Another Tough Trip

Morning,all.

Another game tonight against Taysiders, seems we play them every second week these days. This time it is a trip to Dens Park to take on Dundee who are in a decent run of form. Two wins and a draw in their last four games has certainly been an improvement on the form they had shown beforehand, and they are not to be taken lightly.

As was shown in their last game, a rather enjoyable draw against some plucky visitors from Ibrox who may just have benefitted from a dodgy refereeing decision just before they equalised. But every match is a whole new ball game, so to speak. We may have more than double their points tally, but that will count for nothing when the whistle blows. Neither our manager nor our players will be approaching this in a complacent frame of mind-at least, they had better not be!-and we will know that we are in a game.

I expect this match to differ in two very important aspects-even apart from the result-from our last visit to Tayside just before Christmas. Firstly, the game will not be played in a howling, swirling and unplayable gale. Secondly, the home side might just try to get out of their own half. Dundee United only had one plan going into that game-to keep the score to nil. For both sides! Hell knows how they are currently third in the table, that was the worst ninety minutes I’ve sat through in a long time. Dundee though at least try to play football, and their coach wouldn’t have it any other way.

They had ten players missing on Thursday night, and will be hoping to have a few of them at least available tonight. To be honest, I hope they do. Especially Lyall Cameron. He and his midfield partner Josh Mulligan have both been impressive this season any time I’ve seen them, which is usually against us or in the highlights round-ups at the weekend. That should, you would think, give manager Tony Docherty hope for the future. Sadly, Dundee seem to have adopted a policy of keeping most player contracts to a maximum of two years, and both of them are out of contract at the end of the season. Neither has shown any intention of signing a new contract either, which means the club will likely lose them for the dreaded “compensation fee” that is the curse of the lower clubs these days.

Of course, Dundee have used the system to their benefit in the past, most obviously Luke McCowan from Ayr United a few years ago. They have also benefitted from the Bosman ruling, so there is a strong element of biter bit here. But it must be bloody soul-destroying to watch your youngsters come through the ranks and walk away for peanuts, having established their credentials in the game. Let’s hope they don’t build on those tonight!

Celtic are likely to have Kühn back, though whether he will start is a moot point. I think he will probably come on with about twenty minutes or so left. Expect then a similar line-up to Saturday in Dingwall. Give that “new formation” up front another look, huh? And let’s hope too that we get to see young Johnny Kenny make another appearance in his favoured Hoops. He looked bright and eager against Ross County, and certainly had many of us wondering if we have nurtured a gem.

The most important thing about tonight of course is three points. In any league match, those three points are paramount. Formations and performances and even returning players are only filling the minor places. Get this one out of the way and look forward to a difficult Scottish Cup-tie at the weekend. And who knows, maybe even some new signings, seeing as it’s January.

Maybe someone should send Michael Nicholson a new diary to remind him.

Last year, our charity drives raised over £4000 for deserving causes. You are truly a wonderful collective, giving selflessly to others in need.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The bulk of the money was split fairly evenly between our two nominated causes, which were
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and Blood Cancer UK.

New Year, New Cause! From 1st January till 30th June, we will switch our attentions to raising funds for another source of wonderful work on behalf of those who need it most.

MacMillan Cancer Care

Once again, the donations page has been set up for us by CHALMERSBHOY, and my grateful thanks to him for doing this and so much more.

First class lead article, as usual.
I watched ACSOM earlier, and John Paul was of the theory that Celtic are biding their time to see how we fare against Young Boys, and the activity ( or lack thereof ) in the market will depend on that result.

I don’t agree with such a course of action, but Celtic have previous for similar, but not precisely the same, scenarios. It could mean a frantic last 5 days, but many ducks would need to have been placed in a row prior to Jan 29.

As a wiser man than I has occasionally mentioned on this fine site – We’ll see.

Jan 29th?

Apparently the window is open until February 3rd in most leagues. We play YB on Wednesday 22nd, so 12 days thereafter to get business done.
Plenty of time if we are to conduct business.

Surely it’s too early for even the most angsty amongst the support to be stressing out over something they cannot control?

By the way, ACSOM is presented by Paul John Dykes.

Glad we got a glimpse of Kenny on Saturday.
Showed some promise, even if we have to forgive the missed sitter.
Perhaps we should thank Shamrock Rovers for aiding his progress by giving them Adam for the rest of the season.

See if a loan spell has the desired effect and helps him find some form.

There is absolutely no reason to be waiting until after the YB game.
What about getting the new players bedded for the play offs and planning for next season.
Oh, I forgot we don’t do that , just reactive planning from us and lastminute.com.

Twenty-four-year-old Celtic winger Luis Palma’s proposed move to Rayo Vallecano has collapsed after the Spanish club were placed under a transfer ban.

Never proactive, no succession planning.

Whether Palma leaves of not , we still need at least one more winger.

January 14, 2025 10:52 am

January is a difficult window to navigate and a loan or two may be the order of the day.

Up front, John Kenny is a good addition back into the squad…but is he eligible for European games or is he cup tied till later rounds?

Palma staying and Yang’s constant availability probably means that we won’t be signing a new winger for now…..unless we lose one. However, Saturday proved we have options in emergency with Kyogo. But it needs addressing.

Midfield is fine for now, but a number 6 is definitely required long term

As for LB , again KT won’t be coming anytime soon, so, we need cover and I think we’ll look at what’s available in Scotland as our ventures further afield have been terrible in that area.

Updated reports in Spain that Rayo Vallecano won’t be stopped from registering new players after all, and have found out there’s been no punishment handed out by FIFA. Palma for the off again then? HH

Some split views upon how we should be operating as a club, while the window is open?

Can be regarded as an unwanted distraction, especially upon match days like today.

We are certainly not use to this type of January, with no winter break, along with 2 CL matches still to be played. So this is potentially the look of this window from now on, and certainly a view ways to look at how it should be handled?

Yet work has already been done, with both Dane Murray and Johnny Kenny, added as B list players already. Not sure if that makes them eligible for the young boys game, but it shows that are homegrown requirements for next season is being addressed.

Personally don’t believe that to much if anything, will be done before the young boys game is completed. The result of that match, could well determine which direction this window is going to go, especially with a fair few directions it could well take at present?

Even tonight throws up the unanswered questions still?
Should kuhn be risked, Taylor or valle to start, what role should kyogo be given, same midfield to start again?
The unanswered questions are becoming a theme of this season, and possibly one we may have to start getting use to, especially with the amount of games involved, with such a quick turnaround.
So if an injury was to occur tonight for a key player, will that totally change our current transfer plans that might be in operation?

As Just Sayin’ correctly wrote at 3:35am, I managed to get both the Young Boys game date and Paul John Dykes name wrong in just a couple of sentences.😱

I’ll either have to take more coffee, spend a minute reviewing my text, or lay off these left over Purple Hearts.😅

The Palma saga is an example of Murphy’s Law of the Unexpected kicking in, and hopefully a warning to get transfer dealings done expeditiously. I note that the Sheep have now signed 4 players. With any luck, it may stiffen their resistance at Snake Mountain tomorrow, and break their dreadful run of results. In the meantime, Tony Docherty has signed a left back, who we may face today. Also surprised at McInnes managing to get a loan deal from Liverpool for Calvin Ramsay, and I presume we will see him on Saturday.

Now for a coffee, and a text check.😊

Good evening from sunny (well, it was until darkness fell) Anstruther. 2 nights booked I this Metropolis and I’ve already discovered that many of the restaurants and bars are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays! Managed lunch in a wee deli full of rather old looking ramblers, average age 81. Only as they were leaving did I notice the oldest of the lot, a wee crabbit looking granny, put on her woolly pom pom hat – Union Jack on the back and RFC on the front. Mrs B warned me strongly NOT to suggest that the hat would help in minus 15 conditions.
Not expecting to see any of tonight’s game as dinner booked for 7.30 but given the recent non stop run of live games I’m sure I’ll survive this once.

Something just burst into my brain. Anyone remember some of the Dundee team that went to the semi of the European Cup?

Alex Hamilton was the RB, also Scotland’s RB. Was Bobby Cox the Lb? Was Bert Slater the goalie

Ian Ure, with his blond hair, the CB.

No idea the half backs.

I guess at Gordon Smith, Andy Penman, Alan Gilzean, Alan Cousins, ??? Hugh Brown.

I could look it up but it is more fun this way.

Alan Gilzean…one of my favourite players.

Speaking of headers, I love players who master the art of hanging in the air. Law, Alan McGraw, Gillie come to mind as specialists in this art form.

All the best,

Pele and Cristiano are probably tops for that ability, but Falcao, Llorente, and Lewandowski are no slouches. PSV’s Luuk De Jong has scored at least 85 goals with his head. It’s uncanny how he almost stops in midair. Joe Jordan and a certain Swede with Rastafarian locks had the same ability.
