The Nearly Men
Morning,all.
Last night saw one of the game’s great clubs visit our own great club, and what a show was on offer. We started the game like a bullet from a gun, with Kühn going on one of his runs across the edge of the area before firing it low into Neuer’s bottom corner-after only 25 seconds! Sadly, Idah had strayed into the keeper’s line of sight, and it was rightly ruled off.
Even more sadly, that was about as good as it got for us in the first half!
I didn’t check the first half stats, but they would have been heavily in favour of Bayern. They were passing us off the pitch, while all we could do in response was pass the ball off the pitch. Backs to the wall stuff for the entire remaining 44 minutes. And just when it looked like we were gonna go into the break on level terms-we lost focus and lost a goal.
How simple and straightforward it was too, and therefore completely avoidable. A simple enough long ball to the edge of the area on our left. Olise-who only a few years ago was playing for Reading!-picked it up and tried to cut inside Taylor. Instead,it ricocheted back to his right foot and he simply slammed it into the net! Seven bloody seconds before the break anaw!!!
Still,we had another 45 minutes to either endure or come up with an equaliser. Instead, our old failing at corners reared its ugly head again. Who leaves Kane unmarked in the six yard box, ffs? Simple answer to that one is-our defence, that’s who! He certainly didn’t need to be asked twice, just fired it into the net as he has done now for years. I mean, this is basic stuff, Celtic. As is keeping your concentration when you have just lost a goal. Again, we lose them in clutches. Even with the HT break to consolidate.
Quite honestly at that stage I was fearing a doing, considering how the match was going. We couldn’t get our foot on the ball, string a few passes together, create a chance. Bayern were doing it for fun. And clearly having fun too. And then, about ten minutes into the half, a potential lifeline. A lengthy VAR check for a foul by Upemecano on Engels. A stamp on the foot. The referee was called to his monitor-and we know how this usually plays out. Well, usually. Not this time. Referee stuck with his original decision.
In truth, I didn’t see anything to claim for, not until I saw the replay. I think we had a very good case, and can feel bloody hard done by on this one. It did seem to galvanise us into some action though, and not before time. A few minutes later, Taylor was off for Schlupp and Jota came on for Idah-replacing Maeda on the left, who moved into the central role. The Bayern CBs, about four metres tall the pair, must have thought their work was done for the night, just this tiny wee fella to concern us, haha. Well, the joke’s on them.
For starters, Upemecano was way short with a pass back. Daizen doesn’t need much of an opportunity, and he’d been waiting all night for this one. He robbed Neuer and rounded him, but took it well wide in the process. In fairness, he was probably hoping for a rash challenge-I know I was! His effort squirmed along the line to safety.
Next up from the bench was Yang for Kühn, who had persevered without much to show for it. I admit to liking the wee fella, but I don’t think he is at his best on the right. And he’s only 22yo,give the lad a chance! No matter, he poppped up a couple of minutes later as a stramash developed from a corner. His shot was probably sliding past, but Maeda stuck the nut in it and diverted it from close range into the net.
1-2 and game on! The crowd surged back into life, the players surged back into life, and now it was Bayern holding out. What a turnaround, but the job only part done. We needed the equaliser, for sure. We definitely threw everything at it, Bayern being rocked but not rolled, Kane being flattened.
AJ took a belt from the edge of the box. Had it gone in, it would have burst the net on its way to raising the roof! It was not to be, as Neuer parried it away for yet another corner. The ref gave us another seven minutes with which to find it, but the equaliser simply would not arrive. It wasn’t to be our night after all.
I can’t grudge Bayern their victory, given their performance for most of the game was miles better than ours. But I doubt they’d have grudged us that equaliser, given the effort we put in to find it. And to keep the score down at the other end! This was a very very good side we took on, and we acquitted ourselves well. But the scoreline doesn’t lie, and neither do the stats. We simply lost to a very good side.
We can hold our heads high after the whistle was blown, for there were no failures. Every player gave it all they had. In the end, just as we feared, they had more.

Got back too late last night to give my thoughts and have just finished a read back. I was proud of the team last night. We were up against a top European team, filled with footballers who are also athletes. First touch impeccable, constant movement and rotation, quick and really strong physically – all of them. We have players who have some of those attributes but maybe only one (Calmac) who has them all and his powers are waning. That means we had to play a containing game and I thought we did that really well. Myself and CCB were frustrated at the game because we felt we left it too late to go for it but on reflection it’s clear if we’d opened up, Bayern would have took advantage. As for BR and his fear of big teams. No wonder!! He has took scuddings against the big teams too many times in his tenures at Celtic. In my opinion he is looking for incremental improvements and building confidence that we can go away from home and beat teams similar to ourselves. We fell short this season to Zagreb but we’ll be better for it in the qualifiers should we get there and they hold nowhere near the fear for me that they have previously. That’s what the manager is building and we are lucky to have him. Thinking we can go toe to toe with big guns like Bayern is unrealistic.
Dybala is a superb player for Roma.
AZ with free kick from 25 yards.
An absolute screamer into top corner by Mijnans.
Simply sensational.
1-0 up on Galatasaray.
A belter from Galatasaray makes it 1-1 at AZ.
Tremendous long range shooting in many of these games, 2 in this game alone.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #40 CELTIC 1 BAYERN MUNICH 2 (MAEDA)*
Good evening, friends.
For those that like symmetry in their life, the first half last night was a perfect example, with the ball being in the net at one end after 26 seconds and at the other with 26 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, only the second one counted and despite our very good defensive set up and display Celtic went into the break a goal down.
Earlier in the day I had mentioned that in big games my 2 hopes were always the same – to have one (at least) moment of jumping about like a daft laddie; and to still be in the game with 15 to go. Well, at least I got my first wish almost instantly, cos when Kuhn’s fine strike found the net, me and all those around me danced and hugged for a full minute before even realising that offside was a possibility. TV pictures show that the decision was correct but even so, what a fantastic start. However, the next 44 minutes was pretty much one way traffic towards Kasper in goal. Our set up and organisation was first class and Bayern didn’t really create much from open play albeit that our keeper had a couple of decent saves. Harry Kane will feel he should have buried a back post header late in the first half and we now know that he wouldn’t mess up his next big chance.
Bayern’s first goal was an unstoppable strike by Elise. At the game I was highly critical of Greg Taylor’s poor defending for the goal but having seen the move again it really was fine margins. One step further back and Greg might have cleared the high ball, but it was not to be.
The second half was only 4 minutes old when Bayern doubled their lead. All night, Bayern had been threatening from corners, but our individual defenders had all seemed clear on their roles and positions. But something went wrong with this one and the consensus seems to be that it was AJ, who otherwise was fantastic, who should have been at least closer to Harry Kane to stop his fairly easy side foot volley into the net.
We then had our first glimmer of hope on the 55th minute. An extremely long VAR check by UEFA standards left most of us thinking that a Celtic penalty was inevitable, especially when the referee was called to look at the screen. But ultimately no foul was awarded although the incident did seem to ignite the crowd even more and give the players a reminder that we only need one wee break!
Our best spell of the game followed and for 20-25 minutes we were the dominant side, helped by the introduction of Jota and Schlupp but even more so by moving Maeda through the middle. In the 75th minute Daizen brilliantly anticipated a back pass heading to Neuer and got to the ball first but touched it to too tight an angle to have a real chance of scoring. Yang then came on for Kuhn and had a pretty productive 20 minutes. None more so than in the 79th minute when a bit of ping pong in the 6 yard box saw Hyunjun flick the ball up for Daizen to nod it over the line. Kyogo departed Celtic just after Daizen was sent off against Young Boys. In his 4 appearances since then Mr Maeda has scored in every game he’s played in, netting 7 in total. Currently he can do little wrong.
The momentum remained with Celtic during the remaining 10 minutes and the 7 added and our best effort was in the 91st minute when my own man of the match, Alistair Johnston broke into the box and hammered a goal bound effort that Neuer managed to turn round the post.
So, we keep the tie alive and face Bayern again in 5 days time. Keep it tight, somehow manage to score first and who knows where that could take us!
We have now played 40 games this season, winning 29, drawing 7 and losing 4. We have scored 111 and conceded 35 (domestically it’s 97-19 and in Europe it’s 14-16).
Thank you so much to the 65 who voted this time around. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Hi McCaff:
MIT would have got it. You will be familiar with the North American expression, “talking bullshit.” Anybody who does a lot of it is ‘shoveling’. A play on words for a wee bit of banter. 🤣
Now I expect you will tell me to take a McCaff to myself!😂

If the Turks hold it to 2-1, I think they will win it in Istanbul. Long way to go here.
