all right.

The most welcome one for myself anyway, was having Maeda available for tomorrow night.
Any welcome surprises that benefit ourselves, only increases the fury and anger within hun scum. Even though that’s of no surprise, it’s always very welcome to ourselves.
And to cap it all off, a home draw in the Scottish cup also.

With so much good news and surprises coming our way at present, still hoping that the bubble doesn’t burst anytime soon, especially tomorrow night.

Be amazed if Maeda doesn’t start tomorrow night, especially as first name on a team sheet upon current form, and rightly so imo.
As we are at home, I think Maeda would be more beneficial to ourselves playing the central strikers role?
Harsh upon idah, again on current form and his exploits at villa, but possibly needs first could come into the reckoning also?

Maeda is a full 90 minute player, that Rodgers trusts hugely, and another requirement needed tomorrow night. Having a player like Maeda who is capable of producing across the whole front line, is a managers dream to have, the downside for ourselves is that potentially many of the bigger boys, with bigger budgets available could well be taken notice also?

Expecting 2 totally different types of games against bayern, which may well involve 2 completely different roles for Maeda to play, within the overall tie.
But possibly the best player we have of being capable of doing so for ourselves also.
Again highlights the importance of the player to ourselves at present.

Of course we aren’t a 1 man team thankfully, and a massive all round team effort will be required, for the 90 plus minutes.
But believe that we are more than capable of producing and delivering the required winning results also imo?

Looking at today’s CL match ups, and I recognize I may be a bit of a dinosaur, but a game like today’s Brest-PSG match where it is two teams from the same country simply doesnt hold the same intrigue as, for example, Man City v. Real, or any of the other games.

Not to say it wont be good football, but I like the old days when European cup meant a contrast of nations, and usually styles.

Having said that, I think a few of the games today could be real good. The City Real game should be good,as their is lots of off field stuff to add to what should be good football.

Johnno

All part of the changing face of football, and got no real complaints really.
The CL may be regarded as the flagship of European football, yet still doesn’t feel right that you can win the CL, and still without being the best team in your own country?
Hardly makes you able to claim, of being the best team in Europe?

Only enjoy the competition with our involvement, don’t bother to much with it, when we aren’t.

But here’s one for you.
Would you sacrifice winning another treble, for beating bayern over the course of the tie, given a choice between the two?

Mike in Toronto
February 11, 2025 3:24 pm

Johnno

Notwitstanding my comment, and my general agreement that the game has changed, I actually really enjoy the CL for the most part. And I think the changes this year have made it the most unpredictable and fun tournament that I can remember. And the football is just on a different planet from the dross most SPL teams serve up.

As for the CL/treble thing… I think I would be okay with losing the treble if it meant beating Bayern. Now, if Sevco was still in the competition, I might be less okay …

yourself?

Johnno
February 11, 2025 3:28 pm

MIT

The same myself.
Thinking our club needs a big statement CL victory moreso than another treble imo.
Maybe not the same conclusion if hun scum were still in the Scottish cup, as still struggle losing to them in anything, doubt that will change, within the changing game either.

Hoop hoop hooray
February 11, 2025 3:34 pm

Now that sevco have gone I would 100% sacrifice the Scottish cup to knock Bayern out. It would still be talked about long after a final win against hearts

Mike in Toronto
February 11, 2025 3:52 pm

Then there is the financial aspect …. get $1 million for winning the knockout playoff, but with a chance to win a further $11million if you win the round of 16 game.

That is compared to the $400,000 teams get for winning the SPL! I think the winner of the League Cup gets around $300,000, but cant recall what the winner of the SFA Cup gets.

Sorry about the struggles with Joan.

For next season, it could be 5 or 6 English teams I think …. not my preference, but, the changes have all been UEFA’s response to try to stop the big clubs setting up their own breakaway Euro league …

from a Celtic perspective, that is probably a good thing, as this years changes have given Celtic a better chance of progressing, and Celtic were/are unlikely to be invited to a top tier breakaway league.

With so much money in the bank this must be the time to rebuild the main stand. If not now then when? With a season ticket waiting list of thousands it will quickly pay for itself. Increase capacity by 10000 or more and hammer sevco into the ground. A European league will surely come and we want to have a seat at the top table.
What are we waiting for?

I agree with your view that the new CL format was UEFAs answer to any break away Euro League and is a good thing for Celtic.

I go further. FSR to bring about sustainability and so improve the level of competition is a key component in UEFA’s defense which is why I think it will be implemented with due vigour and extra monitoring.

The choice then becomes watching real competition or a Harlem Globetrotters league.

Great entertainment but not the same as watching real competition.

auldheid,

the problem with financial doping is that it is like any other form of doping/cheating … cheats will have found loop holes/ways to avoid regulations before the regulations even come into effect.

I see something like that in my business routinely … if there is enough incentive (usually money) to cheat, then there are always people who will do so, and there will be people who will assist them (in this case, dastardly lawyers and, even worse, unscrupulous accountants!)
