Hail! Hail! Heroes!!!

Morning, all.

Difficult to remember when I’ve felt so deflated after a Celtic match. Difficult to remember when I’ve felt so proud either. Every one of our players out there put in the shift that I asked for in yesterday’s article. Give us your 100%, and then give us that bit more. They did that. All of them. And came so so close to beating Bayern in regulation time and pushing them to extra time.

Every one of them deserves to be remembered for their heroics last night, and I’m sure the match will live long in the memory of all who were there or watching on TV. It was relentless, yet it was far from all one-way traffic. The match stats are all firmly loaded in Bayern’s favour, but the truth is somewhat different.

We had four very good chances in the first quarter of the game-a dreadful effort close-in from Kühn being the pick of them. Score even one of them, and who knows how the game would have gone? As it was, we weathered the storm, absorbed everything that the home side could throw at us while causing them some grief whenever we got the opportunity. And we had a few of them!

Our starting XI took a blow around the hour mark when Jota caught a sore one in the eye and had to come off. Idah however was already stripped for action, so the injury probably only brought forward a planned substitution by a smidgin. It meant that Maeda, a constant menace for the home centre-backs, was pushed to his favoured wide left position. And he soon caused some damage.

Coming off his wing to make an interception as Bayern played around in deep areas,he tackled first Upemecano then Kim to push the loose ball to Kühn on the edge of the area. He too shrugged off a challenge as he took a touch before coolly slotting into the corner to give us the lead. 63 minutes into the second half, and honours are even. All to play for.

Of course, we knew that Bayern would then throw everything at us to an even greater extent than before. If we thought it was backs to the wall before this, it was the bloody Alamo after it! Schmeichel was performing heroics whenever required, AJ was making goal-saving tackles just as the forward was about to slide the ball into the net. CCV and his Trusty sidekick were beating off the high balls, while our midfield were occupied in the middle of our box just kicking it anywhere they could.

There was little point in doing much else-everyone was back helping out where they were most needed! Problem with that plan though is always that the ball comes straight back to you, as we were finding out-even though we could do damn all about it. I confess that for the last ten minutes or so, I was fixated by the clock in the top left corner of the screen, and it seemed to be advancing very slowly indeed.

That was just me watching on TV anaw, imagine how the players must have felt! And if those last ten minutes of normal time seemed to be caught in a time-warp, the four minutes of added time seemed like an eternity! Or, at least the first three minutes did.

For that is when Bayern got their equaliser. Finally breaching our lines, and as the ball squirmed around, two yards from our goal, CCV stuck out a desperate leg to divert it away from danger. Sadly, he could only divert it against the onrushing shin of recent sub Davies, AJ’s international colleague who will never score a softer or scrappier goal if he plays till he’s a hunner.

The ref, who seemed reluctant to rule in our favour all night, was also reluctant to allow us the 45 or so seconds that should have been remaining, and blew the whistle straight after we restarted the game. By that time, I doubt it mattered much anyway. The goal had knocked the stuffing out of the players and every Celtic fan watching. We knew we had come so far, come so close. But we knew we just didn’t have it in us to get a winner in such a short time.

Bayern once again celebrated drawing against us as though they had won the actual tournament, which would have brought back memories of twenty-odd years ago for Martin O’Neill and Neil Lennon as they watched from their positions in the media area. The whole enormity of that last-gasp equaliser certainly brought back memories of other hard luck tales of yesteryear, but let’s take nothing away from the performance other than that our players gave their all over a two-legged tie with one of the finest teams in Europe-and gave them one helluva scare.

Have our performances in Europe this season been enough to announce that we are back as a force to be reckoned with? Well, that’s a subject for another day. Maybe on Friday when emotions aren’t running quite so high, once the adrenalin levels subside to their normal levels. Let’s leave it at that, with the knowledge that there’s at least one top team in Europe knows we aren’t to be taken lightly!

On taking offense.

I was accused elsewhere of avoiding responsibility for the offense my posts sometimes caused, but my position was influenced by what follows.

To be clear I thought the post by Mags was correctly viewed by readers as offensive, but this is not about Mags, it is about us as a community about taking responsibility for our posts not avoiding it.

” According to common understanding, the person “responsible” for taking offense where none was intended is the individual who chooses to be offended; meaning they are interpreting a statement or action as offensive even though it was not meant that way, placing the onus on them for their reaction.
Key points to remember:
Taking offense is a choice:
While someone might say something that could be interpreted as insensitive, the decision to be offended by it ultimately lies with the listener.
Intention matters:
If someone did not intend to cause offense, then the responsibility for taking offense falls on the person who perceives it that way” It aligns with the following bus stop story.

The story that explains my stance is the bus running past the bus stop leaving 3 guys stranded and late for work. Guy 1 returns to the house in a rage at the driver and needs hospitalised after a mild heart attack. Guy 2 goes home and pens a letter of complaint to bus company and goes back out to wait for next bus. Guy 3 calculates that if he walks to work he will only be 10mins late as opposed to 30 if he waits for next bus, it’s a nice day and he could do with the exercise.
The point is none of the 3 guys knew why driver drove past but that event triggered a reaction in them the driver might be unaware of. So what happens next is not down to the driver but each individual reacting or responding to a triggering event.

My intent in posting the above is because at the end of the day not one of us knows for sure the intent of a post although previous posts guide us, but to be aware that the meaning put on a post is subject to our own personal perception and to check that out.
What in the post I took offense to trigger my response? Was it intended to do that? That can influence the tone of reply.

All in the interests of good communication.

Auldheid…I’ll honour you with a reply just one more time on this issue; my take, and only my take as others have expressed their own thoughts, is that the constant invective spouted by Mags undermines the blog constantly. Now, if we’re all offended, and my belief is that is exactly what Mags hopes we are then it is not whether or not we are offended is what is the intention of the post! That in itself is wholly different from the analogy you posted.
On a more basic level…she is what she is and I tend to skim read her comments never really expecting anything other than the usual shite. I’m seldom disappointed nor surprised.

BR post match interview where he sets out his plan to make Celtic a seasoned ( love his choice of word) club to take on the likes of Bayern.

I think that is why DD got him and why PL is irrelevant in terms of stopping that plan.

How could he and if it makes PL richer why would he?

It does not make sense anymore.

Greetings from a Baltic DC. Wind chill of minus 14C.
Some random thoughts on yesterday’s events:
BMCUWP.
You did say it would be hard to write today’s lead. Well, you did a great job. I’ve said it before, but we don’t tell you and MAHE that half enough.

I didn’t know what to feel last night. Emotions were really mixed. I felt gutted, proud, relieved, pissed at the Board for not ensuring we had a stronger bench, but most of all I felt that Celtic had gained a huge amount of respect throughout Europe. Well, apart from assholes like Kris Boyd and Jason Cundy, but who cares about them?

I think that respect is what many fans yearn for. When you recollect how we were regarded from 1967 to 1970, how we were requested by Di Stefano for his testimonial, how Racing Club, the best team in South America at the time considered we were the toughest opponent they had, then compare that to how we were viewed after abysmal failures against Utrecht, Sparta Prague, Cluj, Ferencvaros, and so many others, the gap is huge. I don’t think our Board have any appreciation whatsoever that Celtic fans yearn for respect.

We got it in spades last night, from the German media, fans, and many surprised TV pundits, and for many reasons. Since the glory days of the late 60’s, I have never seen a Celtic team in an away tie so calm under pressure, and retain possession so well. In so many past games, we would gain possession, then lose it almost immediately, and in panic mode. I watched carefully last night. Every time Kaspar or a defender had the ball, one or two Celtic players moved into space to give an option for passing. And because we always had an option, there was zero panic. It was a superb performance, and every player was magnificent. Schlupp was first class, a physical specimen who can jump, head and tackle. We must retain him. If KT remains free of injury, Schlupp will be a great option in midfield.

Somebody posted earlier that the Great Mustachioed One was in Munich. Well, I hope Desmondo noticed how thin our bench was. After Idah came on, Yang was a forced change, and Brendan had no one other than McGowan to come on and influence the game. It is absolutely imperative that we strengthen the squad in the summer, and have the newbies ready to go in the qualifiers.

Talking of which, keep your eye out at the weekend on the following games, which will go a long way in deciding who will be in the qualifiers in the summer.

Saturday: Rikeka vs Dinamo Zagreb
Sunday: Viktoria Plzen vs Slavia Prague
Olympiakos vs PAOK
In the Serbian League, Red Star Belgrade are out of sight, so they will qualify.

Lastly, we should be wary of Easter Road on Saturday. The players gave everything last night, Hibs have not lost in 12 games, and were all over us the first half hour at Celtic Park. It’s a potential banana skin.

That’s not true mate. Celtic clearly stated that our 3-0 win over them in May 12 was ” the last ever Old Firm game”.

It’s not about Mags anymore it’s about us all.

What I was hoping for was that any response would be about the message in respect of where responsibility lies when replying to any post any individual found offensive, did that get anyone thinking?

Not about Mags.

If the message is taken on board would it lead to less misunderstanding?

Auldheid,

That one line in that interview was the beginning of me getting over last night’s result.

I’m fairly certain Brendan didn’t come back because he has unfinished business with Motherwell and Ross county, so it is his career ambition to make us a credible force in Europe again ..I think that’s an easy assumption to make.

I think he is probably a wee bit ahead of where he thought we’d be at this stage ..probably imagined it taking a bit of time, so after his interview i was fairly laid back about the prospects of Brendan giving us his best years.

Still think that would be the best result we might achieve this season.

I also believe he is reaching the peak of his career, and will want to leave a gleaming legacy over the next number of years. Would we really be allowing him to continually pay in the region of £10m for players if he hadn’t privately indicated his intention to hang around?

Looking around there doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of great managers, or at least obvious to me, it would be mental not to make our great coach as comfortable as we can. I have always believed he would go on to prove himself to be among the very best!

Like we did with Jock – Give the man the keys!!

He could not have that unswerving plan if DD did not support him unswervingly which surely means PL can only support the plan. If not why not and how? It will make him and DD more money.

Now that our campaign has finished, and considering I have bumped my gums for years about our under performance in Europe (for a whole variety of reasons) it is a great pleasure to say we are back as a proper champions league team.

We are competing instead of participating, That’s all we ask.

It’s up to all concerned to build on this. Get through last night was another 9m. We have allegedly generated 60m so far.

There is more money to made at this level than in selling our best players. I get many see us as a stepping stone but if we became a regular competitor at this level, they might stay a bit longer or we can attract higher quality replacements.

That was quite a read back!

One thing I dont quite get …(okay, more than one thing…)

Unless I missed something, Mags’ posts last night werent much different from his usual … so, why the blow up now?

Is it his message or his language that is upsetting people? Personally, I’m not a fan of his language, and he and I have discussed this, so I am not saying anything about him that I haven’t said too him.

Not that I am too offended by a word, but I think it makes it too easy for people to dismiss his posts. But his message hasn’t changed much from what I can see, which I think is his point … and in that respect, he aint wrong.

On that note, McCaff … I responded to your question a few days ago, but when I went back later I couldnt see it. Possibly it got lost in the ether, but didnt want you to think I was ignoring you.

We know what he thinks of the board and their actions over the last two decades. He has no right to accuse all Celtic supporters of the same.

Hi Auldheid:
Hope you are well. Glad I gave you a giggle.😊 I think a good big yin mostly beats a good wee yin. ( I make exceptions for truly world class players like Jinky, Messi, Maradona, or even Strachan😊).
Schlupp dealt with Olise far better than GT did, and made headed clearances that the wee man would never have reached. He is also not easily brushed off the ball. He was impressive.

I really hope you are right, Auldheid. It has often puzzled me how DD in the past has sanctioned PL decisions ( such as nepotism ) that have held the Club back from earning more from the Champions League, or why he has tolerated ineptitude that he would not in the companies that generate his fortune.

As for PL supporting BR “unswervingly”, that strikes me intuitively as an incongruous contrast in terms.😊. If he does, maybe he could instruct our CEO to get the finger out and get Brendan the players he needs, and tout suite, when he wants them?😊

If I may come in.

This is a guess on my part based on my own experience.

Mags is not just dissatisfied with what he sees at the Board’s codependency with R2ngers (that I think is at an end) but also at the support not acting to end it by taking action to make sure it happened. No more R2ngers no more toxicity in our game.

I’ve had similar disappointment but look to ongoing dialogue rather than confrontation with the support (my going back to the Christian ethos on which Celtic were founded).

I doubt that whilst Mags and I might, I say might, share similar emotions as I don’t know the beliefs that Mags has but suspect they differ.

I think that one day we will both find out but we will just agree to amicably differ because our experience differs but at least we will benefit from sharing it.

Finding out the true colour of the fence.

A wise man here in SC? Sure you got the right blog? 😀.

With regard to DDs past relationship with PL I think the mushroom theory applies as in PL kept DD in the dark and fed him shit whilst DD was preoccupied with his other social activities.

This is why I think so taken from something I was involved in.

Back in 2014 or so Phil Mac G contacted me to pass on something he was told by a Dublin contact he regularly mentioned in ensuing years.
Taking it as true what I was told was that DD asked PL what is this Res12 all about?
PLs reply was don’t worry it will be forgotten all about when Rangers return to SPL.

Phil thought he was providing me with something about PL’s trustworthiness I didn’t know but I was already aware by Celtics response to Res12 PL was not to be trusted.

In fact that was probably a factor that kept Res12 going for me. I wasn’t in the welcoming Rangers back camp that PL depended on.

But the point from foregoing is DD was happy for PL to run the show as PL wanted as long as the books balanced.

“The Daily Record has learned top-level discussions over a multi-million pound investment began before the turn of the year – and they are now believed to be at ‘an advanced stage’. And if an agreement can be thrashed out the Ibrox club stand to benefit from a major cash injection which would then fund a spending splurge in the summer transfer market”.
