Score Early, Score Often

Morning,all.

After all the midweek excitement as we battled Bayern, it is back to the nitty-gritty of the league campaign today. That almost makes it sound like a distraction, but nothing could be further from the truth-winning the title is our No 1 Priority this season, as it has been in every season since Adam were a lad.

The reasons for this are obvious. Winning the title assures us of our best crack at The Champions League, which next season will see us enduring “only” one qualifying round. Win it, and we are once again in with the big boys, in with the big bucks which supplies the income for investment in players. It also gives us another four home games to the backdrop of the rousing Zadok The Priest, a harmless little ditty which drives our hun friends mental when they hear it as our ringtone!

But that is for another day. Today is all about the visit of Dundee United. When we last played them at the beginning of January, they were on a bit of a roll. Since then, they have one win in five. Our last game against them was fairly comfortable, the gulf in class showing that day as we ran out very straightforward winners.

However, only two weeks before that they held us to a 0-0 draw. None of us who watched that will want to see a repeat-indeed, none of us could bear to watch a repeat. It was a bloody awful match, the kind that makes you want to take up knitting instead. For that reason, they aren’t to be taken lightly.

BR doesn’t tend to take any opposition lightly, and even with the second leg of our CL tie against Bayern on Tuesday, I expect to see a full-strength side named. Our full-strength, of course, still offers some variation. Will Maeda play through the middle, or will that role be entrusted to Idah? Will Maeda start at all, given that Jota still needs game time? Or Yang for Kühn? Will Scales start at centre-back, and if so, which of the two incumbents will be rested? Is it Taylor or Sclupp at left back? Will McCowan get the nod at the start, allowing the boss to rest Engels or Hatate? What about Ralston?

Although that looks as though we have a capable and adaptable squad, and there’s no doubt that every other manager in the country would give their eye teeth for such selection dramas, there is little doubt that we are significantly short in midfield. We went into the season with five players, and while we had up till now been very fortunate with injuries, our luck had to end some time. And it has, with Bernardo being ruled out for around six weeks. So, down to four then. And that is something which should definitely concern us.

I’ve been rooting around our B team and youths for possible replacements, and I’m afraid there doesn’t appear to be one who looks remotely capable of stepping up. We will just have to hope that future injuries in that department are avoided, for we have no other option. This obviously needs to be addressed in the summer, and I’d expect us to be looking at one or other of the midfield regulars for other Scottish clubs.

While that probably brings us back to the hardy perennial of Lennon Miller, there are other options available. Including a former colleague of McCowan at Dundee. It would be harsh on Tony Docherty for us to take another of his players, especially given that a third has agreed to join up next season at Ibrox, but that’s the harsh reality of football nowadays. Hand out short-term contracts and they can come back to bite you in the rear end! Either way, whether we concentrate on finding a suitable signing in Scotland or elsewhere, we cannot go into next season so short in such a vital area of the pitch.

But back to today. In form opponents or not, we should be looking at three points from this one. That’s not to say it is a gimme, for I fully expect it to be a hard-fought ninety minutes. I’m looking forward to watching it, that’s for sure. Two things I want today then-three points and no further injuries. It’s hard to say which is more important.

Have not read the legal ruling but
does that mean UEFA FSR is not lawful since the EPL case followed FSR sustainable principles?
So Man City keep their titles on a legal technicality, so what?
.We know how football uses the front of legality to avoid football justice .
Does this mean no one in a UEFA qualifying position can have a UEFA licence applicatio processed as no lawful rules to apply?
Consequences consequences.
I posted a link earlier to a Guardian article on the EPL sustainability ruling being on trial basis until end of season with hints it will be revisited before applying next season to take into account the reasons from PFA objections to their wage demands being brought under affordability rules.
It’s a dangerous road for football if anyone with deep pockets wants to fund a version of the Harlem Globetrotters.
That is what is at stake here not thar Man City won on a legal technicalty to keep titles won from money competitors did not have access to.
A legal win at the expense of sporting integrity is not a win for football as a sport.
From a Celtic perspective would we as supporters not want to see a curb on players wages across Europe to improve the quality of players we could sign as result of market deflation?
How many football fans outside Manchester City will accept City won titles fair and square on a legal technicality.
Not many have accepted the legal ruling of LNS in Scotland that ignored the principle on which points deduction is now a valid sanction.
Is that principle under threat?

echos my concerns.

https://onefootball.com/en/news/report-man-citys-court-win-shakes-up-premier-league-40139714

Given the ruling applies to treating sponsorship deals as legitimate football earnings will UEFA accept or fall back on the specificity of sport argument that the EC recognise to allow football to avoid some EC commercial laws?

I don’t see English or continental clubs with no access to cheap non football earnings (like Celtic) not fighting back in court.

A compromise is likely to be found.

Sabotage – that’s the word

sell main striker and don’t replace, days before CL fixtures v Bundesliga leaders.

Choose to ‘operate’ only 5 midfielders in a squad that probably requires two midfield changes at 60 & 75 mins for basic domestic games – no contingency for suspensions or the strong possibility one of them might be wandering about for weeks in a moon boot…

remember we ‘lost’ or contrived to ‘lose’ two very capable ‘keepers, our right back, a centre half and a back up left back that scored an important goal against the Sevvies at Ibrox in the last Glasgow Derby before the Summer as we ‘prepared’ for 10 in a row.

Sabotage

Sabotage suggests deliberately damaging our prospects. Can’t see our manager, who would be at the centre of the decision making process, going along with that and damaging his own profile into the bargain.

A Narcissist wouldn’t/ couldn’t countenance that.
Nah, don’t see it – it’s more like complacency and negligence to me by the mild mannered accountant.

hope you don’t mind if I disagree…there is a track record of strange/odd decisions when it comes to signing players at key times…basically failing to replace or trade up.

Manager is clearly over a barrel on this…having his main striker sold and declaring he wanted him replaced …also, only 5 midfielders he feels he can rely on is probably a bigger issue.

nah! he is choosing to stay stchum…

all opinions of course…everyone has a Right to reply on here …they won’t… but I’m fairly sure they will have others do that for them ( not a dig at you personally btw)

No offence taken. Disagree away.

The midfield issue became live when we realised Holm was never going to be in the mix and Turley had a sniff of action never to be seen again.
A bigger cause for concern to me than the curious case of the missing striker.

Although both hint strongly at a process that secures sales significantly better than purchases.

I just think we generally work on the principles of top dollar on the way out and bottom dollar on the way in.

What I seen with regards to Kyoho and Jota were 2 players unsatisfied and unhappy with their situations at their clubs. Both clubs seen what was a possible solution concerning the players. Swap them and on paper we can show similar values for the transfers. Everyone agrees and is happy with the situation.
Might be Im talking pish but does anyone believe it was to help Kyogo get a game in the Japan team. As for Jota he is delighted to return where he was an icon .
Nothing sinister – no sabotage .IMHO just making two decent players happy and relieving headaches for the managers involved at the time. Unfortunately Rennes sacked their manager days later.

SES,
I was reading Bobby’s line “winning the title assures us of our best crack at the Champions League”
The first thing going through mind was, aye it does, as long as we manage to keep the squad we have and add a few quality players.
Unfortunately as we know, and have been there many times before, Celtic never make it that straightforward.
Winning the league should be a formality this season. Its when we sell Maeda and Kühn to the best of the best low ball offers and wait till the last days of transfer window scrambling for a cheap replacement, tends to make our best crack at CL qualification much less than a formality.
Will we ever learn?

Two Dundee football just yards apart both struggling to survive.

Two players – One jersey.

Travel through to Lochgelly in Fife, go through the town centre, through the brown shades of winter, through this old mining community that’s hardly changed in 70 years. We stopped for an old guy who was looking rather wobbly, he said ” just been down the road sharing a dram with my misses, she lies at peace 200 yards down the road, thanks for stopping”. So we drove on for a few seconds and turned left into Lochgelly cemetery. Chic Geatons headstone looked a bit like the auld fella, a bit wobbly, leaning forward, you couldn’t help but feel a bit sad at the state of it.
Chic Geatons was a lifelong Celtic man, a dependable, consistent, talented player who signed for Celtic from Lochgelly Celtic in October 1927. Willie Maley predicted that he would become a top class defender and he was seldom wrong. He was playing on that dreadful day when Johnny Thomson received his fatal injury, Chic Geatons took over the goalkeeping role and despite fierce pressure from the Rain-gers kept a clean sheet. He like the rest of the Celtic players and staff, must have been traumatised. After finishing playing for the Hoops he turned to the licenced trade before coming back to Celtic as a coach, but disgusted by board interference resigned.
Little is known about the rest of his life, like many at that time he passed away far too early but lies at rest with his beloved wife.
Chic Geatons Celtic through and through.

Auldheid, I’m sorry, but this was always going to be the ruling. Markets dictate, you are only worth what someone is willing to pay.

If you think smaller entities would have some sort of legal case, again, sorry but this won’t stand in any court.

The next step would be that certain leagues would be asking about TV deals, and this won’t happen. It’s market driven.

When you say Harlem globetrotter, do you mean Real Madrid? Because that’s exactly what they are. Hoovering up the greatest talent on the planet and not a mention of FSR.

A turnover of €1 billion for a club in substantial debt, yet can still pay players over €500k per week.

Real will never, I repeat, never be refused a CL license, no matter what they do.

Uefa need these clubs in their competitions and the reason for the CL shake up was nothing to do the the format going stale, it was always about the ESL. Plain and simple.

The Saudis will sponsor St James Park and this will be their way of getting round their very own FFP.

I believe the rules are great in theory, and set out for the right reasons, but manageable, now that’s only for the smaller entities and not for the great whites that swim in the same waters as us minnows.

Turn left out of Lochgelly cemetery onto the B981 along the Auchterderran Road travel for a couple of minutes, its only 1.7 miles and you arrive at Bowhill cemetery, a very short journey in terms of burial sites but in terms of remembering a huge contrast. No-one needs telling of the person buried along with his sister lies the remains of John Thomson, his headstone is large and in pristine condition with many a Celtic tribute.
For here resting in peace is the first to wear the goalkeeping jersey on that fateful day, he gave up his life with astonishing bravery to keep goal for Celtic, one of the few who would become a Celtic legend. For me, I picked up three immaculate white pebbles just like I had done as a five year old travelling through to ‘Lino Toon’ with ‘Auld Jimmy’ and Faither, no, not Ronny Simpson the real Da.
We keep these players close to our hearts and will always remember them.
John Thomson, the man who was the keeper of the Celtic goals.

You may well be right.

As long as supporters don’t gaf about fair play it will never be acheived. That won’t stop the moans.

It will be football but not as we knew it.

However I don’t see UEFA member clubs meekly saying nothing although that depends on their support and that begins at home.

The specificity of sport angle recognised in EU law allows for exemptions to EU law on a case by case basis so could form a basis for challenge.

As the article I linked to says this decision is going to cause a reaction from clubs not with access to unlimited funds so we’ll see how it all unfolds.

The problem with football being governed by the law as opposed to football law that recognises the specificity of sport argument is football can no longer be called a sport and if supporters dont care then what is the point of rules that aim to bring a degree of fairness?

Why have FIFA who set the rules to that makes football a sport?
Who owns those rules?

If so what has gone wrong and why does he seem to be accepting it.

Pitymevin and others.

I mention the specificity of sport argument and Googled it.

I was able to copy this.

The specificity of sport in EU law refers to the unique characteristics of sport that distinguish it from other economic and social activities. The EU takes these characteristics into account when applying EU law to sport.

However Google allows a deeper dive but the articles into why the EU accepts the specificity argument are on pdf documents I could not link to or copy via my phone but they can be read via Google.

The argument might be the UK is not covered by EU law but the majority of clubs applying for a UEFA licence are and UEFA might say since all clubs seeking a UEFA licence have to play by same rules then UK clubs must adhere to FSR in order to play in UEFA competition.

So the legal show isn’t over imo

Pitymevin
February 15, 2025 12:03 pm

Auldheid, I don’t think supporters not GAF about FFP is the issue.

Until governments are allowed to apply pressure to how clubs need to have, like the German set up a 51% rule, then the supporters don’t really have a say.

And if I’m not mistaken, UEFA and Fifa don’t allow government intervention. Otherwise your national league and international teams can be banned from all competitions.

Both Fifa and UEFA are as guilty as anyone in ensuring the status quo.

Saudi world cup. And a quick visit to Chop,Chop Square on everyone’s tour list.

ISRAEL still not banned from either Fifa or UEFA. They also don’t fall under EC laws and come to think of it, there must be a dozen countries that don’t.

Great in principle, extremely hard to govern

Nothing will change, we’ll thats just my thoughts anyway.

===
What exactly has gone wrong?

The assumption is a club who many think is only there to make profit will not spend to make a bigger profit.

There is a limit to what can be spent so progress has to be incremental and from that perspective Celtic under BR who believes in his ability to improve players and so their value are improving.
Fear of the past repeating itself will always be there until the next window and with a good cash reserve to help retain or attract players that was not there in PLs years offer the opportunity for further incremental improvement.

Auldbhoy offered a sensible reason to explain the Kyogo Jota transfers and who can argue Celtic are missing Kyogo as a source of goals but that reality is ignored.

Which takes me back to my question what exactly gone wrong to date?

It is the involvement of the UK govt to introduce a Regulator based on Tracy Crouch recommendations that got the EPL to introduce the rules that saw Man City charged.

In Scotland the SFSA have pushed for Holyrood involvement resulting in round table meetings involving the govt, SFA, SPFL and supporters so the idea the Govt cannot get involved is not true.
The fact that that those governing the game were found to be corrupt has allowed Govt to get involved.

As regards supporters their unused power is simply to stop attending until their complaint gets attention so supporters are not without power.
In England it was supporters who got behind Tracey Crouch that caused Govt involvement and the SFSA used that fact to get Hollyrood involved.

At the end of the day it is the belief that nothing will change that prevents change.

Yet nothing remains the same over the passage of time.

A bit more about the specificity of sport that Ive been aware of since before 2007 having read a report by Ivo Belet a Belgian politician on the future of professional football in Europe ( a bit like the later Tracey Crouch report).

The specificity of sport in EU law refers to the unique characteristics of sport that distinguish it from other economic and social activities. The EU takes these characteristics into account when applying EU law to sport.

How does the EU recognize the specificity of sport?

The European Council’s Declaration on the specific characteristics of sportThe 2007 White Paper on SportArticle 165 of the Treaty of the European Union**What does the specificity of sport mean in practice?

The EU applies EU law to sport in a case-by-case basis The EU treats sports federations with particular care The EU considers the social, educational, and cultural functions of sport The EU considers the interdependence between sporting activity and the economic activity it generates Examples of the specificity of sport in EU law:

The principle of equal opportunitiesThe need to ensure uncertainty concerning outcomesThe principle of a single federation per sportThe need to preserve a competitive balance between clubsThe EU also has a sport satellite account system that identifies and accounts for sport-related economic activities.

To me it grants football the opportunity to divert from national law in certain circumstances covered in the above especially

The EU considers the interdependence between sporting activity and the economic activity it generates

I’ve just been reading back and I’ve just remembered an odd comment BR made in midweek pre match. Responding to a question about the strength of the squad going up against Bayern he said ” the Board have given me great backing”. I was absolutely staggered at this. Isn’t it the case that we’ve made a profit in every window since he returned? Isn’t that tantamount to having spent nothing??
If we’re strengthening the squad then we’re doing it in painstakingly slow motion.

I wonder who’ll have to be sold before we bring in a Kvistgaarden or similar?

Good to see the squad getting utilised today. Though I am scratching my head with something Brendan said midweek.

When discussing Bernardo’s absence through injury, Brendan said we had depth in squad for that position.

Where is the evidence?

Of 9 available spots on the bench today (and on Wed) we have only one midfield player.

Why have 4 defenders (including 2 CH’s?) on the bench today when we could have a second midfielder?

I know Holm and Kwon are out on loan. Are known of our B squad/academy players worthy of a spot on our bench (eg Turley)?

Worrying if that’s the case…also contradicts BR’s own comments…

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers admits he will approach Jota’s return to full fitness with caution as the attacker starts this afternoon.
“He has not played a great deal of football,” he said of the Portuguese winger.
“But you see his quality and class, we have to be careful with him. He is getting better each day in training and he’s getting game time. And he starts today, which is great.”
On keeping up intensity following midweek match, Rodgers added:”We have played big games, Champions League games, and came out with the very next game with the same intent and same mentality to win the game. It’ll be exactly the same again.”
And, on conceding in just one league game at Celtic Park this season, Rodgers commented: “It is mentality. The importance of every game here is not lost on the players. My job is to make sure everyone is aware of that. It tells you everything about the mentality of the team.”
