Cool, Cam, And Collected

Morning,all.

I won’t trouble you with an in-depth review of the match, as MAHE covered it in yesterday’s article and we have widely dissected the game since on the site. Especially in JOBO’s review accompanying the POTY ratings. But to have so much possession in the first half and still be hanging on grimly for a half time bollocking and pep talk tells you much of where it went wrong for us.

To go ahead with only three minutes remaining yet still concede the equaliser TWENTYONE SECONDS later tells you a lot of the rest of it.

For all the fact that few of us can think of a single player of theirs who would be an addition to our squad, they still managed to cut through us at will. For all the fact that we would much rather have our manager than theirs, he still spotted that we would be weak on our left by playing Taylor as an auxiliary midfielder, and that the long ball every time could cause us problems.

Shades of the 2002 Scottish Cup Final, in that respect.

How many second balls did we win, how many did they win? They countered fast and in numbers, we fannied about at the back and let them reset. In fact, and I allude to this in the headline, we could have been dead and buried from those very failures just after the restart. And at 2-0 down, how many of us would have bet on a recovery from there? For me, it was a pivotal point in the match.

Buggering about near the edge of their area, we switched the ball back to Taylor, who failed to control it and ended up on the floor. They broke in numbers with Bahrami shaping for the cutback for their second. At that time they had a four on one break, and that goal looked inevitable. Cam had no room for error, knew he couldn’t concede a penalty and knew he couldn’t allow the cutback either. And knew too that he was on his own!

He coolly made the interception, and a huge sigh of relief went up from every one of our fans, no matter where they were watching. We knew the significance of that moment, and so too did the players. Within a matter of minutes, we went from a goal down to being a goal up, and suddenly the game looked there for the taking.

But enough already about Sunday itself. It was if anything indicative of too many performances recently, where as we have often mentioned, the result came about because we got it right in one half rather than in both. It’s a trend which is becoming a habit, and certainly not a pleasant one. It is one that we have to break.

Certainly it is just peachy to have players out there who can overcome otherwise poor performances with a few flashes of excellence, but that is rarely enough in an individual sport never mind a team sport like football. Certainly it is just peachy to have a man in goal who might already be my favourite of all time. And certainly it is just peachy to have a top manager at the helm.

But when that manager is leaving us open in the same manner, game after game, when he is having to write his half time bollocking in advance, when he still can’t see past having CalMac and Hatate along with one other as his starting mids, despite their clear poor current form?

Every manager needs a system, we know that. But 100% rigidity to any system when it clearly needs tweaking at times is not a clear pathway to success. Ask Big Jock about Dukla Prague in 1967 as an example, where he knew what was required to get us through to Lisbon. It was against everything he believed football to be about, but he explained to the players what was required and they went out and did the necessary.

Pragmatism is not a sign of weakness. Nor is it an admission that your system is a failure and is unworkable in practice. It is a sign that as a manager you recognise that it will not be enough against a particular opposition on the day, that your squad is big enough to cope with a new face on occasion, and with players that are more than up to the job.

We face Sunday’s opposition in their own midden in sixteen days. We have three winnable games before then. It would be an excellent use of our only free midweek before February if BR had the players trying a couple of new ideas in training. It would be an excellent use of the midweek if we could actually perform in all six halves of those matches, and obviously again at Ibrox.

It would be an excellent use of Sunday, in fact, if we showed that we actually learned anything from it.

Three poor goals to lose.
When we were on point we were a class above.
Govan FC removed two ringers at HT.
Their youth replacements were a big improvement.

They then had a good 15 minutes and took the lead.
We struggled to get back in the game.
On 60 minutes half the team is limping.

Some pressure / some good corners had them on the back foot.
We get a second and heads come up.
Miss a couple of chances.

They get a 1 vs 1 with the RB as last man.
AE levels of physicality and Zac L manages a shot through the GK’s legs.

We press forward but in panic mode.
Not to be — need to work on the second half when our sharpness went.

Thanks. If that is in fact legitimate, then why the fuck aren’t Celtic saying ‘the SFA have confirmed that the call was reviewed and was, in fact, correct’, instead of letting a lie be spread around… tell al lie often enough and it becomes the truth.

Celtic’s PR/media relations departments are as useless as tits on a bull (that is, if such departments do even exist).

The story says that the paper UNDERSTANDS that an admission was made during a conversation between Collum and Stewart.

When a paper writes that it ‘understands’, that is weasel word for we dont know if this is true or not, nut we are going to publish it anyways.

Secondly, the inference, and the only sensible one, is that the party doing the admitting was Collum. Two problems with that: the source is almost certainly not the party doing the alleged admitting. IFf Collum had told the paper that a mistake was made, they would say so directly, and wouldn’t use the weasel words. In this case, the one allegedly doing the admitting is already on another record denying that any mistake was made.

As Mark Twain once wrote ‘a lie can travel around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.’ And a lie told often enough, and uncontradicted, becomes accepted as the truth.

Yip and so the unsubstantiated claims continue, from the DR

“Blundering VAR duo Alan Muir and Frank Connor have been axed following their Premier Sports Cup final cock-up.

The pair have been panned for failing to spot a potential penalty for Rangers in their penalty shoot-out defeat to Celtic during extra time”

Re the myriad of possibilities for performance,Jonathan Wilso put it well in his article for today’s Guardian.
“sometimes the only explanation that makes sense is that football is governed not by the laws of physics, by data and xG and logic, but that it is in fact a malevolent deity, capricious and mischievous and that sometimes it turns on you and there’s really not much that can be done.”

Nae Penalty Tae Rangers.

The Scottish Football Association have accepted Rangers were denied a crucial penalty kick in Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final defeat against Celtic at Hampden.

The Scotsman understands that during a discussion between new Ibrox chief executive Patrick Stewart and Willie Collum, SFA Head of Referee Operations, it was admitted that a mistake was made when VAR officials failed to alert referee John Beaton that Celtic centre-half Liam Scales’ tug on Rangers winger Vaclav Cerny’s jersey occurred on the line, rather than just outside the box. Instead of giving a penalty. Beaton awarded a foul just outside the box from which James Tavernier shot over the bar.

In a subsequent interview with SFA Head of Referee Operations, Willie Collum, he explained that he thought he was being interviewed by Harry Hill for the TV programme You’ve Been Framed and was only trying to gain £250 .

Only if it was genuine and its disappearance does not rule out that it wasn’t.

For Collum his thinking will be what is best for the credibility of VAR that he has made more transparent is
(a) to admit human error or
(b)to state the foul that determined subsequent events took place outside the box and Beaton acted on seeing that.

A point put to me by an experienced referee is had Cerny stumbled and it was his hand that fell on the line would a penalty be justified?

Seen the incident with Scales & Cerny and nothing was said.

Only when Clement mentioned it was it then analysed. From what I saw this was after the event.

Even the initial pull was outside the box, with Cerny travelling across but slightly away from it. Feels the pull and he immediately falls forward. That doesn’t make it a penalty.

With the technology they have nowadays, they can prove it easily. I managed it with a pause and screenshot from Sportscene!

Penalty farrago — Govan FC are paying for all the mental awards they were given last season and almost every season.

The stats / the video clips / the amateur media comments — they all add up.
Ludge MIB / Ludge VAR don’t want to encourage any more scrutiny.
JB saw a foul and blew early — to him a bigger advantage to his team that letting the winger play on a blooter the ball over the bar.

Free kick in a good area / well versed taker in the Govan FC team vs tired winger moving across the goal needing to use his wrong foot?

VAR review — maybe the early grappling by the winger might have stood out more?
LS seemed slow to react to the winger’s movement. Then you see the grappling and understand it might not have been a LS mistake that gave the metre of space.

Indeed was it a clear and obvious mistake in the manner of the CG rugby tackle of yore against the sheep?

Funny how that particular incident was never given legs by Ludge Media.
