Tomorrow’s Bhoys

Today’s article, please forgive me, shall focus on a non Celtic player, simply because I view this player as a test case for future emerging domestic talent.
I’m talking about Lennon Miller of course, speculate on how this plays out and the implications involved.

With Luke cup tied, on Sunday I recall thinking we could really do with him. I don’t think Reo would have played the full match if he was our player,,if being the biggest small word in the dictionary never mind football.

We now know there will be competition for his signature, serious competition, and presumably the lad via his advisors will do what he feels best.
And I’m very curious to find out, for it will not only tell us a lot but maybe hint at a trend.

If I were in the shoes of his advisors, I would start at the very beginning and analytically break down ‘their asset’.
We are looking at an attacking midfield young player with a touch of flair and a high ceiling. But the reason he has improved to this stage is by actually starting and playing games very regularly. There should be no doubt over that, none at all. It therefore makes sense to believe better will come with more starts and gametime, and being fantastically young, time is on his side as far as getting better via playing then hitting the bigtime goes.

But you all know the score, money talks. Yet the bigger the league, the bigger the club, the less likelihood of playing never mind starting and we could be staring at another wealthy but underwhelming overall career.

This article isn’t about to turn into a list of reasons why he should choose Celtic over the rest, but I will deliver a few reasons why our club’s approach to young emerging talent should change.

We shouldn’t have reached this point, assuming he heads elsewhere football operations need to learn a few lessons here. I firmly believe there’s nothing wrong with buying a young player and leaving him with his parent club to develop. If we had signed Lennon in the summer but left him there for a year, everyone’s happy. Now we will more than likely lose him. That comes on the heels of young Cummings seemingly heading for the hills, losing Ben Doak a while back etc.
Young players especially need to play, so while I’d never wish to hinder a career or stockpile them ala Chelsea, I do wish to see almost an entire team of youth out on loan at a good level.

Tomorrow’s stars aren’t going to fall into our lap, okay sometimes they do like KT, but we actually can turn a profit if they are deemed not good enough ala Bosun Lawell, plus the cream will rise, ala Callum down south that time. The Admira Wacker partnership was a step in the right direction, but just not enough. We need more official partnerships, a better umbrella of friends in the footballing world to constantly blood the next Celtic player. We need to catch the next Lennon Miller at 15/16, sign up, and keep loaned out until developed enough to bring into the squad proper.

In reality, these tasks generally fall to the Director of Football, instead we got a Head of Football Operations,,,interchangeable I hope, because that’s part of their job, overseeing the conveyor belt. Brendan has enough on his plate never mind 3/4/5 years down the line, beyond his current tenure. A big club takes these things seriously and for good reason, I see Kwon on loan doing well, but nothing significant elsewhere.
I’d be delighted if this is the very last time I type that.
In my humble opinion every window should look to today, and tomorrow.
Buy and develop the next Miller elsewhere Celtic, then reap the profit. There’s plenty of talent out there and I could give big name after big name who actually did truly benefit from early loans/actually playing to help prove it works.
The first team squads doing well, it would be nice if tomorrow’s Bhoys were doing likewise.

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.
⭐️👏☘️👍🍾
That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.
Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.
Here is the link for the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust, our new charity which we will support.

(Buy and develop the next Miller elsewhere Celtic, then reap the profit.)
The above sentence is why our youth policy has the wrong priority.
I understand we are first and foremost a business to our custodians but the footballing side needs to be given a higher priority than at present.

Nabbla,

Thank-you for the post and the attachment, much appreciated.

Anyway,

– Compare and contrast the media reaction to when Arsenal issued a statement in support of Arteta when he called the officiating at a Newcastle v Arsenal game in November 2023, “an utter disgrace.”

Sky’s celebrated pundits Neville and Carragher rounded on Arsenal (and Liverpool, in respect of a similar incident).

“Writing on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Neville said: ‘Arsenal and Liverpool’s statements are wrong. Do it privately. Managers and players make far more mistakes than refs!’

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Luton, Carragher said: ‘This is not a moment to jump on the bandwagon with VAR and just batter people at Stockley Park and the officials because that’s not right.’

Arsenal’s statement is the second time a Premier League feels it has to directly address PGMOL this season.

Last month, Liverpool formally requested the audio between the VAR officials and referee Simon Hooper after their 2-1 defeat to Tottenham.” – Daily Mail.

Have we seen anything approaching a civilised/balanced approach from the Scottish media in this case? Nope, it’s hang the officials out to dry.

This is Sevco doing what Rangers have always been allowed to do. It is a matter between Sevco and the footballing authorities.

Cool heads, the bigger picture respect for the game is the better approach.

Stooping to Sevco’s level is not.

They’d love to bin VAR of course and go back to the good auld days.

Mahe,

A good read this morning.

I agree we should always be thinking ahead in Transfer Windows. That’s where we went wrong last season. Too many players bought with potential, the majority should have been and sent on loan.

The problem is football is about constant rebuild. The job is never done. The first team always needs recruits now.

During his interview after Sunday’s win. Brendan told us he stepped back from day to day coaching about three years ago. John Kennedy and the coaching staff look after the majority of the coaching.

Brendan (reportedly) was never keen on working with a Director of Football. Perhaps his role has developed into more of a hybrid of Coach/DoF?

Anyway,

The problem we have is primarily systemic.

Take Belgium for example.

Club Brugge operate an Under 23s club called Club NXT. They play in the Championship in Belgium. That’s one tier below their Premier League.

They also operate a sustainable football model, very similar to Celtic’s, with profit from player trading a key objective.

There is a lack of a pathway in Scotland between Under 19s and full time professional football.

According to Celtic’s website, our B side’s next game is against the University of Stirling.

With the counties demographics (in 1967 Scottish women had 3 kids compared to now in Glasgow/Edinburgh it’s just over 1.) Scotland has an ageing demographic.

There needs to be an acceptance that things have changed permanently. They aren’t going back to the 80s.

As always vision and acceptance of where we are at is needed at the top of Scottish football.

From kids football to the U23 level, the whole structure needs to change. A successful model like Belgium (population 11.8m) surely is worth investigating.

Belgian football has severe financial problems too. Anderlecht have been fighting huge debt for years. Debt incurred by poor financial management and overspending. As a consequence, Belgium’s largest club have been struggling for a number of seasons.

– But the country does produce very talented young players.

The current Coach of Brugge also came from Club NXT.

Money talks though. Arne left Club NXT for Germany for a fee of €100k. A season and a half at Augsburg. Three goals and five assists later and he sold for €11m.

Your suggestion in respect of Lennon Miller is a good one but there’s often more to situations like these than we are told.

Celtic can’t do it on our own. The SFA issued a report recently, a suggestion I read was allowing talented young players at senior clubs to play for clubs in lower tiers??

One thing’s for certain, you won’t find the truth with the Scottish media or it’s (mainly) poodle pundits.

Good morning, friends.
I’ll be at Linn Crematorium for 1pm today for the funeral of our departed friend Tony aka Setting Free The Bears. This site, and the other Channel, has list one of it’s best contributors. But of course his family have list something much more important than that.
We all have bucket lists with various different entries. But we also all have our agendas for life and that has the same final item.

Your article will succeed or fail on one phrase — “reap the profit”.
What exactly do you mean by “profit” — is it in the financial sense or is it the football sense?

If it is in the financial sense then we will continue to fail due to our current weaknesses that can be seen from space by a myopic dog from one of our streets.

Our biggest issue at the moment is the lack of cohesion in our football operations.

Current squad — too few have come through the ranks.
Current squad — lack of leadership / experience / football nous.
Current squad — player harvesting to the fore / buy cheap sell dear / 2 year pump and dump.

All elements need to change — more sophisticated model needed run by execs that can walk and chew gum at the same time so that rules out the one club golfer spawn of PL.

GT is central to our current team not by way of his footballing ability but by way of his longevity / his personality / his footballing experience.

The selling club model has been endorsed by too many — how much of the chat around any new player revolves around his sell on value not his contribution to the team on the park.

Plus the merry-go-round nature of the 2 year man — in and out to the drumbeat of bank balance building rather than the drumbeat of building a better football team to make the most of the footballing opportunities that are available to us.

Player growth / improvement is what we need.
Players who grow / improve will have opportunities.
It is down to us how we manage those opportunities.
Hopefully most will do it with us but some will move on.
And if they move on we have alternatives from all the player options out there.

Our youth set up.
Good players locally.
Good affordable players globally.
Players available on loan to fill a specific need.
Players looking for a new challenge who will be a good fit with our dressing room.
Bosmans looking to develop their careers / do something different.
Old sweats looking to live the dream / any dream.
Ex EPL GK’ing legends looking for a real gig.

18 years a failure — to his credit PL has tried most of these recruitment strategies.
Just a case that he could only ever manage to implement them one at a time.
That is not what we need — what we need is a full court press every single year.

Lennon Miller — the time was the last week in Aug 2023.
Waiting until the shoeshine boy is offering advice is too late.
1928 / 29 Wall Street financial reference if you want to know your history.

January will be a big month for us.

It will not be down to what we achieve.
It will be down to the scale of our ambition and the way we go about our business.

Plus what we do with players we need to do with coaches — our gene pool is West Virginia with a clipboard. Nothing against the individuals involved — who amongst us would say no — but the process that put them there.

Interesting article Mahe.

I’ve not seen enough of Lennon Miller to make a reasonable assessment of him. Is he any better than David Turnbull was at the same age ? DT’s time at Celtic was largely underwhelming and his career appears to heading in the journeyman direction.

Would we be having a Lennon Miller discussion if Odin Thiago Holm was ripping up the SPFL on a regular basis ? Probably not. OTH certainly ticked the age, height, and position on the park boxes. Can only assume that Brendan does not see a Celtic player in the young Norwegian.

Will any of the Celtic players who played in the Glasgow Cup final last night get anywhere near a first team jersey ? Not if the current first team squad remain fit and healthy.

Celtic recently stated that the facilities upgrades at Lennoxtown and Barrowfield are with the intention of producing Champions League standard players. That’s an easy statement to make, but very very difficult to execute, especially in the Scottish football environment.

LM vs DT — LM looks to be more dynamic.
Plus a bit younger — probably 2 years younger — for the same amount of influence on a game.

LM vs OTH — different players / I think.
LM is more expansive with OTH more of a grafter.
Again LM would appear to be one year ahead regarding playing involvement.
Bit of a guess as OTH has not been in the spotlight for 12 months.

Anyway our squad is missing at least one MF’er plus OTH needs time on the park / anybody’s park.

Lennoxtown is being upgraded — AP’s parting gift.
But it also needs a new level of facilities — as in a full size indoor pitch.
Plus we should try and make it more of a destination — conference facilities and the like.
DD must know somebody in the hospitality industry looking for a JV.
Plus improve the way in — Secret Squirrel branding at the moment.

We need to wring the cloth dry.
Not jog our way towards mediocrity.

Lennoxtown — Academy?
Barrowfield — Training ground?
Plus we need a B Team Stadium in G40.
Trips to Airdrie are such a riddy.

Final thought on the non penalty.

In recent years the Huns have been given every debatable decision and loads of ridiculous, indefensible ones as well. For a while they took to playing volleyball in their own area yet didn’t concede one penalty.

Is it likely that Celtic, and hopefully a few other clubs, have continued to quietly apply pressure on the SFA to stop the cheating under threat of calling it out loud and clear.

Be interesting to see what becomes of the Huns latest noisy attack.

CFC fail / big time / par for the course seemingly — CTV fails again.

Last night’s GCF was seemingly to be shown in the UK by CTV.
However the screen went dead and the transmission was seemingly a wash-out.
Cue howling and gnashing of teeth.

If this is the full story then how bad does it need to be before work is down / things fixed?

CTV has the potential to be as big a revenue stream as stadium operations.
Yet it is of the quality of low effort hospital radio and is infamous for its high quality price gouge.
There was no quality improvement but they still charged more for the service.

Consequently as with most things we need to get our erse into gear.
CTV could be huge but it needs new standards to start the journey.

Any feedback on this would be appreciated — KDS seems to hate CTV with a passion.

Penalty farrago — boot on the opposite foot …
How would Govan FC and their booster club handled it?

Initial foul outside the box — Ludge MIB blew early before contact was made with the line.
Ludge VAR — no obvious mistake so can’t get involved.

Plan B — attacker had a hold of the defender’s jersey.
No attacking foul either — free kick defence.

Nothing to see here — please move on.
Ludge Media — Rinse and repeat.
Sportscene — no penalty.

I wonder if the MIB / VAR audio will ever be published?
It would be beyond irony if their reticence to award was based on earlier bias to Govan FC.

Mahe,

Regarding Lennon Miller, much will depend on what valuation Motherwell place on him. If we are seriously interested, and maybe willing to let him stay at Motherwell at least till the end of this season, then it may be in their interests to do a deal with us.

It’s probably only us who could afford him from the clubs in Scotland. From what I have seen of him he looks the real deal, and would give us a few midfielders around the right age to develop further, given the fact that our captain won’t be around forever. From the pool of young players who are currently playing in Scotland, he looks to be the best candidate to replace our brilliant captain.

Like I said, much will depend on wether Motherwell’s valuation matches our own valuation of the player

Never before have I heard the word ‘minutes’ used so frequently in football dialogue.

If you can’t get minutes. You are going nowhere. Young players are desperate for ‘minutes.’

It’s why Arne left Brugge. A season and a half worth of minutes in the Bundesliga saw his value soar.

According to FIFA, Agents earned $888m from football last year.

Almost a billion dollars.

Attempts to restrict fees have led to protracted court cases. It’s a difficult balance to make: Protecting the rights of players v clubs.

The days of agents just being local guys have gone. Hollywood Agencies like Wasserman have entered the fray. Guys that made a handsome living, managing the careers of Tinseltown celebrities now act as soccer agents.

Wasserman were a particular favourite of Stevie G and Dave King. That ended in tears and a series of Debt for Equity swaps.

Anyway…

Don’t forget that Agent fees are on top of transfer costs. Ongoing payments by players to agents as a % of salary are the subject of HMRC scrutiny.

I think clubs were/are on the hook for this too.

Tax returns/BIK etc look pretty onerous. When I read through the details a few months ago, I did wonder how are the usual suspects are coping with this?

Holm, is 21. He turns 22 at the end of January. According to the attached he has so far spent 250 days injured during his brief career.

He’s currently out with a calf issue. That’s no reflection on the lad. The demands are enormous on these young players.

There’s intense competition out there to sign these young guys, even as they are developing physically.

Arne Engels is a case in point. Arne was developed by Brugge and according to what I can see he left for a fee of €100k. Before selling for €11m, eighteen months later.

As many do, I like the lad. I think he has real talent. I like the way he has integrated into the squad (that says a great deal for the squad). I was delighted to see him photographed at the Darts on Monday…

The issue highlights how much money there is to be made via the transfer of these young players. It’s cut throat.

With that level of increase in value over such a short period of time, it’s easy to see how clubs get themselves into difficulty financially. These young players are a commodity being passed along a supply chain.

Holm is perhaps a warning that too much asked too quickly, can be hugely detrimental.

A talented young guy at Celtic not ready for first team action, is an easy target for agents – and their contacts.

The player gets minutes, a fee and a higher salary.

The agent he gets a % of the sale fee and ongoing commission. Both often 5%.

With the incentives out there to move and Celtic’s need to win virtually every game. It’s extremely difficult for a young guy to break through.

The guys we are bringing in are often a few steps ahead in their development. Having been at clubs that are better able to give them the magic minutes.

Fingers crossed that Odin gets his fitness back in time for his 22nd birthday.

Good points on changing how players are developed and pointing out how shrinking population is reducing the grass at grass roots level.

A bit of irony for me is that SFSA Chairma Andy Smith has been singing the same grass roots song for ages , a song that will be heard at the round table meetings to take place at Holyrood over time that SFSA helped make happen.

You were dead set against SFSA because of suspicion of motives of some of the folk involved, but the lesson here is not to tar everyone who wants to improve Scottish football with the same sectarian brush, to do so simply cuts off opportunities for change.

To be fair you do not know Andy as I do but a more honest dedicated individual you could not wish to meet.

This got me wondering what is an average day in the life of BR. Surely he must be poring over recordings of Sportscene trying to evaluate if Lennon Miller is the real deal and worth a punt. I’ll be watching him intently on Boxing Day.

Thanks for the response.

Doesn’t Andy fantasise about the 1980s?

Didn’t Celtic and the old Rangers have proposals for a B Team playing in the senior leagues at some stage?

Who rejected that and why?

Scottish football has been in bad enough shape without getting politicians involved. Take the First Minister’s comments this week for example. Countless examples of a lack of fairness and bias.

Forget the notion of every getting a square deal from the Scottish establishment.

The irony is that with the demographics unfolding the way they are things are changing.

Scotland needs new thinking, new blood.

Been saying this for years now.

Surely others are now noticing this narrative that states the Huns were the better team in any game that we didn’t’ beat them by 4 or 5 goals. The very same thing happened in may when they had 30% possession in the cup final.

In both cup finals there was only ever one team playing football ..only one team trying to go and win the game! Having played football for years, I’d say it is almost impossible to be the better team if you are consistently only having the ball for 30% of the time.

Not sure how far back you would need to go to find the last time they outplayed us, but I know it wasn’t in either of the last 2 cup finals!

Very interesting comment — passed me by totally.

If BR is not a day to day manager now then he is turning more and more into MON Mk2.
MON had a very good team behind him to the point that Robbo was the real brains in the combo.

BR made it through hard work / detail / energy. — a 10 hour day was an early finish.
So a bit surprised at the comment — hopefully the new coaching bloke has it all in hand.

Interesting times — especially if there ia contract extension on the go?

Final thought — MON / back in the day …
There was a lot of media chat / paper talk about the contract he was on with us.
From memory it was a one year rolling contract and media comment was made about it not showing much commitment on either side if this arrangement was allowed to continue. The fans needed better.

Really detailed / pointed stuff in the media about this — ongoing for a while.
It was almost as if they had a direct connection into the inner workings of the club.

And then I remembered the time of all this paper talk / media chat.
Prime time media phone blagging / phone hacking.

Were the media hacking phones around the club to get whatever juicy gossip they could?
Given SDM’s modus operandi / media connections you have to wonder.

I mention SDM because of his media links and the rumours that he was using innovative methods to work out the valuations of SPL players he — and we — were interested in back in the mid 90’s.

Celtic should release a statement (Alongside a video listing the ridiculous amount of decisions we have had to take on the chin ©T. Mowbray) stating we would also like a big change to the way refereeing is done in Scotland.

Make it known we would be more than happy to see refs brought in from outside our own referees association. The huns believe we are being favoured in these games and consistently getting decisions that affect the outcome of tight matches? Been saying this for years now.
Surely others are now noticing this narrative that states the Huns were the better team in any game that we didn’t’ beat them by 4 or 5 goals. The very same thing happened in may when they had 30% possession in the cup final.
—————

I get completely get that.
Only thing is they deliberately booted everything long to give our back 4 possession. They then pressed to recover the ball high up. They were rewarded with 2 goals and a 4 v 1 situation that they messed up big time.
I suppose they don’t have much in way of strengths so played to our weaknesses.

Latest article in the DR has the header:

“SFA tell Rangers ‘we got it wrong’ as Hampden chief breaks silence on penalty storm”

Then you go down a few paragraphs:

“reports overnight suggested the SFA have internally accepted a mistake was made ”

So you don’t actually have a direct comment other than Maxwell saying human error can happen anywhere 🤔

Bobby,

You can usually tell what a person was trying to say.

Definitely not today though! 😊

FB,

It gets funnier with each passing game.

Keeping the score down has become we were the better team.

Pretty soon we’ll be getting told how they dominated but were just extremely unlucky to lose.

It seems to have stemmed from their managers trying to bend reality out of desperation to convince the Huns that they are not to blame for them losing, or that they are about to bridge the chasm between the clubs (Next time we’ll definitely beat them!)

Remember Gerrard telling them the league would look totally different if only games lasted 80mins? Or big Clementaefuk with his “We nearly had as many shots as them”? 😁 Anything but admit they are just not in our league.

Me and the wee guy really look forward to big Phil’s weekend excuse lottery, we even have bets on what he will come up with next.

I’ll tell you one thing I do know, i’ll be gutted when he goes!

Said it before. We could’ve hammered them.
Brendan played a blinder. Kept it close to keep him in a job.

I’d like to see someone put together a video of all Goldson’s hand balls …just him will suffice.

Add in them getting penalties when the ref isn’t even looking at the play.

Penalties we should have got at Ibrox for tackles on …feck, take your pick! (Remember their laughter as Lenny went tonto at not getting a blatant penalty decision?)

Or Clint Hill trying to rearrange Griffiths with a waist high challenge just as he was about to net and win us the game.

I’ll bet any money Brendan remembers that one.

Hartson being wrongly called offside v thems at Hampden.

Or how about some of the red cards we’ve been given against them? Ask Broony about that!

Them and their media chums have got a brass neck.

Nae Penalty Tae Rangers.

The Scottish Football Association have accepted Rangers were denied a crucial penalty kick in Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final defeat against Celtic at Hampden.
The Scotsman understands that during a discussion between new Ibrox chief executive Patrick Stewart and Willie Collum, SFA Head of Referee Operations, it was admitted that a mistake was made when VAR officials failed to alert referee John Beaton that Celtic centre-half Liam Scales’ tug on Rangers winger Vaclav Cerny’s jersey occurred on the line, rather than just outside the box. Instead of giving a penalty. Beaton awarded a foul just outside the box from which James Tavernier shot over the bar.

In a subsequent interview with SFA Head of Referee Operations, Willie Collum, he explained that he thought he was being interviewed by Harry Hill for the TV programme You’ve Been Framed and was only trying to gain £250 .

It’s all deflection , and as many people have said , call their bluff on Refereeing standards.
Maybe Captain Picard just wanted to introduce 🤝 himself to the brethren at Hampden/ Park Gardens 🤷🏻‍♂️

Way back in the late 80’s and early 90’s, when we were on the road to oblivion, and they were on the road to 9IAR, we still managed a few league and cup wins against them. I don’t remember much talk about the gap is closing, after our victories. They had the stronger squad and more cash.

We would enjoy the bragging rights for a few days and then a look at the league table would see us among the also-rans. In 89-90 we finished fifth. The depressing reality really is a bitch.

As we approach the end of 2024, our domination is pretty much as absolute as it can be. A teenage R2ngers fan would need to look up the meaning of the term bragging rights. Ask your dad or grandad son. Your cousins probably support Celtic, so they can tell you.

A narrow defeat, throw in a non-penalty decision, and hey presto, the gap is closing, the Gers are back.

Yes, the Gers are back, 11 points back last time I looked. Call it 12 with the goal difference.

BMCUWPS,

I haven’t seen much of Miller, I hope he is as good as reports.

Few seem to comment on the commitment level required at CL level.

How did the EPL sides involved in the CL get on last weekend? Arteta tried to reassure his players last week by telling them, “It’s just another game.” It’s not it’s the whole psychological demand of playing at the top level.

Our points tally over the last couple of months, clean sheets and a domestic trophy is first rate.

The EL is on a different level.

If the other lot had achieved anything like that, GCC would have them into the City Chambers.Same old sour grapes and deflection. Plenty of Castore gear to shift before Christmas.

We also saw our right back extend his contract.

That’s a bit of a surprise given one contributors insistance that it’s an unhappy camp.

This is the same guy who told us that Dermot is desperate to sell and the Board were terrified of Ange’s ‘growth agenda.’

Normal service returns at the weekend.

Plenty of football to be played before we silence GCC’s beer tent at Ibrox.

The Cadete offside which probably guaranteed the nine? One of the worst decisions ever.

Bobby,

I would think we could all come up with a list of our own.

With a fair possibility that all the lists could be totally different.

They may well be able to come up with a couple of contentious decisions.

We have a back catalogue that covers all of our lifetimes.

I bet your dad could tell us about ones that happened long before social media and the amount of scrutiny there is now.

Just reading back yesterday’s later blog posts. Thanks for the assistance with Craig76’s graphic. Now why didn’t I think of that?🤔

My thoughts are at Linn Crematorium today. RIP SFTB.
