Tomorrow’s Bhoys

Today’s article, please forgive me, shall focus on a non Celtic player, simply because I view this player as a test case for future emerging domestic talent.
I’m talking about Lennon Miller of course, speculate on how this plays out and the implications involved.

With Luke cup tied, on Sunday I recall thinking we could really do with him. I don’t think Reo would have played the full match if he was our player,,if being the biggest small word in the dictionary never mind football.

We now know there will be competition for his signature, serious competition, and presumably the lad via his advisors will do what he feels best.
And I’m very curious to find out, for it will not only tell us a lot but maybe hint at a trend.

If I were in the shoes of his advisors, I would start at the very beginning and analytically break down ‘their asset’.
We are looking at an attacking midfield young player with a touch of flair and a high ceiling. But the reason he has improved to this stage is by actually starting and playing games very regularly. There should be no doubt over that, none at all. It therefore makes sense to believe better will come with more starts and gametime, and being fantastically young, time is on his side as far as getting better via playing then hitting the bigtime goes.

But you all know the score, money talks. Yet the bigger the league, the bigger the club, the less likelihood of playing never mind starting and we could be staring at another wealthy but underwhelming overall career.

This article isn’t about to turn into a list of reasons why he should choose Celtic over the rest, but I will deliver a few reasons why our club’s approach to young emerging talent should change.

We shouldn’t have reached this point, assuming he heads elsewhere football operations need to learn a few lessons here. I firmly believe there’s nothing wrong with buying a young player and leaving him with his parent club to develop. If we had signed Lennon in the summer but left him there for a year, everyone’s happy. Now we will more than likely lose him. That comes on the heels of young Cummings seemingly heading for the hills, losing Ben Doak a while back etc.
Young players especially need to play, so while I’d never wish to hinder a career or stockpile them ala Chelsea, I do wish to see almost an entire team of youth out on loan at a good level.

Tomorrow’s stars aren’t going to fall into our lap, okay sometimes they do like KT, but we actually can turn a profit if they are deemed not good enough ala Bosun Lawell, plus the cream will rise, ala Callum down south that time. The Admira Wacker partnership was a step in the right direction, but just not enough. We need more official partnerships, a better umbrella of friends in the footballing world to constantly blood the next Celtic player. We need to catch the next Lennon Miller at 15/16, sign up, and keep loaned out until developed enough to bring into the squad proper.

In reality, these tasks generally fall to the Director of Football, instead we got a Head of Football Operations,,,interchangeable I hope, because that’s part of their job, overseeing the conveyor belt. Brendan has enough on his plate never mind 3/4/5 years down the line, beyond his current tenure. A big club takes these things seriously and for good reason, I see Kwon on loan doing well, but nothing significant elsewhere.
I’d be delighted if this is the very last time I type that.
In my humble opinion every window should look to today, and tomorrow.
Buy and develop the next Miller elsewhere Celtic, then reap the profit. There’s plenty of talent out there and I could give big name after big name who actually did truly benefit from early loans/actually playing to help prove it works.
The first team squads doing well, it would be nice if tomorrow’s Bhoys were doing likewise.

There was another free kick that we took quickly and despite the fact that we took it about 10 yards BACK from where the incident happened he still stopped the game and insisted that we took it from the correct spot – about 10 yards advanced!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that happen before!

Craig,

Watch the way Callum drops the ball, it would have to still be moving when he kicks it.

I’d like to be able to hear how quick he blows the whistle

Give him the benefit of the doubt on that one?

The anger would have been off the charts if Daizen had scored and there was no whistle.

There has been a few selective memories on display since Sunday evening. It would be nice if someone catalogued Beaton’s entire game for fuck-ups,but I think his display is gonna get ripped to shreds one error at a time.

By both sides. And it couldn’t happen to a more deserving cause.

If he thought the ball was still moving when it was taken, why did he turn around to see where it was heading?
If he was facing Callum and saw the ball was still rolling he should have naturally blew his whistle whilst still facing the ball kicker and explaining ( verbally or physically) why he blew his whistle.

First, I’m happy for the Huns to moan about officials, it means that the penny is dropping for them that shite officials affect every team. Equality stinks.

Second, they, not Celtic, can now demand foreign refs for big games and we should applaud their efforts.

Third, it saves them moaning about big Roy’s throw in in 1989. Not before time.

Perhaps the reason Maxwell mentioned that human error is natural is because of the number Beaton made during the game and not exclusively the non penalty!

Billy Bhoy @ 312
Free kicks are taken from where the offence occurred, with the exceptions of a penalty kick, an indirect free kick where the offence was inside the goal area, and where an offence occurred outside the field of play. Most refs, including myself, are not fixated on the ball being on the exact blade of grass where the offence occurred. As long as it was within a reasonable distance (a couple of yards) I would let the players get on with it. This varies depending on where the offence occurred, though. Free kicks near the penalty area would be placed strictly on the point where the foul occurred – as we all know, sometimes taking it back a few yards gives an unfair advantage. For all other free kicks, my rule of thumb was simple – if I let the free kick be taken, will anyone complain that it was in the wrong place? Same for both sides, keep it consistent and if anyone tries to steal too much ground, make him retake it. This applies to stealing ground back or forward from the point of offence (changed angles etc).
I mentioned the exceptions: the penalty kick is obvious so no need to explain. The indirect free kick in the goal area is taken from the line of the goal area directly ahead of where the offence occurred and defenders can line up on the goal line (6 yards away) or anywhere else 10 yards away, and where the offence occurred off the field of play, the free kick is taken at the touch line where the offence occurred.

I recall seeing this and couldn’t believe Beaton hauled it back. Quick free kicks should be allowed unless there is a good reason not to (injury, disciplinary sanction etc). None of these were the case in this incident, it looked to me that Beaton realised Maeda was clear and decided he wasn’t going to let that happen. The point is, the team offended against should not be punished by stopping them gaining an advantage from a quick free kick, except as above. Free kicks around the penalty area are trickier, as the defence will build a wall. For match control reasons, allowing a quick kick just outside the area is not a great idea.
Unless the ball was moving (and it didn’t appear to be) Beaton had no reason to have the kick retaken.

Many thanks for that – much appreciated!

Can I ask you another? I was watching a game the other day (canny remember who) and a forward elbowed a defender quite forcibly. The ref blew for a foul but took no action. When I say the replay I thought it was at least a yellow and perhaps a red. VAR didn’t get involved.
My question is: if they had and the ref decided it wasn’t a red can he produce a yellow?

Didn’t Celtic and the old Rangers have proposals for a B Team playing in the senior leagues at some stage?
Who rejected that and why?

==
I don’t recall but if you provide the reasons and look at the wider picture as SFSA have to do to be inclusive then perhaps their reasons stand up from a wider perspective but first you need to be open minded.

As regards government involvement the fact it is already happening in Westminster is chiel that winnae ding.

When the cry from both sides is corruption then only outside intervention can bring change.

Do you oppose that?

Andy BTW identifies the teachers strike as when what grass there was became neglected but that does not mean he does not recognise demography which should be part of the Round Table discussions, which are not Govt interference as all stakeholders are involved.

There will be no dictats but hopefully real problems will be recognised and addressed if self interest is put aside for every parties interest for the good of the game that Celtic will benefit from.

It is all down to how we see things and I take a less fearful view than you.

VAR wouldn’t be able to move an incident from no card to a yellow. They can recommend the ref to look at the monitor for serious foul play or violent conduct, but only for a red card offence. If the ref agrees, he can only issue a red card, not a yellow. If he doesn’t agree it should be a red, he has to stay with his initial decision of no card.

I’ve not seen enough of Lennon Miller to make a reasonable assessment of him. Is he any better than David Turnbull was at the same age ? DT’s time at Celtic was largely underwhelming and his career appears to heading in the journeyman direction.
====
I’m of similar thinking.

He has good technical ability but to play for Celtic much more is needed.

He could be another Turnbull.

I’m not ruling him out as a prospect but I wouldn’t put to much expectation weight on his shoulders.

My hunch is that the behemoths of the game aren’t too happy about sharing so much of the proceeds. Nor are they too keen on financial scrutiny.

===
Of course they aren’t but only because their self interest blinds them to the interdependent nature of football that makes it a sport and they want to run a sporting business as a commercial enterprise.

UEFA recognise this and FSR that was developed to suit the majority clubs with no access to non football income is UEFAs attempt to keep football as a sport

FSR and the new CL format allowed UEFA to significantly increase the solidarity payments to national associations to distribute so the wee teams can concentrate more on development of Lennon Miller that Celtic might sign than on survival again helps football to survive as a sport.

Solidarity Payment to SFA and clubs.

I suggested something on those lines by a reasonable redistribution of CL rewards to participating clubs and UEFA found a way to do it without participating clubs making a direct sacfrice.
===
In January or February 2024, UEFA sent the Scottish Football Association (SFA) €6.9 million in solidarity payments. The SFA then distributed the funds equally to all top-division clubs that did not participate in the 2023/24 group stage of the UEFA Champions League. This meant that each club received €766,666, or approximately £639,000.

UEFA’s solidarity payments are intended to help level the playing field between clubs, leagues, and associations. They also support the development of football at the grassroots and youth levels.

To receive solidarity payments, clubs must meet certain criteria set out in the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability regulations.

You make a lot of good historical points there based on the policy PL was under instruction to execute.

However the signs are the policy has changed and if BR is given an extended contract to see it through (which is why I think he was persuaded to come back) why not claim credit for pointing out what no longer works and encourage those you dismiss based on the past to get it right in the future?

In effect change your tune/tone.

The JMcG saga getting another airing — surprise surprise — the PL friendly edition.
The more they talk about it the more they give away.

PL put a contract to JMcG that matched the financials in his AV contract.
However to make the numbers he had to start every SPL game for us.

He questioned this proviso given that the AV numbers were more certain.
Play every game — back yourself / ask BR — and so he did.
BR would not give him that guarantee as you might expect .
He picked the team and no one else had it.

JMcG took the AV contract.

So if PL is all powerful BR is a fool to subject himself to the policies that caused him to leave in the first place?

Is that how you see it with your the mind reading abilities that give you an advantage over us less blessed?

How about Celtic having worked with UEFA as ECA member helped create the new CL format, the result of which makes the CL the biggest source of income that requires a better standard of player that whilst with room for improvement is 3 points away from qualifying for a further CL round that pays even more money that saves having to sell improved players and allows purchase of players above the prospect status like Kuhn has turned out to be.

I submit that is a more persuasive narrative indicating change than PL is still working to past policies.

Arsenal have no one in the 6 yard box when they have a corner. Then, as the corner is taken, they have 5 guys that run into the box. Causes panick in the defence, and creates a good chance. Seems like such a simple but effective thing to do. Wonder why more teams dont copy this.

As always I recommend a listen to the huddle breakdown and their analysis of the league cup final. It confirms what most of us have been saying. The midfield are offering next to nothing. Trusty was dreadful and Taylor and Johnston not much better. We are way too reliant on the wings and teams have worked us out. I was harsh on CCV as the huddle breakdown had him as our best ball carrier where as I thought he was poor in this respect. It seems as we have agreed teams are leaving him with the ball.
They were also surprised we didn’t utilise the ball over the top more. Apparently we did this three times in the first twenty minutes and not much after. Strange.
Anyway, worth a listen. Allan Morrison and Juco James know their stuff.

I don’t see what other options the ref had but sending him off. It’s violent conduct – a goal had been scored so the ball was out of play. The offender had no need to whack the ball in the way he did. He may not have intentionally aimed it at the keeper, but in his actions he took the risk that it would do so. Failure to act by the ref would have resulted in a more widespread confrontation, and the excessive force used meant a red card was the only option.
In my opinion, the ref handled it quickly and well, without undue fuss, and effectively prevented the situation escalating. The offending player needs to have a word with himself.

Hi Mike,
Wish we did. You don’t interfere with the keeper ( not tolerated in Europe ), you eliminate a lot of the pushing and shoving ( an excuse for the MIB to blow for a foul against us ), and if the corner is an outswinger, if favours the attackers.

Hi Bobby:
That made me chuckle.😊. Not much left of it. In the U.S., you can’t contribute to it after you retire, and there are required mandatory withdrawals every year from age 70, according to a formula stipulated by the Internal Revenue Service. The older you get, the more you must withdraw, and if your wife is 10 years or more younger than you ( mine is ), you must withdraw a lot more. Then the Feds take 32% in tax, and the State takes 10%.
