(Double) Normal service resumed

Celtic win at home, R2ngers drop points away, I suppose that’s just the way of the world these days, and as such yesterday’s set of results cannot be considered abnormal.

I had egg on my face reading the team selection, Brendan did indeed make some statements and several of Thursdays starters found themselves on the bench, which is a lot wiser than singling out just the one name. The weather had some impact as the stadium saw more empty seats than usual, but I was happily in my chair awaiting kickoff rather than the usual 5 or 10 late.
That proved somewhat fateful.

Within 60 seconds I was absolutely furious and yelling for a red card to be produced.
A deliberate foul prevented a goal scoring opportunity, the textbook professional foul, and the non decision was later compounded by the fact it was exactly Maeda and Kuhn who linked up for the opener.
Frazer was getting skinned, there’s no one alive could doubt Maeda outpaces him over half a pitch, and once it goes 2 on 1 the odds of bulging the net dramatically increase.
Now the ref had a get-out clause, he wasn’t the last man, so I begrudgingly accept there will be no dismissal, but not even a yellow was already taking the biscuit and the game had barely started.

The current rules of football failed us on the day, and if that’s the case it needs modified. You can stop a goal chance if your mates close enough, but not by yourself? Wait a minute, stopping a goal chance fullstop ought to be deemed a professional foul with an automatic red as a consequence.
If anyone caught the Spurs news, they were victims of rulebook technicality after an obvious handball was allowed due to the phase of play.
A handball should be a bloody handball, a foul with no discussion. At least twice in one weekend the current rules weren’t fit for purpose, and thats plain evidence that the reality on the pitch isn’t always matched by the guidelines. Over to you UEFA.

Despite the above, the first ten minutes were enjoyable, Callums rousing huddle speech had worked and Celtic played with intent, I counted 4 chances created, witnessed a good tempo, and a much better attitude. There was a clear instruction to up the number of crosses, sensible with Adam on the pitch, sensible overall although I personally wanted some shots from distance also. Everything seemed rosey enough, but that early momentum peetered out, we became lethargic and content with meaningless possession to the extent that the 30 minute mark was greeted by a chorus of boo’s from those (rightfully) wishing a better afternoon’s entertainment.
I felt we were missing Kyogo, he loves getting on the end of crosses, Adam wasn’t getting on the end of much at all.

I would like to say these boo’s sparked the team into life which resulted in our opening goal minutes later, but the truth is having our wingers unleashed on a quick break results in a goal the majority of times, this was simply another such occasion. Kuhn and Maeda compliment each other, both must be delighted with the others attributes, it should have been their second successful combination but we all gladly accepted this legitimate opener.

The scene was set, around 60 minutes of turning the screw, bombarding them late-on with benched players carrying a point to prove, and we did turn the screw just before halftime when one of our very dangerous corners was turned home for a first ever goal by Trusty. Despite not being the greatest game, our delivery had been top drawer, at one stage I thought Arne was about to score direct from a corner, a set piece goal and a first for Big Austin was a pleasing way to end the half and set up a second 45 full of further intrigue.

Although we marched down the tunnel 2 goals to the better we were clearly losing out in one certain area, the art of timewasting. They were embarrassing, it was absolutely cringe worthy, and the latest donkey off the SPL production line clearly had no inclination to deal with the unsavoury issue.

As myself and tens of thousands other settled back down for the second half, the unthinkable happened.

And that’s where this match report ends, most Tims (there’s more outside the stadium than inside) didn’t get to see the 2nd half as the biggest blackout since the Blitz just happened to hit that particular grid at that particular time.
I’ve a couple of points to make on the issue.
Yes, it happens.
And believe it or not I’m well familiar with that occurrence, the sudden loss of power followed seconds later by the backup generator kicking in and restoring normality.

I don’t want to go over the top here, but the safety assured by such back-up generators is priceless, and I’ll go a step further and congratulate whoever is responsible for the mandate, whether SPL or UEFA or just plain old government legislation.
Going to a game should never be dangerous, 50 thousand scrambling in the dark cannot help but be dangerous.

I brought up two fouls earlier, last week Scotland’s top flight delivered two safety issues. One each for the nation’s biggest teams, very different but still falling under Health and Safety.
If that pound coin was an inch higher Arne Engels career could be in the balance and Celtic can kiss foreign talent goodbye,,Hampden and Ibrox clearly failed their live safety test last week.
Celtic clearly passed theirs with an A+.

You might find that meaningless rambling and I admit I had never even thought of what happens when that whole area loses power, and I never imagined it would be during a game, but as someone who has friends and family in the stadium it was reassuring to find out elsewhere on social media that (double) normal service had been resumed within seconds at Parkhead even though the majority of Tims lost 45 minutes of football missing out on the 3rd goal as CelticTV and all the other bahooky sites got scrambled. Small beans in the grand scheme of things, but we weren’t looking like losing from the half of football we got.
Big Hamish was happy with his earlier than planned walk because after 20 minutes of refresh I just gave up.

It’s the first time in our site history we can only offer up a half game review, and we beg your understanding.
If the past week taught me anything, it’s that when I’m next in Scotland bringing my young daughter to Celtic Park for the first time is more likely given the ‘peace of mind’ the trip would involve given the fresh facts.
I’ll gladly lose 45 minutes of 44 legs kicking a piece of synthetic leather around to know my little girl and everyone else is safe when they enter our footballing home.

We bounced back on paper, we extended the lead at the top still into double digits, KT to sign,,the first month of the year might indeed end well.

If you’re expecting answers to who is right and who is wrong regarding Rodgers actions, then possibly in for a long wait, without resolution.

This contract saga regarding Taylor, has been ongoing for months now, and certainly not buying into Rodgers claims that he doesn’t know of what Taylor intentions are?
Part of his job is to know, regarding the good for our club, not only in the here and now, but for the greater good also, regarding the contract?

Yet 2 games on the trot now, Taylor has taken a huff?
Couldn’t have been any Celtic supporter at that shithole, but was it at Rodgers decision to sub him off?
Couldn’t disagree with Taylor reactions, as many players could and should have been subbed off before Taylor imo?
Yet could be Taylor reactions be classed as disrespectful towards his manager?

Yet Rodgers used the word disrespectful regarding our support towards the same player, after his actions towards him?
Now how does that make any sense whatsoever, no matter what the colour of the fence is?

As from a tactical point of view regarding Taylor?
Rodgers seems to prefer Taylor in the inverted role, same as Ange introduced.
Think it’s fair to say that it worked out better for Taylor under Ange than currently under Rodgers imo?
Regardless, within the inverted role, it’s still can be regarded as a creative position, yet lacks creativity really in an attacking sense for ourselves to date this season?

So even in most starting line-up for ourselves, Taylor would possibly be regarded as the least influential player within our team.
Not a criticism, but has a role to play, which is important but hardly will dictate the outcome of a game for ourselves either?
Done so at the sheep in a very valuable victory, but not on to many occasions either this season?
So would it be natural enough for Rodgers to be potentially looking at a better ball player within an influential position, in how he sets the team up?
Personally think so, and if Rodgers intends to address that situation, then would totally agree with his decision?
If Taylor wants to continue to throw the toys out of the pram, then don’t bother blaming supporters for it happening?

But this issue is still currently in play, with another home game on Wednesday?
So should Rodgers start Taylor?
Personally don’t think Taylor head is in the right position to do currently imo?
Yet if Rodgers decides otherwise, then expect as always Taylor will get our full backing, regardless of what Rodgers has stirred up

A point brought up on SSB that lines up with my thinking in general on judgements based on incomplete information/evidence is that we do not know what took place in the dressing room post match and if BR wanted to keep him an angry GT was unlikely to stay as not feeling appreciated.

The point is there is often an unknown that were it to become known changes the opinion arrived at. Always leave room for the unknown to emerge, never be certain.

Under Ange,GT stuck to the left side. This encouraged Maeda to hit the line after a pass from GT,or vice versa. Now,GT is all over the pitch, which means that Maeda is out there on his own. And since he obviously feels more comfortable cutting inside when he is on the ball, the cutbacks aren’t happening anymore.

Same on the other side. Kühn has had a terrific season, but rarely hits the line either. In fact,AJ does it more often. That, imo,is why Kyogo is struggling so much.

Speculation about what goes on within their club, has always been within the DNA of a supporter, regardless of the club.
The actual truth is very rarely ever revealed, and with just how quickly things change within the game, very rarely ever matters?
Not unless discontent is caused within the club in question of course?

True I was thinking we will know by May but as I mentioned a few minutes ago we do not know why either party took umbrage.

Perhaps GT feeling unappreciated and it never being likely he will be is what has influenced him to seek a move and BR would rather keep him because BR appreciates GT and what he brings of value to the squad he is responsible for that supporters simply do not appreciate.

Going back to Tommy Gemmel days I think only Izaguire and Tierney met the approval of the support as a LB of Celtic standard. There might be more but not many, GT being but just one who has fallen short of that standard but still did a job at a lower standard.

BR is accused of arrogance in thinking he knows better than supporters who think they know better without know all the factors at play. Its a two edged judgement sword with many unknowns.

Again that is an imbalance on how we use our wider areas?
Right or wrong, I don’t know.
But the delivery that kyogo thieves upon, with the low ball in at pace, for kyogo to get across the defence with the near post runs.
Seems to have disappeared now, and kyogo with less of a goal return as a result?
Coincidence or defence better prepared for that ball, or total lack of it getting delivered?
Spoilt for choice imo

Hi Johnno:
As an aside, the awkward situation Celtic find themselves in with Taylor, and Liverpool with Alexander-Arnold, is the ridiculous length of time it is taking to resolve a contract. If the impediment is with a player who cannot make up his mind whether to sign a contract or wait until his existing contract terminates to make a decision, give him a deadline date beyond which there is no more negotiating. Take it or leave it.
We have had far too many of these Mexican standoffs in the past.

Maybe I’m guessing at a reason for Brendan’s frustrated outburst yesterday?

Thanks for all the advice in regard to parking in Edinburgh. Much appreciated.
I have now watched BR’s full press conference and I’m no less annoyed with him than I was yesterday. A complete mountain out of a mole
hill. The boos were hardly audible in the stadium in my opinion and only one section chanted for Keiran Tierney. Take it up with them please Brendan. You know exactly who they are. I would also like to add that I and thousands of other supporters have attended 3 games in 12 days over the festive period and have been happy to do so. I haven’t booed, I haven’t sang for players who aren’t with us any more but what I have done is wait till the game is finished and clapped the players and you on the full time walk round the park. Since you decided yesterday not to bother maybe on Wednesday I’ll do the same and get down the road nice and early. This is always a problem in the making for any club, especially an established players and key member of the squad.
Letting the player play on, allows him far more control over the situation.
The question remains as to whether the club are prepared to let such a situation continue?

In Taylor case, I think it’s a wait and see what develops?
So it’s been nothing more than speculation upon what is going on within the background?
But certainly not buying into that the powers to be are sitting around twiddling there thumbs, waiting upon a decision from Taylor, even moreso with the window open now?

Personally think Taylor is going to snub Rodgers over the issue imo?
And don’t believe it does our club, any good whatsoever, to let a contract situation to develop to this stage either?

Anyway, was again disappointed with idah yet again yesterday.
The lack of him even getting into the box and a goal scoring position is becoming frustrating.
I know he was offside for the 1 opportunity, but don’t recall another within open play?
For 9M expected a far better return than that, and his link up play isn’t to much to shout about either at present imo?

I have no idea what’s happening in the background and no idea what the denouement will be.
But Brendan has been saying for weeks now how much he likes GT, and how much he wants the Club to resolve the impasse, so that he stays a Celtic player. Thats up to Nicholson, GT and his agent. So someone is being dilatory, stubborn or realistic. If PL were involved, I know where I would be looking🤣.

Maybe Brendan is concerned the Club is dragging its feet, and he might miss out on both KT and GT? That’s me guessing again, but when the Club is indecisive, it merely invites fans to make guesses as to what’s happening.

Nottingham Forest started the game at Wolves in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Leading 2-0, and with Wolves pressing, manager Nuno Santos has switched to 5 across the back with a 5-4-1 formation.
He has done this numerous times this season, while protecting a lead.
Yet another example of a pragmatic elite manager changing formation on the fly to respond to changed circumstances on the field.

Interesting outlook.
Unfortunately with the window now open, it can easily become board pelters time very quickly also?

This window is going to be totally different, than many beforehand.
Not in the manner, that any potential signings will be later on within this window, and without a winter break to press the reset button either?

It’s more to do with these 2 CL matches that still have to be played.
Even though I still believe that we will reach the knockout phase, it will require our existing players within our squad, to get us there.

After that only 3 changes are allowed to our original 25man CL squad that was put in place in September.

Still don’t know if recalling Dane Murray as a potential replacement for Welsh within the squad, actually could be regarded as one of those possible changes?
Hopefully Murray can be regarded as a B list player, so wouldn’t count as 1, but don’t actually know?

Still fail to see where or how Palma and rocki fit into the plans of Rodgers whatsoever?
With Palma still required for them CL matches still, and a growing demand for another wide option now, not an easy solution available to that one either currently imo?

So could be a case, that potential targets are tied up with clubs still involved in European football at present?

Patience may be required from our support during this window, but according to Rodgers now, we haven’t got any?

So potentially interesting times for the month of January awaits us, as usual

Sorry it’s a wee bit late; something unexpected came up…

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #30 CELTIC 3 ST MIRREN 0 (KUHN(2), TRUSTY)*

Good evening, friends.
After Thursday’s debacle we knew that there was likely to be extra pressure on Celtic to see how we bounced back. Events earlier in the day at Easter Road certainly removed some of the worry from us fans. And ultimately the team got back to winning ways too with a not too shabby performance.
We certainly started well with evidence that we intended to be quicker to the ball and to get the ball forward more quickly than of late. But without creating any real clear chances. But the breakthrough finally came just after the half hour mark. Calum McGregor managed a wee bit of centre circle keepy uppy touching the ball on to McCowan. Luke played a perfectly weighted pass out to Daizen Maeda on the left and Daizen’s pass into the box for Kuhn was equally perfect. Perhaps the keeper could have done better but no complaints as Celtic went 1 up.
10 minutes later and Austen Trusty got his first ever goal in the hoops. This looked to be a well worked set play. As Engels took yet another good corner, Idah moved forward taking 2 St Mirren defenders with him and Austen moved into the space to get his head onto Arne’s cross and place it perfectly into the net. Half time 2 nil and most fears had been relieved.
Early in the second half a simultaneous groan went round the stadium as the floodlights failed. We later learned it was a major power outage affecting the East End. Fortunately, Celtic Park’s back up generator kicked in within a few seconds. The referee called the managers over to explain that the game would continue but without VAR. Woo hoo, I thought! And as luck would have it there were no subsequent dubious decisions or controversy to speak of.
In the 67th minute a great bit of quick thinking by our (best ever?) goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel saw him throw a torpedo of a ball out towards Luke McCowan who got the better of his marker and fired the ball into Kuhn. Nicolas’s first touch was sublime putting him one on one with the goalkeeper but disappointingly Kuhn failed to lift the ball enough and the keeper made the save. Almost immediately Celtic regained possession and a fine flighted ball into the box was controlled by Engels who tried a cheeky backheel across the box. The St Mirren keeper and full back (Fraser I think) contrived to get in each others way and the ball rolled along to Nicolas for an easy tap in for 3-0.
All in all a satisfactory end to the 4-game Festive period where Celtic picked up 9 points, scoring 11 and conceding 3. Our nearest challenger picked up 5 points scoring 9 and conceding 7. Over the piece we extended our points gap by 4 and our goal difference by 6.

We have now played 30 games this season, winning 22, drawing 6 and losing 2. We have scored 82 and conceded 23 (domestically it’s 72-13 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Thanks, as always to the 57 who voted. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Schmeichel: 1
Johnston: 9
Carter-Vickers*: 9
Trusty: 19
Taylor: 2
McGregor: 3
Engels*: 49
McCowan: 12
Kuhn*: 56
Idah: 1
Maeda: 10
Hatate: 0
Yang: 2
Kyogo: 9
Palma: 0

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against St Mirren are –
Kuhn – 5 Points
Engels – 4 points
Trusty – 3 points
McCowan – 2 points
Maeda – 1 point

And the overall positions after 30 games played are –
52 points – Kuhn
41 points – Bernardo, Scales
36 points – Hatate, Schmeichel
35 points – Maeda
33 points – McGregor
32 points – Engels
25 points – Trusty
22 points – Carter-Vickers
21 points – Johnston A
18 points – McCowan
17 points – Valle
14 points – Kyogo, Taylor
7 points – O’Riley
5 points – Idah
4 points – Forrest
3 points – Welsh
1 point – Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley

Next up is yet another home league game, this time against Dundee United on Wednesday evening, kick off 7.45pm.

I know Taylor has restricted his Twitter account because he was getting a lot of abuse from the public, about his displays, it was open to all when Ange first used him as an inverted role, and he had a purple patch.

When his performances declined in the eyes of many, he got some abuse on his account and changed it to a group/friends-only account.

I’ll be very surprised in the Board dispense with big Clem. Bennett made it clear at the last AGM that the days of spending money they didn’t have were over.

They have set sail (finally) on a fiscally prudent line of travel and won’t – and cannot – reverse that. Their fans are not going to like it at all but they are going to have to lump it if they are going to remain a going concern.

Clem appears to have agreed to be the captain of the ship for the journey. If they fling him overboard now where the hell do they turn?

The goodwill he gained by beating us has been immediately squandered at Hibs. If they were to lose to Dundee it would create a fan backlash that might test the resolve of the Board. But if I’m right he has little to really worry about.

Billy Bhoy would suit me just fine if the bald prince stays he has them all wound up and talking of VAR conspiracies and how the refs are all against them.

He’s worse than the used car salesman Beale. I hope he’s here for the long run, just that I’m surprised the board don’t throw the baby out with the bath water as is their want to do, when results don’t suit the huns.

I mean 3 wins in 10 away games is really something !

Did the scum really cut the wage bill by any sufficient amount?

Still more came into that kip, that left?

Along with another 8M needed in confetti during December, which is a bit earlier than usual also?

2 seasons ago their wage bill was higher than ours i believe. The figure I saw was that a cut of around £17m was required. They managed around £11m so still a bit to go yet. They’re desperate to get rid of Tavpen and Hagi but neither were moved on.

They’ll maybe have the players running around with a price tag on the back of their shirts rather than their squad number before the end of the window!

Oglach 8.29

True i will not set foot inside Celtic park while PL is there, my choice, my loss i guess. However i still own a reasonable number of Celtic shares and on occasion still make a financial contribution to Celtic FC via other channels. So its your contention that only those who attend games at Celtic park are allowed to have an opinion on any matters pertaining to the club. Catch yerself on a chara.

Oglach, dont worry bout me friend,am well caught on:-)).

Its my contention that you base your Celtic match attending experience(support) on someone i take you dont know or have met.
In Glasgow parlance- ‘am no gaun if hes gaun'(Peter Lawell)

Ach Oglach thats childish in the extreme and not principalled at all,you only harm yourself by exempting yourself of experiences with friends on cup final and title days, european days as well as and most importantly sharing those experiences with your own kin at Celtic Park,Hampden or wherever, experiences that bind all supporters, and totally outshine any merchandise you buy or shares purchased.

Celtic will be hear long after Peter Lawell,
He is not Celtic, you are, your sons, daughters,me and every Celtic supporter living,as Simple Minds in Belfast child sings ‘come back Oglach youv been away to long’
And when you do i will get you a pint
Or even a ticket in if i have a spare.
Care Always
