Eagerly awaited
Jeez, it feels like only yesterday we failed to peel those Tangerines, mind you the game was at their midden, and was technically last year, so the chance to set the record straight has fallen pretty quickly which is timely.
As is the weather, temperatures will swing a massive 8 degrees between daytime and nighttime, which is one way of saying it will be Baltic at Parkhead tonight, today, until Spring at least.
While conditions may be poor, there’s always something special about a midweek game under the floodlights. Nighttime games just have a nostalgic feeling, and the pre-match libations usually help deliver a lively support seeking that warm fuzzy feeling that comes with watching us play the Celtic way. How we play, how we are playing I should say, has been somewhat of a source of debate even spilling over into a bit of public spat, which by itself makes tonight’s clash that bit more interesting.
Brendan made a rod for his own back in hitting out (in his own way) at the support, which in turn leads me to believe the support will hit back (in their own way) should the occasion call for it. A Green Brigade banner reminding those in the corridors of power the Celtic support are permanent whilst they are temporary wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest. Dull uninspiring play may well draw statement howls from a support feeling entitled to hit back, as would another bit-part post match lap of honour.
There’s one way to cast all that aside though and move forward, literally and figuratively. A rip roaring performance that leaves no questions, fast free flowing football that’s pleasing on the eye, a plain old fashioned thumping of the opposition would really help everyone to get back on track and send a large message of reassurance that this squad is getting better and the good times will roll on despite our nose being bloodied at Ibrox and the verbal slap down that’s got Celtic cyberspace in a tizzy.
Easy enough then, one really good game to reset the narrative and leave all feeling rosey again, football’s equivalent of buying the missus flowers and/or a box of chocolates. But as some idiot once said, when it comes to chocolates you never know what you’re going to get, and that’s certainly the case in football with its beautiful unpredictability.
Having got my team selection completely wrong at the weekend, it’s time I just acknowledge we don’t have a settled 11 you can hang your hat on, Kasper aside nothing surprises me anymore. I suppose that’s a good thing, we have more depth than any other team, perhaps more depth than any other time from the past, but there’s various angles at play with regards to team selection. I’ve a feeling the manager needs to see his summer purchases really shine in order to continually assure those holding the purse strings, plus the Greg Taylor situation has been allowed to snowball into a potential problem. Here’s my take on that.
Basically KT’s desire to come home would have been known, was known, which lead to no agreed fee to buy Valle, no pay rise to top tier wage bracket for Greg as he will be second choice behind his fellow Scotland International, and EBT Arteta is loathe to help out the Leather Belts by accepting any fee in January. It’s not an ideal situation, was such events are part and parcel of football. But I do hold a degree of sympathy for GT here, any subpar performance will be met by critics saying he’s protecting himself to get a big Bosman, any top drawer performance will be met by critics saying he’s only playing well to get a big Bosman, any backpass rather than forward pass gets met with howls of derision. Its a bit damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t, while the threat of injury and unemployment if injured hovers. But if KT and new back up (he will be needed) turn out better than GT and Valle, then alls well that ends well.
Call me old fashioned in my belief energetic players are called for on a frigid night, call me naive if I say it might be a game to rest a few legs as we approach our biggest European games in years, but given all the current circumstances and side-angles involved, this game has taken on more importance than usual,
Eagerly awaited?
Aye, sounds about right.

Yang with oceans of space on the outside, but STILL elects to go inside.
Time for a goal, Hoops!
Nobody on the back post for Engels corner.
2 shots on goal in 20 minutes. 75% possession but hasn’t generated one save by United keeper.
What formation are we playing?
Maeda!
That’ll do rightly.
Yessss, Maeda
1-0
Maeda!!
Mags
4-3-3
Quelle surprise!
Nice initial shot from McCowan,Maeda with rebound.
Puzzled why Yang will not even try to go outside the full back. He is just causing more congestion inside.
Shot by Engels, unlucky.
Celtic totally dominant, but why don’t we shoot more often from outside the box?
Spurs player off on stretcher. Think it was Betancur.
Engels playing very well.
Maeda getting loads of space on the left.
Clancy spots a threat from Celtic attack. Blows to halt it.
When United are defending, Clancy takes up position on right side of their midfield as an extra defender.🤣
Lost my stream, it was shyte anyway obviously Celtic TV with D/U commentators. drone drone drone…
Yang with licence to roam.
Celtic with 83% possession, but still, we don’t shoot.
Goodwin’s tactics would get Fitba’ banned.
So far Fans singing for Tommy Burns, Billy McNeill and Charlie Mulgrew 😁
If there’s not a winger in the academy, that’s better than Yang.
They would be as well closing it down
We are trying to pass the ball into the net while inside the 18 yard box.
Their keeper has had to do nothing except pick the ball out of the net once.
Yang is frustrating in the extreme, first reaction is always to go backwards.
But then again, I obviously do not know football.🤣
FFS the lions would be 5-0 up by now, wallace 2 chalmers 2 lennox 1 to much tippy tappy stuff for me, is IDAH and YANG on the park, another true story😎😎❤
We are moving the ball much quicker. Hopefully, that will result in credit in the second half as DU tire. Lots of daisy cutter crosses into the box but nobody, least of all Idah, getting on to them.
Somebody needs to blooter it in and around the edge of their penalty area.
Yang needs to go to the outside some times. He is too predictable. Cannot see why he does not do it. Instructions?
Good entertainment.
Rebus
if Celtic’s strategy is to pass the ball sideways for 60 minutes to wear down the opposition in hopes of creating chances in the last 30 minutes against fatigued opponents, why dont they simply have the teams run 10 km before the fans show up, then play a 30 minute game with fans present. This would save the fans having to sit in shitty weather for 60 minutes with little or no real action, and then have the fans present for the ‘last’ 30 minutes where there is some action. More time in the pub. Fans dont grumble. BR happy as fans not grumbling. Win-win
HEY MIKE your talking too much sense, get back on that lovely beach😎😎😎❤
MAGS we’re playing 1-8-8-8 does that ring a bell😎❤
I would take CCV or Trusty off and put Kyogo on. No need for 4 at the back. Kaspar could be in a deck chair.
deja vu!
McCowan and Engels making attempts to break Utd lines.
Callum giving a masterclass in sideways and backwards possession with a sprinkling of pointing.
Idah just getting in the way.
82% possession with little threat.
Brodgeball in full flow.
Anyone else find it strange that Jack Butland, rather than Sevco, has been posting more info on his injury? Makes me wonder if there isnt more to that story ….
Engels unlucky from edge of area.
Listening to these two Dundee United commentators, I now fully understand Self-Harming
Clancy blowing for a free any time we go near a United player.
Been watching Barca -Athletic Club in the Spanish Supercup semifinal out of the corner of my eye. Barca up 2-0, but 24 shots by both teams so far.
Sorry, but Yang is a waste of a jersey.
Yang giving the ball away due to his unwillingness to go outside the defender.
Idah wow £9m for what ?
We cant even have our subs ready for the holy, sacred 60th minute, like Utd.
McCowan slow as a carthorse.
Yang and Idah off.
Two empty jerseys.
Kyogo and Hatate on.
Maybe Goodwin’s tactic was to let us tire ourselves out in the first half?😅
I have never seen a team so reluctant to shoot from 18-25 yards out. It’s uncanny.
Great header from Kyogo. Near post. Good save.
Much needed save from Schmeichel.
So why can’t we do what Middleton just did?
