Over the line
The teamsheet gave us a Calmac, Reo, Bernardo central midfield combination which wasn’t to my liking, but I was giddy as the ref blew the whistle. You can’t buy that feeling.
It slowly evaporated though as ‘the spectacle’ played out. One commentator referred to it as basketball like, but in truth it was a feast of bad passing from both sides leading to a poor game of ping-pong. When after 25 minutes it was clear this wouldn’t be a proper footballing affair, it was truly a case of just waiting for the ‘gotcha’ moment when one of the numerous slack passes lead to a deadly transition.
That fell to our opponents, the attacking support finally putting it in the net, and half-time suddenly became much more important at one goal down.
Liam emerged instead of Trusty which looked strange, but within a minute had shown his danger by flashing a corner header just wide. That was a sign of things to come as suddenly Celtic passed a bit better, moved with more intent, found a bit of rhythm and went probing,,they weren’t going down meekly thanks to the halftime rocket. On the back of being invigorated, we ‘hustled’ two goals.
In a twist of fate, Greg managed a deflected goal to atone for giving away the previous goal, and then Daizen managed to see, carve out, and finish the chance only he sniffed. It was sublime, it would be on any player’s highlight reel, harrying then some deft touches, first time wrong foot finish,,Diego would have been happy with it.
The fans went into raptures, but credit to our opponents they didn’t get rattled but rather stepped up again and a goal behind or not began carving out chances, one in particular saw Big Cam as a one man defense against 4 blue shirts and he managed to put it out for a corner saving the day.
Hence even though Kasper was having a great game, it came as no surprise when his goal was breached, the corner resulting from a slack pass intercepted in a dangerous area once again.
2-2 then and everything to play for only it’s our opponents looking rejuvenated and fancying a famous comeback victory. After an attack fizzled out Celtic went and did something they hadn’t done,,strung together a good passage of play and scored a team goal.
The right hand side combined and set free Engles close to the by-line, who produced a gem of a cut back to Kuhn who dispatched it with amplomb. Celtic were back baby, all we needed to do was hold out for 3 minutes or so.
We held out for 21 seconds.
R2ngers copied us in converting a team made chance, only theirs was route one football. Centre spot, quickly worked out wide, immediate deep cross,,,easy peasy.
It was farcical.
It was 3 apiece.
From then on a raft of subs didn’t really affect the game, Celtic looked as though they wanted the win and attacked the most throughout the closing stages and extra time, but R2ngers looked determined to take their chances on penalties, and so it passed.
At that stage I had mentally thrown my hands up in the air thinking it’s a crap shoot, whatever happens happens, but 3 things happened. Firstly Kasper had seemingly rolled his ankle collecting the ball earlier and needed a bit of treatment, then the blue half of Glasgow won both tosses to not only shoot in front of their own fans but win the option to go first. My belief honestly wavered as proceedings began.
I knew Adam and Arne could take good penalties so I’d no worries over them,,Reo however,,,he hits the ball hard yes but he had had another stinker, and failing would truly see him become the whipping boy.
Likewise Callum.
But all four scored, and Kasper had proved me wrong by saving one despite the ankle.
It all fell upon the shoulders of James Forrest.
Our longest serving player, decorated like a general, with fresh legs to boot, he strikes the ball well,,I awaited the baby faced assassin to make the long and lonely plod upfield to become an instant hero or villain.
His time had come, it was the obvious pick for big match winning penalty.
The camera pans and,,,oh shit.
A mop of dyed blond hair has the ball under his arm, a smile on his face, and the weight of the world on his shoulders. Flashes of Beckham staring down at the spot went through my head, imaginary scenes of a little boy in RowZ losing the final sip of his father instructed Bovril after being struck by the ball, visions of a bewildered look upon a Japanese face as he rubs both hands in an unnaturally coloured barnet.
What happened next shall never leave me, for as much as we ascribe him to be an instinctive player who screws up if given too much time to think about what happens next,,,he did it again.
Diego would have been proud of that penalty. Daizen ran up completely selling one corner until the very last minute, and when Butland committed himself to that save, Maeda simply adjusted last second and actually rolled the ball into the wide open free space in an exhibition of not only coolness but the footballing brain we thought he lacked.
Sorry Daizen, for what it’s worth I would have you in my starting 11, and you just proved once again why you’re called The Duracell Bunny.
The penalties, the goals, lifting the Cup clearly meant a lot to all involved, I’m delighted to have the trophy cabinet expanded because it actually is organically won as opined during the week,,,
BUT,,,
Ooft we cannot play games like that. That’s heart in the mouth stuff,,good teams don’t allow footballing ping-pong but shut it down. Now I admit our opposition were physical/rough as the yellow card count shows, but their general shape and tactics were not bettered over 120 minutes. That’s the type of game and intensity we should expect to come up against consistently in Europe, we must learn from that experience because a European team would have walked away with 3 points if we turned out that performance and offered up that many chances.
Kuhn was doubled up on, Maeda closely tagged, Callum man-marked, midfield and defense pressed fast and hard into mistake after mistake,,,it looks like ol Phillipe simply adopted our European opponents tactics and very nearly pulled it off successfully.
Both teams set pieces were woeful bar a few occasions, one of which lead to a goal. We gave the ball away constantly, especially under pressure, good sides can automatically pass into a zone they know the teammate will be occupying, if the wings aren’t working and the midfield is nullified/having an off day then our striker is out of the game and I barely recall Kyogos name getting mentioned,,,that’s not good.
On one level I feel our squad was exposed today, it’s deficiencies highlighted for all to see. I agree with those posters and every supporter who wondered about Reo staying on the park, I secretly hope Brendan is accessing him overall, because Bernardo is more consistent and Brendan previously brought up consistency as a big factor.
On one level consistency was achieved, we won after all, as we do most weeks bar one single blip,,but the form we all know this team is capable of once again evaded us for these 120 minutes plus.
Now we’ve lifted the trophy, now the trebles on-track, now the bonding season is complete,,will we kick on? Is this the springboard for bigger and better things?
I hope so.
Well done Bhoys, great ending to the first half of the season, you’ve made us proud.
Now please make the second half of the season an unforgettable one.

Best of luck with your appointment, mate. I know exactly how you feel. In the past, patients in the US had to wait on tenterhooks at the oncologist/ nephrologist or other specialist office for the results of blood tests/MRIs/Catscans etc, and I know that many of these doctors did not relish giving out some of the results.
Now they post them on your personal portal prior to the appointment. It removes that obligation from the doctor, and gives the patient time to absorb the results and carry out his/her own research on their significance. Overall, I think it is a positive step, as you enter the appointment up to date, and much better informed. I assume it is the same in Canada.
Anyhoo, enuff o’that. Again, best wishes. I hope the news is good and that you have a relaxed and happy festive season with the family.

For Jobo
Unfortunately a real struggle to find 3 players to get pass marks.
Maeda was my MOTM with two vital goals.
Schmeichel gets a vote for two vital saves – including the penalty save.
Kuhn gets my third vote.
I’ve never come so close to only selecting two players!
4 v 1 and they still couldn’t score

So Kris Boyd wants Patrick Stewart to demand a sit down with Willie Colum. Clyde callers demanding the Ref and Var team are not allowed to referee or.be involved in Var again…Well here is an ideal opportunity for our board to lend support to our city rivals and, in the name of transparency and neutrality, call for officials from outwith this country Scotland to officiate Celtic v The Rangers games….Call their Bluff…

Hi,a few days ago you posted the iconic Celtic ‘shamrock’ as badge to from the late 50s,you mentiond a night where you are at stall in the barras,
Could you please repost details where i can get an xxl top,i am in Glasgow next 3 nights if your bout.many thanks
Yesterday was only the 2nd time we’ve won a penalty shootout in a final against any form of Rangers.
Having taken time to think about the game without the emotion of being there, I think we were poor from the first whistle yesterday. Finding 3 for jobo will be tough. First off I don’t think Johnston was 100% fit and I hate when we play players that aren’t fit. He never got outside Kuhn once and his attempted passes to him were mostly too short. The back two of CCV and Trusty need to have a word with themselves. If you are being replaced by Liam Scales because he’s better at bringing the ball out, You should be concerned. Every team we play now is content to leave CCV with the ball and he should be good enough to take advantage of that. Taylor is just Taylor. He tries, he’s tenacious in the tackle but he can’t give the ball away as many times as he did yesterday. He got punished and to be honest it was coming.
In midfield it is clearly not working. I thought the Huns man marked our three. Now if you are confident and happy to take the ball under pressure you should relish man marking. Move it on quick, move into space and off you go. Calmac did this for fun 2 seasons ago. Now, he seems to have stopped moving to look for the ball. That means Hatate and Bernardo have to come and get it but when they do they pass it straight back to where it came from, usually CCV!! I think we need to change it up. This combination is not working. I’d bring in McCowan and give him and the other two BR picks the next three games together. By the time they get to ibrox they should have an understanding.
Up front I’m really puzzled about Kyogo, I keep saying it. Is he making the wrong runs or is every midfielder at the club incapable of finding him? Is he going too early so by the time they see him he’s offside. Either way it needs to be addressed. If we had signed this guy in 23/24 and were going on the last 18 months we’d be going tonto.
Anyway that’s my tuppence worth. Beating the Huns is always sweet, it just shouldn’t be such a sweat!!

Can you clarify.
If a foul committed outside the box causes a player to fall or stumble inside the box does that justify a penalty decision?
In days of yore Davie Wilson could be fouled in the centre circle and land inside the box to claim a penalty.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #25 CELTIC 3 SEVCO 3 (TAYLOR, MAEDA, KUHN)*
*CELTIC WIN 5-4 ON PENALTIES (IDAH, McGREGOR, ENGELS, HATATE, MAEDA)
Good evening, friends.
Our consistency of performance cannot be denied – half a dozen games where we fail to play as well as we can and yet still nobody can beat us!
The first half yesterday was between 2 teams who were both poor in possession and bereft of any real quality plays. As the game trundled towards half time, a particularly sloppy cross field pass from Taylor saw 3 Sevco attackers bearing down on goal. Kasper did well to save the first shot but his parry led to an easy tap in for the opening goal. Half time, a goal down and vast improvements required.
The second half started in a similar vein and on 51 minutes it really should have been game over as a Sevco breakaway saw 4 blue shirts and just Carter-Vickers as our sole defender. The block by Carter felt as if it could be a game changer and so it proved. Just 4 minutes later a corner from Celtic was cleared to the edge of the box where Taylor (aye, him!) fired it towards goal. A fortunate deflection saw the ball nestle in our opponents net and it was game on.
Celtic started to get a bit of belief and on 59 minutes the good guys took the lead. Daizen put pressure on the Sevco defender and whilst rotating 360 degrees he brought the ball out of the air, controlled it with his right, shifted to the side and finished with his left. A brilliant goal!
Celtic were more in control now and made several forays down our right hand side but without really troubling Butland. On 73 minutes a fine strike at the other end saw Schmeichel pull off a world class save to turn the ball round the post. But from the resultant corner the blue meanies got their equaliser.
With only 5 minutes left of the 90 Celtic produced the best move of the game featuring Kuhn, Ralston and Engels down the right hand side. Arne’s perfect cut back saw Nicolas with a fine finish. Could Celtic hold out this time? That answer came far too quickly as 20-odd seconds after the restart R2ngers had made it 3-3 and so extra time was required.
There were no real clear chances made during the extra half hour although Celtic did finish fitter and stronger but couldn’t take advantage of their tiring opponents. And so, it was a penalty shoot out to determine the outcome.
Sevco took their first and Taveneir, Hagi and Danilo all scored with Idah, McGregor and Engels doing the same for Celtic. Yilmaz was 4th penalty taker for them and Big Kaspar pulled off a fine save, down to his left to give Celtic the advantage. Hatate made no mistake and Celtic lead 4-3 with one penalty remaining. Sevco’s 5th penalty taker was their goalkeeper, Butland and arguably his was the best hit penalty of the lot. In my own head I had already thought about who our 5 takers would be. I got the first 4 correct but expected James Forest to take the last and so I was slightly nervous (understatement!) when Daizen walked forward. Not the cleanest of contacts with the ball but Butland went the wrong way and the Celtic end (and my own living room) went wild with delight.
These really are special times.
We have now played 25 games this season, winning 19, drawing 5 and losing just the 1. We have scored 71 and conceded 20 (domestically it’s 61-10 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Thanks as always to the 74 who voted this time around. The total votes cast are 1 short of what you’d expect as someone asked to share their 3rd choice between 2 players. I don’t do half votes!
The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Schmeichel*: 60
Johnston: 0
Carter-Vickers*: 34
Trusty: 0
Taylor: 1
McGregor: 2
Bernardo: 21
Hatate: 3
Kuhn*: 32
Kyogo: 0
Maeda: 63
Scales: 4
Engels: 0
Ralston: 1
Idah: 0
Valle: 0
Forrest:
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Triggers Broom FC are –
Maeda – 5 points (was also MOTM in the semi final demolition of Aberdeen)
Schmeichel – 4 points
Carter-Vickers – 3 points
Kuhn – 2 points
Bernardo – 1 point
And the overall positions after 25 games played are –
43 points – Kuhn
35 points – Bernardo, Hatate
34 points – Maeda
31 points – Scales, Schmeichel
30 points – McGregor
22 points – Trusty
21 points – Johnston A
18 points – Engels
17 points – Carter-Vickers
14 points – McCowan and Valle
11 points – Kyogo
7 points – O’Riley and Taylor
5 points – Idah
4 points – Forrest
1 point – Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley, Welsh
Our next game sees us return to league action with a visit to Tannadice to face Dundee United. The game is on Sunday 22nd December with a High Noon kick off.
Hail Hail!
Didnt realize that Calmac’s mum and granny post on here
(that’s the only possible explanation for him getting 2 votes )!
and which one of you is on Greg Taylor’s payroll?

If the foul starts outside the area but continues into it then it is a penalty, provided the ref hasn’t stopped play before it gets into the area.
In yesterday’s case, the original foul was outside, as was the pull by Scales. On feeling this pull, Černý moved his leg onto the line, a movement not caused by the pull. However, looking at where Beaton placed the free kick, it was a yard outside the area, indicating that he may have given the first foul or that he wasn’t deceived by Černý’s attempt to win a penalty.
VAR then looked at it, and agreed with Beaton that there was no penalty, and this was later confirmed by Willie Collum in a (now deleted) post on BlueSky.
Cheers,JOBO. The top four were my top four too,and it was harsh leaving one out.

Bit surprised about the ongoing criticism of young Engels. The speed and skill of him and Kuhn for the 3rd goal was superb.

Part of the criticism of Celtic comes from unwillingness to accept R2ngers have improved over the last few weeks.
How many games have the lost since the draw with Dundee Utd domestically and Europe?
They are not losing or drawing the games that have created the 11 point gap.
Perhaps if we were to acknowledge that the opposition do play a part in the performance of our players the criticism might wane just a tad.
‐———————————————————–
Apologies for the late response…work.
I did say last Thursday I was less confident after watching their performance against Spurs, but still expected a positive outcome. I did not, however, feel that we would struggle the way we did. But as you say, credit to the opposition.
Rebus67
Echoing all those on here, good luck with your appointment.
This guy, Turkish international Enes Unal, battered in this free kick years ago. He does it regularly.
He just did it again a few minutes ago, from 30 yards, from roughly the same spot, for Bournemouth to equalize against West Ham. I’ll post it once it becomes available.
Why can’t Brendan ‘develop’ one single player to do this? As it is, when we get a free kick in range of goal, we are an empty threat.

ATOB @ 7:18
“Up front I’m really puzzled about Kyogo, I keep saying it. Is he making the wrong runs or is every midfielder at the club incapable of finding him?”
————————
Hi ATOB:
First class analysis at 7:18. Right on the money with every word! As to your question above, he is NOT making incorrect runs, and our midfield players are either incapable of seeing him, far less finding him, or more likely under instruction to keep playing safe passes with 90% chance of success.
Kyogo played for Vissel Kobe in the JL. When he was joined by Iniesta in 2018, his goal totals soared, because Iniesta could find him, and the two together won the Emperor’s Cup and the Japanese Super Cup in 2019 and 2021 respectively. It drives me nuts that we did not vary our tactics when we were penned in by 2 blocks of 5 clogging the middle. A few long balls into the corners for the running Kuhn, Maeda and Kyogo would have forced Sevco to alter their approach, have them running towards their own goal, and tired them out faster. Look how often Liverpool vary their short passing playing out from the back by long balls to Salah, Diaz or Nunez, particularly on a change of possession while deep in their own half. All the top European sides do this and a large percentage of goals are scored this way. Red Star Belgrade scored 5 this way recently in the CL while under the cosh from Stuttgart, and Salah has been doing it for years.

Yesterday we just weren’t at it, we had a few under performers and too many loose passes, but what sticks in my mind is this.
We have seen that this Celtic team can play much better than yesterday, I highly doubt that they can.
Sol Kitts.
Thanks for your view.
I thought the tackle by Scales was a clear foul and if Beaton thought the same his award of the free kick outside the box was correct.
SSB in spite of the WC confirmation sent to them tried to argue that where foul happened and position of Cernys foot was irrelevant and based on a single screen shot without reference to whole event a penalty should be awarded.
I look forward to WC answering the R2ngers request for clarification.
