Score Early, Score Often

Morning,all.

After all the midweek excitement as we battled Bayern, it is back to the nitty-gritty of the league campaign today. That almost makes it sound like a distraction, but nothing could be further from the truth-winning the title is our No 1 Priority this season, as it has been in every season since Adam were a lad.

The reasons for this are obvious. Winning the title assures us of our best crack at The Champions League, which next season will see us enduring “only” one qualifying round. Win it, and we are once again in with the big boys, in with the big bucks which supplies the income for investment in players. It also gives us another four home games to the backdrop of the rousing Zadok The Priest, a harmless little ditty which drives our hun friends mental when they hear it as our ringtone!

But that is for another day. Today is all about the visit of Dundee United. When we last played them at the beginning of January, they were on a bit of a roll. Since then, they have one win in five. Our last game against them was fairly comfortable, the gulf in class showing that day as we ran out very straightforward winners.

However, only two weeks before that they held us to a 0-0 draw. None of us who watched that will want to see a repeat-indeed, none of us could bear to watch a repeat. It was a bloody awful match, the kind that makes you want to take up knitting instead. For that reason, they aren’t to be taken lightly.

BR doesn’t tend to take any opposition lightly, and even with the second leg of our CL tie against Bayern on Tuesday, I expect to see a full-strength side named. Our full-strength, of course, still offers some variation. Will Maeda play through the middle, or will that role be entrusted to Idah? Will Maeda start at all, given that Jota still needs game time? Or Yang for Kühn? Will Scales start at centre-back, and if so, which of the two incumbents will be rested? Is it Taylor or Sclupp at left back? Will McCowan get the nod at the start, allowing the boss to rest Engels or Hatate? What about Ralston?

Although that looks as though we have a capable and adaptable squad, and there’s no doubt that every other manager in the country would give their eye teeth for such selection dramas, there is little doubt that we are significantly short in midfield. We went into the season with five players, and while we had up till now been very fortunate with injuries, our luck had to end some time. And it has, with Bernardo being ruled out for around six weeks. So, down to four then. And that is something which should definitely concern us.

I’ve been rooting around our B team and youths for possible replacements, and I’m afraid there doesn’t appear to be one who looks remotely capable of stepping up. We will just have to hope that future injuries in that department are avoided, for we have no other option. This obviously needs to be addressed in the summer, and I’d expect us to be looking at one or other of the midfield regulars for other Scottish clubs.

While that probably brings us back to the hardy perennial of Lennon Miller, there are other options available. Including a former colleague of McCowan at Dundee. It would be harsh on Tony Docherty for us to take another of his players, especially given that a third has agreed to join up next season at Ibrox, but that’s the harsh reality of football nowadays. Hand out short-term contracts and they can come back to bite you in the rear end! Either way, whether we concentrate on finding a suitable signing in Scotland or elsewhere, we cannot go into next season so short in such a vital area of the pitch.

But back to today. In form opponents or not, we should be looking at three points from this one. That’s not to say it is a gimme, for I fully expect it to be a hard-fought ninety minutes. I’m looking forward to watching it, that’s for sure. Two things I want today then-three points and no further injuries. It’s hard to say which is more important.

Last word for me before an early night. nick Walsh is a snake, a cheating, conniving snake. His performance today was all about keeping Dundee Utd in the game as long as possible. 2 clear fouls on Engles in the space of ten seconds, play on. Try to take a quick free kick, nope, it’s two yards from where the offence took place. Celtic on the break with option going forward. Nope, foul to Celtic and dufc player booked. Advantage out the window. I was off my seat bawling at him several times today due to the blatant cheating. That’s unusual nowadays for me but he was at it today. It was so bad Calmac had to speak with him 3 or 4 times and he rarely does this.
Collum needs to get a grip of these referees. The new batch are just as bad as the current crop. They are either cheats or incompetent but neither is acceptable for £400 a game.

I agree with Brendan’s assessment of Idah, he did work very hard but apart from the goal, it was pish. Perhaps someone explain the offside rule to him, that would help !

Sure he’ll play a blinder the next game ⚽️

Idah is raw, but his potential is there for all to see. BR wanted him, and he’ll work with him.

His goal return is good, especially as he’s been a non starter mostly, but that’s changed and he’s scoring 1 per game now.

However, that’s only half the story. Lots to be excited about, but lots of work to be done beforehand.

Ref Walsh. The biggest cheat within the rules I have seen in many a long day. When I say within the rules thats how he gets away with it. Take today . I cant remember the exact player who is clugged but Callum breaks with Maeda -Idah and A.N.Other . Walsh doesnt play advantage because he doesnt need to not because he can. He is doing nothing wrong by the rules. In fact to some folk he IS playing by the rules. We all know as he himself does that he is cheating legally. He makes us retake a free kick 2 yards back but allows their keeper to take a free kick 10 yards ahead and at various times allows Utd players to steal 5 to 10 yards on a throw-in.
Remember this week him and another ref called Greg ( not Aitken) something both have to teach those unfortunate hun schoolkids so need to vheat every game we are involved in or their life would be unbearable.
Personally I cannot stand the guy. Even sent off 2 USG top players the week before the Huns played them knowing a game suspension would be forthcoming. If that isnt blatant but within the rules then I dont know what is.

I’ve been following the Idah discussion on here with interest. As usual, ATOB is right on the money, and that FRODSHAMSBHOY was obviously led astray pre-game by LEGGY, and I would be surprised if his eyes could focus.🤪😂

Since Brendan pressed so hard for Idah, he is never going to even obliquely criticize him in public. AULDHEID is correct. I watched Idah carefully the last 2 games, and the big man will sprint if he thinks he has a chance of getting on the ball, but his pressing out of possession is non-existent. You are allowed to do that if you are an aging Messi, conserving energy and playing in bursts, but to me Adam is resting on previous laurels. He can give us so much more, and he could start by chasing defenders like Maeda and the erstwhile Kyogo.

Walsh is only a functionary in a very long list of inept referees who have only risen to the top by being biased to the club from Govan. He’s not a good referee and like most referees in Scotland he would never have have progressed unless he made decisions that assisted the Rangers 🤔

They made us shoot into the Celtic end first, OK.

Now, when we head up there, shoot down the hill 2nd half. If we had done that earlier on in the season we would have won. I have years of Experience watching this shite, always right.

I would do the same at the Bigotdome to noise the feckers right up.

Auldbhoy,
Correct. I said today that such a performance should see chants of you don’t know what you’re doing ringing round the ground but that’s the whole point. He does know what he’s doing, that’s why he’s our top ref. It’s disgraceful.

The Huns, on their message boards, see it very differently with regards to refereeing standards.
They see the Unseen Fenian Hand at work and point to “Timmy” names- Clancy, Walsh, Connor as evidence. They are the victims of a terrible SFA injustice. Collum as head is just taking the piss.

They may have a point since they have achieved three trophies out of 42 in their short history, hardly the return expected from a referees favoured team.

Maybe their team is just not very good 😀

We should fully support their calls asking for officials from elsewhere.

They may then find they are actually worse than they think they are.

Just sayin
i think the massive difference since collum took over is the penalty stats. From Tavpen being practically the highest scorer in the league to getting one pen this season isn’t coincidental.

I don’t believe Huns or defences have changed their way of playing. I don’t think refs have changed their allegiances.

What I do think is that the refs have got a new boss. We’ve all had various bosses in our working lives and in most part we may adapt our behaviour input and output in order to impress. I don’t believe refs are any different. They want the top gigs so will adapt their behaviour accordingly.

Doesn’t mean they won’t still make bad decisions or have the occasional lapse or try to get away with stuff under the radar, but something as instant game changing as penalties has altered so dramatically from working for Crawford Allan to working for Willie Collum I can’t see what else it can be. That says a lot about the previous regime.

Morning all

Read back to last night and a reply made by A Thing of Beauty to a post of mine earlier in evening.

As I said Adam Idah will never be a favourite player of mine- even before last Wednesday’s carelessness cost us a brilliant goal I thought he was too often offside in the way he was then and yesterday there were a couple more. He has to cut that out. But I am sometimes surprised at how deft his touch can be especially away from goal. I think he works hard too and yesterday dropped deep to play a backward pass that a) attracted groans from the cognoscenti and b) got a pointless passage of play moving and which led, eventually, to our third goal.

Adam is, in my opinion, unlikely to ever be good enough to make a massive impression in Europe. But then again since since the glory days of the 60s and 70s other than Henrik, Chris Sutton, Big Sammi and perhaps Dembele few of of our more vaunted than Idah strikers have done well at the higher level.

Have a good day.

3H…I think their style of play has changed since Flip Flop arrived. Gerrard and Beale used the wings and fullbacks a lot more – think Tavpen and Barisic firing early balls into the box – but I also honestly believe that Collum has done something that’s changed how refs are scrutinised within his department. I’ve no idea what form these changes have taken but when R2ngers are bottom of the penalties awarded table you know things have shifted. Time will tell whether or not it will remain thus!
Now to work on penalties conceded as they seem to still get away with dodgy decisions in their own box.
Another positive has to be the monthly VAR review Collum undertakes. However, a 25 minute review that looks ONLY at decisions VARs decided to involve themselves is flawed, controversial decisions VAR have ignored (although not a huge amount, to be fair) are still prevalent.
On balance, it would appear a new broom has swept through the refereeing department and had a positive impact. The cynic in me cannot help but ask “For how long though?”

Whilst limited to VAR events , and it has to be otherwise a referees decision not involving VAR is no longer final, what the Review has done is to introduce transparency and if behaviour is being observed and is known to be, then the behaviour changes.

A master stroke by WC for me.

I wonder if it was his idea alone or did unhappy clubs with reason to be unhappy contribute?

McCaff
February 16, 2025 11:03 am

Auldheid…I’ve no issue with a system where the referee’s decision is final. But the system is there to assist referees and make the final decision more accurate. If VAR chooses not to involve themselves as they know a decision is wrong but will adversely affect a favoured team then these VAR decisions are as important (in a review sense) than those chosen to be highlighted in the programme.
As I intimated, Collum seems to have gotten some stuff right but there’s still a way to go.

St Tams,McCaff,
I wouldn’t boo any Celtic player and I am keen for idah to succeed. I just think he could do more off the ball. He’ll need to if he wants to play every week in a Brendan Rodgers team. He’s already been clear he doesn’t value a striker by his amount of goals, it’s how he fits into the system.
That has just reminded me that I never even booed Boyata after he refused to play. I actually don’t know how I managed that. Maybe it was the wrath of CCB sitting next to me. He has always made it clear to us you never boo Celtic players!!

ATOB…yip, I’ve never booed a player or left a game early, apart from the time I took my wee girl, 6 at the time, to a night game in October and she poured a full cup of coke all over herself!! Even I couldn’t bring myself to make wait the last 20 minutes until the game finished! 🤪
Anyway, as is established and accepted (by most) we all see the game differently. Idah, to my eyes, is working his socks off for himself and the team but his inexperience is showing. He’s using a helluva lot of energy making the wrong runs – too deep to really influence game, too early and caught off – he’s got the potential to be a good mix of strength and guile but he needs to learn when and how. The ‘when’ is probably more important than the ‘how’ at the moment. But he’s still young with not a great deal of experience and he’s coming on leaps and bounds in the last couple of months.
3 Champion’s League goals is not to be sniffed at, by the way!

McCaaf, ATOB, St Tams

On Idah. I have defended him here – 22 goals in 13 months for a ‘fringe’ striker is decent, very decent in truth and is a more eloquent defence than I can mount on his behalf. However he gets caught offside too much for me and too often that has been his own fault . He was 24 last week and has made around 200 appearances in senior football so excusing weaknesses in his game on the grounds of youth or inexperience don’t really cut it.

Brendan Rodgers has a pretty good record in improving players- Broony, James Forrest, CalMac, Stuart Armstrong and even Boyata improved out of sight in the not so distant past and more recently Daizen Maeda, Nicolas Kuhn and Matt O’Riley have blossomed. There have been the odd player who has stalled though- Gary Mackay-Steven and Kyogo IMO – and it is as much up to Adam Idah to learn and listen as it to Brendan Rodgers to provide wisdom. The clock ticks.
