Score Early, Score Often

Morning,all.

After all the midweek excitement as we battled Bayern, it is back to the nitty-gritty of the league campaign today. That almost makes it sound like a distraction, but nothing could be further from the truth-winning the title is our No 1 Priority this season, as it has been in every season since Adam were a lad.

The reasons for this are obvious. Winning the title assures us of our best crack at The Champions League, which next season will see us enduring “only” one qualifying round. Win it, and we are once again in with the big boys, in with the big bucks which supplies the income for investment in players. It also gives us another four home games to the backdrop of the rousing Zadok The Priest, a harmless little ditty which drives our hun friends mental when they hear it as our ringtone!

But that is for another day. Today is all about the visit of Dundee United. When we last played them at the beginning of January, they were on a bit of a roll. Since then, they have one win in five. Our last game against them was fairly comfortable, the gulf in class showing that day as we ran out very straightforward winners.

However, only two weeks before that they held us to a 0-0 draw. None of us who watched that will want to see a repeat-indeed, none of us could bear to watch a repeat. It was a bloody awful match, the kind that makes you want to take up knitting instead. For that reason, they aren’t to be taken lightly.

BR doesn’t tend to take any opposition lightly, and even with the second leg of our CL tie against Bayern on Tuesday, I expect to see a full-strength side named. Our full-strength, of course, still offers some variation. Will Maeda play through the middle, or will that role be entrusted to Idah? Will Maeda start at all, given that Jota still needs game time? Or Yang for Kühn? Will Scales start at centre-back, and if so, which of the two incumbents will be rested? Is it Taylor or Sclupp at left back? Will McCowan get the nod at the start, allowing the boss to rest Engels or Hatate? What about Ralston?

Although that looks as though we have a capable and adaptable squad, and there’s no doubt that every other manager in the country would give their eye teeth for such selection dramas, there is little doubt that we are significantly short in midfield. We went into the season with five players, and while we had up till now been very fortunate with injuries, our luck had to end some time. And it has, with Bernardo being ruled out for around six weeks. So, down to four then. And that is something which should definitely concern us.

I’ve been rooting around our B team and youths for possible replacements, and I’m afraid there doesn’t appear to be one who looks remotely capable of stepping up. We will just have to hope that future injuries in that department are avoided, for we have no other option. This obviously needs to be addressed in the summer, and I’d expect us to be looking at one or other of the midfield regulars for other Scottish clubs.

While that probably brings us back to the hardy perennial of Lennon Miller, there are other options available. Including a former colleague of McCowan at Dundee. It would be harsh on Tony Docherty for us to take another of his players, especially given that a third has agreed to join up next season at Ibrox, but that’s the harsh reality of football nowadays. Hand out short-term contracts and they can come back to bite you in the rear end! Either way, whether we concentrate on finding a suitable signing in Scotland or elsewhere, we cannot go into next season so short in such a vital area of the pitch.

But back to today. In form opponents or not, we should be looking at three points from this one. That’s not to say it is a gimme, for I fully expect it to be a hard-fought ninety minutes. I’m looking forward to watching it, that’s for sure. Two things I want today then-three points and no further injuries. It’s hard to say which is more important.

I hope BR doesn’t interpret it as anything other than hero worship. You know how much of a pedestal Celtic employees interpret everything these days

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #41 CELTIC 3 DUNDEE UNITED 0 (McGREGOR, JOTA, IDAH)*

Good evening, friends.
A very comfortable, never in doubt home league game against an opposition who never really threatened our goal at all. Their sole take away from this game was winning the toss and forcing Celtic to play the wrong way round!
A game where pretty much every player did well enough and where many of the fans’ thoughts were already drifting to Munich. 3 very good goals were the main highlights, supplemented by Schlupp’s piledriver off the post. And we ended our weekend by extending our lead at the top by 1 goal! We are 13 points clear with just 12 games left. Man of the Match will be revealed shortly, but the worst performer on the pitch was never in doubt, our referee Nick Walsh.
We have now played 41 games this season, winning 30, drawing 7 and losing 4. We have scored 114 and conceded 35 (domestically it’s 100-19 and in Europe it’s 14-16).
Thank you so much to the 72 who voted this time around. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Schmeichel: 0
Ralston: 10
Carter-Vickers: 3
Trusty: 1
Schlupp: 45
McGregor*: 64
McCowan*: 13
Hatate: 2
Yang: 1
Idah: 12
Jota*: 65
Maeda: 0
Engels: 0
Taylor: 0
Kuhn: 0
Kenny: 0

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Dundee United –
Jota – 5 points
McGregor – 4 points
Schlupp – 3 points
McCowan – 2 points
Idah – 1 point

And the overall positions after 41 games played are –
64 points – Maeda
58 points – Kuhn
51 points – Engels
48 points – Hatate, McGregor
47 points – Schmeichel
41 points – Bernardo, Scales
32 points – Trusty
29 points – McCowan
26 points – Johnston A
24 points – Kyogo
23 points – Carter-Vickers
21 points – Taylor
19 points – Valle
15 points – Idah
11 points – Jota
7 points – O’Riley, Yang
4 points – Forrest
3 points – Schlupp, Welsh
2 points – Murray
0 points – Cummings, Holm, Johnston M., Kenny, Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley

In just under 47 hours it’ll be kick off in Germany as Celtic try to overturn the 1-2 deficit from the first leg against Bayern Munich. Kick off is 8.00pm.

And a wee incentive for anyone who reads this far. So far this season I’ve received 2,996 emails with your nominations. Be quick after Tuesday’s game and it could be the ”3000 Podium” for you!
Hail Hail!

I have think I have been clear on that for a while. How could I support an organization that supported bigotry against my kind? Celtic conspired to keep Sevco alive, which means keeping anti-Catholic bigotry, alive because they believed it was good for their business. I hope that the club will somehow find its way back to the light, but until it at least comes clean, I wont give it a penny, and cant really be a supporter. Been pretty up front about that for a decade now

Having said that, I dont obviously dont want to see the blue bigot club win, so in some respects, I would rather Celtic win because they are the only alternative to the zombies winning…but again, I dont think that would qualify me as a supporter … more of an interested observer.

Good to see Tony Ralston picking up a few votes, in the player of the year competition.

Excellent performance, Saturday.

I’ve watched the Adam Idah strike a few dozen times now – astonishing goal.

Eagerly anticipating Tuesday night’s game in München, against one of THE greatest clubs on earth.

Remember, however that Celtic are also KINGS! 👑
