The Nearly Men

Morning,all.

Last night saw one of the game’s great clubs visit our own great club, and what a show was on offer. We started the game like a bullet from a gun, with Kühn going on one of his runs across the edge of the area before firing it low into Neuer’s bottom corner-after only 25 seconds! Sadly, Idah had strayed into the keeper’s line of sight, and it was rightly ruled off.

Even more sadly, that was about as good as it got for us in the first half!

I didn’t check the first half stats, but they would have been heavily in favour of Bayern. They were passing us off the pitch, while all we could do in response was pass the ball off the pitch. Backs to the wall stuff for the entire remaining 44 minutes. And just when it looked like we were gonna go into the break on level terms-we lost focus and lost a goal.

How simple and straightforward it was too, and therefore completely avoidable. A simple enough long ball to the edge of the area on our left. Olise-who only a few years ago was playing for Reading!-picked it up and tried to cut inside Taylor. Instead,it ricocheted back to his right foot and he simply slammed it into the net! Seven bloody seconds before the break anaw!!!

Still,we had another 45 minutes to either endure or come up with an equaliser. Instead, our old failing at corners reared its ugly head again. Who leaves Kane unmarked in the six yard box, ffs? Simple answer to that one is-our defence, that’s who! He certainly didn’t need to be asked twice, just fired it into the net as he has done now for years. I mean, this is basic stuff, Celtic. As is keeping your concentration when you have just lost a goal. Again, we lose them in clutches. Even with the HT break to consolidate.

Quite honestly at that stage I was fearing a doing, considering how the match was going. We couldn’t get our foot on the ball, string a few passes together, create a chance. Bayern were doing it for fun. And clearly having fun too. And then, about ten minutes into the half, a potential lifeline. A lengthy VAR check for a foul by Upemecano on Engels. A stamp on the foot. The referee was called to his monitor-and we know how this usually plays out. Well, usually. Not this time. Referee stuck with his original decision.

In truth, I didn’t see anything to claim for, not until I saw the replay. I think we had a very good case, and can feel bloody hard done by on this one. It did seem to galvanise us into some action though, and not before time. A few minutes later, Taylor was off for Schlupp and Jota came on for Idah-replacing Maeda on the left, who moved into the central role. The Bayern CBs, about four metres tall the pair, must have thought their work was done for the night, just this tiny wee fella to concern us, haha. Well, the joke’s on them.

For starters, Upemecano was way short with a pass back. Daizen doesn’t need much of an opportunity, and he’d been waiting all night for this one. He robbed Neuer and rounded him, but took it well wide in the process. In fairness, he was probably hoping for a rash challenge-I know I was! His effort squirmed along the line to safety.

Next up from the bench was Yang for Kühn, who had persevered without much to show for it. I admit to liking the wee fella, but I don’t think he is at his best on the right. And he’s only 22yo,give the lad a chance! No matter, he poppped up a couple of minutes later as a stramash developed from a corner. His shot was probably sliding past, but Maeda stuck the nut in it and diverted it from close range into the net.

1-2 and game on! The crowd surged back into life, the players surged back into life, and now it was Bayern holding out. What a turnaround, but the job only part done. We needed the equaliser, for sure. We definitely threw everything at it, Bayern being rocked but not rolled, Kane being flattened.

AJ took a belt from the edge of the box. Had it gone in, it would have burst the net on its way to raising the roof! It was not to be, as Neuer parried it away for yet another corner. The ref gave us another seven minutes with which to find it, but the equaliser simply would not arrive. It wasn’t to be our night after all.

I can’t grudge Bayern their victory, given their performance for most of the game was miles better than ours. But I doubt they’d have grudged us that equaliser, given the effort we put in to find it. And to keep the score down at the other end! This was a very very good side we took on, and we acquitted ourselves well. But the scoreline doesn’t lie, and neither do the stats. We simply lost to a very good side.

We can hold our heads high after the whistle was blown, for there were no failures. Every player gave it all they had. In the end, just as we feared, they had more.

Iheanacho, Middlesbrough’s debutante loanee, and by far their highest wage earner, started as striker away at Sheffield United. He was subbed after 73 minutes.
They lost 3-1.

Just watched highlights of Everton – Liverpool. Zero tippy tappy from the back, right from the start. Check it out. Get it into the opponents box, fight for second balls, cause defensive chaos.
Now I’m not saying it would work for us, because we are nowhere near physical enough, but we definitely should try to vary our play and surprise our opponents. Why were we faffing about at the back the last 4 minutes, when we could have had Daezen terrifying Eric Dier chasing long balls?

Just read the lead article. Very well done, as per.
Just maybe we wouldn’t have lost the second if Brendan had put Schlupp on at half time?

Unless Jota is miles off match fitness, I would also have put Maeda through the middle at the start of the second half. He caused terror to Dier as soon as he moved. Idah does not press nearly hard enough.

Brendan always waiting until 60 minutes to make subs, regardless of circumstances on the park, is so ridiculous, it defies belief.

I think BR might have been holding Schlupp back as midfield cover, given that Bernardo was out and McCowan was our sole mid on the bench. I’d have been happy enough with Schlupp on at HT, then moved to mid on the hour. Scales on for Hatate, moves to LB with Schlupp taking CalMac’s role and CalMac moving forward.

—————————
We need better players. Ours tried their best tonight. On one metric alone, we were miles and miles behind them – first touch. I lost count of the number of times Bayern players feinted to touch the ball, but let it go just past them while moving smoothly with it, throwing our players off time after time. Second metric – first time passing, almost like billiard cannon shots off the outside of the foot. Even Kane is adept at it.

I don’t like Kane, personally. I’ve detested him since Griff scored 2 free kicks past Big Joe, and in a post game interview, Kane referred to the Griffalo as ‘the fellow’. Didn’t even know his name, or have the grace to acknowledge his superb strikes. Only focused on himself having ‘the last word’. Arrogant prick.

But I have to say he is a marvelous football player, and when he stops scoring, he will make a superb midfield player, as he has the vision to see and make long crossfield passes that are always accurate.

They are a phenomenal team they really are (as mccoist would say). But when we were a bit braver we proved we can ruffle them. They strolled through that first half cos we had forward passing phobia. We were scared and couldn’t get out our own half,
Once we had to come out after their second, we showed we are capable and what a difference with Maeda through the middle. A real game of two halves and a case of what might have been.

Missed Kyogo badly today. Maybe not so much offensively, as her wouldnt have got any more service than Idah did (which was almost none), but his pressing and defending from the front would have taken some of the pressure off.

on the subject of Idah, was he carrying a knock? Didnt seem himself all game, and then when he was subbed off, I thought he ran straight up the tunnel. Didnt see if he came back afterwards

I like what little I have seen of Schlupp so far. Has a bit of a presence. He should be starting at LB, but someone suggested him as a holding midfielder. Not a bad idea, but cant see BR doing it.

I dont usually do JOBO’s MOTM as I dont always see league games at the time … but I would go with Maeda, and Schmeichel, and … need to think who would be 3.

I like AJ, and not just because he is a fellow Canuck. Adds attitude, which has been lacking since Scott Brown departed. But like SB, his positioning can be suspect. Like GT on the other side, he tends to drift inwards. Since both fullbacks do it, perhaps this is something BR encourages. But I like FB’s to defend and be in the FB spot. Once their own job is done, then they can overlap, and/or play as an auxiliary mid and/or an auxiliary CB. Although, I dont seem to recall AJ’s positioning costing goals as often as it happens on the left side.

If anyone can explain how Taylor was at fault for Kane’s goal I’m all ears. Taylor was in the centre of the goalmouth marking the wee-est Bayern player, obviously picking up the man he was meant to be on! For the first goal, I’d say the team turned off, collectively, up until that point and afterwards we were tighter all over the park with no players left in a one on one situation. The first time it happened, at the free kick on the right, we switched off.
Taylor played the ball 4 or 5 times down the line to Maeda putting it out of play. The full back was rapid and matched Maeda more than once for pace and gad him pushed as far as possible onto the touchline, excellent defensive strategy which made it very difficult for Meada to receive the ball into feet. In the second half it happened right in front of our dugout, i didnt see any sign of Brendan getting too upset when the ba didn’t make it to Maeda. Both Taylor and Maeda were obviously instructed to play that way and keep playing that way. It’s also funny that Reo and Engels got stick on here, too. Reo got 2 votes out of 3 from our posse, and Arne got 3 out of 3 along with Maeda. AJ picking up the loose vote.
And another thing, a few calls on here yesterday morning looking for a ‘YES!’ moment, something to keep us interested in the 90 and hopefully keep the tie alive. Well, 26 seconds in we got it, unlucky to have it struck off but it was a wonderful strike by Kuhn. When Daezen scored we really tried to take the game to them, and had them worried. I thought Celtic were immense in parts tonight, a proper performance, apart from a few mistakes. We looked for progress this season and we’ve got it but it’s never enough for some people!
It’s a funny ol’ game, Saint!!

I agree that GT seemed to be marking Guerrero, but then who was to be manmarking Kane? I was trying to figure out who, if anyone, was manmarking Kane, but didnt catch that when i was watching. Or if not man marking, then someone surely has to be filling the spot by the post which was vacated by GT? If not, then that is a coaching error.

I did notice AJ was often on the left or centre when defending corners, and he did get beat for the header that Kane missed. But I agree he doesnt seem to get the stick that GT gets.

And just because someone scores, doesnt necessarily mean someone else screwed jump. Sometimes it is a good play by the opponents, and no one’s fault.

But we cant simply ignore the fact that so many chances and goals come down GT’s side. And both of the goals tonight were scored from the LB spot. Nor can we ignore the fact that the defence looked more solid after GT was subbed off.

February 13, 2025 5:24 am

Morning Mike! I dunno what you mean by “seemed to be marking”! He absolutely was marking Guerreiro in the centre of the 6 yard boxat the corner. “Seemed to be” suggests you’re still thinking he’s out of position when it’s clear he’s been told to pick up Guerreiro at corners. Someone is being lazy when that corner is taken but it wasn’t Taylor, I had a wee look at it when I came in last night and have no idea who’s meant to be picking up Kane but it’s criminal the space he had with no one aware of where he was.
For the first goal, Bayern got a free kick on our right. We slept as it was taken, our marking was rotten and we didn’t hold the shape we’d been doing well until then. I’d commented at the time how fluid we were in reshaping constantly depending on how the game was playing out – we started with 433 and had moved to a 343, a 4231 and a 442 – all moving together, all covering each other, until that free kick. At the time, I said to the wee guy, I’d need to see that again as I couldn’t understand how GT had been isolated so easily. My only explanation is we (collectively) switched off! I’m happy to be proved otherwise but for me too many people simply look for Taylor’s errors and are immediately happy to point the finger at him.

Morning all.

Bayern are the best team we have played this Season. First half their movement was fabulous. They really do have terrific players and it’s the first time ever, I have seen a fullback, Might be Leimers ( Spelling !!! ) match Maeda for speed 👋👋👋

Second half we were a lot better and it gives us a smidger’s chance next week .

Anyway the all important 3 for Jobo:

Engels ( Our party of 10 all agreed )
Maeda
McGregor

Trusty was in contention but Cal just nudged it 👍

Morning all
2-1 loss to a team such as Bayern not a bad result on the face of it, and given we didn’t really get the rub of the green last night with the disallowed goal and the penalty decision, it could’ve been on another night with a different ref we might have scraped a draw.
I feared pre match that we might get thumped, thinking our midfield would get overrun. I actually thought Engels, McGregor and Hatate fought well last night .
The problem was that quite simply , Olise, Kimmich, Musiala, Sane and Goretzka were a level above.
Our weakest players for me were Taylor, Idah and Kuhn but I didn’t think any of them were awful. Idah had very little to work with, similarly Kuhn, and I thought Greg was a little unlucky for the first goal.
On Harry Kane’s goal, yes it landed in the area of the left back but Taylor was clearly marking someone in the middle of the goal. No idea who was supposed to be picking up Kane but it was a bad error on our part and a costly one to boot.
On Schlupp, perhaps just me but I’m not seeing it from him in a defensive capacity. He looks like a player who enjoys getting forward a lot more than defending. He was actually ok in that capacity but to me he’s not going to improve us defensively.
For 65 minutes it was like watching Celtic v a Dundee or Ross C whereby we can’t get the ball and are chasing hard. Credit to our players’ fitness that we were able to start to get a foothold for the last 25 mins , and indeed you could sense a little bit of panic in the opposition.
I started to think we’re gonna grab an equaliser but sadly not to be.
Against Bremen last week Bayern had 74% possession. In the first half last night we had 35%, and upped that in the second to 51%. We’d 216 passes in the first half but 271 in the second half, so the indications are we adapted better and got stronger as the game progressed.
Overall I was reasonably happy that up until the last kick we were in there pitching for a draw.
We’re 3-4 players short of being able to go up another level and hopefully over the summer we will take steps to strengthen. Obviously KT returning will see us create chances from wide left though I’ve never seen him as a particularly solid defender.
To end on a positive, I thought AJ was excellent last night, Engels shows some sublime little touches and great passes, and Maeda is a machine and has the highest work rate of any player I’ve ever seen in a Celtic jersey. McGregor continues to add to the legacy he’ll leave as one of our greatest ever players and captains.
Next week will be a bridge too far,  however we go there with expectation low and can hopefully enjoy the experience. Have a go and see what unfolds.
Been a decent campaign overall .

Tell you what I noticed last night that surprised me. For seasons now when watching the matches, I get infuriated with the messing around at the back. Keeper to centre back, back to keeper, out to the full back, back into the centre back invariably has me in panic mode. “ FFS get it up the park, we’re gonna lose a goal etc”
Last night v top opposition I thought we played it out of defence quite comfortably. We seem to be getting much better at it. Not sure if it’s the added confidence Kasper has brought to the defence but we’ve definitely got a lot better at it! I was thinking about it last night post match. Had we adopted my previously preferred approach of boot it up the park, I suspect our possession % would have dropped dramatically as well as putting us under pressure as it came straight back at us.
Obviously there’s still occasions whereby you’ll have no choice but to launch it, but it’s an aspect of the game that I feel we’re definitely improving in.

Morning

Excellent contribution from Twisty and a lead article I can find nothing to disagree with.

Sometimes you just have to acknowledge you were playing a better team with better players. Does not mean we were bad and had a team of bad players. As with the Villa game I thought that at times we look a pretty decent team with good players but as with that earlier game we overall look a notch and a half below the class we would want to be. Hopefully next week is not a heavy defeat.

As for the next European campaign it may actually be that not having any really outstanding players other clubs want to sign for big money at the moment Rodgers may be working with a squad that now knows the course and so we’ll acquit ourselves a bit better next time. Tierney, should he stay fit and ready for tricky qualifiers. knows what is needed so is the kind of player we require to at least maintain this season’s improvements and hopefully at least two other experienced players come in as well. I understand our strategy of buying to sell for a profit but would prefer it if in the next window we sign players whose obvious value to Celtic can be seen on the park and not a couple of years down the line in the bank account. Getting into the top 16 next year would be good and realistically as high as we can reach this cycle.

Have a good day and as I walked through dog shit walking to the bus stop in the dark mine can probably only get better

Hate to say it, let alone admit it, but our Manager is a minnow at this level.

Our starting 11 was wrong. He eventually got it correct, but we had shipped two soft goals by then.

For me Schlupp and Scales are better defenders than Trusty and GT. Jota a better option on the wing than anyone a d Maeda in the middle, in a game you need to win, is better than Idah . So for me we started weaker than we ended the group stages by leaving our two January signings in the bench.

BR has no choice now, he needs to go for broke in Munich. But last night was the night to do so.

As I say, he’s great in our wee diddy league ( mostly), but if we want to progress in Europe, we need a better manager.

Kane was being man-marked at set-plays in first half – effectively!

Not sure why he was left unattended for 2nd goal, but it was diabolical defending at any level

(Someone left their skates in dressing room at HT?)

Our defence is not good enough to play against any team that press and keep ball. None of them are up to it.

Mainly because our midfield lacks ability to cover the inevitable transitions.

no names no pack-drill

Having said that – we are still in this.

Agree with San Luis.

When it comes to games against the Euro elite, Brendan Rodgers is the weakest link.

Respect for the opposition turns into fear of the opposition. If our players want to show that they can compete with the likes of Bayern Munich, even if they are technically inferior, they need to be instilled with confidence, focus, and desire. That comes primarily from the manager.

Two minutes of the seven added remaining, and we are still passing side ways and back in our own half. Should have been launching it and hoping to win the second ball, a bit of chaos football in an effort to get level.

But that is not the Rodgers way, calm, controlled, and methodical, right to the bitter end.

AJ, who otherwise played well, was defending the area Kane scored from in the first half.
For some inexplicable reason he is standing marking no one in the middle of the six yard box as the ball sails over his head.

A glass ceiling reached.
New bodies needed obviously, but just as importantly losing a key performer like Daizen, and which teams looking in last night wouldn’t want him, would have a significant negative impact and be impossible to replace.

Big Audio Dynamite

Twisty,

We have a top-tier manager who’s able to achieve this with players worth (Mostly) just a few million each, while we are regularly up against players worth 10s of millions ..imagine what he can achieve when he has players worth a little bit more.

I said pre-game that I would have played Daizen through the middle because of his pace, and the fact that Bayern play a brave high line. When you have a guy who literally scores every time he wears no9, you play that man at no9 no matter how much others might have cost! I think he went with Adam due his physicality, whereas I’d have went with pace to get behind their high line.

The game went pretty much how I expected it to go. Bayern are slick, and their first half display was as good as anything I’ve seen from anyone. We only really entered the game as a threat, almost the minute we switched Daizen inside.

I’m desperate for our manager to commit his future to us so that we can plan to build for a future as a regular CL participant. Once we are able to replace players who are clearly not good enough for this level of competition, I firmly believe that Brendan will not just get us to the party, he will also have us up dancing! 😁

Win the treble and give a good account of ourselves V Bayern, and as far as I’m concerned it will have been a very memorable season!

No1 priority is getting Brendan’s contract situation sorted!!

Brendan came back in June 23. Since then we have played 8 CL games at Celtic Park. Last night was only our 2nd defeat in those 8. The other a 2-1 defeat to Lazio where we were basically robbed . Surely that is progress. Teams now are wary of playing us at home where we were a laughing stock prior to this. Our away tactics in Europe is what we must improve on and that has been the case for over a decade. Yes we have had our worst beatings away under his watch but also a few surprise ones too Atalanta this season an example. Hes not the greatest manager around but he definitely is our best for many a year.

Big Audio Dynamite

Just sayin’

Another 2 or 3 upgrades (Taylor, Scales etc) and we can meet these teams head on without any fear.

Most important thing for me is getting the manager to commit his long-term future to us.

With him almost guaranteeing domestic success while generating piles of cash for the club, progress to being a regular participant at the top table of Europe should be where our ambitions are.

I’m absolutely stunned that some think it would be a good idea to replace him! Get that appointment wrong and you may be back to losing trophies to that basket case over the river. The Huns would be absolutely delighted if we were to replace Brendan!!

Be careful what you wish for!!!

I’d hate to think where we would be without Brendan.

We are achieving incremental progress and it could be said are ahead of schedule getting into the play off positions.

Next challenge is preparation for the qualifying rounds. Two tough but winnable rounds, assuming we are suitably reinforced.

If we had finished higher than 21st we could have had a kinder draw.
The target for next season is firstly qualify and aim for top 16.

BR is the man for me to meet that next challenge.

St Tams,

Gerrard’s team winning an unbeaten league title should be all the proof you need about what happens when we get managerial appointments wrong!

Insanity!!

I fail to see , how Maeda being pushed onto the touchline is an excuse for Taylor to play the ball out of park 3 tines in the first half.
At least he improved in the second only did it once .

JS,

Well said!

He loses on average about 1 game in every 10 against our closest league challenger.

His record in the cups is absolutely jaw-dropping.

He almost Guarantees a treble EVERY year FFS!

We are competing at the top table again because of him.

He generates record profits that allows us to take the next step in the players markets.

You can see he is building something really special here again.

He improves players to the point their worth will become much greater to the club.

Replace him? Like I say,, INSANITY!

Given our resources, I’d expect John Kennedy to win the league. It might not be pretty, it might be close, but he certainly wouldn’t lose it when spending £30-40 m on players each season. The end results, financially, would be the same. Full houses and Champions League entry, all but guaranteed.

However, I’d expect JK to fail in Europe as he’s probably out of his depth. Similarly, I think BR struggles with the finer nuances of the elite game and it shows up regularly. Dortmund, Atletico, Brugge and Zagreb.

His failing isn’t really last night, although I mentioned a couple, it’s not taking 4 or 6 points from Brugge and Zagreb that hurt us the most and , hence, we ended up playing Bayern.

We are far too cautious at home and extremely naive away.

That said, He needs to go for it in Munich, but will he? I hope so

St Tam’s…Maeda pushed as wide as possible and closely marked, Taylor also being closed down and under pressure to find him with 40 yard passes as that was his only option, in a high pressure game…that was what I saw. After the first couple had gone out I said to the wee guy Taylor should be putting them over the top and behind the fullback but he never resorted to that style. That’s why I think Taylor was following instructions.
