Sayonara And Bem-Vindo

Morning,all.

I think by now that everyone is aware of my aversion to prodigals, that “you should never go back.” Be that as it may, I can hardly be critical of stats-obsessed football commentators reeling off historical data which is of little relevance to the game we are watching if I pull the Bertie Auld rabbit out of the hat every time a possible return for a previous hero is mooted.

I groan every time I hear a commentator reel off this nonsense. Who wants to know that Melchester Rovers haven’t lost to Glasgow Gasworks United in sixty years when they have scored first after a missed penalty, or whatever nonsense they come out with. Usually greeted by a chorus of “Absholutely, that’sh for shoor and I’ll tell you shumshin elsh…” from his lobotomised jakey sidekick?

My argument in these circumstances is that each game is to be taken on its own merits, that current form may matter but stuff from sixty years ago sure as hell doesn’t.

I therefore greet the signing of Jota yesterday with loud hurrahs, cheering to the rooftops. After all, it is only around sixteen months ago that he was one of our top men, arguably the fans’ favourite-and for good reason too. He was just completing a treble-winning season to add to his double the previous year. And speaking of doubles, we could forgive him the double denim. Hell, he looked like he could carry it off, so why not?

I certainly didn’t grudge him his move to Saudi, arguing that in three years time he would be 26yo with £30m tax-free in the bank. And young enough yet to continue to make his career back at the top level. Never for a minute did I think that his time post-Celtic would turn out as it has. Never for a minute did I think we would see him back in our colours either, and certainly not so soon.

Signing a 25yo with only two decent seasons in his career to date would normally bring its own question marks. And I won’t lie to you, there has to be a concern that the months since he left will have left him struggling for confidence and even more for match fitness. We shouldn’t expect to see many MOTM performances from him in the early weeks, though with a player like Jota I reckon anything is possible.

So, welcome back. We love hunskelpers, and Jota certainly meets the mark on that score.

Speaking of hunskelpers, the downside to the deal is the departure of one. Kyogo. I’m sad to see him leave, and I wish him well. I hope the move works for him, and that he is a roaring success. And that he achieves his dream of a recall to his national team, which I believe is the main motivation for this otherwise strange move. And, of course, I stand by every word of my article on the subject a week ago. Especially the part about the terrible timing of the move.

The onus is now on our recruitment team to earn their corn by finding a replacement, and they have less than a week to do so. No pressure then! The reason for such a ludicrously short timescale is obvious-they have sat on their hands for the first four weeks of the window. Even though they were aware months ago that Kyogo wanted to leave (and that the club was happy to facilitate that) there have been no obvious attempts to get a replacement. And this time there is no Mark Lawwell around to point the finger at either.

It is entirely down to Nicholson, Rodgers and Co that we now find ourselves even shorter up front than before-and given the lack of goals so far from our striking spearhead, that is playing with fire. It’s bad enough that we head to Villa Park tomorrow night with only Idah and the untested Cummings available, but it is unthinkable that they and the equally untried Johnny Kenny will have to see us through till the end of the season.

So much for a well-run club,huh?

Strange that the 2 backup leftbacks have been snapped up in this window but the one plenty of people find lots of faults with is still here. Is it a matter of nobody wanting him other than us.

Have I missed something? Surely Scales can be utilised at left back if KT isn’t signed and Valle does go?

When you look at how Rodgers makes up his 20man SPFL match day squad, especially with the 9 subs.
Then Rodgers has usually went with a CB and 2 full backs in amongst his subs options.
With Scales now possibly able to cover 2 positions as a sub on the left of defence.
Then in turn could allow an extra attacking or midfield option, to be added to our 20man SPFL match day squad.

Patson Daka (formerly of Salzburg) who he had a good scoring record with. Pretty sure BR signed him for Leicester but hasn’t done well there (might be a loan to buy option).

Kvistgaarden is still a possibility.

Apparently made a bid (unknown amount) for the winger Orjasaeter (which might mean we expect Kuhn to move next season). We know Yang & Palma (will be/should be) out the door anyway.

Even though he was just injured there is supposedly still interest in Moro.

If Valle is away to Como then GT has probably signed an extension until the summer (fuxake) *Smiles at McCaff*

The good news in that is it could mean KT is en-route.

ASWGL..GT in contract until the summer anyway, no need for an extension! He’s our players, much maligned, but as well as being most manager’s FIRST pick in the time he’s been here, he’s now the ONLY show in town! When oh when will youse all realise GT is the man!! 🤣

Johnno…we’re getting to a desperately short of personnel stage! There has got to be stuff almost done behind the scenes. I cannot believe Kyogo would be allowed to go, nor Valle, without replacements lined up and ready to come in. It really does have shades of Lawell’s Unseen Hand about it…and that cannae be good!
For what it’s worth I reckon we’re far from finished and the next few days will see new recruits!

I may well be in the minority, but don’t believe that the board are having any impact upon the decision making process of Rodgers imo?

We let Welsh go out on loan, so his position within our CL squad, has to be fulfilled by another Scottish player.
Everything points to that been Tierney at present.
But is it a potential possibility that Andy Irvine, the midfield player at West ham could also be a possibility in the making?

Don’t believe kyogo was sold without Rodgers giving the OK about it, so can Maeda do the job that kyogo once did?
And in return jota becoming a better option than Maeda in the wide left position?
I personally think so, and couldn’t question Rodgers decision making, if that’s his intentions for the remainder of this season.

Might as well burn the rule book now. A hun ref sends a hun off for “violent conduct” as per the rules and the huns win an appeal. Where do we go from hete.

Frodshambhoy
January 28, 2025 5:58 pm

Said it before. Maeda will play through the middle like he does for Japan so no need to spend any money on a striker.
Suits the board down to the ground.

Potential upside is we could see Kenny and Cummings get some Big Bhoy game time.

McCaff
January 28, 2025 6:05 pm

Auldbhoy…let’s be real, it was never violent conduct, not even a hint of it. It was petulant, stupid and unnecessary but hardly anyone effort to make contact and probably zero contact. A yellow card was warranted but it should never have stood as a red. Walsh should’ve changed his mind at the monitor and I doubt anyone would’ve enjoyed bothered.
Now, in saying all of that, Diomande us nowt but a feckin cheat. His elbow on the back of Reo’s head did warrant a red so if Sunday’s had stood I eould gave had nae sympathy for him.

Hey Frodshamsbhoy:
Hope all is well, and you are staying away from any dodgy leggy-type company.🤣

This is Brendan, 4 days ago. Absolutely unequivocal that although Daizen can play through the middle, he definitely wants another striker. ( About 12 min, 20 seconds in ). It’s also not the first time he said it either. If he doesn’t get one, it’s either because he is getting stiffed by the Board, or the feckless lollygagging Lord Lucan sat on his hands for far too long.

Hi McCaff:
I’m sorry, but Scales is slower than a week in jail. His reaction time before he lumbers into movement is painful to watch. Any fast winger is going to go past him as if he doesn’t exist.
I watched a near 40 year old Ronaldo turn him into a pretzel in Lisbon earlier this year. It’s ludicrous if we are contemplating him filling in that position in a Champions League knockout round.

I would far rather we paid Barca £6M for Valle, than £7M for a Norwegian winger. We have known for years that neither Scales nor Taylor is of sufficient standard for the first team.
For back up, fine, but we really need to up our defensive standards to be playing in Europe.

IQ4…I wasnt talking about Scales’ ability or shortcomings, I only mentioned him because it was being suggested we had no LB cover if Valle is permitted to go (or recalled by Barca to sell him on!)
Anyhoo, Valle didn’t want to come to Celtic permanently which is why we don’t have an option on him. So £6m or £30m it doesn’t matter, he doesn’t want to be here. That’s what the initial reports were saying anyhoo!

I dont think it was violent contact BUT the ref thought different as per the rule book. Diomande is a thug. Had a skelp at AJ. Basically punched Reo in the neck area . Gets caught out for trying to wee ghirl slap somebody and has an appeal approved.Funny Walsh red carded 2 US G players and him in 2 games but only he can play now this week.

Lets get Big Don to rename the Scottish football rules ” Sevco rule book of football” . Seems hes doing everything else…….

Villa Park is quite a way from the city. The Wellington in Bennets Hill supposedly has good ales in casks, and lagers ciders if that’s your crowds thing, 3 floors with a beer garden. <– All taken from another site

Not impressed whatsoever, by our preparation work for a CL match tomorrow night.

Already missing from our 25man squad are,
Kyogo, Maeda, Forrest, CCV, Welsh and valle.
19 players left, for which 3 are goalkeepers.
16 outfield players, and 3 in Palma, rocki and yang on borrowed time within the plans of Rodgers by the looks of things.
And possibly having to start yang tomorrow night.

Will be struggling to even make the 5 subs allowed tomorrow night by the looks of things.

Even though the result might not have much bearing, performance levels still do imo.

Been a bit to much of this picking and choosing which games we might target to preform in, and ones we aren’t bothered about, during this January for my liking.

If we are going to put in a half hearted display tomorrow night, then believe the club should refund our supporters, if such an attitude is on display?

Only jota potentially available to change things for motherwell at the weekend, is certainly not an acceptable position to currently find ourselves in, and not to impressed with the current situation, especially when no need for it occurring to such levels imo.

Would agree about AJ also.

Was always going to be a tester this season, especially with the increased CL matches, no winter break, along with only 3 changes allowed to our original 25man CL squad.

Had a few doubts when finalised in September, got far more currently.

And this with a shorter summer break in store, with CL qualification games to contend with, moreso than a money spinning pre season tour.

Expected ourselves to be far better prepared in January with Paul tisdale introduced into the recruitment department, or some sort of footballing doctor?

Very little evidence on show, that the preparation work required for a club of our size, actually being undertaken to a sufficient standard at present
