Paradise Regained
Morning,all.
We are back in action today with a home match against Motherwell, our first time at home on Boxing Day for some time. Which is nice, because I’ll be there in person. Events have conspired against me this year and this is my first trip home since last Christmas-hopefully that won’t happen again!-so it will be my first time at Celtic Park since 2nd January. And that’s too big a gap anaw.
Of course, no matter how long any of us stay away or even if we are there for every home game, there is always that special feeling when The Holy Ground finally comes into sight. In my case, it is as I am walking down from Duke Street and those amazing high stands appear. I might be into my 60s now, but I can feel the hairs on the back of my neck rising just as they did when I was a wee 4yo seeing the floodlights peeking through the gloom as we came in from the Dalmarnock approach. It’s such a special feeling, and I hope it’s not just me!
Strictly speaking,we come into today’s match on the back of three successive draws. But since one of them includes the League Cup Final victory on penalties, who cares? (Actually, our opponents do, and they seem to be taking it rather badly, but I’ll briefly discuss that near the end of the article.) So we could probably do with a wee goalfest today just to settle the nerves a little, get our forward line back into the habit of hitting the back of the net, our midfield back into the habit of playing with their backs to our own goal rather than that of our opponents. It’s the start of a wee run of four games in ten days, three of which are at home. And they are the perfect opportunity to set us up for the second half of the season.
Apart from the importance of the three points, today is ideal for checking up on the progress of one of our rumoured transfer targets. Motherwell undoubtedly have one of the rising stars in the Scottish game, the 18yo Lennon Miller. While he is a midfielder, he is too young yet to have his “own” particular settled role there, being used right across the middle by his club as events dictate. And even at that tender age, he has captained the side, been called up to the national squad, and been “linked” to various clubs across England and the continent.
Is he someone we should be looking at? Of course he is, it would be foolish to say otherwise. And while we already have five players for the three midfield places, injury and suspension can soon make that look threadbare. I’ll pass on the likelihood of us signing him, other than to say that he probably won’t be at Motherwell too much longer. BR knows the type of player he wants, and the board have recently shown that they are happy enough to back his judgment.
Of more importance is the personnel we will be fielding today. Sunday saw us drop two points at Tannadice, due in no small part to a hugely depleted squad as injury and illness took their toll on us. I’m never in favour of fielding players who aren’t 100% fit, even when their replacements aren’t of the same quality. Let players recover fully before putting them back in the firing line; partially fit players rarely do themselves or the side justice, and can set back their recovery by some time. There may be no certainty about the starting XI or the result, but in football there never is.
Except of course there is always the certainty of our Ibrox-based rivals releasing a statement on the back of their latest temper tantrum! This one arrived at SFA HQ just in time for Christmas too, doncha just love them. Peace and goodwill to all men, etc. They are still slightly miffed about being awarded a free kick on the edge of the box last Sunday, and instead of blaming the two, possibly three, officials with most responsibility for that-it’s one, actually. Beaton blew the whistle for the foul before any penalty box controversy-they have now focused in on the lowest ranked official on the day,the VAR Assistant.
The hierarchy of matchday officials is:
Referee
VAR
Asst Referee 1 and 2
Fourth Official
VAR Assistant.
Blaming the VAR assistant is a bit like blaming the school janny when you fail your O-grades, but commonsense and the huns rarely go hand in hand. I doubt Frank Connor, for it is he, will be too bothered by it all, but it will be interesting to see how his career progresses from here. For a club which has only one voice and one vote at the table, same as every other club, they don’t half seem inclined to use it more often than any others. And the fact that they have yet to face a disrepute or similar charge just encourages them in their quest to steamroller their way through any and every regulation applied to the rest of us.
If the SFA and other member clubs are as fed up with it as we are, then they have a strange way of showing it. Throw the bloody book at them, same as they would any other club, manager or player who came out with this even once. Otherwise, get bloody used to it.

Frodsham.
McG did well to get pass in Yang lacks the technique to gather. As Fan says his body shape doesn’t help.
??????
He was in the box going forward. The pass was behind him.
There have been a few similar passes in attacking positions. Not just to Yang.
It was nothing like the old James Forrest style of always facing his own goal while out wide.
Engels appears at penalty and scores
1-0
Frodsham.
Maybe so but Yang does not have the quality to compensate
However redeemed him self a bit on penalty.
Yang gets penalty after VAR check, soft but correct 😁
1-0 Engles.
Maybe the Mothers will come out to play now?
Idah booked stupidly.

It was a terrible pass. Try a bit of forgiveness to the wee guy.
I will then forgive McGregor for not having the quality to play a decent 5 yard pass.
Another below par performance thus far😕
Not about opponents coming out to play.
Our style ,system and players have become predictable so teams happy to watch us have the ball and shuffle side to side and backwards.
We do look like we have taken our training ground rituals too seriously with zero creativity or self expression.)
82% possession, 3 shots on target!
I’m with Frodshambhoy.. the majority of passes to Yang are either short or to the wrong side. He is unable to use his speed as the ball is passed directly at him or behind but seldom ahead of him. All wingers thrive on balls to run onto.
As someone said the lesser spotted Engels appeared for the penalty! Have to say, he takes a great penalty.
My plea for second half… ffs up the pace.
I’d need to see it again. I was given credit to McGregor finally running with ball into the box and getting a pass in.
Yang I don’t think has the required precision overall in his game.
I’m actually looking for evidence he has in order to give him credit but I just have not seen it yet.
Same applies to Engles, in fact in all players and my ffs reaction comes when they fail to provide some evidence.
For forgiveness to apply a deliberate wrong has to exist and I saw nothing deliberate in both players and if you looked into the whole process you would not have mentioned it.
However since I think you were not intending arm in the mention of forgiveness I again have nothing to forgive.
Difficult to add anything fresh to what has been said.
Approach is overly ponderous which is now becoming the norm
Left midfield clogged with Taylor, Bernardo occupying the same zone.
Hope for better in the second half.
Rebus
All bunched up at the edge of Motherwell’s box – far too tight FFS
Bernardo ball control lurching into ffs territory.
Tony Watt with an online clearance for Celtic😮
Thought the ref was out of his depth in the first half. It’s becoming more apparent he’s just another one of the production line!

2-0 Maeda from corner routine 😁

Wow. Calm down.
Its 2-0, relax.
On last attack where Well got a corner their player was entirely alone in midfield with no Celtic midfielder anywhere in view.
Our midfield shape is hard to discern when we don’t have ball.
Maeda 2-0 header from corner.
Good set piece for a change
Liam with an assist
I should explain ffs is just an immediate reaction to a poor touch or pass or backward pass when a forward pass was on.
That pass from McG to GT was a FFS event.
As was Ralston’s cross attempt.
We take a quick free kick to McGregor in midfield who hesitates and makes a square pass!!!
I used all my ffs’ on Taylor in the first 10 minutes that I forgot to keep some for some others!
Bernardo gives us something no one else does. Shame he has been hooked again.
Would like to have seen Hatate on for McGregor just to see if that combo could work
Bluegrass.
Certain players are more ffs attractive than others.
I’m running out of ffs now too.

Ffs 😅😂 and have to put up with BBC sportsound ffs!
Kuhn 3-0
I was calming down. Forgot to add the smiley.
It was a forgiveness in joke.
Kühn 3-0
And relax.
Good use of squad by BR.
That Khun guy has a lot of quality and technique 😁😁
Guy on Mothers TV said this will be Kettlewell’s 1st defeat as a manager at Celtic Park.
Good 😁
Reo great strike 4-0
Reo 4-0
The Reol Hatate turned up today.
4 0
See what I did there. 🙂
4-0 one of these shots would’ve been handy at Tannadice
I think our best shooting chance there was when CalMac was pushed in the back as he shaped to shoot on the edge of the box. Still don’t know why it wasn’t a booking.
Since introduction of Hatate and Kühn we have been a lot more positive in our play.A good example of positive benefits of forward passing!
Frodshambhoy
Maybe the ref anticipated Calmac was going to play a sideways or backwards pass so no denial of scoring opportunity.
Had a feeling it’d be a good day.
F-T 4-0
A good second half.
Fan – The objective of possession football is to wear down the opposition, then strike as they begin to tire.
Perfectly executed today.

🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great move but lacking a finish at the end of the game.
Engles MoM?
I suppose as he never had any ffs moments that might explain but putting away a penalty is not deserving of MoM.
He was OK but Hatate showed more MOM level of performance than Engles.
Celtic handed a penalty right on half time
