Over the line

The teamsheet gave us a Calmac, Reo, Bernardo central midfield combination which wasn’t to my liking, but I was giddy as the ref blew the whistle. You can’t buy that feeling.

It slowly evaporated though as ‘the spectacle’ played out. One commentator referred to it as basketball like, but in truth it was a feast of bad passing from both sides leading to a poor game of ping-pong. When after 25 minutes it was clear this wouldn’t be a proper footballing affair, it was truly a case of just waiting for the ‘gotcha’ moment when one of the numerous slack passes lead to a deadly transition.

That fell to our opponents, the attacking support finally putting it in the net, and half-time suddenly became much more important at one goal down.

Liam emerged instead of Trusty which looked strange, but within a minute had shown his danger by flashing a corner header just wide. That was a sign of things to come as suddenly Celtic passed a bit better, moved with more intent, found a bit of rhythm and went probing,,they weren’t going down meekly thanks to the halftime rocket. On the back of being invigorated, we ‘hustled’ two goals.

In a twist of fate, Greg managed a deflected goal to atone for giving away the previous goal, and then Daizen managed to see, carve out, and finish the chance only he sniffed. It was sublime, it would be on any player’s highlight reel, harrying then some deft touches, first time wrong foot finish,,Diego would have been happy with it.

The fans went into raptures, but credit to our opponents they didn’t get rattled but rather stepped up again and a goal behind or not began carving out chances, one in particular saw Big Cam as a one man defense against 4 blue shirts and he managed to put it out for a corner saving the day.

Hence even though Kasper was having a great game, it came as no surprise when his goal was breached, the corner resulting from a slack pass intercepted in a dangerous area once again.

2-2 then and everything to play for only it’s our opponents looking rejuvenated and fancying a famous comeback victory. After an attack fizzled out Celtic went and did something they hadn’t done,,strung together a good passage of play and scored a team goal.

The right hand side combined and set free Engles close to the by-line, who produced a gem of a cut back to Kuhn who dispatched it with amplomb. Celtic were back baby, all we needed to do was hold out for 3 minutes or so.
We held out for 21 seconds.

R2ngers copied us in converting a team made chance, only theirs was route one football. Centre spot, quickly worked out wide, immediate deep cross,,,easy peasy.
It was farcical.
It was 3 apiece.

From then on a raft of subs didn’t really affect the game, Celtic looked as though they wanted the win and attacked the most throughout the closing stages and extra time, but R2ngers looked determined to take their chances on penalties, and so it passed.

At that stage I had mentally thrown my hands up in the air thinking it’s a crap shoot, whatever happens happens, but 3 things happened. Firstly Kasper had seemingly rolled his ankle collecting the ball earlier and needed a bit of treatment, then the blue half of Glasgow won both tosses to not only shoot in front of their own fans but win the option to go first. My belief honestly wavered as proceedings began.

I knew Adam and Arne could take good penalties so I’d no worries over them,,Reo however,,,he hits the ball hard yes but he had had another stinker, and failing would truly see him become the whipping boy.
Likewise Callum.
But all four scored, and Kasper had proved me wrong by saving one despite the ankle.
It all fell upon the shoulders of James Forrest.

Our longest serving player, decorated like a general, with fresh legs to boot, he strikes the ball well,,I awaited the baby faced assassin to make the long and lonely plod upfield to become an instant hero or villain.
His time had come, it was the obvious pick for big match winning penalty.
The camera pans and,,,oh shit.

A mop of dyed blond hair has the ball under his arm, a smile on his face, and the weight of the world on his shoulders. Flashes of Beckham staring down at the spot went through my head, imaginary scenes of a little boy in RowZ losing the final sip of his father instructed Bovril after being struck by the ball, visions of a bewildered look upon a Japanese face as he rubs both hands in an unnaturally coloured barnet.
What happened next shall never leave me, for as much as we ascribe him to be an instinctive player who screws up if given too much time to think about what happens next,,,he did it again.

Diego would have been proud of that penalty. Daizen ran up completely selling one corner until the very last minute, and when Butland committed himself to that save, Maeda simply adjusted last second and actually rolled the ball into the wide open free space in an exhibition of not only coolness but the footballing brain we thought he lacked.
Sorry Daizen, for what it’s worth I would have you in my starting 11, and you just proved once again why you’re called The Duracell Bunny.

The penalties, the goals, lifting the Cup clearly meant a lot to all involved, I’m delighted to have the trophy cabinet expanded because it actually is organically won as opined during the week,,,
BUT,,,
Ooft we cannot play games like that. That’s heart in the mouth stuff,,good teams don’t allow footballing ping-pong but shut it down. Now I admit our opposition were physical/rough as the yellow card count shows, but their general shape and tactics were not bettered over 120 minutes. That’s the type of game and intensity we should expect to come up against consistently in Europe, we must learn from that experience because a European team would have walked away with 3 points if we turned out that performance and offered up that many chances.

Kuhn was doubled up on, Maeda closely tagged, Callum man-marked, midfield and defense pressed fast and hard into mistake after mistake,,,it looks like ol Phillipe simply adopted our European opponents tactics and very nearly pulled it off successfully.

Both teams set pieces were woeful bar a few occasions, one of which lead to a goal. We gave the ball away constantly, especially under pressure, good sides can automatically pass into a zone they know the teammate will be occupying, if the wings aren’t working and the midfield is nullified/having an off day then our striker is out of the game and I barely recall Kyogos name getting mentioned,,,that’s not good.

On one level I feel our squad was exposed today, it’s deficiencies highlighted for all to see. I agree with those posters and every supporter who wondered about Reo staying on the park, I secretly hope Brendan is accessing him overall, because Bernardo is more consistent and Brendan previously brought up consistency as a big factor.
On one level consistency was achieved, we won after all, as we do most weeks bar one single blip,,but the form we all know this team is capable of once again evaded us for these 120 minutes plus.

Now we’ve lifted the trophy, now the trebles on-track, now the bonding season is complete,,will we kick on? Is this the springboard for bigger and better things?
I hope so.

Well done Bhoys, great ending to the first half of the season, you’ve made us proud.
Now please make the second half of the season an unforgettable one.

IMHO Trusty was hooked for Scales as he was contributing heehaw and hadn’t CCV been quick off the mark and get a tackle in Trusty would have gifted the Hun the opening goal with a school boy error square ball inside our own box. Sadly we learnt nothing from that and Taylor did exactly the same thing further up the park a few minutes later that lead to the Hun scoring. This is not the 1st time Auston has done something like this, in fact it is becoming a bit of a regular occurrence. Honestly can’t see much between either Liam or Auston both of them having regular WTF moments.

BR himself said Scales was brought on to move us upfield more.
The suicidal square balls across the back will continue unless our tactics are varied and the midfield free themselves up to receive ball.
On here I am often told CMac occupies 2 men to free up space but there was no evidence of such as the Huns just held position and waited for our defensive mistakes.
We lack onfield leadership.

Now that the dust has settled, along with my blood pressure a few questions. We’re they good? Or were we bad. Well, they had a plan, and stuck to it very well, albeit a completely negative way of approaching a Cu Final.I couldn’t really see what our plan was apart from keep ball, which we couldn’t even do properly, Taylor being the biggest culprit, but they were all guilty. Conclusion, a bit of both(really hate to give them credit for anything). One consolation is we won in the end, and that’s all that matters I suppose…but improvements are needed. Think McCowan needs an extended run for example. This time last year we started to stutter, we need to keep that gap going into January, as we know what awaits at the bigotdome.

First class analysis Mahe.

Perhaps the match went in line with recent form, we are not as good as we were a month ago, and they are not as bad as they were back a few weeks ago. We are very rarely in top gear when December arrives. Struggle to get out of first gear at times.

Still, this morning all three domestic shiny things are back in the boardroom, we are 11 points clear in the league, and are one home win away from progressing to the next stage of the Champions League. Could be worse. It has been worse, a lot worse.

Wonder if the Real Madrid squad, when they assemble for training today, have a bit of chat about a new name at the top of the world’s most successful club ? Probably not. A nice myth to put to bed though. Maybe Mr Lawwell will push for a statue of Mr Lawwell, for outside the front door ? Who will start the StatueForPeter Go Fund Me page ? I can think of a few .

A bit of player trading in January might just provide the fuel required for the second half of the season. A few in and a few out, the opportunity will be there, we cannot let it pass.

When I saw the staring lineup, I was worried.

Hatate and Taylor should not be starting .
How Bernardo was hooked before Hatate, only Brendan can answer that one.

Time for McCowan, Bernardo ,Valle and Idah to get an extended run in the team.

January transfer window is going to be crucial.
Left back , midfield and wide man required.

Part of the criticism of Celtic comes from unwillingness to accept R2ngers have improved over the last few weeks.

How many games have the lost since the draw with Dundee Utd domestically and Europe?

They are not losing or drawing the games that have created the 11 point gap.

Perhaps if we were to acknowledge that the opposition do play a part in the performance of our players the criticism might wane just a tad.

I’ll give BR this, he saw how ineffective Trusty was and his tendency to pass the buck rather than the ball.

The effect was almost immediate , two ginger hairs width off a Scales goal.

Re the midfield we are crying out for a ball winner, Bernardo is the nearest we have and his substitution is puzzling as Engles couldn’t order a fish supper never mind tackle one, on which note he needs to bulk up to prevent the kind of goal that led to 2 2 equaliser.
In the meantime we have to get used to what we have, which at the end of the day is still getting results.

I was wondering what WC would say and it will be interesting to hear if Clyde SSB mention it tonight.

My view is that the initial foul was outside the box and the media have manufactured another myth to keep their codependency relationship with R2ngers alive.

Ernie Lynch was spot on in his observation that if they can create the same club myth for codependent reasons then manufacturing a false penalty claim is a dawdle.

The video shows what happened before any tug and it was a foul tackle by Scales outside the box with no Cerny foot on the line.

Just another myth creating attempt by the media by taking focus away from the tackle to give R2ngers fans an excuse for being beat.

I’ve raised issue of WC statement on X with Clyde SSB and blue-sky but not sure if the Clyde ssb account there is genuine.

There is a whole blog calling out the media around this attempt to publish fake news.

Mahe,

Congrats on a great leader. Thoroughly enjoyed your blend of emotion and the factual!

The penalty/non penalty incidence seems to have emerged as a topic of discussion. Why select that one incident rather than many others? Surely, it is the overall performance of the ref and officials that really matters? Both sides could pick out individual incidents that did not go their way yet the media are fuelling just one incident. Is eight, yes, eight, yellow cards not worthy of discussion? Does eight yellows not suggest that a red was likely to follow, or, should I say, follow follow?

If we are to highlight shirt pulling should it not be for the whole game?

There needs to be an effective promotional response to these kinds of campaigns. I hope someone within the club realises this soon. Otherwise, the future will be framed by them.

Seen a bit more of the game now. They kicked long and pressed us as we tried our usual tip tap passing across the field often deep in our own half. How many times do we need to be caught playing like that with never a thought of playing it long.
Perhaps Kyogo is part of the issue as we can’t expect him to hold the ball up with his back to goal.

The more you watch this, the more you see. One Celtic player fell to the turf immediately after Maeda’s penalty, but I couldn’t make out who it was. Kuhn got the angle wrong for his pass to Engels before the third goal, and Arne did very well to cut it back, as Idah was probably offside.

Look at the unalloyed joy of the players running back to the Celtic end at the finish ( relief was possibly part of that emotion ). Daezen can look very impassive, but he was certainly not that after his 2 huge moments. Good to see.

Frodshambhoy I don’t think Kyogo is the issue at us not adopting a ball over the top tactic, as we have 3 very quick players in Khun Kyogo Daizen,

I tend to think it’s more a BR instruction to try play through, and he doesn’t favour a long ball approach.

However he needs a plan B when the tippy tap side to side does not work, as they played 2 banks of 5 on the halfway line yesterday to congest our midfield play makers, and other teams have done it to us too, and it cost us 2 goals yesterday

ASWGL,

I agree Sevco had the Celtic game plan figured. Flood the midfield, a high press when Celtic are taking kickouts, and double team the wide players. The only player consistently able to break the press was our keeper. Others pass the responsibility on to another player behind the press.

We did little to counteract their attacking play which was most effective with a fast break down our left side. Goal 1 was a daft mistake which either of Maeda, Trusty or Taylor were capable of making. Goals 2,3 came from crosses from the left side of our defence. Cut out the cross, eliminate the opportunity.

Still, it made for an exciting game.

In recent weeks our off the ball movement has declined.
This has led to fewer passing options and less potency.
This is understandable with the recent chopping and changing of squad rotation.
There have been too many at once and it has impacted self belief.
We still have the slick moments producing goals but they have become fewer.
Need to pick a settled side and use subs based on how game is shaping.

A not inconsiderable number of us were concerned at the lack of defensive cover on our left side, and this was glaringly shown up at their 3rd goal, when Taylor was conspicuous by his absence which allowed Černý to make the telling cross. Maeda was left horribly exposed.
It seems Brendan noticed this too, as Valle was brought on for extra time, a move which immediately shored up the position. Brendan, in my mind, made an error by not rectifying the problem, which we could all see, earlier.
We should now see Valle starting matches ahead of Taylor. The inverted full back has run its course.
Anyway, don’t we all just love giving the Huns hope then cruelly snatching it away? I do. 😃😃

We are all wrong. It was a penalty:

Bobby Madden doubles down on ‘factual’ Celtic vs Rangers penalty call.
Hitting back at outrage over his opinion on the incident, Madden posted on Instagram: “I’ve commented on decisions for over a year and this is one of the very few that are factual.
“No debate, no subjectively, no ambiguity. There is holding inside the penalty area.
“Free kick was awarded and should be changed to a penalty. Quite simple and It’s difficult to understand why people are so upset with that opinion.

“As it’s a factual decision there would be no need for referee to go to monitor. Advice should have come from VAR, referee makes tv signal and awards penalty. That’s it.

“The referee team had an excellent game and this is a very tough call live. VAR has to identify the offence, again, this is why VAR was introduced.

“Remember though, it’s only game of football ⚽️”

Afternoon all

As I said yesterday I did not see the game live and literally stayed out of my own flat until the penalty shoot out was over. From what I have seen we played well in patches but not that much better overall than v Hibs. Delighted we won but the midfield is not quite right. Bermardo is terrific on the ball and Engels isn’t as good in that respect but the Belgian seem a real asset off the ball. Reo needs to buck his ideas up. We need a better left back than we have.

One slightly odd thing went through my mind watching the 3rd R2FC goal was that Danilo was offside when the cross was struck. Maybe it’s memories of 2 seasons ago when every goal seemed likely to be overturned but I am certain had we scored it, it would have subjected to greater scrutiny than it waa and will be. Maybe I should start a campaign to have it expunged from the records.

Good luck Rebus
