Celtic fail to peel the Tangerines

I recall the manager saying he had learnt his lesson earlier in the season when his raft of changes failed to inspire. Yesterday was similar, but the changes were most definitely forced upon him. I had underestimated the severity of the bug affecting the camp, but even with three of the usual back-four out the rearguard wasn’t breached, so defense was not the issue on the day. The other end of the pitch proved the problem point.

It was one of those days, the ball didn’t want to go into the back of the net. I got the midfield I asked for and as they peppered the goal from outside the 6 yard box I got the tactic I asked for, but we only worked their keeper three times in total from 17 shots,,our range efforts were poor.

Finishing chances created was also poor,,Kyogo, Maeda, Engels may all have buried those on another day, but didn’t on this particular day.

One might opine Yang and/or Palma was poor, possibly others too, but as explained on Saturday I wasn’t concerning myself with good or bad, rather just seeking three points by hook or by crook. Only one point travels back to Parkhead, and you know what, I’m not going to moan but rather accept the circumstances and just move on.

We won’t see that again, Yang and Ralston as the right side, both Twin Towers out simultaneously, only 3 on target from 17,,,it just wasn’t the usual Celtic yesterday. We don’t do nil-nil, I can’t recall the last time that scoreline appeared. The bar is set high enough that we now drop two points instead of gaining one, that’s a positive. We stay in a strong position for all remaining competitions having collected the completed one, I just can’t complain if a virus victim makeshift Celtic team completely dominates possession (78%), keeps a clean sheet, and takes something from the game.
It is what it is, we live to fight (better) another day and still have plenty of fish to fry.

For what it’s worth, I thought that although the actual football quality on display wasn’t great, it was a good crowd and atmosphere, decent enough surface, feels like a proper stadium,,,the Tangerines do add something to the top flight and it’s a fixture I can look forward to unlike certain others. I can see why they are mid table-ish,,,their shape makes them hard to beat as we found out. Now their defensive side is established, ideally they buy with the aim of strengthening their offensive side, and the SPL will genuinely have a new player in town.

We enter Christmas week with a scoreless draw but sitting pretty,,it’s gotta be said as we approach December’s end but January could be priceless.
More Ibrox pain.
More of a gap at the top.
More grasping for straws.
Qualify for CL knockouts.
Walk out of window stronger with new toys to play with absolutely cementing our position as not only domestic top dogs but prepared and clear favourites for any Champions League qualifiers that life throws at us.
A certain contract extension would really top off a fine month.

This time last year Santa Claus was famously boo-ed off the Park, but he infamously had the last say.
This time last year Brendan uttered his prophetic ‘this is when we come alive’ statement of intent.
We enter the holiest of weeks unbowed, unbroken, and born again on the biggest stage.
Our beloved Glasgow Celtic can test our patience and sanity at times, but it’s a gift to us all, one I’m delighted to share with you.

I won’t be writing another article until after the big day, so from Bobby and myself, with the greatest sincerity, Merry Christmas to each and every one of you.
We hope it’s a good one.

I will repeat ad nauseam forgiving does NOT mean forgetting.

I will stop when you and others who think that is what it means make the bloody effort to check the work of The International Forgiveness Institue to break the shell that encloses your understanding.

If you then wish to argue that professional pyschologists and Governments like in NI have sought IFI advice are wrong and you are right then by all means do so from a position of less ignorance.

I am always open to persuasion if reasons to change my mind are presented.

As regards the rest of your comment your imagination has gone over the edge.

When I reply to you I hold little hope you will change, but others who read my responses might be at a point in their lives now or in the future to consider how the process of forgiveness might change their lives.

So thanks for the opportunity to correct your thinking that others might share.

So what?

On the day they were not auditioning to sign for Celtic.

They were using what ability they did have to win a point for their team which they did.

Using your measure how many Celtic players would Atalanta sign to play in the Italian league?

Or Athletico Madrid last Oct/Nov.

Did Celtic play shite in both those drawn games or play the best they could?

If how the opposition play can be ruled out as a factor then so too can how we play as opposition be ruled out.

That does not make sense.

However as oil is to the oil industry so stupidity is to football.

That is not a personal jibe at you. It is a quote from Soccernomics aimed at football in general.

Great book for a better understanding of the nature of football as a unique industry.

Ok. You think there is no excuse I think there are reasons including how Dundee Utd were able to counter us helped by the weather and injuries that might have seen us carry a greater threat.

However your conclusion is much the same as mine although my conclusion takes into account the opposition we face.

Does your conclusion not take into account how the opposition will set out to thwart us?

Is how they go about their business not a risk to us getting a result?

Had just 1 of our 7 scoring efforts had gone in we would still be judged as not playing well but by ruling out one of the reasons we risk arriving at the wrong solution.

To solve a problem all the factors that cause it need to be given due consideration in order to arrive at the correct solution.

A couple of weeks back I concluded that the amount of time CCV spent on the ball was a contributing factor to performance reduction but the reason was the opposition caused it by stepping back to cut off telling passes.

However up to yesterday how the opposition played did not cost us points but yesterday because of what you called excuses and I called reasons it did.

My hope is that now with injuries and illness meaning we can lose points, BR will come up with the right solution to the problem in the likely prevailing circumstance within his power to do.

At the end of the day we both recognise performances have dropped off.

I have offered my solution earlier.

Let’s move on to discussing would it work and what would you do?

As I said it is not you I am talking to it is others with less closed minds that might find what the IFI have to say helpful.

So deride and snide. It’s all you do.

If others do not want me to correct you on the subject of forgiveness then I’ll chuck it.

Things are changing …

Station is now the biggest commuter station in Scotland — competition is Ayr.
The railways can’t believe their luck — stowed at the weekend.
70’s — season ticket sales were down to 6 at one time

The quarry has shut down and a national builder is building exec homes in the old quarry closest to the village. The locals are revolting — the builder is charging top dollar / seemingly 10% more than the same houses in Airdrie.

I can’t believe it.
They can’t believe it.
Airdrie can’t believe it
The railway bloke just nods.

Holy Cross has now went mainstream — 14 classes rather than 10.
Even more interlopers — the breakfast club started it / transfer requests from commuters.

Quite a mix of footballing personalities / folk at the school gate.
Connection between our RB yesterday and the DUtd manager.

Smithstone is now officially part of the new town.
Not quite sure if the world cup victory was passed on.

JQ’s hat-trick ball — last I heard it was up at the Chapel.
When the Miners Welfare shutdown — big modern clubhouse — it was homeless for a while.

JQ connection with Kiltoon — his daughter aka “Big Annie” looked after the P4’s at StP’s back in the day. I have no memory of her physical attributes but in the early 70’s she looked intimidating and then some.

I’ll not clog up the site anymore regarding our different opinions on yesterdays opposition.
What would I do? As I wrote yesterday, I’m no expert and haven’t a clue. Try a different approach against cloggers and 10 man walls might be a good start.
You think Brendan will change it up a bit and perhaps bring in fresh signings in this window? Definitely hope you’re on the money with that one.
it has however been needing tweaked for a couple of months now and I haven’t seen any signs of any changes or any improvements to see out games like yesterdays.

I don’t want to clog the blog on what is an issue of principle either which is why I suggested earlier that until end of Jan we go three at the back
From Ralston, AJ CCV Scales Trusty and Valle. All if fit and well.

4 in midfield from McGregor, McCowan, Bernardo, Hatate , Taylor (as he plays there mostly) and Engles

With Kyogo, Idha and Maeda up front to press and harry on long balls over the top and 4 man .midfield to win 2nd ball from a longer game.

You had no solutions but please forget the emotional comment, it’s a human trait not aimed at you personally and if you want to let’s hear your thoughts pros and cons on my suggestion which is in BRs power to implement even if pro tem.

I’m not sure we will do much player trading if by 3rd week in January we are more than 9 points clear unless it is a too good to miss deal with next seasons CL in mind.

It looks obvious that we don’t have like for like replacements with Yang and Palma. Are they that poor or do they not get enough game time,or lack of coaching?
CMG looks like he could do with a rest too now and again.
If we went with a back three, what about Valle in the mid? He’s a more forward facing player than Taylor.

Why not start from a neutral stance, free from an initial judgement the Board are guilty unless proven innocent.”

Mahe and I did start from a neutral stance. We all did. But in 2018,our experiences of board behaviour, particularly towards football progress and their stance against Res 12,had led the vast majority of us to have a negative view of them.

For me,that is still the case,to the extent that the summer window surprised me while the previous ones, summer 2021 and January 2022 aside, did not. But one swallow doesn’t make a summer,so my negative opinion of the board remains.

However,I will always give credit where it is due,no matter where or why. As I’ve frequently had to explain, mainly to MM who quite clearly marches to a different beat.

Some cracking free kicks there from Beckham and Riquelme, though I’m willing to bet they took a damn sight more of them than the 87 you showed in those clips. Beckham probably missed that number against Greece alone-before he remembered that he was Golden Bollocks and hit a beaut in injury time to qualify for the 2002 World Cup Finals in Japan/Korea.

Since I’ve been rabbiting on that, bar the Griffilo, we have had no one since the superb Naka that has a clue how to hit a free kick, I assumed most of the old timers ( the main demographic on here ) were familiar with Naka’s wonderful strike rate. But great to see them all again.😊👍
BMCUWP
Of course Beckham and Riquelme missed quite a few, but if they were playing now, they would probably miss fewer. Why? Well, as Ward-Prowse says, teams with at least one free kick expert study film of the opposition defending them, how the keeper lines up, how many are in the wall, how tall are they, do they all jump, does one lie down behind the wall, etc. Guys like Le Tissier, Naka, Juninho and Riquelme weighed all these things up for themselves without background research, but hit so many in practice, they were superconfident that they would score. Teams these days help their free kick taker with the background research. I am 100% certain that Celtic do not, because there is zero evidence of it on the field.

You are absolutely correct that Beckham missed a few in that Greece match. So many, in fact, that when the last one was given, another England player wanted to take it. Beckham said, “No, I’m having it.” The rest is history, because the goal was superb. It’s the same principle as a golf drive or long iron shot – hit it as hard as you can, but with a fine margin less than the force which would cause a loss of control.
Cheers

Thanks for your response. We could use Valle in midfield because he is technically excellent more in the Hatate mould but I was thinking GT plays most of the game there anyway and is more used to the robustness of the Scottish game and might be a good predictor of when to make a tackle to win a second ball clerance, like he did to set Kyogo free to score.

Not to change in the current circumstances and keep doing the same is a definition of insanity, but, to throw a pebble into the pond MM style, perhaps a lower points gap keeps the illusion of a competitive league alive until April?

On KT he would be part of the back three on a rotational basis to avoid injury burnout.

His attitude alone would invigorate his team mates and the support.

Shark is being jumped with all this new start evangelising.

I meant to add in your attempt to stop me posting as I do this question.

Is Christianity the basis on which Celtic were founded and what was one of Christ’s passions but forgiveness. Hi last words were “Father forgive them they no not what they do”

Evangelising is about spreading Christs message so better place than to clarify his message than on a blog that support a club based on Christ’s words?

Why are you so against reminding folk of Christian faith what they have already been taught but have perhaps forgotten. What is wrong in clarifying/correcting erroneous beliefs of forgiveness as you do?

Why should I be cowed from reminding folk of the Christ ethos on a Celtic blog by your derision, what better place to do it?

If that is evangelising then tough titty.

What are our plans for the future?
Do we have anyone with the vision of Wee FMcC?
What can we hope for regarding progress for the club?
The world moves on so why do we stand still?

Fedex Field at 26 years old is for the chop — same age as the L/L’s stand aka our newest.
The Main Stand will be celebrating its centenary in 1929 — surely we have plans?.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #26 DUNDEE UNITED 0 CELTIC 0*

Good evening, friends.
Note – please see details at the end for a longer than usual voting window after our next game…
A pretty underwhelming performance yesterday in pretty blustery conditions saw Celtic fail to score for the first time, domestically, this season.
We completely dominated the first half in probably the most one sided away game of 2024 but frustratingly we failed to create any real, clear chances. The second half saw Dundee United come into it a little bit more but without really troubling Kasper Schmeichel. As he does in almost every game, Brendan made a couple of substitutions on the hour mark and for a wee while Palma and Idah looked to have given us a bit more urgency. But despite the further introductions of Bernardo and Engels the game eventually petered out to a nil nil draw.
We have now played 26 games this season, winning 19, drawing 6 and losing just the 1. We have scored 71 and conceded 20 (domestically it’s 61-10 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Thanks as always to the 57 who voted this time around. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked. Poor old Yang was the only player not to register a vote.

Schmeichel: 12
Ralston: 6
Welsh: 23
Scales: 40
Taylor: 38
McGregor*: 8
McCowan:  16
Hatate: 9
Yang: 0
Kyogo: 1
Maeda: 1
Palma*: 1
Idah*: 9
Bernardo: 2
Engels: 2
Naebdy-Else: 3

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Dundee United are –
Scales – 5 points
Taylor – 4 points
Welsh – 3 points
McCowan – 2 points
Schmeichel – 1 point

And the overall positions after 26 games played are –
43 points – Kuhn
36 points – Scales
35 points – Bernardo, Hatate

Our next game is a 3.00pm home league game against Motherwell on St Stephen’s Day. As me and Mrs Baldie are off to a wedding the next day (and staying overnight, woo hoo!) then the voting window will stay open until 2.00pm on Saturday 28th December with the results posted later that afternoon.
Hail Hail!

“There is something else that bothers me when BMCU says SC has anti Board stance but it is right to recognise good initiatives when they happen.
==================
Glad you picked up on that.

I well understand the anger I wasn’t a happy bunny myself but this is how I now see things.

Celtic were never in a million years going let a form of Rangers disappear from the Scottish football landscape so anything that led to that was going to be resisted purely from a business perspective that supporters do not have to consider the consequences on the business of.
Finding Rangers guilty of fraud would have made the continuation of Rangers in any form nigh impossible, so the tactic was to prevent that outcome being reached
Celtic knew it was a possible outcome as I mentioned it when meeting Paul Brennan to discuss Res 12 before he backed out of the pretence of supporting it. They probably knew anyway long before Res12 was born to put focus on the matter.
Had Res 12 been passed a UEFA investigation in 2013 would have revealed what PL took to them on May 2012 in respect of Rangers use of ebts that based on a similar case of private contracts found at a Greek club when UEFA investigated a similar over due payable case, breached ten years not just one under a FFP rule on Fair Presentation of accounts. The compensation consequences of that being brought to light to the clubs in Europe that lost to an ebt fuelled Rangers were something UEFA would not wish to happen, so Celtic were not given support from UEFA, something which PL often said about pursuing Res12 and so he acted acted as what they saw as the best business interests of Celtic. Possibly UEFA might even have made a deal with Celtic to come inside the tent and piss out rather than stay on the outside and piss in. Hence PL on ECA etc and Two Board members in volved in developing FSR.PLs error was denying any part he played in the solution that kept Rangers in Scottish football, rather than explaining Celtic’s position and throwing Infantino under a bus.MN knew what was going on but followed orders and that is why he initiated the refund of legal expenses process. That brings us up to the time BR came back. It is inconceivable he came back on basis the policy was still dictated by the co-dependent relationship PL executed,A prime reason being Celtic had no need to continue with the same co dependent financial relationship of the past with Rangers as there was more gold in them thar UEFA hills than the Copeland Road Under ground. So a new policy had been embarked on with BRs arrival and we are still in the we’ll see stage of its longevity, but the past should not be used as a reason to think the future has been set in the same stone.Which is probably the time to refer to an Article of the dilemma Malmo and Swedish football faces as a result of there being no domestic competition to them and the unique approach to solving the problem, possibly only in Sweden because the population knows how much they rely on each other for individual prosperity.I have managed to get text copy of the relevant part of that article which might be used in a later blog to provoke a new line of thought on the business side of running Celtic that explains why decision’s were made that affect the quality of the football we watch then discuss.

MM

Their successes,in my opinion, are the ones I’ve congratulated them for. On here and elsewhere. That you are still scrabbling around to think of any suggests that there is little point in me repeating them,as you are undoubtedly going to disagree.

So,in order to avoid this and save the site a lot of scrolling-and me a lot of time-I’d rather not respond any further on the subject.

To the good folks on Sentinel Celts, which is all of you, including those I don’t see eye to eye on, I am conscious I have been posting a lot today, but blog therapy does help keep me positively thinking and God Bless you all for being here.

Evening

I am on to wish everybody a Happy Christmas although I find this blog an increasingly irksome read these days.

The relentless criticism of the team, its captain and the first team coach over most of the last three months from some contributors is fair enough- I’m far from happy with the lack of tactical variation (within games in particular) and I wish, as always, that we had better players than we do have. But it can be a bit repetitive – and I think that even if we lose both of our remaining games in 2024 we’ll have lost only 4 competitive this year which is fewer than we lost in 1967. Celtic must be doing something right but you’d be hard pressed to realise it here.

Much more annoying is the way so often the blog degenerates into a series of excruciating- and borderline unintelligible- exchanges involving Auldheid and Mad Mitch/Lost in Translation. Whilst I respect the former a great deal I think he is absolutely wasting his time trying to debate or discuss or call it what you will with his antagonist.

As for Mad Mitch/Lost in Translation I have in truth had one or two discussions with him that have bordered on the cordial (and which were for me at least interesting) but in the last few weeks he seems to have become much more confrontational- reminiscent of his gruesome spats with An Tearman on Celtic Quick News of a few years ago. I have no idea what this person’s motivation is (and I don’t think he is a troll or an impostor) but he has, intentionally or not, made this blog a humourless, aggravating place all day, most days.

I wish no ill will to anybody who posts here but there are times when those who post here can really get me down and recently has been such a time.

Merry Christmas, Mon the Hoops and see you on the 3rd of January 2025 all being well.

Jimbo
