Hail! Hail! Heroes!!!

Morning, all.

Difficult to remember when I’ve felt so deflated after a Celtic match. Difficult to remember when I’ve felt so proud either. Every one of our players out there put in the shift that I asked for in yesterday’s article. Give us your 100%, and then give us that bit more. They did that. All of them. And came so so close to beating Bayern in regulation time and pushing them to extra time.

Every one of them deserves to be remembered for their heroics last night, and I’m sure the match will live long in the memory of all who were there or watching on TV. It was relentless, yet it was far from all one-way traffic. The match stats are all firmly loaded in Bayern’s favour, but the truth is somewhat different.

We had four very good chances in the first quarter of the game-a dreadful effort close-in from Kühn being the pick of them. Score even one of them, and who knows how the game would have gone? As it was, we weathered the storm, absorbed everything that the home side could throw at us while causing them some grief whenever we got the opportunity. And we had a few of them!

Our starting XI took a blow around the hour mark when Jota caught a sore one in the eye and had to come off. Idah however was already stripped for action, so the injury probably only brought forward a planned substitution by a smidgin. It meant that Maeda, a constant menace for the home centre-backs, was pushed to his favoured wide left position. And he soon caused some damage.

Coming off his wing to make an interception as Bayern played around in deep areas,he tackled first Upemecano then Kim to push the loose ball to Kühn on the edge of the area. He too shrugged off a challenge as he took a touch before coolly slotting into the corner to give us the lead. 63 minutes into the second half, and honours are even. All to play for.

Of course, we knew that Bayern would then throw everything at us to an even greater extent than before. If we thought it was backs to the wall before this, it was the bloody Alamo after it! Schmeichel was performing heroics whenever required, AJ was making goal-saving tackles just as the forward was about to slide the ball into the net. CCV and his Trusty sidekick were beating off the high balls, while our midfield were occupied in the middle of our box just kicking it anywhere they could.

There was little point in doing much else-everyone was back helping out where they were most needed! Problem with that plan though is always that the ball comes straight back to you, as we were finding out-even though we could do damn all about it. I confess that for the last ten minutes or so, I was fixated by the clock in the top left corner of the screen, and it seemed to be advancing very slowly indeed.

That was just me watching on TV anaw, imagine how the players must have felt! And if those last ten minutes of normal time seemed to be caught in a time-warp, the four minutes of added time seemed like an eternity! Or, at least the first three minutes did.

For that is when Bayern got their equaliser. Finally breaching our lines, and as the ball squirmed around, two yards from our goal, CCV stuck out a desperate leg to divert it away from danger. Sadly, he could only divert it against the onrushing shin of recent sub Davies, AJ’s international colleague who will never score a softer or scrappier goal if he plays till he’s a hunner.

The ref, who seemed reluctant to rule in our favour all night, was also reluctant to allow us the 45 or so seconds that should have been remaining, and blew the whistle straight after we restarted the game. By that time, I doubt it mattered much anyway. The goal had knocked the stuffing out of the players and every Celtic fan watching. We knew we had come so far, come so close. But we knew we just didn’t have it in us to get a winner in such a short time.

Bayern once again celebrated drawing against us as though they had won the actual tournament, which would have brought back memories of twenty-odd years ago for Martin O’Neill and Neil Lennon as they watched from their positions in the media area. The whole enormity of that last-gasp equaliser certainly brought back memories of other hard luck tales of yesteryear, but let’s take nothing away from the performance other than that our players gave their all over a two-legged tie with one of the finest teams in Europe-and gave them one helluva scare.

Have our performances in Europe this season been enough to announce that we are back as a force to be reckoned with? Well, that’s a subject for another day. Maybe on Friday when emotions aren’t running quite so high, once the adrenalin levels subside to their normal levels. Let’s leave it at that, with the knowledge that there’s at least one top team in Europe knows we aren’t to be taken lightly!

Unfortunately, I never managed to see the game.
By all accounts we put in a fantastic performance.
We just need to build on this for next season and not break this team up.

Auldheid…fair do’s! It’s not how I read it, though. From my perspective, and from my reading of the room, Mags knows exactly how to read the room and knows which buttons to press to elicit a certain response. It’s why her invective is so regular and unchanging. She needs no explanation nor excuses, she just does! She’s not angry, she’s just a naughty girl.
Explanations, such as those you offered, serve only to allow her more room to manoeuvre. That’s where I think you do yourself a disservice.
Let’s not get into a huge discussion about this, it really doesn’t warrant it. 🙏

It’s all very well seeking a Thomas Aquinas doctrine that affirms and values each member of our community, recognising the dignity and respecting the unique nature of each individual.

There are times, however, when certain individuals shouldn’t receive that recognition.
They should be taken to task for their relentless bitterness and bile.

He is granted too much leeway and like any indulged person malignant in nature takes advantage because he knows he can.

I’ll call him out every time I have the misfortune to come across him.

Dermot Desmond was in attendance in Munich last night. We can only hope that he is now even more Team Brendan than Team Peter.
===/
The policies that team Peter followed under DD have done their job.
Built up enough cash in the bank to enable a change in policy by diminishing or removing the consequences of failing to qualify.

FSR is hobbling R2ngers wage competitiveness meaning less risk of not winning the title in order to qualify.
Then there is new CL format which makes the CL more financially rewarding.

With all those factors at play the explanation I’m taking is that DD was aware of the changes and sought out BR to make the best of the opportunities the changes delivered.

If we look more at the policies and the conditions that create them rather than the individuals whose responsibility it is to execute the policies then our understanding of motives improves.

We might not like the policies but we would be clearer on the direction of travel.

DD will have had his own reasons for appointing PL based on the direction of travel DD wants to follow and why, but since the CL is where the money is to be made why would DD not want a change in policy?

The improvement is incremental but there has been improvement and my hope is BR sticks around another 3 years to cement Celtic’s place in Europe as a competitive club.

Morning All

Don’t think I’ve been as gutted at a final whistle of a Celtic game since I was a child- at Seville I was too raging at Porto and on Black Sunday 2 years later I was more pissed off with our team than anything.

Last night we played way better than I thought we were capable against a pretty good team (by any standards). But we still got put out and although we played really well for most of the two games some familiar failings in Europe remain- we miss good chances ( 4 in the first quarter last night) and concede goals at the end of halves. But I do not want to be too critical- we are a better team than 1 year ago. Better to watch, slicker, more resilient – we look as good in Europe as we have since Henrik left.

In the short term I hope there is no ‘hangover’ going into the rest of the domestic campaign. Agonising European losses such as last night have sometimes a negative impact and I can think of better places to resume than Easter Road although hopefully the extra day to recover will help us go into this game recharged both physically and mentally.

I hope that Celtic can, on the park, continue to get the job done on the home front with the same panache and efficiency that we have displayed in most games since the collapse at Ibrox on the 2nd of January. I hope that off the Park, Celtic are looking to continue to develop the team- even in the emotional aftermath of the match Brendan Rodgers was talking of the need to strengthen. Other than perhaps Kuhn I am not sure that we have too many players other clubs will be queuing up to buy and it would be a shame if a squad that seems to actually be learning how to play at the higher levels (instead of just saying they will learn) is broken up too quickly.

The money Celtic has in the bank should not just be there to soften the blow if we fail to qualify for the Champions’ League, it should be there to make sure that we do qualify. Last night was a glimpse of the level we can play at- I hope that in the future last night is not seen as a high watermark but a starting off for a period when we really do compete in Europe. Those who run Celtic surely cannot think it is wise to return a strategy of looking back the way over its shoulders too what Rangers or whatever want to call Basketcase FC are doing but instead to look forward and see what we can do

Said at the time here on the blog – that wee Club Brugge team were the best side we’ve faced in years.

I know many were disappointed at the draw result, however the fact that they couldn’t defeat us just goes to show how much this Celtic side has improved/progressed.

More than a few of their players I reckon we could have possibly have signed in January – impossible now though because their value will be went through the roof.

Anyway, all credit to Brendan Rodgers – honestly couldn’t believe how good Celtic were last night.
Best European performance in decade.
No panic whatsoever.

I said the other day that this team is nowhere near the team that lost heavily in Dortmund.

That is the rate of progress that Brendan is capable of making with a group of players who are totally buying into what he is trying to do.

In his post match interview he said something that I’ve been waiting and hoping for the last few months, he briefly touched on his plans to establish ourselves as a credible Champions league outfit.

That immediately lifted my spirits, because I’m fully aware of how quickly our football world could implode if we were to appoint the wrong manager, as we have seen enough times @ Parkhead!

As much as I like winning in Scotland, especially having a manager that basically guarantees success, I am now really excited at the thought of where Brendan is capable of taking us in continental competition.

Give Brendan one of those Brian Clough contracts he used to give to his players 😁 It was basically a blank.piece of paper with the guy’s signature, that would get filled in only if the player had signed it.

I really do believe that we have one of the very best coaches in the planet, and I now believe he fully intends finding out how high up the food chain he can take us. Should be our NO1 priority!!

MOTM? As ever, Brendan Rodgers 💚

What a day it was yesterday. Cold but brilliant sunshine and a fabulous family atmosphere in Munich town centre. The troops blending in with the locals and the non football tourists added immensely to the occasion for me. The support for the tourists also. Friendly , jovial, civilized.

A reunion with friends of mine from Munich, Glasgow, Vienna, Ireland and America and they all got on like a house on fire. The Gastronomy absolute perfection. Friends of mine who didn’t know each other becoming friends with one another. Contact details exchanged and new relationships germinating ( excuse the pun )

Only to be surpassed by our performance and the away support. Utterly magnificent. Then to find out I had made Scottish national television. Fame at last. It’s been a slog 😆

Thanks for the link guys xx

Their goal was a hard one to take but not unexpected. If we had managed to take them to extra time they would have eventually dispatched us. Squad depth and quality. Too many times we have experienced the last-late minute sickener.

We were all frozen and the Bayern fans had their gas peep well and truly lowered. They were very releaved knowing unexpectedly that they had been in a game

Eintracht play Bayern on Sunday was another reason for longing for extra time. Hopefully Celtic will have taken some of their energy. Celtic and Eintracht in the CL next season. Make it fucking happen. We have played each other once. In 1952 in New York. Celtic won but mon to fuck time this game was taking place. If it were to happen off course I would be fully for Celtic.

Their last minute winner did mean however that their was a chance for me to catch my midnight train back to Frankfurt. Marvelesque heroics performed by myself to get to the main train station with ten minutes to spare. The train was then delayed by two hours. Recieved photos while waiting in the delayed train of my mates still partying and again this morning from the friends who I introduced to one another having a hungover brunch. Laughs and smiles. Good for them. Jealous as fuck.

We need to stop selling players to the highest bidder and say No. We don’t need the money. Brendan has proven he can build a team at this level. We have came a long way from Dortmund. Onwards and upwards has a more meaningful and authentic ring to it this morning. We are a CL team to be feared now if we back Brendan more. More money and reputation building kudos and not just off the pitch to be had. Incremental improvements year upon year. We need to it’s the future.

Just do it.

Well that outstanding performance from the Bhoys last night surprised me. I was one of those who thought we may well be the recipients of another Germanic pumping. How wrong was i? An absolute masterclass in playing away from home, not a failure on the field all following Brendan’s strategic plan to the letter. A brilliant performance but a gut wrenching finale, I was minded of Patrick Moynihan’s quote at the final whistle ‘ To be Irish is to know, in the end, the world will break your heart’.
Now for a wee bit of negitivity. As MO’N said last night the £36 mill question is will Celtic build on this season’s CL campaign, will we get the quality on the bench Brendan alluded to? I thought our subs weakened us last night, perhaps because they replaced 2 of our most effective attack minded players – Kuhn & Jota. Will Celtic refuse the inevitable offers for Nicholas and Diazen (with the obvious caveat that the players haven’t requested a move) will we invest properly and strengthen for another tilt at the CL and build on this season and perhaps more importantly will Brendan stay? Recent history suggests that the answer to most of those questions is a resounding no but we live in hope.

Never been into stats within football, as tend to be used in misleading terms, to much for my liking.

Yet struggling to get my head around, over the course of the bayern tie, we had so many huge moments within the tie, that totally went against ourselves.
Few very costly mistakes, that were self inflicted.
The timing of the goals conceded were so unnatural.
The wrong end of many decisions made by 2 mibs.
Yet less than 30 seconds away from taking one of the pre tournaments favourites, to extra time?

So to come so close to overcoming all the challenges we faced over the course of the tie.
Is nothing short of an amazing achievement gained from each and every one of our bhoys for there imput, in achieving one of our greatest European tie, and most memorable of recent times imo?

It would only be fitting for this team to complete the treble now, as certainly warrants such a Celtic team in doing so also.

Yet the price of success can come at a cost, more so in footballing terms, regardless of the financial rewards involved also.
No doubt that many of our players have raised their own profile over the course of this CL campaign, and could well have caught the eye of many admirers for there efforts.
In return, a good few potential targets could well decide that a move to ourselves, is now becoming a great opportunity for themselves also?

The lack of availability for quality over the course of the bayern tie, was massive for ourselves, especially last night, without to many fresh legs to call upon, for a match of such magnitude.
The value of an overall squad is becoming more evident in playing terms, with the extra demands placed upon so many key players for ourselves, going forward.

So hopefully it will get addressed during the summer, with becoming a bigger requirement, within todays game.
Not quite at the stage of nearly having 2 teams in operation, at times during the course of a season, but not a million miles short either.

So with the changing face of football for big clubs like ourselves, then changes will be required to how we operate in future also, to match the demands within our club.
Already this summer, is looking like some amount of changes will be required within squad building?
Wouldn’t like to call how it will unfold, but looking forward moreso for another glorious treble to be achieved beforehand imo?

Spot on in terms of achievement against the odds and I hope the future is green and white in Europe.

Raising our profile is a double edged sword. It makes us attractive to young players with promise at an affordable price but makes same players after 2 to 3 seasons attractive to clubs with more buying power which should be part of the cost consideration in player trading.

Something Ajax have experienced.

The way I read the Mags posts was very simple. We have been short changed for 15 years and I even said that we break our transfer record twice in one window and low and behold we start to complete.

The frustration is that we have spent 15 years of wasted time, and the just enough to beat the huns has been a total disaster.

We should have always been looking to be the best we can be, not looking to just being better than them across the river. I don’t think anyone could argue with this.

We will see who we sell and who we get in, in the summer.

And only time will tell if we wait till the last day of window as we did with Schlupp. Can you imagine if he was in in the first day and was match ready for Bayern at home.

It might have been a different story and It might not, but we dragged our heels and the question needs to be asked WHY?

5 years of GT the weak link in our defence, 5 years of backing off. 5 years of watching a defender not being able to tackle. 5 years of watching a defender not being able to head a ball.

Last night Schlupp did all that and more, didn’t get bullied, didn’t get flustered, didn’t need Daizen to cover his arse.

We still need to demand more and we should still be allowed to ask for more.

Played well and the players deserve credit, but we always need to improve.

Those who have dipped into their own pockets will know this, but how do they break it to the fans, whose expectations are utterly irrational? They will never accept that it’s not Glasgow Rangers, so the people left holding the keys are in an almost impossible situation.
