Cool, Cam, And Collected

Morning,all.

I won’t trouble you with an in-depth review of the match, as MAHE covered it in yesterday’s article and we have widely dissected the game since on the site. Especially in JOBO’s review accompanying the POTY ratings. But to have so much possession in the first half and still be hanging on grimly for a half time bollocking and pep talk tells you much of where it went wrong for us.

To go ahead with only three minutes remaining yet still concede the equaliser TWENTYONE SECONDS later tells you a lot of the rest of it.

For all the fact that few of us can think of a single player of theirs who would be an addition to our squad, they still managed to cut through us at will. For all the fact that we would much rather have our manager than theirs, he still spotted that we would be weak on our left by playing Taylor as an auxiliary midfielder, and that the long ball every time could cause us problems.

Shades of the 2002 Scottish Cup Final, in that respect.

How many second balls did we win, how many did they win? They countered fast and in numbers, we fannied about at the back and let them reset. In fact, and I allude to this in the headline, we could have been dead and buried from those very failures just after the restart. And at 2-0 down, how many of us would have bet on a recovery from there? For me, it was a pivotal point in the match.

Buggering about near the edge of their area, we switched the ball back to Taylor, who failed to control it and ended up on the floor. They broke in numbers with Bahrami shaping for the cutback for their second. At that time they had a four on one break, and that goal looked inevitable. Cam had no room for error, knew he couldn’t concede a penalty and knew he couldn’t allow the cutback either. And knew too that he was on his own!

He coolly made the interception, and a huge sigh of relief went up from every one of our fans, no matter where they were watching. We knew the significance of that moment, and so too did the players. Within a matter of minutes, we went from a goal down to being a goal up, and suddenly the game looked there for the taking.

But enough already about Sunday itself. It was if anything indicative of too many performances recently, where as we have often mentioned, the result came about because we got it right in one half rather than in both. It’s a trend which is becoming a habit, and certainly not a pleasant one. It is one that we have to break.

Certainly it is just peachy to have players out there who can overcome otherwise poor performances with a few flashes of excellence, but that is rarely enough in an individual sport never mind a team sport like football. Certainly it is just peachy to have a man in goal who might already be my favourite of all time. And certainly it is just peachy to have a top manager at the helm.

But when that manager is leaving us open in the same manner, game after game, when he is having to write his half time bollocking in advance, when he still can’t see past having CalMac and Hatate along with one other as his starting mids, despite their clear poor current form?

Every manager needs a system, we know that. But 100% rigidity to any system when it clearly needs tweaking at times is not a clear pathway to success. Ask Big Jock about Dukla Prague in 1967 as an example, where he knew what was required to get us through to Lisbon. It was against everything he believed football to be about, but he explained to the players what was required and they went out and did the necessary.

Pragmatism is not a sign of weakness. Nor is it an admission that your system is a failure and is unworkable in practice. It is a sign that as a manager you recognise that it will not be enough against a particular opposition on the day, that your squad is big enough to cope with a new face on occasion, and with players that are more than up to the job.

We face Sunday’s opposition in their own midden in sixteen days. We have three winnable games before then. It would be an excellent use of our only free midweek before February if BR had the players trying a couple of new ideas in training. It would be an excellent use of the midweek if we could actually perform in all six halves of those matches, and obviously again at Ibrox.

It would be an excellent use of Sunday, in fact, if we showed that we actually learned anything from it.

We paid £2.5mill for AI’s winning goal in the SCF.
In the round probably worth it for cultural reasons.
But not great value.

Looking for to seeing Johnny Kenny if he returns.

CHelsea’s Mudryk suspended for drug use. possible 4 year ban if confirmed.

When I saw him play for Shaktar, I thought he had a huge future, but just hasn’t taken off the way I thought he would. Mind you, until this season, Chelsea hasn’t been the place to go to develop.

My mole at Ayr Utd told me yesterday Johnjo Kenny would be recalled in Jan but will immediately be sent on loan to them. Their main striker is out until end of season and alledgedly Broonie has been in discussions ref the move to further help Ayr’s push for promotion this season. This from a man with almost 70 yrs following Utd so no bs.

After the game, Scales suggested that he didn’t want to take a penalty kick, if it wasnt settled in the intial five. He said,

“We are all sort of hoping that it doesn’t go past the five because then you are thinking ‘who’s next?’,” said Scales on BBC Radio Scotland.
“We are all in the line. No one wanted it. It’s great to get it done in the five. Brilliant Kasper and Daizen. All the takers, it’s just big bravery and brilliant penalties.”

Honest? Foolish? Both?

Are you saying the players were kidding on in the togetherness they showed past match?

That display post match suggests the reasons for not reaching your heights is more to do with football factors and the way the opposition set out their stall as a reason.

It’s not as if Celtic are Braveheart and can fart fireballs out of their arse. They are one set of human beings playing against another set which introduces a myriad of possibilities for performance least of which, if at all, is disharmony which is never far from what you consistently bring to discussions.

There is a reason you have been put on a last warning and have been banned from other sites and disharmony would be high on my list.

If you were to lose SC as a channel to present your views who would be to blame?

No player would want to have to take a penalty in those circumstances. I doubt any of the five designated players would have wanted to do it either, and to some extent the pressure on them would be less.

Not sure I agree. Different level I appreciate, but when I played, I never liked taking penalties. As a striker I was usually picked to do so. But, frankly, I didn’t enjoy it, as I was never the cleanest striker of the ball … and most of my goals were a function of being 6’3′ and all arms and legs … more ofthen than not, balls hit me and sort of went in. But there were a few guys I played with at college who had the skill and personality (one played for the US U-18’s, another who played for Trinidad junior team) who just loved being the star, and penalties were a chance to be ‘the man’. There were a few who fought to take penalties.

I have to think that, the higher you go in the game, the more players there are who have grown up belieiving they are ‘the man’, and would relish the chance to take them.

Thanks for that bit of Irish history which is but a grain of sand in the desert compared to what I have still to learn.

Born in Glasgow’s Gallowgate to a father born in Well St to a father also born in the Gallowgate my connection to Ireland and its history is at a 3rd remove. My grandmother was born in Glagow,Sword St perhaps, and although her father was born in Ireland she died 3 months before I was born.

So I identify as Scottish and paid little attention to any detail of Irish history and played football in the morning with my Catholic school team and the Proddy BB in the afternoon where I had friends through street football. My dad boasted about my nuetrality and I am forever in his debt knowing he strongly hated Rangers as an institution.

However back in 2010 (from memory) I attended an Open Meeting at St Mary’s Calton with some CQN stalwarts like Canalamar (who introduced himself to me by asking if I was a hun) where the main topic was The Poppy on the jersey although Jeanette Findlay had agreed that refereeing and tackling SFA should be on the agenda. A totally different story.

On the PoJ debate a representative of the Irish Celtic football supporters association AICS spoke to the issue and his eloquent impassioned testimony opened my eyes as to why those with a stronger Irish connection than I felt so strongly about their history and the general being treated as lesser human beings culture of their experience.

I thought Christ I’d feel like they do if my experience was the same.

So I did a bit more reading, made some fine Irish friends in the process and was glad to see the stance the Irish Govt has taken on Gaza , as in being true to their own experience.

Being true to ourselves is all we can be but in sharing our experience with others without judgement we gain a better understanding of self.

Maybe in the course of a game, but that’s different to a penalty shout out, when it’s do or die, and the burden of expectation is that the penalty taker will score.

I’m still of the view that penalty shoot outs should be taken before the game.

Great lead article, Bobby! I love the way you often sum up my thoughts before I’m even awake, and then I can read them over my coffee!

I read an interesting article today from ex-Liverpool player Steven Warnock regarding the sacking of Southampton’s Russell Martin. His theory was that Martin suffered from adhering rigidly to his principles, but that the real reason was that some of his players were incapable of implementing them. He explained that with Southampton constantly playing out from the back without going long, ( under Martin’s instructions ) the defenders had the vast majority of possession, but were the least talented ball handlers. So, while taking care of the ball and attempting to play through a high press against the multi talented speedy attackers and midfielders of the EPL, they inevitably goofed up.

On reading that, I of course immediately thought of the unfortunate Taylor, and the risky slow sideways passing between any two of our center backs. We all know we are going to be under siege on Jan 2, so it is in our own interest to play as much of the game as possible in Sevco’s half, where MIB decisions can do us the least damage. One way of doing this is by varying out tactics and punting the ball into the corners for Maeda and Kuhn to chase, trying to find Kyogo’s runs, or finding Idah to hold it up.

Great coaches like Mourinho vary the way their team are set up, adjusting to 3-5-2, 5-3-2 or even 5-4-1, according to need. He has been quoted as saying he worries more about losing a goal when his defenders have the ball, rather than the opposition, which is an interesting viewpoint. Brendan never varies from 4-3-3, and our midfield was outnumbered for most of Sunday. It was almost as if Sevco were giving our defence the ball, trusting that we would eventually screw up. We’ve been sussed, and now we need to adjust.

I am also concerned that we are not managing to see out these games when we have a late lead. That’s now 2 ‘moral victories’ for Sevco where we have allowed them to equalize in the last minute or two ( Matondo and Danilo ).

Lastly, we should not count our chickens again about Jan 2. International players like Hagi (Romania), Bajrami (Albania, with World Cup’s fastest ever goal ) and Cerny ( Czechia ) are no mugs, and I expect us to be under the cosh for much of this game. I would be happy with a point, and another moral victory to thems.

Engels has the ability.
Just now he is suffering from youthful self doubt.
One strong performance to erase such should see him soar!

===
Strong being the key word. He is too gangly at this stage but a beefier Engles would have prevented the shot that equalised at 2 2 and his poor touch when put through needs to improve to become stronger.

Too soon to rule him a failure though.

I do remember reading on the old blog about taking the penalty shoot out before the game (maybe from you), and thinking WTF?! …. but, if teams know going into extra time they have to win it (because they have already lost if it goes to a shootout), they would try to win it…so, there is something to that …

but, of course, the opposite applies, if one teams knows that a ‘draw’ in extra time would be enough to win, they are probably more likely to not take any chances….so, I think penalties at the end is still the best way.

Asking questions about those performance levels is now seen as spreading poison.
====
It’s not asking the questions that is the poison it is making up reasons for it like disharmony in the squad that is the poison.

Had you not said that I would not have commented.

Do you think about the points you make and how you make them?

What is your objective to create the disharmony that you introduce as a reason for poor performance or to make Celtic Greater Than What They Are?

If the latter you have a funny way of going about it.

IQ 1024 yesterday.
I agree we could mix things up a bit. A few balls over the top into the space teams are leaving wouldn’t do any harm. When we played Hibs a couple of weeks ago the game was played a lot in a 40 yard space either side of the half way line. When Hibs won the ball they played it forward quickly on a good few occasions. We never did that. Like you say, it’s good to keep teams guessing and might reenergise Kyogo.
