Eagerly awaited
Jeez, it feels like only yesterday we failed to peel those Tangerines, mind you the game was at their midden, and was technically last year, so the chance to set the record straight has fallen pretty quickly which is timely.
As is the weather, temperatures will swing a massive 8 degrees between daytime and nighttime, which is one way of saying it will be Baltic at Parkhead tonight, today, until Spring at least.
While conditions may be poor, there’s always something special about a midweek game under the floodlights. Nighttime games just have a nostalgic feeling, and the pre-match libations usually help deliver a lively support seeking that warm fuzzy feeling that comes with watching us play the Celtic way. How we play, how we are playing I should say, has been somewhat of a source of debate even spilling over into a bit of public spat, which by itself makes tonight’s clash that bit more interesting.
Brendan made a rod for his own back in hitting out (in his own way) at the support, which in turn leads me to believe the support will hit back (in their own way) should the occasion call for it. A Green Brigade banner reminding those in the corridors of power the Celtic support are permanent whilst they are temporary wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest. Dull uninspiring play may well draw statement howls from a support feeling entitled to hit back, as would another bit-part post match lap of honour.
There’s one way to cast all that aside though and move forward, literally and figuratively. A rip roaring performance that leaves no questions, fast free flowing football that’s pleasing on the eye, a plain old fashioned thumping of the opposition would really help everyone to get back on track and send a large message of reassurance that this squad is getting better and the good times will roll on despite our nose being bloodied at Ibrox and the verbal slap down that’s got Celtic cyberspace in a tizzy.
Easy enough then, one really good game to reset the narrative and leave all feeling rosey again, football’s equivalent of buying the missus flowers and/or a box of chocolates. But as some idiot once said, when it comes to chocolates you never know what you’re going to get, and that’s certainly the case in football with its beautiful unpredictability.
Having got my team selection completely wrong at the weekend, it’s time I just acknowledge we don’t have a settled 11 you can hang your hat on, Kasper aside nothing surprises me anymore. I suppose that’s a good thing, we have more depth than any other team, perhaps more depth than any other time from the past, but there’s various angles at play with regards to team selection. I’ve a feeling the manager needs to see his summer purchases really shine in order to continually assure those holding the purse strings, plus the Greg Taylor situation has been allowed to snowball into a potential problem. Here’s my take on that.
Basically KT’s desire to come home would have been known, was known, which lead to no agreed fee to buy Valle, no pay rise to top tier wage bracket for Greg as he will be second choice behind his fellow Scotland International, and EBT Arteta is loathe to help out the Leather Belts by accepting any fee in January. It’s not an ideal situation, was such events are part and parcel of football. But I do hold a degree of sympathy for GT here, any subpar performance will be met by critics saying he’s protecting himself to get a big Bosman, any top drawer performance will be met by critics saying he’s only playing well to get a big Bosman, any backpass rather than forward pass gets met with howls of derision. Its a bit damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t, while the threat of injury and unemployment if injured hovers. But if KT and new back up (he will be needed) turn out better than GT and Valle, then alls well that ends well.
Call me old fashioned in my belief energetic players are called for on a frigid night, call me naive if I say it might be a game to rest a few legs as we approach our biggest European games in years, but given all the current circumstances and side-angles involved, this game has taken on more importance than usual,
Eagerly awaited?
Aye, sounds about right.

You must have been watching a different game from me , if don’t think Idah showed for the ball.
StTams
Possibly?
I thought in first half he was actually blocking passing and shooting lanes.
Did he find a team mate after showing for ball?
I counted once where he gave a loose pass.
All others found a team mate
Can’t understand why Kyogo, who has been rotten most of the season.
Doesn’t receive the scrutiny that Idah receives
Reading comments during the game I never noticed anyone giving Utd players credit for blocking shots or getting into a position where a player decides to pass rather than shoot.
I think that is only natural as our focus is on Celtic players but in totality the way opposition teams set out to keep Celtic at bay influences the performance of our players.
If that means game is less entertaining then the next best thing is to win, beats losing.
Its not as if Celtic have players of the quality that can consistently be entertaining and win.
I thought we dominated first half and 1 goal was not a reflection of that domination because of the way Utd defended.
Second half they pressed us more to win ball and got their best chances from set play.
We coped and I thought the subs (even Palma who ran ball out of play in his first tussle) contributed to the deserved win. Palma played in a troubling cross for the goal that Bernardo and Hatate finished off.
The Idah experiment of him being a target man for long ball did not work out although he
did help keep pressure on Utd defence in first half.
Job done without being exceptional on a bitterly cold night against a very defensive United team that caused a few squeaky bum moments in the second half until Reo’s goal HH
Bernardo and Engels need to start just now
Yang is a waste of a jersey 🙈
GB repertoire of ex player songs tried to prove a point but failed to create any atmosphere 🤔
Mahe,
what I have learned from judging a player early is to observe their ball control. If they are failing to impress in a game but they can deftly control the ball, there is hope. It is not an absolute but if ball control is poor, they need to be outstanding in some other aspect. For example, Maeda’s ball control is not great but he has speed and an engine.
Tonight Engels reminded me of Scott Brown’s last performance for Hibs before he joined us. He gave a complete midfield performance. He had energy, insightful first time passing, and a good read of the game. His tackling back was not bad either. He had several shots on goal which was a blessing as others wanted to walk the ball into the net. He has learned how the team plays…by that I mean, he now knows where his teammates will be.
Hope this helps,
Rebus
Thought we were decent enough within the first half.
Our tempo and ball movement was good, and back to winning the ball back quickly, which led to our first goal.
Unfortunately the last and most important part of the equation was still missing?
With the good ball into the danger areas, but no one on the end of them, or players getting into the danger areas but couldn’t find that telling pass.
So only one up at half time in a half of attack against defensive, didn’t get us the rewards, that we would have liked, and possibly deserved imo?
The second half, was a totally different story on show. United getting more adventurous and we didn’t react particularly well with there different approach either.
Back to playing a game relying on moment’s moreso, than able to put together a strong counter attacking game, when turning over possession.
Still it took a semi counter attack to finally get the second, as nerves were increasing, with some half decent chances handed up by ourselves, and the defence having to work for there wages?
So overall happy with the result, performance wise I thought was OK, based mainly on our first half showing.
Yet with so much focus and importance upon the young boys game, there still a fair bit of improvement required within our performance levels, as that particular game is not looking like a formality for ourselves upon current form imo?
Rebus
Agreed, some of his recent man of the match awards could be debatable?
Not the case tonight, as our best player by some distance tonight.
Thought idah and yang had a few decent moments in the first half, but both must have got frost bite at half time, and weren’t alone either.
Hatate and Paulo provided some decent moments with there introduction, and along with Palma, Rodgers can possibly claim a masterclass use of our subs for the second very important goal.
The second half in general was no masterclass by any means imo?
Would like to see the Paulo, Engels and Hatate midfield used more often, and hope that combination is used to start at the weekend imo?
16 points clear with 2 tough away games coming up 👍
i am hoping it’s either the time of year or too much football or playing within ourselves…but the dynamism has gone from the team. This horseshoe football is very reminiscent of Brendan’s 2nd season first time round.
I also wish we would play the ball into space more. When centre backs have the ball, whether they play it central or wide, the receiving player is facing the centre back and receives it to feet which makes it harder to progress the ball and often results in it being sent straight back,

The biggest concern from tonight, is the potential injury to kuhn?
Hopefully it’s nothing more than a precaution, but may well be needed to be wrapped up in cotton wool beforehand.
This is a growing problem within the wide right position for ourselves.
Still believe yang looks better and far more comfortable on the left more so than the right imo?
Same applies for Maeda possibly, and Palma is never used on the right.
So we may well have to act fairly quickly in the market now, as walking bit of a tightrope at present, and even more so if we should be missing kuhn for any length of time?
Rebus,
Many thanks Sir, glad to read that as I often sit down and feel today’s the day he takes the game by the scruff of the neck, dominates it.
Typical I couldn’t watch this one. I think he’s a player.
Take care in those temps and in the snow.
Hail Hail
Re Clemente banging on about us spending 30m.
They had a higher net spend than us in the summer.
Not our fault we sell a player for £30m and they sell a team for 800 grand

========
Perhaps it is because Kyogo has shown the heights he can reach and we know what he is capable of Idah, apart from goal v Ross County has not shown enough yet to get to that point.
Rebus analysis especially on first touch is on the mark.

Maybe not enough for some….
Who is the kit man these days?
Still a pretty sombre Brendan post match. Wonder why?

I was sure when the Martin O’Neill chant started Brendan turned to the bench and accepted he was fecked! That’s the point he knew he’d never best the Celtic support. He said afterwards in his interview that’s the dance but deep down he knows the support are smarter than he gives them credit for!
