Over the line

The teamsheet gave us a Calmac, Reo, Bernardo central midfield combination which wasn’t to my liking, but I was giddy as the ref blew the whistle. You can’t buy that feeling.

It slowly evaporated though as ‘the spectacle’ played out. One commentator referred to it as basketball like, but in truth it was a feast of bad passing from both sides leading to a poor game of ping-pong. When after 25 minutes it was clear this wouldn’t be a proper footballing affair, it was truly a case of just waiting for the ‘gotcha’ moment when one of the numerous slack passes lead to a deadly transition.

That fell to our opponents, the attacking support finally putting it in the net, and half-time suddenly became much more important at one goal down.

Liam emerged instead of Trusty which looked strange, but within a minute had shown his danger by flashing a corner header just wide. That was a sign of things to come as suddenly Celtic passed a bit better, moved with more intent, found a bit of rhythm and went probing,,they weren’t going down meekly thanks to the halftime rocket. On the back of being invigorated, we ‘hustled’ two goals.

In a twist of fate, Greg managed a deflected goal to atone for giving away the previous goal, and then Daizen managed to see, carve out, and finish the chance only he sniffed. It was sublime, it would be on any player’s highlight reel, harrying then some deft touches, first time wrong foot finish,,Diego would have been happy with it.

The fans went into raptures, but credit to our opponents they didn’t get rattled but rather stepped up again and a goal behind or not began carving out chances, one in particular saw Big Cam as a one man defense against 4 blue shirts and he managed to put it out for a corner saving the day.

Hence even though Kasper was having a great game, it came as no surprise when his goal was breached, the corner resulting from a slack pass intercepted in a dangerous area once again.

2-2 then and everything to play for only it’s our opponents looking rejuvenated and fancying a famous comeback victory. After an attack fizzled out Celtic went and did something they hadn’t done,,strung together a good passage of play and scored a team goal.

The right hand side combined and set free Engles close to the by-line, who produced a gem of a cut back to Kuhn who dispatched it with amplomb. Celtic were back baby, all we needed to do was hold out for 3 minutes or so.
We held out for 21 seconds.

R2ngers copied us in converting a team made chance, only theirs was route one football. Centre spot, quickly worked out wide, immediate deep cross,,,easy peasy.
It was farcical.
It was 3 apiece.

From then on a raft of subs didn’t really affect the game, Celtic looked as though they wanted the win and attacked the most throughout the closing stages and extra time, but R2ngers looked determined to take their chances on penalties, and so it passed.

At that stage I had mentally thrown my hands up in the air thinking it’s a crap shoot, whatever happens happens, but 3 things happened. Firstly Kasper had seemingly rolled his ankle collecting the ball earlier and needed a bit of treatment, then the blue half of Glasgow won both tosses to not only shoot in front of their own fans but win the option to go first. My belief honestly wavered as proceedings began.

I knew Adam and Arne could take good penalties so I’d no worries over them,,Reo however,,,he hits the ball hard yes but he had had another stinker, and failing would truly see him become the whipping boy.
Likewise Callum.
But all four scored, and Kasper had proved me wrong by saving one despite the ankle.
It all fell upon the shoulders of James Forrest.

Our longest serving player, decorated like a general, with fresh legs to boot, he strikes the ball well,,I awaited the baby faced assassin to make the long and lonely plod upfield to become an instant hero or villain.
His time had come, it was the obvious pick for big match winning penalty.
The camera pans and,,,oh shit.

A mop of dyed blond hair has the ball under his arm, a smile on his face, and the weight of the world on his shoulders. Flashes of Beckham staring down at the spot went through my head, imaginary scenes of a little boy in RowZ losing the final sip of his father instructed Bovril after being struck by the ball, visions of a bewildered look upon a Japanese face as he rubs both hands in an unnaturally coloured barnet.
What happened next shall never leave me, for as much as we ascribe him to be an instinctive player who screws up if given too much time to think about what happens next,,,he did it again.

Diego would have been proud of that penalty. Daizen ran up completely selling one corner until the very last minute, and when Butland committed himself to that save, Maeda simply adjusted last second and actually rolled the ball into the wide open free space in an exhibition of not only coolness but the footballing brain we thought he lacked.
Sorry Daizen, for what it’s worth I would have you in my starting 11, and you just proved once again why you’re called The Duracell Bunny.

The penalties, the goals, lifting the Cup clearly meant a lot to all involved, I’m delighted to have the trophy cabinet expanded because it actually is organically won as opined during the week,,,
BUT,,,
Ooft we cannot play games like that. That’s heart in the mouth stuff,,good teams don’t allow footballing ping-pong but shut it down. Now I admit our opposition were physical/rough as the yellow card count shows, but their general shape and tactics were not bettered over 120 minutes. That’s the type of game and intensity we should expect to come up against consistently in Europe, we must learn from that experience because a European team would have walked away with 3 points if we turned out that performance and offered up that many chances.

Kuhn was doubled up on, Maeda closely tagged, Callum man-marked, midfield and defense pressed fast and hard into mistake after mistake,,,it looks like ol Phillipe simply adopted our European opponents tactics and very nearly pulled it off successfully.

Both teams set pieces were woeful bar a few occasions, one of which lead to a goal. We gave the ball away constantly, especially under pressure, good sides can automatically pass into a zone they know the teammate will be occupying, if the wings aren’t working and the midfield is nullified/having an off day then our striker is out of the game and I barely recall Kyogos name getting mentioned,,,that’s not good.

On one level I feel our squad was exposed today, it’s deficiencies highlighted for all to see. I agree with those posters and every supporter who wondered about Reo staying on the park, I secretly hope Brendan is accessing him overall, because Bernardo is more consistent and Brendan previously brought up consistency as a big factor.
On one level consistency was achieved, we won after all, as we do most weeks bar one single blip,,but the form we all know this team is capable of once again evaded us for these 120 minutes plus.

Now we’ve lifted the trophy, now the trebles on-track, now the bonding season is complete,,will we kick on? Is this the springboard for bigger and better things?
I hope so.

Well done Bhoys, great ending to the first half of the season, you’ve made us proud.
Now please make the second half of the season an unforgettable one.

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.
⭐️👏☘️👍🍾
That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.
Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.
Here is the link for the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust, our new charity which we will support.

This drive has already raised approaching another £2000,so join in. The more, the merrier.

Default payment method seems to be ApplePay,which won’t suit everyone. There is an option on the page to change that to your preferred option.

Coin toss x 2 — for the penalties.
Ludge MIB have been taking lessons on this.
All choreographed to the N’th degree.

MIB makes the calls / places the coin / decides what face decides what / allows it to fall.
All very polished / all very performative / no input from the players.
MIB pointed to the coin explained what each side would represent.
Then did his stuff in a very professional manner.

Govan FC got shoot into their end.
Govan FC got to decide if they wanted to take the first penalty.

Job done — Ludge MIB are wringing the cloth dry for their pet club.
Worth a watching — stamps on the Achilles / ankle was today’s physical dimension.
Do you think they practice it in training?

DM penalty — side netting / 6 inches from the post.
Well struck / the ball trajectory was a blur — I am getting old.
Knew we had won when the net rippled.

KS save — poor penalty / KS nearly dived over it going for the corner.

Just back from the pub. Delighted with the result, of course, but I thought we were shocking, and my nerves are shredded.

How many times do we trundle the ball slowly across our own 18 yard line before disaster strikes? And why are we so slow to get going? The inertia and lack of energy and drive from several players was concerning. At one point we let them run in on goal with 4 players to our one, and we were exceptionally lucky to get away with it. Kaspar also had one world class save where the ball was headed to his top right corner. We keep losing the ball from our own throw ins, and we have zero creativity with our set pieces.

Newcastle yesterday showed several different short corner moves to send a player in
on goal. Fernandes won Man U’s Europa League tie in Czechia on Thursday with a clearly rehearsed free kick move. What does Bernardo do in a good position? He hits it weakly into the wall. Top teams score a high percentage of their goals from rehearsed set pieces. We just hit and hope.

Crossing by Scales and Ralston was unbelievably poor. With their two aged carthorses at center back, we couldn’t find a way to free Kyogo to either run directly at them or get in behind them. They looked fitter and sharper than we did, snapping into tackles from the off, and generating more shots than we did. You could drive a horse and cart through our midfield, and sooner or later, we will pay the price for that.

As I said, delighted with the result, but I think we gave them life and encouragement, and I just have a nagging feeling of disquiet about that. We better have our ducks in a row on Jan 2.

When Tav (pen) won both coin tosses to decide ends and take the first one, I thought we were screwed. Fortunately, the players’ nerve held, although Idah has to learn to take a much more convincing penalty.

Interesting historical note – that was the first time that Callum, for either Celtic or Scotland, struck a penalty to the keeper’s right. I think Butland assumed he would do it again.

We need reinforcements in January. This bankrupt outfit made us really struggle today.
Them’s my 2 cents.

Next 8/9 months — we need to sign a new defence.
Some starters / some spares but more in needed.
Plus a lot of detailed defensive drills / individual coaching.

Hard shifts playing without the ball.
Judo to improve their balance under pressure.

Defence struggles to give a pass / take a pass.
All flicks / hooks / chips with the foot at very awkward angles.
Taking the ball in the middle with both feet at legs akimbo / LofG stylee straight from the TV.
All this nonsense about giving them the eyes and putting out a no look pass.

Seems to be the fashion for the squad — bad habits straight from training.
Funny how bad habits spread — at the eggchasing all the backs turned their collars up.
Because some fan dancer had done it on Rugby Special.
Not good.

BR needs to get in amongst them and teach the basics.

Gordon I know what you mean but if Calum is too risky to be subbed and the Huns are coached to kick fuck out him like today then maybe we should be looking for a sub for Calum in such games? No? It’s tactical. Other teams with our finance power seem capable of it why not Celtic? On a different area I love the fact that James Forest is still a tactical choice

I had to think very hard to recall the ‘penalty’ incident that Sportscene were referring too. The fact they went into so much detail to convince one another and Hun viewers that it was a ‘penalty’ was really a fantastic show of mental gymnastics.

The rules are simple, if it’s outside the box it’s not a penalty. The big white lines are the clue.

They just make it up as they go along these days.

Anyway, job done. But deary me, we need to up our game.

We live to gloat another day.
The only thing worse than yesterday’s performance would have been a defeat.

Managed to score 3 goals and could have had more — memo to NK it is a team game.
Your NT manager will approve if you lift your head / make the pass / use 5th gear more often.
Harsh / possibly unfair but he needs to spread the wealth of his talent.

However the semi-circle of doom is now hurting us.

Memo to BR — the opposition can’t be everywhere — if they are on us at our 18 yard line we need to be brave and pass through the press. More chance of failure but not doing so / mixing it up invites more pressure and potential catastrophe with a mis-placed pass in our penalty box.

Memo to RH — your NT manager will notice if you add a half yard of pace to your game.
Very one speeded at the moment — after 60 minutes the game is yours but it was a poor watch up until then.

Memo to AT — apologies if you were carrying an injury but you played a very limited game compared to your CL exploits. They were not that good.

Memo to the squad — Ludge MIB will always be on your case but leaving KF to be the silent assassin is a step too far. If it is a one way street then the ECh level cluggers of Govan FC will always try it on and then try some more.

Jr pointed out that their No.10 threw himself at KS’s knee at a corner — at the time I thought it was an attempt to gain a penalty but KS’s reaction suggested that he saw the move as an attempt to injure him — red card at the egg chasing but unpunished by Ludge MIB.

We need to get more active / more cute / more assertive. If we don’t they will just get more brazen. Somebody from the club / in our sphere of influence should highlight the lack of replays when they left something on our players. The Govan FC booster club is a well oiled machine at the moment and we need to pushback.

They have 2 weeks to work on this for the next game.
They will wring the cloth dry and then try some more.
They are a bad combination of cute and desperate.

50 year old advice that works — get your retaliation in first.

Ludge MIB / Ludge VAR pushback — the interweb clips of the various incidents is a good way to fight their failures.

LS tackle outside the box — attendant furore / farrago / fan dancerism — the clips of the various wrestling smackdowns that Govan FC got away with in recent games is weapons grade debunking.

We need more of this.

If you can convince people that a club that was liquidated still exists then indulging in a little wishful thinking about a non existent penalty is but a bagatelle.

According to big Boabby Madden the Scales incident was a stonewall penalty. There’s a still trending on FF of the jersey pull and Cerny’s boot is on the line ergo its a penalty.
I always knew he was a Boabby!

Poor Frank Connor has been hung out to dry on FF which I think is extremely harsh – particularly as it was Alan Muir that was on VAR!
I do hope death threats haven’t been issued to the wrong man!

As to the game – I agree with the vast majority of the above comments that, for the 4th consecutive game we were nowhere near our best. Yet another flat and stodgy performance from virtually every player. On such a historical occasion I find that very strange.

At FT I felt as flat as the Quadruple Treble final v Hearts -oddly also 3-3 then a win on penalties.

Still, 119 eh?

Look on the brightside — at least they will now shut up about some supposed stolen throw-in from 35 years ago.

Plus it has taken them 35 years to train a linesman to have the brass neck to steal a throw-in in a similar manner in a national cup final.

MIB was particularly sleekit it yesterday ably assisted by the lack of good quality TV replays when they left something on our players.

But the stand side linesman was just at it and proud that he was at if from the off.
Worth a watching.

When DM scored his penalty I thought he was going to flag KS for being offside.

Scales added a more positive vibe on appearance yesterday
But the non penalty perfectly highlighted something he has to fix if he is to become a top quality centre back!
In an unforgiving position he has almost a mistake a game in him.
Most are not in the physical part but in the mental realm.
He should be working with someone employed by the club to improve his focus!
Also felt a better/quicker reaction to what’s unfolding on the field of play would be helpful.
I realise he took off Trusty for Scales to move us upfield more but surely in first half a forward
and midfield adjustment would have been advisable?
Should be a barrage of mssm complaining about Huns cheated on penalty but cups gone for them and this is an attempt to aid in next hun refs cheating in New Year game.

The media’s role is to keep the Huns coming back for more, no matter how many absolute skelpings we give them, no matter how many trophies and trebles we win, they need to feed the Huns the idea that tomorrow things will turn in their favour.
