Score Early, Score Often

Morning,all.

After all the midweek excitement as we battled Bayern, it is back to the nitty-gritty of the league campaign today. That almost makes it sound like a distraction, but nothing could be further from the truth-winning the title is our No 1 Priority this season, as it has been in every season since Adam were a lad.

The reasons for this are obvious. Winning the title assures us of our best crack at The Champions League, which next season will see us enduring “only” one qualifying round. Win it, and we are once again in with the big boys, in with the big bucks which supplies the income for investment in players. It also gives us another four home games to the backdrop of the rousing Zadok The Priest, a harmless little ditty which drives our hun friends mental when they hear it as our ringtone!

But that is for another day. Today is all about the visit of Dundee United. When we last played them at the beginning of January, they were on a bit of a roll. Since then, they have one win in five. Our last game against them was fairly comfortable, the gulf in class showing that day as we ran out very straightforward winners.

However, only two weeks before that they held us to a 0-0 draw. None of us who watched that will want to see a repeat-indeed, none of us could bear to watch a repeat. It was a bloody awful match, the kind that makes you want to take up knitting instead. For that reason, they aren’t to be taken lightly.

BR doesn’t tend to take any opposition lightly, and even with the second leg of our CL tie against Bayern on Tuesday, I expect to see a full-strength side named. Our full-strength, of course, still offers some variation. Will Maeda play through the middle, or will that role be entrusted to Idah? Will Maeda start at all, given that Jota still needs game time? Or Yang for Kühn? Will Scales start at centre-back, and if so, which of the two incumbents will be rested? Is it Taylor or Sclupp at left back? Will McCowan get the nod at the start, allowing the boss to rest Engels or Hatate? What about Ralston?

Although that looks as though we have a capable and adaptable squad, and there’s no doubt that every other manager in the country would give their eye teeth for such selection dramas, there is little doubt that we are significantly short in midfield. We went into the season with five players, and while we had up till now been very fortunate with injuries, our luck had to end some time. And it has, with Bernardo being ruled out for around six weeks. So, down to four then. And that is something which should definitely concern us.

I’ve been rooting around our B team and youths for possible replacements, and I’m afraid there doesn’t appear to be one who looks remotely capable of stepping up. We will just have to hope that future injuries in that department are avoided, for we have no other option. This obviously needs to be addressed in the summer, and I’d expect us to be looking at one or other of the midfield regulars for other Scottish clubs.

While that probably brings us back to the hardy perennial of Lennon Miller, there are other options available. Including a former colleague of McCowan at Dundee. It would be harsh on Tony Docherty for us to take another of his players, especially given that a third has agreed to join up next season at Ibrox, but that’s the harsh reality of football nowadays. Hand out short-term contracts and they can come back to bite you in the rear end! Either way, whether we concentrate on finding a suitable signing in Scotland or elsewhere, we cannot go into next season so short in such a vital area of the pitch.

But back to today. In form opponents or not, we should be looking at three points from this one. That’s not to say it is a gimme, for I fully expect it to be a hard-fought ninety minutes. I’m looking forward to watching it, that’s for sure. Two things I want today then-three points and no further injuries. It’s hard to say which is more important.

When the post match judgements run their course Im going return to my point about the power supporters have outside of boycotts but is not used.
Not just for you but for anyone interested in how to cause change.

In meantime Celtic are a joy to watch just now.

Bada, will that be the game we will win the league, and even if not, it’s still good news.

Auldheid, if we are to go out and sign a player behind KT, how long will it take to sell him on? I like the idea of having 2 old heads at LB. Make up for all the years we have had to suffer GT. Remember Wednesday only really changed when he went aff.

BP, we were industrious, is probably the best way to describe it today. But after a hard shift Wednesday. That’s good enough for me. Played some nice football, but nothing spectacular.

Seen earlier the chat about BR needing us and thought, I don’t agree with this nonsense. His record speaks for its self and I believe, if we got another yes man, just happy to take a wage with no real ambition, how has that worked out for us in the past.

More common ground since neither do I.

To me is was one of those serendipity moments where both sides won.

Serendipity has a fairly narrow meaning, one that is concerned with finding pleasing things that one had not been looking for.

The thing about that kind of serendipity is like the Spanish Inquistion no one expects it.

Hope its on our bench in return leg.

The thing is if serendipity did not exist there would be no word to describe it. 🙂

Auldheid, I think the only lucky thing was that he was out of work and DD likes him.

There maybe a number of reasons for this, but there is no doubt he likes him or BR would never have been back.

The manager needs to push the board to be the best they can be, and not just accept what’s given to him.

If BR has ambition then that shouldn’t be taken as a flaw, but instead it should be a stipulation when applying for the job of Celtic manager.

Evening

Had a couple of tough weeks after my brother-in-law was rushed into hospital with heart murmurs. Now the bugger is talking about being ready for the Sheep match on the 25th. Touch ambitious but better times ahead hopefully.

Was at game today and thought we played really well against tedious opponents and a ref who is hopeless. I remain to be convinced by Yang on the right wing but he was hardly disastrous was he? The rest were though very good, 3 lovely goals and I was delighted for Adam Idah scoring as he works hard as anyone.

Can anyone explain this?
BBC Sports Online Football Scores Page, Lowland League.

7 games, 14 teams.
All scores posted. ( Celtic B win 3-1 vs Boness )

All scorers posted, EXCEPT those for Celtic.

This happens on a very regular basis. The scorers for 13 teams are listed, including Boness, but yet not for Celtic.
What gives? If this is spite, it is petty in the extreme.

Sane, Gnabry, Goretska and Stanisic on for Bayern after 70 minutes. Hard to tell if this was pre-planned by Kompany, or a reaction to today’s events so far. A draw doesn’t hurt Bayern. They would still lead Leverkusen by 8.

Looks as if they are quite content with a point. Certainly not busting a gut.

Watching last 20 mins of BM v Leverkusen I am wondering how Leverkusen with a fair degree of possession and players as strong and technically gifted as BM can not score even 1 against BM how Celtic who will have less possession than Leverkusen can hope to score 2 and not lose any.

As i said earlier I hope we have Serendipity on our side.

I was fondly wondering whether or not Munich were tired or not from midweek.

I think not. They simply did the minimum possible not to lose. It was good practice for future away CL ties, and with a comfortable Bundesliga lead, all they had to do was to simply fend off Leverkusen.

Switching to Everton, great to see Moyes having some success there.

Hi Craig:
I always assumed that someone from each home club texted scores and scorers to the BBC during each game ( and I wonder how sites like LiveSoccer stay updated from all over the world? )
Are you suggesting we are withholding the scorer data?
Not having a go. I’m just curious what’s going on. Because this also happens when Celtic B are playing away.

Not saying the club are withholding information, possible that the BBC are though due to not getting access, if the opposition scorers get named and not Celtics then I’d say the BBC are at it.

Jimbo,
Glad to hear your BIL is on the mend. Once we start talking about going to games all is well in our world. I don’t often disagree with what you say but I will tonight. I thought Idah was poor, although his goal was lovely. In my opinion he is not working hard. I watched him closely today given that BR said twice in two separate press conferences that against Bayern we missed the triggers for the press. I think he was referring to Idah and I could see why today. Jogging across the front line is not enough. I don’t recall at any point him breaking into a sprint unless he was chasing a through ball. He needs to work harder or he won’t start. And if he doesn’t start he gets rusty and it’s a vicious circle. His touch is not great either but there is no excuse for not running.

Auldheid, I think the only lucky thing was that he was out of work and DD likes him.
There maybe a number of reasons for this, but there is no doubt he likes him or BR would never have been back.

If BR has ambition then that shouldn’t be taken as a flaw, but instead it should be a stipulation when applying for the job of Celtic manager.
==================
The thing that puzzles me is how to square the belief DD is only in Celtic as a profit taker as result of being an individual owner of more shares than other directors, is why does BR need to push the Board of which DD is a significant member if DD has employed BR with the aim of gradual improvement year on year within safe budgeting based on having cash in hand to do so. That money in the bank tat allows for an evolutionary approach Is a significant change from the days when it did not exist.

Who on the Board would go against DD , how and why? Cui bono?

The Celtic history is of a Board who failed to support the manager in times with no cash in hand. I think that past belief no longer applies because having cash in hand is s a major change factor that has not been sufficiently given much thought to.

What if having cash in hand opens the door for evolutionary progress?

What if BR signs up for another 3 years because he and DD believes BR is the right man to make evolution happen? Not just on his eye for a player ready to start (not a lot of evidence he is 100% there but what manager is?) but his eye on a cheaper player whom BR thinks he can coach to become a starter. Something I think he can justifiably claim. I expect Engels and Bernardo for example to become regular starters next season just by bulking up like Ryan Christie did.

Would deploying that cash in hand on higher wages to attract and retain finally kill the negative narrative that The Celtic Manager and The Board are always in conflict with each other or is PL supported by other Board members opposed to DD’s aim?

Why and how? It does not stand up to reason to me, more based on past narrative.

AULDHEID, it could have been a factor that Ange had made his mind up to bugger off once young master Lawell got his job. Who knows?

The truth of the matter is that no-one knows, except the people within the club.

I could hazard a guess that as long as DD was not spending money and still got the honour of saying he makes the decisions at our club ( See that ” our club”) and he’s the owner, might make some sense. And the last thing he might want is to be associated with failure in a two horse race.

Wouldn’t do his legacy any good and billionaires want to leave legacies.

The one thing I think we can agree on is that PL and his son would not have been happy with BRs comments just before Xmas last year, when the huns were narrowing the gap.

Low and behold young master Lawell goes the journey and as sure as mince is mince and beans is beans, Master Lawell got the message.

In the summer window and make 2 x record signings within the space of 2 weeks.

As I said, I don’t know, I don’t have a clue, but sometimes even a blind man can see what’s happening around them.

PL still wants to feel relevant, otherwise why fly to London for the Schlupp loan deal?

Not in his remit drawer, but until someone tells him what his remit is, he may never know.

========
Although we do not know for sure one reasonable explanation based on when Board approval above the CEO and FCEO and managers set budget detailed on Celtic web site is that the chances were that Schlupp would be over the set limit for MN and BR and needed a Board member present to approve the signing?

That is to follow the published rules designed to protect Celtic from becoming unsustainable? I reckon most companies have set budget limits and rules to allow above budget payments to be made. Nothing sinister just normal practiced.

Who better than PL who knows the accounts and budgets set and the circumstances that justify the Board approving an above set limit signing.?

Since Schluup signed PL could not have withdrawn permission. to proceed in the circumstances and BR would have been entitled to challenge PL on footballing grounds..

Nothing but a formality in the circumstances.

I would never believe what a manager says about a player in public and what he says in private. Throw one player under the bus an players wonder who is next.

I think BR will have seen what you did. A performance with room to improve on the pressing and holding up play front.
