Never Give A Sucker An Even Break

Morning,all.

There’s no doubt at all about the importance of today’s game at Ibrox, is there? We go into the game a whopping FOURTEEN points ahead after only eighteen games. If we can come out of that with a win which will see us seventeen points ahead at our halfway stage, we can certainly be thought to have a commanding lead in the title race.

Projecting that to the full 38 game season would mean finishing 34 points clear, but even that is largely irrelevant. After all, we finished 39 points ahead only eight seasons ago. It would hardly be uncharted territory. But never mind us, think of the effect a lead like that would have on the hordes across the city? They are already revolting (I know. I know.) and a right good doing might just tip them over the edge. Which is a pleasant thought. And a trip to Easter Road on Sunday to face a Hibs side which is finally starting to get results would not be a pleasant prospect for them. So the question is, do we drive another nail into their coffin today, or do we go easy on them? (Holds onion to eye.)

Football is a strange business. In most businesses, the object of the exercise is to provide a product which is so popular with the customers that it drives your competitors out of business altogether. Because then you can hoover up most if not all of those customers too, strengthening your own company to enable you to drive even more competitors out of business. You get my drift. The goal is monopoly, in effect. Football though is codependent, meaning there has to be some competition there to allow your company to win. The goal in football is for a loyal and growing fanbase which will allow you to be up there when the trophies are won, because doing so ensures the loyalty and growth of that fanbase. It’s why the likes of Liverpool have such huge numbers of fans which leads to more sponsorship income which gives them more money to spend so the team can win more trophies and attract more fans. And so the cycle continues-unless the wheels come off, like at Man Utd at the moment. Clubs would cry if there were no worlds left to conquer-because they had driven the competition to the wall. In a business sense, it makes no sense at all. But in a football sense, it makes all the sense in the world.

But there is one golden rule of business which applies at all times, and it doesn’t matter which business you are in either. Never give a sucker an even break. It is in our hands today, we have a chance to deliver a blow to our most loathed rivals from which they could take an age to recover. And in those hands we hold most of the cards.

We are going into the game with a full squad. One which has had little more than the most minor of hiccups all season, if we ignore a horrible night in Dortmund! One which only lost two games in the whole of the calendar year just ended-and we were bloody cheated at Tynecastle as we know. We have a manager who is completely trusted by his own bosses, his players and the fans, a man in total control of his destiny.

R2ngers on the other hand?

They have real problems. Igamame up front is their only striker in any decent form, and he is very hit and miss. Let’s hope for the latter today. Cerny is struggling due to too much game time. Danilo and Dessers are just struggling. In midfield, they can rely for a while on the thuggery of Raskin and Barron, while Hagi will flatter to deceive while fading completely the minute he gets a dull one from AJ or CCV. At the back, they are in all sorts of disarray.

Butland is out, and likely to be for a while. As is Tavernier. Souttar is still absent, while Balogun is more reliant on his zimmer frame by the day and is carrying an injury. Castlewirock (a wee reminder of home for SOLKITTS) is still absent from the left back role, and Yilmaz has the same problem with too many minutes as Cerny. These are not the kind of issues anyone wants going into a must-win match against runaway leaders in any country. And least of all in Scotland.

So do you want my prediction for the day ahead? Well, only a fool predicts the out come of an O** F*** game (said Jock) so you won’t get one from me, I’m afraid. I’ve just explained though how we hold all the cards going into the match, and the selection problems facing Clement (who can’t even consult his sports science team, cos they are in the huff!) I’ve told you why the game is important to us, but I’ve also explained why it is more important to them. They’re my only concern.

What dark arts will be conjured up to enable a R2ngers victory, one which will give them the boost of reducing the gap to a measly eleven? Will the kick off time of 3pm on a public holiday in front of a 100% hostile and probably pissed up support (hardly helped by selling beer in marquees outside the ground, btw) endanger our playing and coaching staff? Will the officials be entirely faithful to their chosen profession?

There are still some factors which can come into play on the day, totally unique to the occasion. But I’ll end as I started, which is how I hope we approach the game and deal with all the above. Never give a sucker an even break.

One of the good things about Canada is that it’s not America. Although tbh trying to get into Canada from America can be difficult sometimes. I’ve always been pulled up. All 18 times. Something to do with my real name and a serial killer in Quebec. Pointing it out to the immigration officers that I’m the 5th name on their list on their computer screen after seeing them struggling for 5 minutes never goes down well

Auldheid as said about time..
“A statement from the Parkhead club reads: “We understand that Police Scotland are currently investigating 2 separate incidents. The repeated targeting of our players and staff with missiles is quite appalling and completely unacceptable.”

Great I was only responding to a behind closed door route being needless or worthless that Celtic have taken in the past succesfully eg FSR and later mentioned the protocol that should apply.

Great they followed protocol and that enabled that statement.

It’s important that matters are taken forward correctly to avoid dismissal.

We understand that Police Scotland are currently investigating two separate incidents.
“The repeated targeting of our players and staff with missiles is quite appalling and completely unacceptable.”

I doubt that, however I’ll take your word for it.

They can see though, surely?

When they told people not to believe what their own eyes were seeing – that was it, game over.

Not arguing with ye, just adding perspective.

well if you earn more than $300k/year your additive tax bracket drops
I know that doesn’t mean much but in the arithmetic world it’s a bonanza

I really hope someone asks Brendan these 3 questions at his next presser, but I have no hopes of it.

”Brendan, from the first minute, your midfield were outnumbered 4 to 3, and eventually overwhelmed. Why did you not to anything to respond to that situation?”

”Brendan, after an initial burst from Maeda, both wingers were completely neutralized by the Rangers fullbacks. Why did you not do anything in response?”

”Brendan, the 4-3-3 formation was completely ineffective on Thursday. Why did you not try another option?”

If any of your opinion is remotely true, I’m afraid that I will have to give it all up and I mean everything.
Where was this conspiracy in the 90s to 2012?
We just let them win,did they not get told to rein it in?
So the establishment team has to appear to be progressive?

====
I know but having had 11 years to reflect over Celtic”s actions, failure to strengthen from a position of strength, the codependency with Rangers etc it is a possibility that cannot be dismissed no matter how unthinkable it is.

In 2011 when Celtic would have known of Rangers plight is when the save them at our own expense idea surfaced.

It probably began in 2009 when we lost a title well within our grasp after a LC victory over Rangers at Ibrox.
The performances that followed were well short of that day.
It is an idea I thought preposterous I’m not so sure now.
However based on today I go for the hungrier more competive desperate team won. The less desperate team lost.

They played like they were starving, we played like we had overindulged at a banquet.

Just watched 2 Brendan post game pressers, one on the field, and one in the Sevco media room. He did not admit any fault at all for his selection, substitutes, formation or tactics.
Funny that.

Just read this stat on the game. Sevco’s reserve left back, playing Right back against Maeda, had SIX shots on our goal. Celtic had FOUR attempts at Kelly.
Says it all, really. Truly pitiful.

INIQUITOUS IV – Been saying it for months.

It’s psychological.

Our manager is doing my funking head in.

We were under zero pressure, going into that game.

He point blank refused to alter the set-up.

Could have tried any, alternative system/formation.

A myriad of options.

Went, not even predictable but guaranteed.

Nothing surprising, nothing different.

Same oul line up, irrespective of where we are,or who we are facing.

Crazy it is.

Nothing is guaranteed.

Speaking hypotheticaly here – say we qualify for the next stage of the CL – draw against one of the giant clubs, away leg first, right..

What system) formation is our manager going to try to implement?

4-3-3?

You’d better believe it.

It would be a team effort where Rod McKenzie of Harper McLeod SPL lawyers, Doncaster SPL CEO with legal background and individuals with a knowledge of football rules and politics which PL had but denies sight of the 5WA, who would be involved.

There is no hard evidence PL or anyone at Celtic was involved (an answer to the full AGM question posed in full that PL did not responded to.)

I base .my belief about legal involvement on this e mail

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZolHhKAL8KDY_bU1hqrQwlJgqVy4zRqU/view?usp=drivesdk

that both McKenzie and Donaster were named in.

It is dated Oct 2011 4 months before Rangers entered administration.

Interestingly enough McKenzie represented the SPL on the LNS Commision and advised the SPL Board including Eric Reily of Celtic although he was not contactable to hear final SPL decision based on McKenzie advice on appealing or not the LNS Decision.

I think Harper McLeod drafted the LNS Terms of Reference around the player registration rules that LNS was asked to judge on based on testimony from the SFA registration officer Sandy Bryson..Funny that.

From Oct 2011 to July 2012 gave plenty of time to think of a strategy to deal with Rangers insolvency and how to implement it.

For information purposes only just dots to note and join to get a more detailed picture.

When the interdependency of football and requirement for competition form dots to join then an understandable picture of the need for the 5WA as those governing the game see it emerges.

That does not excuse the form the 5WA took, just sets out wider factors involved

It is why I hate the fixture it brings out the worst in us.

Just Sayin’
January 3, 2025 3:49 am

Some pitiful exchanges/ bitter recriminations reading back.
Too much unnecessary sound and fury.

We were out gunned by a fired up opponent, whose work rate fazed us and whose limited creativity was aided by multiple assists from us.

It happens, but rarely on that scale of culpability. We gave the hordes in the stands huge encouragement to support their team and that seemed to unsettle us too.

What is totally unacceptable is the nature of the abject defeat. A dreadful first half was topped by an even worse second 45.
The game was crying out for half time changes but remarkably BR decided the same hapless 11 should continue, when at least two replacements were called for to bring some sort of composure to a ragged performance – to inject a semblance of belief that at 0-1 the game was not a foregone conclusion.
To see the usual suspects emerge was enough to convince me that there was no game plan.

Only one player got pass marks in my opinion and even he was miles behind the worst of anyone in blue.

A collective failure of epic proportions.

We have 5 games to get it sorted before the real pivot point in our season.

We cannot bring that level of performance onto the pitch on Jan 22nd.
Failure to reach the CL knockout stages could have a hugely detrimental psychological impact on the rest of our season.
