Trust Has To Work Both Ways

Morning,all.

The big news in European football today will be the draws for the next stages of the three major European club trophies. The big news there in midweek was the demise of some big names in the game, such as AC Milan, Juventus and Atalanta, and especially Man City. Since they were up against Real Madrid, the big news could have been even bigger, given that they have won five out of the last nine tournaments.

The three Italian teams going out does the country’s chances of grabbing that fifth Champions League spot no favours at all. That looks like being a three-way between England, Spain and Germany for the two spots available. In which case, a lot is riding on the remaining participants from those tournaments.

One of which is obviously Bayern Munich. That was the big news item this week for us Celtic fans. As we know, we gave it everything only to be suckered and scuppered by a scrappy goal with virtually the last kick of the game. As I said in Wednesday’s article, every one of the players came off the pitch a hero. Beaten over the two legs of course, but far from disgraced. And announcing to the rest of the European game that the days of being a pushover at this level are gone.

Whether they are gone for good remains to be seen. A lot depends on the next transfer window in particular. My colleague MAHE said yesterday that it is time to spend the cash, and I couldn’t agree more. How long have we looked at our preferred starting XI and thought it looked good, but could be better? Actually, not that long! For years we knew that our team was ill-equipped at this level, and it is only recently that we have looked to be in reasonable shape for the challenge.

In those not so distant days, we had a bench which was fairly interchangeable with the starting line-up. Not a lot to choose between them. Mainly because so many of the entire squad were substandard at the required level. That is not the case these days. Certainly there is a substantial gap between those we are comfortable with at the start, and those available to replace them.

Now more than ever, with the increasing number of games being thrown at us, we need a bigger pool of quality players to choose from. A back of the fag packet calculation of how many games would be required for us to reach the same stage in Europe next year plus runs to both cup finals comes to sixty games. (I’m happy to be corrected on this one, of course!) That is way too many for any player, especially established internationalists who can be required to hit double figures for their country as well.

If you look at our bench on Tuesday night with Forrest and Bernardo missing through injury, I would say only Jota was of the required quality to fit in seamlessly. I wouldn’t have too many worries either about Scales, Ralston and McCowan, nor Taylor. But the rest were either youths,Yang and two keepers. That is simply not enough to get us through next season, even if we are as lucky with injuries and suspensions as we have been this season.

Yet how do we convince players to join us when we can only offer a realistic shot at the bench? Or, which of our regular starters are we going to say isn’t good enough? Worse, which of our regular starters is going to angle for a move, which means replacing with like-for-like or better? How does the manager persuade a notoriously risk-averse board to dig out the debit card over the summer and spend some of the accumulated wealth on the team, a team which might have just won another treble and has already done us proud in Europe?

How does he react if, as has been the case in the past, he is told that the players he has are obviously good enough, given the recent successes? Even though they will all be a year older, even though some of them may be agitating for that big move while the iron is hot? How will the fans react if their reward for all the years of downsizing, decline and planned obsolescence is to see that make a comeback, only this time with bells on? In fact, will the fans and the manager vote with their feet as they have done before, the fans by staying away again and the manager by deciding not to extend his contract?

These are heavy questions to be considered as we head towards the final stages of the current season, a season which we all hope will end in domestic glory. A season which ended in Europe with heroic failure after some magnificent performances. The manager should be sitting down with the board over the next five or six weeks, especially during the international break, and thrashing out all the issues.

His budget. The wage ceiling. The areas of the team that need strengthening, whether those recruited are to be first-team ready or just upgraded replacements on the bench. Uncle Tom Cobley and all, so to speak. They should also be thrashing out the details of the manager’s contract as a matter of urgency, though I would fully understand any reluctance on his part to sign anything before the end of the next transfer window! And then they can sit down with the full management and coaching teams over all the age groups and categories in our academy and figure out what has gone wrong in the last two decades, and how to get it fixed.

We cannot continue to throw money at this only to see our decent talents poached and those we decide aren’t good enough either leave the game completely or move down the domestic ladder. Joining Celtic as a youth should be a career opportunity, and many have gone on to have a career in the game. But not at the standard we require, which is why only Tierney, CalMac and Forrest have broken through to be regulars in the last fifteen years.

So yes, Tuesday night was a night to remember. Yes, this season has every chance of being one to remember too. But we are a long way short of the finished article, a long way short of where we need to be to take the next steps forward. The ball is very firmly in the board’s court. They can look back especially at the last four windows in particular to see which of the two policies in place worked best, and make their decisions based on that. The days of being risk-averse to the point of wasting millions on dross rather than investing in genuine quality have to be a thing of the past. Trust the footballing side of the club to do their job, which is to bring success on the pitch domestically and in Europe. And then, who knows? We might even begin to trust the financial side of the club to do their job too by simply bringing in the money to enable that.

Last year, our charity drives raised over £4000 for deserving causes. You are truly a wonderful collective, giving selflessly to others in need.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The bulk of the money was split fairly evenly between our two nominated causes, which were
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and Blood Cancer UK.

New Year, New Cause! From 1st January till 30th June, we will switch our attentions to raising funds for another source of wonderful work on behalf of those who need it most.

Repost from the tail-end of the last article,by

McCaff

Sorry for taking so long to reply, as was caught up watching more hoops heartbreak tonight.
Anyway done something, I have been meaning to do for years, involving the impact of a third of our squad will the 8 homegrown rule, and the minutes contributed within a European campaign.

This is after what could be described as a very decent campaign for ourselves, with room to improve still hopefully?

But the following set of figures, could be regarded as a huge issue for concern, upon the future of the bigger picture imo?

These are the minutes provided by homegrown players within this season CL campaign.
Baring in mind, individual minutes, which would consist of 990 minutes per game.

Slovan. 232 homegrown min
Dortmund 139
Atalanta 114
Leipzig. 158
Brugge. 163
Zagreb 268
Young boys 159
Villa 216
Bayern (h) 155
Bayern (a) 90

Total. 1694 minutes from homegrown players out of 9900 individual playing minutes within CL.

Take the 900 minutes from calmac away, and 794 left.

And the majority produced from Taylor, who many wouldn’t even class as CL quality in the first instance?

Even getting replaced by Tierney, should hopefully improve such figures, but this with a massive question mark against fitness and availability in operation?

This is where we currently find ourselves as the best and most successful club ever in Scottish football.

But find it very alarming to where we potentially could find ourselves in a few seasons time in this regard?

Putting extra playing demands upon our 17 other players within our squad, will take its toll, within an increasing demand of matches, especially when we are looking to be in the market for international quality players for ourselves.

This season is only a benchmark for what future campaigns could be like, and that’s without knowing where we currently stand within the coefficient standing. That also stands to bring an increase in matches, whilst trying to form a squad for the season ahead?

All of this in play for ourselves, with a greater demand for our Scottish homegrown players to contribute more minutes towards SPFL, in order for a better rotation policy in place for these higher profile CL matches.

So this current policy of keeping the background staff within coaching, especially at younger levels, just isn’t going to meet the demands of where our intentions for the club, to be heading in as things currently stands imo?

Morning all!
Pitymevin…I agree it needs external intervention but for that to happen SFA/SYFA/SPFL have all got responsibility to at least try to build something tangible and sustainable. It’s not happening so there’s no reason for the Government to throw cash at something that’ll just take the cash and waste it!
It’s a much bigger problem than most realise and that’s probably the reason nobody at any level wants to touch it – and to be fair, when money is as tight as it is, nonetheless Community Charge increases yesterday, no wonder Govt can’t/won’t properly commit!

Remember I said I would post something on getting involved?

I did on a previous blog but I doubt you saw it.

Ill find my post and provide a link to it.

In the meantime Ive uploaded the SFSA Fans Manifesto to

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B62m3ggkEX2RZUZ4MEhZUlBlMHM/view?usp=drivesdk&resourcekey=0-PUhOLy1ZluxHnPwjOEhIcQ

Where grassroots football is covered under Section 5. I think you all will find it interesting.

The thing is the manifesto was brought to attention of SG and following a meeting MSPs who sought change arranged the Minister arranged for a series of meetings with stakeholders to look into the issues in the Manifesto at Round Table Meetings.

The SG were dragged kicking and screaming to agree to that but the principle of SG involvement has been established and grassroots football is in the SFSA manifesto and should get an airing.

Once Westminster pass legislation on oversight in England then I think the SG will have to become fully committed as their excuse not to no longer stands.

I’ll try and find that post explaining how SFSA got a way into Hollyrood.

Found it.

OMG, that’s the kind of incident where you hope the ground will open up and swallow you. The ref will know he could have blown for a free kick when the forward lunged at the ball through the keeper’s legs when the keeper was trying to waste time. I suspect he took the view that because the forward didn’t touch the keeper and the 2 of them didn’t make anything of it he could just let play continue.
Once the keeper picks the ball up, he can’t then put it down and pick it up again, but this is exactly what he does resulting in an indirect free kick being awarded. It looks like the ref only realised he should award this when the forward appealed for it.
The ref then allowed the forward to pull the ball from the keeper’s hands, place it and take a quick free kick resulting in a goal. The ref needs to then decide whether this was acceptable, but it’s a real Hobson’s choice. Allow it, give the goal, and the defending team will give him grief. Stop play and have a controlled free kick situation and the attacking team will give him grief.
It looks like the ref decided not to penalise the quick thinking and therefore the goal was correctly awarded.

I was pleased to hear Alan bring up FSR with it’s limitations on what can be spent.

Real McCoy

With regard to SFA not diligently applying FSR; UEFA became well aware as a result of shareholders lawyers letter of May 2016 that both SFA and Rangers needed extra watching as what took place in the 2011 licensing process was tantamount to fraud.

In general terms there are changes in the rules that leave less wriggle room to swerve but in specific terms UEFA FSR adds another scrutiny/monitoring layer that let’s them check back on licence granting process if an event surfaces like another club claiming breach that brings both SFA and club under added scrutiny.

SFA know this and the risk they take if they swerve the rules but are caught out is Scottish football at national and club level will become unable to enter UEFA competitions if SFA found to have acted in what could be viewed as criminal behaviour so untrustworthy.

The risk still remains but the consequences of being found out would be draconian for Scottish football.

The Ibrox board/investors have basically raised the white flag. We surrender or we die.

Surrendering the right to run their beloved club, surrendering to not real Rainjurz men. Admitting that they are not capable now, or in the future, of mounting a credible challenge to Celtic’s domination. They most certainly will do walking away, after their pockets have been filled.

The reaction of their support, and their fan media, reveals the inner psyche of your average bluenose. Desperation, after a pitiful three trophies in 13 years. Anything that might just end their misery is to be embraced, without question or serious analysis.

I’m sure Dermot Desmond’s interest has been piqued. Maybe no bad thing.

Celtic as always will keep their own counsel when it comes to anything the SFA might illegally sanction. They have always done so. Nothing will change that. To engage them is to respect them.

You can argue pretty convincingly that Celtic FC props up the professional game in Scotland or depending on how much your in denial that the entire Scottish game props up Celtic FC. It depends on your outlook in life.

What can´t be denied is that the only club that is making money in Scotland is Celtic FC.

The recent comforting lies will be music to their ears. It´s an annual event. We have heard it all before. A season ticket drop across the Clyde is absolutely undesirable for them. We have spoken about this forever. There is no debate about it anymore. It´s good for business. It´s what they want.

There is an element of boardroom revenge satisfaction. A dirty fight waged behind closed doors.

Why would Celtic FC help them by complaining to the SFA when it will not affect their bottom line.

So Dave King has done exactly what everyone expected apart from the poor orange bigots. Boo fucking hoo. This mornings photo´s in the Daily Hun didn´t even need a story attached to it. It was Stewart trying to broker a deal to buy out panel takeover King Dave in familiar surroundings pretending to be best in class while a Eurpoean game was on against EPL relegation candidates. All so very seductive. Nothing more nothing less. A deal that even the bigoted Orange masses wouldn´t look at. This is the glass ceiling on their collective business acumen. Get rid of King and then if you invest even more millions then you might get a say on how the future will be run at Rangers. la la la la America

Foley invested in Hibs ( 8 million in debt a year after) He didn´t sound too delighted about his advice not been sought. Well he doesn´t have enough shares.

Bloom invested in Hearts ( Yeah and there was also external 8m invested in them also) see Hibs above

The Americans have invested heavily in Italian teams (four years back) not making much progress on or off the park. Ted Boehly at Chelsea. Nuff said he´s pished a billion down the stank hole already. They are still on the downward spiral. Thank god for Saudi money washing. There biggest problem is the culture difference. Squaring what they want to do with what the fans want to do with instantaneous success and its not going so well. See share prices, See debt mountains, See attendances, See no teams in Europe. Of course that issue doesn´t apply to the pally wally every man types that follow the huns. LMFAO

Naturally everyone knows that Trumpy Baby is going to make everything just so beautiful between USA and America. Anyone been following the markets ? eh dinny think so … how will the expected down turn in economies filter through to the follow follow brigade

Then there is the herd of mammoths in the room regarding dual club ownership conundrum. UEFA will basically forbid any dual ownership clubs from competing in the same tournament. So is there more money to be made by Leeds in the EPL possibly vying for European riches or are the investors going to prefer the huns hard slog over three qualifiers outwith the top 5 entry into Europe because its´so romantic and they hate the Pope.

Yesterday I interrogated four AI platforms with regards American sources regarding the recent Motherwell billionaires brought up in San Francisco investment story and there are no publications whatsoever. Dodgy Dave 2’s influence just doesn’t stretch that far.

So fuck them. Fuck their fantasy shite , laugh at it , your badly psychologically scarred if you are given it an even 1% level of credence … honestly you need help .. concentrate on Celtic´s possible treble ( what’s the odds) and sensible incremental improvement under the best Celtic Manager we have had since Big Jock

Fuck the SFA, Fuck Rangers, Fuck BBC Scotland
