Paradise Regained
Morning,all.
We are back in action today with a home match against Motherwell, our first time at home on Boxing Day for some time. Which is nice, because I’ll be there in person. Events have conspired against me this year and this is my first trip home since last Christmas-hopefully that won’t happen again!-so it will be my first time at Celtic Park since 2nd January. And that’s too big a gap anaw.
Of course, no matter how long any of us stay away or even if we are there for every home game, there is always that special feeling when The Holy Ground finally comes into sight. In my case, it is as I am walking down from Duke Street and those amazing high stands appear. I might be into my 60s now, but I can feel the hairs on the back of my neck rising just as they did when I was a wee 4yo seeing the floodlights peeking through the gloom as we came in from the Dalmarnock approach. It’s such a special feeling, and I hope it’s not just me!
Strictly speaking,we come into today’s match on the back of three successive draws. But since one of them includes the League Cup Final victory on penalties, who cares? (Actually, our opponents do, and they seem to be taking it rather badly, but I’ll briefly discuss that near the end of the article.) So we could probably do with a wee goalfest today just to settle the nerves a little, get our forward line back into the habit of hitting the back of the net, our midfield back into the habit of playing with their backs to our own goal rather than that of our opponents. It’s the start of a wee run of four games in ten days, three of which are at home. And they are the perfect opportunity to set us up for the second half of the season.
Apart from the importance of the three points, today is ideal for checking up on the progress of one of our rumoured transfer targets. Motherwell undoubtedly have one of the rising stars in the Scottish game, the 18yo Lennon Miller. While he is a midfielder, he is too young yet to have his “own” particular settled role there, being used right across the middle by his club as events dictate. And even at that tender age, he has captained the side, been called up to the national squad, and been “linked” to various clubs across England and the continent.
Is he someone we should be looking at? Of course he is, it would be foolish to say otherwise. And while we already have five players for the three midfield places, injury and suspension can soon make that look threadbare. I’ll pass on the likelihood of us signing him, other than to say that he probably won’t be at Motherwell too much longer. BR knows the type of player he wants, and the board have recently shown that they are happy enough to back his judgment.
Of more importance is the personnel we will be fielding today. Sunday saw us drop two points at Tannadice, due in no small part to a hugely depleted squad as injury and illness took their toll on us. I’m never in favour of fielding players who aren’t 100% fit, even when their replacements aren’t of the same quality. Let players recover fully before putting them back in the firing line; partially fit players rarely do themselves or the side justice, and can set back their recovery by some time. There may be no certainty about the starting XI or the result, but in football there never is.
Except of course there is always the certainty of our Ibrox-based rivals releasing a statement on the back of their latest temper tantrum! This one arrived at SFA HQ just in time for Christmas too, doncha just love them. Peace and goodwill to all men, etc. They are still slightly miffed about being awarded a free kick on the edge of the box last Sunday, and instead of blaming the two, possibly three, officials with most responsibility for that-it’s one, actually. Beaton blew the whistle for the foul before any penalty box controversy-they have now focused in on the lowest ranked official on the day,the VAR Assistant.
The hierarchy of matchday officials is:
Referee
VAR
Asst Referee 1 and 2
Fourth Official
VAR Assistant.
Blaming the VAR assistant is a bit like blaming the school janny when you fail your O-grades, but commonsense and the huns rarely go hand in hand. I doubt Frank Connor, for it is he, will be too bothered by it all, but it will be interesting to see how his career progresses from here. For a club which has only one voice and one vote at the table, same as every other club, they don’t half seem inclined to use it more often than any others. And the fact that they have yet to face a disrepute or similar charge just encourages them in their quest to steamroller their way through any and every regulation applied to the rest of us.
If the SFA and other member clubs are as fed up with it as we are, then they have a strange way of showing it. Throw the bloody book at them, same as they would any other club, manager or player who came out with this even once. Otherwise, get bloody used to it.

Lighten up, Fan, it’s Christmas mate!
There’s polarised views on here, some people see the game differently, that’s just how it is! From my point of view the constant negativity is a bit wearisome! Of course we can improve, yes we can be better but the recycling of the same comments and criticism offers nowt to the blog!
I watched the game at Celtic park with bmcuwp. I felt first half we were much the same as we have been of late, pretty turgid and lacking imagination in the final third. Second half we came out with a different attitude I felt. We were much quicker, with Bernardo and Engles starting to click more. Hatate came on and again was much quicker than he has been. We have always said when we play quickly teams struggle. Let’s see what Sunday brings but I just felt things were much better today.
The Huns brought a bloody air raid siren to the game 🤣🤣🤣
ATOB…unfortunately, too many Festive vinho tintos and Moscow Mules put paid to the game for me! The wee guy went, though, and said it was good. He agreed that Kuhn and Reo lifted it in the 2nd half.
Good to see the game with your bro!
Happy Christmas to you all! 🎄🍀🎄🍀🎄
Cheers McCaff,
Never mind, you don’t miss many games, it’s allowed to over indulge now and again. You’ll be back in your usual seat on Sunday I’m sure.
ATOB…as soon as the wee guy’s lift came i was gutted I didn’t make the effort! Me and the missus just put on Wallace and Gromit, instead! Fantastic Boxing Day afternoon!!
Big Phil’ the ball was too round, our CEO ,whoever the fk he is,has a meeting with Ian Maxwell tomorrow, to get a replay sorted out,…..’
BADABING
Is that a replay for the cup final or for today?
Or both?
Took my grand daughter to her first game at Celtic park today. She loves Engels. Made her day when he scored. Looks like the females in my household are fighting each other for Mrs B’s ticket now.
Only an idiot would get involved in that 3 generation contest.

With tongue a bit in cheek how about?
Watching Celtic play I had an idea that instead of MoM invites we suggest which players had ffs moments and how many during the games.
A ffs event would be when a players fails to control the ball when not under pressure, fails to make an easy 3 or 4 yard pass when not under pressure, makes such a pass that puts a team mate under pressure, makes a backward pass when with space to turn or a square pass when a forward pass is on or makes a weak tackle when strength is needed.
I was running out of ffss today spread amongst a few players and McG probably because he is on the ball most featured a bit. Yang too.
Who was your ffs players based on the criteria and your feelings at the time.
I say feelings because during a game they take charge.
However feelings are neither right nor wrong, they just are and even though during a game there are some ffs moments that does not mean Celtic are shite once the game ends.
Happy Stephen’s Day one and all 😎 Our first half was a hard watch with an invisible right winger but much improved second half performance 🍀
As for the late evening entertainment 🤔 The roof came of The Vogue 🙉
Huns cheated again. Saints should never have had penalty for clear assault on goal keeper. Saints second goal was offside. Get ready for next week’s laments, all they have left.
They are pitiful, can’t wait for January 2 game.
Hail Hail. All our midfield players looked good in second half.
12pts ahead
If Celtic win Jan 2nd I think it’s possible that the league can be won before the split?
Europe
Now that’s a different matter
The tribute act have just released another statement demanding that that the players today aren’t allowed anywhere near another rangers game
I’m actually going to miss the big Belgian clown….
A Happy St Stephen’s Day to one and all 🙏🍀
Fan,
I see you replied to my query about the value of Idah and Engels.Thanks.
I have fluctuating opinions on our high priced duo. Reportedly 20 million expenditure but I do not feel that there has been a 20 mill impact on the team/squad. Both seem like nice guys and have been accepted by the group, which is important.
At the outset, BR stated that both have the potential to improve. I hope that is correct. I can see that might happen with Engels. His ball control is quite good and he uses space. He can take a good penalty. Although we rarely see it, he has a powerful shot. His first two games were impressive, then he shaded off. My assessment has to limited because I do not see the whole field. I did see him marking and needling L. Miller during the game. May there is a lot more to him off the ball, than I get to see. Alternatively, he may only enter the game in bursts. I just wonder if he was the best way to spend 11 million.
Idah is a different matter altogether. His ball control is not the greatest and, for a big guy, he is not very aggressive. He swings and misses the ball too often for my liking. Has he got better as the season has progressed? Frankly, I do not see it but, perhaps, he will go on a scoring spree and we shall see a 9 mill striker.
To date, I am more impressed with the contributions of Bernardo, McCowan, and Valle…and all for much less than 20 million. If memory serves me, I do not recall a lineup to buy Idah and Engels.
Rebus
That was as bad a first half performance we’ve seen this season🙈
@ Fan
want to tell me when you become manager and replace ‘Rodger’s’ and bin ‘mgregor’!
what’s your qualifications for the job?
What a wonderful St Stevens day for us all in the end today.
Wasn’t quite looking that way at 3:40, mind you.
Although our build-up play was decent enough, that final ball was badly missing for ourselves in the first half.
On the rare occasions that a final ball was found, then the finished touch was still missing.
So, getting the penalty, they saved ourselves at the end of the first half, especially as frustrations were starting to grow.
The second half was one we have become more used to seeing from our team. The introduction of kuhn and Hatate certainly helped matters. In the end, ran out very comfortable winners, and finally getting back to producing a decent enough display from our player’s imo.
Highlights of the day, was seeing Kuhn returning, and scoring, especially as growing fears, that he could be unavailable to ourselves for a period of time.
Also seeing Hatate showing that he still is a majestic footballer on his day, and hopefully plenty more contributions like today, before the end of the season would be most welcome.
Only gripe, is that with all our possession and control of the game, we still only had 2 threatening moments on goal from kyogo and idah with 1 each, that I can recall?
For our strikers, would like to start seeing a better return than that, even if a lack of service to them, could be improved somewhat also imo?
However, our 12 days of Christmas have been brilliant and santa was very generous to ourselves.
To receive the magical 119 trophy in the league cup, and extend our lead in our “Proper 55” league title quest, made a wonderful Christmas period for all Celtic supporters.
Still need to finish the year in style, and then on to the victoriana toilet, to begin the start of 25 to match the year of 24, in the same manner.
Expect the smell to be more toxic within that shithole, if that’s even possible, upon our arrival.
Still expect ourselves to come away smelling of roses, all the same, on the day.
Already getting excited for what lies ahead for ourselves in 2025, but before then, wishing all Celts a very happy new and successful year ahead

Johnno
The 12 days of Christmas have really just begun.
Starts with the Nativity through to the Epiphany.( Jan 6th).
I share your joy that it will be a special time – and the Huns, who have had their Epiphany early, will be illuminated further on the second.
