Trust Has To Work Both Ways
Morning,all.
The big news in European football today will be the draws for the next stages of the three major European club trophies. The big news there in midweek was the demise of some big names in the game, such as AC Milan, Juventus and Atalanta, and especially Man City. Since they were up against Real Madrid, the big news could have been even bigger, given that they have won five out of the last nine tournaments.
The three Italian teams going out does the country’s chances of grabbing that fifth Champions League spot no favours at all. That looks like being a three-way between England, Spain and Germany for the two spots available. In which case, a lot is riding on the remaining participants from those tournaments.
One of which is obviously Bayern Munich. That was the big news item this week for us Celtic fans. As we know, we gave it everything only to be suckered and scuppered by a scrappy goal with virtually the last kick of the game. As I said in Wednesday’s article, every one of the players came off the pitch a hero. Beaten over the two legs of course, but far from disgraced. And announcing to the rest of the European game that the days of being a pushover at this level are gone.
Whether they are gone for good remains to be seen. A lot depends on the next transfer window in particular. My colleague MAHE said yesterday that it is time to spend the cash, and I couldn’t agree more. How long have we looked at our preferred starting XI and thought it looked good, but could be better? Actually, not that long! For years we knew that our team was ill-equipped at this level, and it is only recently that we have looked to be in reasonable shape for the challenge.
In those not so distant days, we had a bench which was fairly interchangeable with the starting line-up. Not a lot to choose between them. Mainly because so many of the entire squad were substandard at the required level. That is not the case these days. Certainly there is a substantial gap between those we are comfortable with at the start, and those available to replace them.
Now more than ever, with the increasing number of games being thrown at us, we need a bigger pool of quality players to choose from. A back of the fag packet calculation of how many games would be required for us to reach the same stage in Europe next year plus runs to both cup finals comes to sixty games. (I’m happy to be corrected on this one, of course!) That is way too many for any player, especially established internationalists who can be required to hit double figures for their country as well.
If you look at our bench on Tuesday night with Forrest and Bernardo missing through injury, I would say only Jota was of the required quality to fit in seamlessly. I wouldn’t have too many worries either about Scales, Ralston and McCowan, nor Taylor. But the rest were either youths,Yang and two keepers. That is simply not enough to get us through next season, even if we are as lucky with injuries and suspensions as we have been this season.
Yet how do we convince players to join us when we can only offer a realistic shot at the bench? Or, which of our regular starters are we going to say isn’t good enough? Worse, which of our regular starters is going to angle for a move, which means replacing with like-for-like or better? How does the manager persuade a notoriously risk-averse board to dig out the debit card over the summer and spend some of the accumulated wealth on the team, a team which might have just won another treble and has already done us proud in Europe?
How does he react if, as has been the case in the past, he is told that the players he has are obviously good enough, given the recent successes? Even though they will all be a year older, even though some of them may be agitating for that big move while the iron is hot? How will the fans react if their reward for all the years of downsizing, decline and planned obsolescence is to see that make a comeback, only this time with bells on? In fact, will the fans and the manager vote with their feet as they have done before, the fans by staying away again and the manager by deciding not to extend his contract?
These are heavy questions to be considered as we head towards the final stages of the current season, a season which we all hope will end in domestic glory. A season which ended in Europe with heroic failure after some magnificent performances. The manager should be sitting down with the board over the next five or six weeks, especially during the international break, and thrashing out all the issues.
His budget. The wage ceiling. The areas of the team that need strengthening, whether those recruited are to be first-team ready or just upgraded replacements on the bench. Uncle Tom Cobley and all, so to speak. They should also be thrashing out the details of the manager’s contract as a matter of urgency, though I would fully understand any reluctance on his part to sign anything before the end of the next transfer window! And then they can sit down with the full management and coaching teams over all the age groups and categories in our academy and figure out what has gone wrong in the last two decades, and how to get it fixed.
We cannot continue to throw money at this only to see our decent talents poached and those we decide aren’t good enough either leave the game completely or move down the domestic ladder. Joining Celtic as a youth should be a career opportunity, and many have gone on to have a career in the game. But not at the standard we require, which is why only Tierney, CalMac and Forrest have broken through to be regulars in the last fifteen years.
So yes, Tuesday night was a night to remember. Yes, this season has every chance of being one to remember too. But we are a long way short of the finished article, a long way short of where we need to be to take the next steps forward. The ball is very firmly in the board’s court. They can look back especially at the last four windows in particular to see which of the two policies in place worked best, and make their decisions based on that. The days of being risk-averse to the point of wasting millions on dross rather than investing in genuine quality have to be a thing of the past. Trust the footballing side of the club to do their job, which is to bring success on the pitch domestically and in Europe. And then, who knows? We might even begin to trust the financial side of the club to do their job too by simply bringing in the money to enable that.

Auldheid,
” should be part of their responsibility “
Just a snippet from James Forrest subsequent article mentioned earlier.
‘It’s also in the SFA’s interest to find out who these investors are, and scrutinize them thoroughly before letting them enter the game. But if you’ve been reading the papers, you’ll know that the SFA seems set to approve this without knowing who they are or what their motivations might be.
As I said earlier, Ibrox fans can’t rely on the media to do due diligence for them. The media cheered Craig Whyte through the door, then Charles Green. If fans have forgotten that, they need to wake up and take control.
It’s clear they can’t count on the SFA either.
The SFA has already indicated it will allow these investors in without any second thoughts. What’s strange is that the SFA imposed limits on Hibs’ investors because of their ties to Bournemouth, but now we’re told a large stake in Ibrox will be accepted, even though there are claims that the Leeds chairman will be a principal investor.’
Good talking Auldheid.
Need to bow out now.
Got a night of Silencers music gig

I’m of a similar mind that there has been an awaking by those who pumped their money in to satisfy a shower of ingrates, many of whom are toxic and not only do they want their money back they want to leave the toxicity for the new guys to address.
One possibility is The 49ers will realise any chance of making a profit depends on removing the toxicity and if that reduces ST income then they adjust their business model to that reality and still make a profit because they can spend more (although less than currently) than all other clubs bar Celtic.
On that note I thought the point Alan Morrison made about those other clubs being a cheaper takeover option for making a profit is a good one and the example of Hearts owner making Hearts more financially solid could mean R2ngers might find themselves in a fight for 2nd place.
The other clubs with more than 20k regular supporters all fall into that category.
From a Scottish society benefit aspect anything that makes R2ngers support less toxic is more than welcome.

Your recent clips of keeper bloopers remind me of the old saying.
You don’t have to be mad to be a goalkeeper-but it certainly helps!
THE.REAL MCCOY thanks for that, give my love to the BRIG🙏👍❤👍🙏
List of possible CL playoff opponents. No gimmes, and some (Olympiacos) harder than others, but none that Celtic should fear playing:
I noticed talk on here about possibly becoming a Champions League “Pot 3” or even a “Pot 2” team.
As everyone now plays 2 sides from Pots 1, 2, 3 and 4 what advantage would we gain by increasing our status in the league standings. I get it automatic qualification would be a massive bonus but I’m not sure we’d gain anything in the league games.

Your source is an NGO! 😂🤣😭
Anyway political posts on the blog are virtually non-existant nowadays, except the odd, random, diehard activist.
Like one of those old Japanese soldiers still hiding out in the jungle, oblivious to the fact that the war is over.
When it does occasionally rare it’s ugly head – I’ll put it to sleep again.. easily.

I’ll take Pafos, Mike!
Another favourable draw??
Well well. Who would have thunk it?

The question is will Beaton be asked to explain?
Will the VAR team?
AULDHEID
Some good questions there, mate. Don’t expect answers to the last two, other than Naw.
16R…Brookings claims it is bipartisan so should be read as such. Anyhoo, here’s another link, this time from a Native American source, which dismisses the figures you quoted. I still think the figures you quoted were excessive and this 2nd link also claims, as Brookings did, that the sample size was too small (500 voters) and other studies into voting habits were conducted with or subject to flawed data. The 8-page report is actually quite interesting irrespective of the results but one thing that stood out was the highest figure quoted from any demographic group voting for Trump was 47%, much less than your quoted 65%.
So there! 🤣
McCaff – The Brookings thing is the first search result on Google for crying out loud! 😂
Not a polling company,or an MSM outlet (as one would expect), but a Bill Gates funded NGO!!
Lazy, lazy posting my friend.
It only took me a minute to discover the source of their funding, which tells you that it’s agenda driven.
Always try to seek out independent sources for news would be my advice.
Hoop hoop hooray, as requested this morning I’ve had a look at the voting for our Champions League games. You asked me to ignore the actual total voting numbers and to try to determine who our most valuable players were over the campaign.
So I decided to just look at who received our Man Of The Match awards for the 10 games along with who came 2nd and 3rd. Here’s the data – make of it what you will!
Opponent – Score – MOTM – 2nd – 3rd
Bratislava 5-1 Engels, Scales, Maeda
Dortmund 1-7 Scales, Schmeichel, Hatate
Atalanta 0-0 Trusty, Scales, Schmeichel
Leipzig 3-1 Kuhn, McGregor, Hatate
Brugge 1-1 Maeda, Trusty, Schmeichel
Dinamo Zagreb 0-0 Bernardo, Trusty. Schmeichel
Young Boys 1-0 Schmeichel, McGregor, Hatate
Aston Villa 2-4 Idah, Schmeichel, Hatate
Bayern (H) 1-2 Maeda, Engels, Johnston
Bayern (A) 1-1 Johnston, Schmeichel, McGregor
So there seems little doubt over our most valuable performer. In the 10 games played, Kasper made the top 3 in 7 of them!
16R…it’s the results I’m questioning, and both sources are offering you the same information. The figures you quoted are disputed due to the nature of the sample size.
I thought the 65 per cent was a lot, especially from the Native American demographic, and had a quick look. It wasn’t really lazy, it was just a quick check. I’m definitely gonna be lazy noo, though, cos I’m no gaun looking for another source to try to convince you! You either want to believe it or you don’t! 🥱😴😵😂
Kyogo’s shoulder injury cannot be too serious. He is on the bench today for Rennes’ relegation battle with Reims. Reims went down to 10 men after 5 minutes and are down 1-0 at HT. Kyogo remains on the bench.
Al-Gettaefaq have won 3 of their 4 games since Slippy G was mutualled, and have moved up from 13th to 8th in the Saudi League.
Welsh on the bench for Mechelen again today.

Those goalkeeper clips are hilarious, confirming what we already knew – keepers are mad.
There’s one missing and despite searching all over the internet I can’t find any video of it, so I’ll need to explain it in words.
Back in his Partick Thistle days, Alan Rough made a great save and, clutching the ball, stood up just off his goal line. He then reached his arm back for a long throw out to a teammate. As the ball left his glove, the linesman immediately raised his flag.
The referee stopped play and ran over to the linesman to ask what he was flagging for (no radio communication between officials in those days). Linesman told him that when Roughie reached behind himself the whole ball had crossed the line, so he had conceded a goal, which the ref duly awarded. Cue pandemonium.
Nowadays in leagues where they employ goal line technology (not available in Scotland except at Hampden for cup semis and finals) the ref would get a signal on his watch.
I have no idea who the Jags were playing or the final result, but I have a clear recollection of the incident being reported in the press because it made me laugh at the craziness of it. If anyone can find anything to help me stand this story up, I’d be grateful.
Steven McLean has been appointed referee for Celtic’s trip to Easter Road tomorrow 😱 with Alan Muir running the VAR operation…😱
McCaff – We are fatigued.
Tired,fed up with it all.
It’s over, let it go.

2 minutes to go in Rennes game. Still 1-0 up against 10 man Reims. They have made 3 subs, but Kyogo still on bench.
If score stands, they move 8 points clear of relegation play off spot.
16 Roads McCaff,
It wasn’t my intention to initiate any political skirmishes today. My cartoon picture was intended more as an ironic historical take on the world.
And remember if you know your history it’s enough to make your heart go woah oh oh

The vast majority of Celtic supporters would welcome American investment in the football club.
If we had got through it would have been Leverkusen and another German team. I think they’ll do Bayern

Thanks for the clips! Not quite throwing it into his own net, but just after Gary Sprake failed to grab a ball in front of the Kop during a Liverpool – Leeds game in 1973, the Kop started singing “Careless Hands” by Mel Torme.🤣. The goal is near the end of this clip, but unfortunately cuts off before the crowd start singing.
