(Double) Normal service resumed
Celtic win at home, R2ngers drop points away, I suppose that’s just the way of the world these days, and as such yesterday’s set of results cannot be considered abnormal.
I had egg on my face reading the team selection, Brendan did indeed make some statements and several of Thursdays starters found themselves on the bench, which is a lot wiser than singling out just the one name. The weather had some impact as the stadium saw more empty seats than usual, but I was happily in my chair awaiting kickoff rather than the usual 5 or 10 late.
That proved somewhat fateful.
Within 60 seconds I was absolutely furious and yelling for a red card to be produced.
A deliberate foul prevented a goal scoring opportunity, the textbook professional foul, and the non decision was later compounded by the fact it was exactly Maeda and Kuhn who linked up for the opener.
Frazer was getting skinned, there’s no one alive could doubt Maeda outpaces him over half a pitch, and once it goes 2 on 1 the odds of bulging the net dramatically increase.
Now the ref had a get-out clause, he wasn’t the last man, so I begrudgingly accept there will be no dismissal, but not even a yellow was already taking the biscuit and the game had barely started.
The current rules of football failed us on the day, and if that’s the case it needs modified. You can stop a goal chance if your mates close enough, but not by yourself? Wait a minute, stopping a goal chance fullstop ought to be deemed a professional foul with an automatic red as a consequence.
If anyone caught the Spurs news, they were victims of rulebook technicality after an obvious handball was allowed due to the phase of play.
A handball should be a bloody handball, a foul with no discussion. At least twice in one weekend the current rules weren’t fit for purpose, and thats plain evidence that the reality on the pitch isn’t always matched by the guidelines. Over to you UEFA.
Despite the above, the first ten minutes were enjoyable, Callums rousing huddle speech had worked and Celtic played with intent, I counted 4 chances created, witnessed a good tempo, and a much better attitude. There was a clear instruction to up the number of crosses, sensible with Adam on the pitch, sensible overall although I personally wanted some shots from distance also. Everything seemed rosey enough, but that early momentum peetered out, we became lethargic and content with meaningless possession to the extent that the 30 minute mark was greeted by a chorus of boo’s from those (rightfully) wishing a better afternoon’s entertainment.
I felt we were missing Kyogo, he loves getting on the end of crosses, Adam wasn’t getting on the end of much at all.
I would like to say these boo’s sparked the team into life which resulted in our opening goal minutes later, but the truth is having our wingers unleashed on a quick break results in a goal the majority of times, this was simply another such occasion. Kuhn and Maeda compliment each other, both must be delighted with the others attributes, it should have been their second successful combination but we all gladly accepted this legitimate opener.
The scene was set, around 60 minutes of turning the screw, bombarding them late-on with benched players carrying a point to prove, and we did turn the screw just before halftime when one of our very dangerous corners was turned home for a first ever goal by Trusty. Despite not being the greatest game, our delivery had been top drawer, at one stage I thought Arne was about to score direct from a corner, a set piece goal and a first for Big Austin was a pleasing way to end the half and set up a second 45 full of further intrigue.
Although we marched down the tunnel 2 goals to the better we were clearly losing out in one certain area, the art of timewasting. They were embarrassing, it was absolutely cringe worthy, and the latest donkey off the SPL production line clearly had no inclination to deal with the unsavoury issue.
As myself and tens of thousands other settled back down for the second half, the unthinkable happened.
And that’s where this match report ends, most Tims (there’s more outside the stadium than inside) didn’t get to see the 2nd half as the biggest blackout since the Blitz just happened to hit that particular grid at that particular time.
I’ve a couple of points to make on the issue.
Yes, it happens.
And believe it or not I’m well familiar with that occurrence, the sudden loss of power followed seconds later by the backup generator kicking in and restoring normality.
I don’t want to go over the top here, but the safety assured by such back-up generators is priceless, and I’ll go a step further and congratulate whoever is responsible for the mandate, whether SPL or UEFA or just plain old government legislation.
Going to a game should never be dangerous, 50 thousand scrambling in the dark cannot help but be dangerous.
I brought up two fouls earlier, last week Scotland’s top flight delivered two safety issues. One each for the nation’s biggest teams, very different but still falling under Health and Safety.
If that pound coin was an inch higher Arne Engels career could be in the balance and Celtic can kiss foreign talent goodbye,,Hampden and Ibrox clearly failed their live safety test last week.
Celtic clearly passed theirs with an A+.
You might find that meaningless rambling and I admit I had never even thought of what happens when that whole area loses power, and I never imagined it would be during a game, but as someone who has friends and family in the stadium it was reassuring to find out elsewhere on social media that (double) normal service had been resumed within seconds at Parkhead even though the majority of Tims lost 45 minutes of football missing out on the 3rd goal as CelticTV and all the other bahooky sites got scrambled. Small beans in the grand scheme of things, but we weren’t looking like losing from the half of football we got.
Big Hamish was happy with his earlier than planned walk because after 20 minutes of refresh I just gave up.
It’s the first time in our site history we can only offer up a half game review, and we beg your understanding.
If the past week taught me anything, it’s that when I’m next in Scotland bringing my young daughter to Celtic Park for the first time is more likely given the ‘peace of mind’ the trip would involve given the fresh facts.
I’ll gladly lose 45 minutes of 44 legs kicking a piece of synthetic leather around to know my little girl and everyone else is safe when they enter our footballing home.
We bounced back on paper, we extended the lead at the top still into double digits, KT to sign,,the first month of the year might indeed end well.

So ‘allegedly’ Greg T spat the dummy oot because a small section of the support were vocally critical of their perception of his footballing abilities, and apparently some were singing about KT?
Don’t the support often sing about their favourites past and present? I seem to recall last season during a couple of home games the north curve singing in praise of Henke, can’t recall Kyogo being overly miffed.
The support pay both Taylor and BR’s wages, something they should be mindful of. As we are oft told football is a business and as we the support are oft reminded we are mere cash cows and are ‘fleeced’ at every opportunity be that from zillions of extortionately priced cheaply made kits released each season or a lack of basic amenities in the wash rooms, hot water, for which you pay premium prices for your ST. Well if football is a business (unless of course when they are after your cash and start the ‘its your club’ rhetoric) then we the customer are never wrong. If Taylor wants to leave, and i for one hope he does, then good luck to him and hope the door doesn’t hit him in the ass as his top tier football career ends as he leaves Celtic Park. Brendan should think very very carefully before speaking out against the support in future.

So Rodgers looking for appreciation for the job he is currently doing, and responds by insulting supporters in return?
Hardly the best way to keep appreciation intact?
Insulting may be a harsh word to be using?
But when you send out a team in the manner that he did, done nothing whatsoever to rectify the situation, then deserved huge criticism was warranted towards himself imo?
Would you regard such a performance as an insult to our jersey?
I personally would.
Yet if the game didn’t matter in terms of result, then try something totally different regarding shape of the team, and a 3 goals defeat, would possibly be have treated totally differently?
But no, decides to attack our supporters footballing intelligence?
We raise opinions on platforms such as this, and that’s all they are.
Yet the decision maker is Rodgers himself, and our support remains intact, regardless of the decisions Rodgers makes?
Is that a form of insult to ourselves in return?
Maybe he wants to set out the rules of what we are allowed to discuss regarding our team now?
We knew what we were buying into regarding the return of Rodgers, and was all for it personally.
Also was expecting a drop off in entertainment value, with a better return at CL level, and keeping our superiority in Scottish football intact.
So Rodgers is matching the requirements within our support, and in return has kept the anti Rodgers brigade very quiet within our support thankfully.
Yet I find it very strange that Rodgers decides to act in an insulting manner, towards our support in the last 2 games?
Rodgers is far from a stupid man, very calculated in how he generally would act and say.
Could maybe be regarded as out of character for Rodgers?
Wouldn’t think so myself, as potentially something far more sinister going on within him at present imo?
Guessing game maybe in place as to what that might be now, and wouldn’t class it as good management whatsoever either?

O.K. Now for some more Papal Bull. I was a wee bit puzzled at Brendan’s crabbit presser yesterday, because there’s one thing sure – he does very few things spontaneously. He is a smart, calculating guy. Slagging the support, many who travel long distances, sit in the cold, pay exorbitant sums for cheap merchandize, and have followed Celtic for decades, is not a savvy thing to do. Doing it so soon after an abject humiliation at the Bigotdome, with a paralyzed coaching response to unfolding events, then not taking into account these same fans watching St. Mirren players blatantly wasting time, a referee ignoring the basic rules of the game, then 30 minutes of torpid horseshoe passing with no attempts at goal, is even less savvy. Saying, “If you know the game” is frankly insulting. There were plenty Celtic fans with coaching licences having a wee moan at what was frankly torpid football.
I am not arrogant enough to think I know better than Brendan. I have never managed a professional football team. He might argue, “We won 3-0, we got 3 points, we are 13 points clear. What are you moaning about?” And he would definitely have a point. My own CSC members say it to me. But I definitely think he could have handled that presser better. If he had said, “ Come on guys, give us more vocal encouragement at the start of games when we are searching for an opening. It will definitely help the team.” Taking some personal responsibility for the total failure last Thursday would have helped as well.

Well said Oglach, in every game fans sing on the 67th minute about the Lisbon Lions, is this disrespectful to the current team ? No it’s not, and a few singing about KT is understandable as Celtic leaked it, and BR was photographed in London not too long ago with Kieran, they have a right to sing about KT as fans have a certain affiliation to a home grown boy, and I for one feel the singing was not meant to be disrespectful at all to GT.
I could understand it if they were singing GT ..GTF which wasn’t the case, I personally believe BR’s ego was bruised with the Sevco shit show where our team capitulated. I also think his ‘defense’ of GT was very clumsy comparing him to many Celtic players (past and present) who could not cut it in the Champions league, this has put undue pressure on GT.
BR’s presser yesterday was reminiscent of WGS telling us that supporters know fekk all about football, it’s clumsy and insulting. I also believe personally that we won’t get KT until the summer hence his backing of GT.
I make no pretense of being a fan of GT, he does appear to give his all in games, but as supporters we want the very best for Celtic and Greg does have several limitations, that most have been crying out to have resolved for years, if BR is dead set on keeping him, he should be at odds with the board to get a deal done, not the support.

With regards to BR comments on support.
Support should require standing by a person (or team) at times when they require your help, assistance and advice. Often to carry them through difficult and uncertain times. It’s generally unwavering and in many cases given and taken for granted through shared experiences.
In the past 30 years Celtic fans for example, have shown support by saving their club from extinction, buying shares in record numbers, purchasing season books , replica kits, merchandise and investing during lockdowns. Throw in charity drives, food banks, and numerous cultural events organised by said support and club and you get to see a wider picture of the various lengths said supporters- many who have experienced real poverty- go to.
Support does not mean leaving that person or team midway through a relationship at the first flash of the EPLs frilly knickers.

All I have done is set out an alternative view of BR’s reasons for saying what he did based on how I managed in many different roles in later years as a fixer of problems.
If his motives are to throw the OF game in the manner we did in order to make fans angry so that he could then insult them as part of a cunning plan to engineer getting out then he is the calculating son of a bitch you suspect him to be.
If he does go to another job you will be right.
If he stays and brings more success as a result of defending his team from criticism from supporters who do not know how to manage professional footballers but think they know better yet call him arrogant and he gets the support behind him by providing what the vast majority want him to deliver i.e a club that can hold its own at UEFA CL level you will be wrong.
I’m not suggesting I am wrong and you are right, I don’t do that kind of ego trip Im only saying two possibilities exist and we’ll see which one turns up.
Perhaps the following we story will explain my approach.
Two men live side by side in semis and share a back garden. A fence divides the gardens. It is dark green on one side and light green on the other. Mr Dark Green thinks the fence is all dark green. Mr Light Green thinks it is all light green. It is only when they talk and Mr Dark Green invites Mr Light Green in to his garden that they discover the truth that the fence is dark green on one side and light green on the other. As a result of sharing they are more enlightened than when they ignored each other.
I included that in a E Tims article that must be over 10 years old so take that into account about improving communication and on re reading it the final message stays the same. Until some form of trust is restored (which BR asked for) the Board and Support are doomed to remain separate and a house divided will fail.
It would be great if just one reader of this comment here read
E tims Time to Talk.doc – Google Docs
think about the message and say if it makes sense or not.

Good afternoon, friends.
After last Thursday’s game you might (or more likely might not) have noticed that I didn’t issue any reminders for the old voting thing. IN the end I was very relieved that 49 did email me, even though that was well below this season’s average which currently sits at 74. I realise there were second half problems yesterday for those not at Celtic Park but the numbers currently remain low with only 41 emails received. The polls are open for another 4 hours so hoping for an early evening surge 😉 SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM

Most important player?

Does paying their wages buy their soul or humanity or make them immune to criticism.
If they react to unbalanced criticism that ignores what they are good at (as BR acknowledges) and focusses on what they are not so good at did the support pay for them not to react as a supporter might in similar circumstances and defend themselves?
Players do not stop being human when they pull on the hoops for a wage.
The pay is to buy their football ability in hope it makes supporters happy not to demand they dance like puppets to the views of those providing a wage.
The trick is to get a happy player who feels appreciated for giving of his best and that is done by looking for his best in the interest of balance.

Records broken by Phillipe Clement:
– Ross County had never beaten Rangers in their entire 96 year existence, until they met Phillipe Clement.
– Motherwell had not won a league game at Ibrox since 1997, until they met Phillipe Clement.
– Motherwell had not won a league game full stop against Rangers since 2002, until they met Phillipe Clement.
– Rangers had never lost to Portuguese opposition in their entire history, until Benfica met Phillipe Clement.
– Dynamo Kyiv had not won a competitive game on British soil since 1967, routine 2-0 win when they met Phillipe Clement.
– Rangers had NEVER conceded 4 goals at Ibrox in the UEFA Cup/Europa League. A 54 year record. 1-4 trouncing from Lyon when they met Phillipe Clement.
– No Rangers manager since 1914 had failed to win six Old Firm games in a row, that was until Phillipe Clement.
Rangers have taken 12 points from a possible 30 away from home this season, our worst away start to a season in 19 years. Overseen of course by Phillipe Clement.
– Rangers were the most successful club in the country since 1975, that was until they met Phillipe Clement.
Compare Celtic fans’ innocuous singing about KT and no criticism of Greg Taylor with Scousers’ treatment of Alexander Arnold.

Following Sunday’s power outage in the wider Parkhead area of Glasgow that caused disruption to normal matchday services inside Celtic Park, the club has assessed the effect this had on Celtic TV’s Pay-Per-View broadcast of the game against St Mirren.
We acknowledge that, unfortunately, the power outage resulted in a loss of pictures and audio for part of the second half’s live coverage.
While the cause of the disruption was entirely outwith the control of the club, in light of these circumstances, Celtic will be reducing the previously advertised Pay-Per-View pricing by 50% for the forthcoming game against Dundee United at Celtic Park this Wednesday, January 8.
VISIT CELTIC TV
We hope that this discount will enable supporters who can’t make it to Celtic Park to enjoy the full game at home at a reduced price as a token of appreciation for your support on Sunday.
Celtic TV subscribers in the UK and Ireland will receive a discounted rate of £4.99, which will be automatically applied at checkout.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank you once again for your ongoing support and understanding related to this issue.

What I have heard, and what seems to make sense, is that PC was brought in with a remit of cutting costs. However, it turned out that the situation was much worse than even he had been told. He was given a contract extension in return for not bolting and burning the place down on his way out. I am also told that several of the head zombies have been impressed with his back room efforts to make changes – reduce costs. So dont see him going soon
If changes have to be made, and a new coach brought in, can see him being promoted internally. At least they are getting some benefit for his wages.

Or explain why he said what he said and ask support to trust his explanation.
Otherwise what is the point?
Its now all about trust and mistrust so an explanation has to be trust restoring BUT the audience has to be prepared forget or forgive recent or past grievances they hold and be prepared to listen judgement free and possibly decide to trust him.
My view is simple. If he said what he said to deliberately insult supporters then more than a big apology is needed, he crossed a line..
If what he said was not intended as an insult but some supporters took it as such then that meaning is down to them not BR.
BR in explaining his intent, if it happens, allows the audience the opportunity to accept his explanation as reasonable as in if they were in BR’s shoes would they have acted differently?
The one thing I do know for sure is that I have no idea what his intent was, I only think I know a reason must exist, so I’m not in either insulted or not insulted camp until I learn more.

Both are highly remunerated and let us be honest here if you can’t stand to be criticized in a well paid job that you know positions you as a potential subject for criticism from time to time and deservedly so in some instance then you are probably in the wrong job, why should footballers and managers be immune from a having a few home truths being pointed out? No one is demanding anyone dances like puppets. The Celtic support aren’t mugs either we know about tactics etc and certainly know when a player or manager isn’t performing. For the manager of the club to basically state we know heehaw about the game is frankly insulting, imho BR’s wee petulant outburst did nothing but heap more pressure on Taylor as well as insuring that his own standing within the support took a battering.
Can you remember one of Lenny’s 1st games playing for Celtic, it was during a home euro tie. Lenny receives the ball in midfield looks around for a forward pass but decides to pass it back. It seemed the whole of Celtic park started shouting at him for making a backward pass so much so that Lenny had a look of bewilderment on his face. Anywho – Lenny didn’t spit the dummy out and MO’N certainly didn’t have a petulant rant about the supporters not knowing the game. If i remember correctly the only person the SMSM could find to condemn the support was Lenny’s Dad.
