Another Tough Trip
Morning,all.
Another game tonight against Taysiders, seems we play them every second week these days. This time it is a trip to Dens Park to take on Dundee who are in a decent run of form. Two wins and a draw in their last four games has certainly been an improvement on the form they had shown beforehand, and they are not to be taken lightly.
As was shown in their last game, a rather enjoyable draw against some plucky visitors from Ibrox who may just have benefitted from a dodgy refereeing decision just before they equalised. But every match is a whole new ball game, so to speak. We may have more than double their points tally, but that will count for nothing when the whistle blows. Neither our manager nor our players will be approaching this in a complacent frame of mind-at least, they had better not be!-and we will know that we are in a game.
I expect this match to differ in two very important aspects-even apart from the result-from our last visit to Tayside just before Christmas. Firstly, the game will not be played in a howling, swirling and unplayable gale. Secondly, the home side might just try to get out of their own half. Dundee United only had one plan going into that game-to keep the score to nil. For both sides! Hell knows how they are currently third in the table, that was the worst ninety minutes I’ve sat through in a long time. Dundee though at least try to play football, and their coach wouldn’t have it any other way.
They had ten players missing on Thursday night, and will be hoping to have a few of them at least available tonight. To be honest, I hope they do. Especially Lyall Cameron. He and his midfield partner Josh Mulligan have both been impressive this season any time I’ve seen them, which is usually against us or in the highlights round-ups at the weekend. That should, you would think, give manager Tony Docherty hope for the future. Sadly, Dundee seem to have adopted a policy of keeping most player contracts to a maximum of two years, and both of them are out of contract at the end of the season. Neither has shown any intention of signing a new contract either, which means the club will likely lose them for the dreaded “compensation fee” that is the curse of the lower clubs these days.
Of course, Dundee have used the system to their benefit in the past, most obviously Luke McCowan from Ayr United a few years ago. They have also benefitted from the Bosman ruling, so there is a strong element of biter bit here. But it must be bloody soul-destroying to watch your youngsters come through the ranks and walk away for peanuts, having established their credentials in the game. Let’s hope they don’t build on those tonight!
Celtic are likely to have Kühn back, though whether he will start is a moot point. I think he will probably come on with about twenty minutes or so left. Expect then a similar line-up to Saturday in Dingwall. Give that “new formation” up front another look, huh? And let’s hope too that we get to see young Johnny Kenny make another appearance in his favoured Hoops. He looked bright and eager against Ross County, and certainly had many of us wondering if we have nurtured a gem.
The most important thing about tonight of course is three points. In any league match, those three points are paramount. Formations and performances and even returning players are only filling the minor places. Get this one out of the way and look forward to a difficult Scottish Cup-tie at the weekend. And who knows, maybe even some new signings, seeing as it’s January.
Maybe someone should send Michael Nicholson a new diary to remind him.

in general, my sense of BR’s team is that it is rather like a NFL team with extras wide receivers and running backs, but no quarterback on the field
Brendan raging the same as us there
MIT
aye so Calmac cant cut it

Evening
Got a bit of startling news ( not in a good way] about a friend during 2nd half which distracted me a fair bit. The closing stages were a blur but I gather we drew.
Anyway after the 2nd equaliser it was all a bit too much like Rugby Park 13 months- we were largely outplayed. I thought we played well up to that 2nd goal but even at half time I said to my nephew, whom I watched the game with, I thought we might lose- Dundee is the best Scottish team – other than R2FC perhaps- we’ve played this season. Trusty increasingly looks a dud, Idah does not look like scoring and Bernardo, as I said before, is not as good as he looks. The substitutions made the team worse tonight which is unusual.
I’d have taken 13points ahead ( assuming Aberdeen loses tomorrow) 12 days ago but there may be trouble ahead.
Bluegrass,
If you want to swap ou r manager for a guy that was assistant to Derek McCinnes, you go right ahead ..as long as you are happy. 👍
I’ll stick with the guy who literally looks unbeatable in this country.
as long as you are still happy ….
There is a constant when we speak about the left side of defence and its Taylor. Have a look at him chasing back, he’s still at the halfway line and Yang is in the box.
Daizen covers him constantly and we should get KT in now never mind the CL game.
Cup final we take aff Trusty.
Ibrox we blame Scales.
Sometimes, just sometimes your leftback needs to cover the left Centre half.
He’s been the weakest link for years and everyone every window has been demanding a new Leftback, and still nothing.
Get it done!
Mags
Definitely, Mags.
Think i might have brought on Johnny Kenny before Palma.
BAD, I would have brought on Bain before Palma, another impostor.
Idah was an empty jersey, but we know there is a player in there, or do we ?
Just had a Quick Look at Idah’s stats for this season. If that’s what you would call them.
he scored the 6th of 6 goals against St J. He scored the 5th of 5 against Slovan, the 3rd of 3 v Motherwell, the 5 th of 5 v Ross and the 3rd and 4th of 4 v Hearts one was a penalty. He also scored twice against Falkirk. He last scored 13 games ago. You are playing with 10 men with him on the park. Monumental waste of money in the Raphael Poops mould. Doesn’t even contribute assists. Better forward on tonight and maybe chances taken and game over. Can’t keep playing this guy.
Pitymenevin,
Taykor is playing to instruction. He cannot be blamed for Trusty being as weak as water out on the touch line for the second Dundee goal. He was awful from the moment he headed the ball up in the air and let Simon Murray in first half. He could not sort his feet out several times, something that is not uncommon for him. Has anyone told him when you get new boots that you’re supposed to cut the wee bit of elastic that pairs them together?
We have got a problem here. Trusty was hooked in the LCF because he was awful, scales got two games then went to ibrox and was terrible so he was out and in came trusty. What do we do now because on that performance he now needs dropped but we can’t have players thinking every time they play poorly they’re out. Nawrocki anyone?!!
I should also say that as a big Calmac fan I feel he needs a spell out the team. He is not working hard enough to get on the ball. He is becoming very content at telling the two centre half’s to come forward and he stands beside his marker. The perpetual motion of two seasons ago is long gone. Maybe if he had wee rest now and again he would be more mobile when he does play.
BAD
I was stunned that BR didn’t bring on Kenny. Bad mistake!
Mags
Great shout about Basel. Although I think they were called Basle then.
🤔
Finally, I don’t want to talk about Idah because I’ll get banned from the blog 😡😡
I was 50- 50 on KT ,bring him home
BAD, you’ve misread it again mate. I want Brendan to be the best he can be but imho, and it’s only an opinion, he looks like he needs a hand in the dug out.
Even if it’s just to tell Brendan he doesn’t need to waiting an hour to make changes.
Tony Docherty has coached his team well from what I’ve seen, he reads the game well, he allows his players to cross the halfway line throughout the 90 mins. Would he be better than Kennedy? Who knows. Maybe I’m being disrespectful to TB who probably wants be the best he can be as a coach/ manager.
Whatever it is, I like his attitude to the game. Very refreshing.
A Thing Of Beauty
Sincere apologies for bringing up the A word 😳
BAD – We had used our 5 subs, but Kenny should have been given a chance earlier
ATOB, that might be why I walk like a penguin.
I would ask that you watch their first goal again, and you will see Taylor not chasing back.
That’s not good enough. CCV and Trusty ran past him.
I would agree that Trusty did have a stinker tonight, but I would rather stick with him as I believe we can’t drop everyone for one bad game.
Would you agree that GT and the leftback position has been a area needing addressed for the last 2/3 seasons?
Pitymevin
“I believe we can’t drop everyone for one back game.”
Totally agree but he should have been hooked at HT.
Then reassessed for the next game between him and other CB’s
I would go with Kenny up front next game with Kyogo playing the floating roll and Engles and Calmac playing the pivot.
I enjoy watching Kyogo getting more touches of the ball and his intelligence on and off the ball is better than anything else we’ve got. But when he plays lone striker he’s lucky to get 10/15 touches a game.
Pitymenevin,
I absolutely agree that the left back position should have been addressed for the last two years. I’m not a fan of GT but I don’t think he was as poor as Trusty who was awful. I also agree that we cannot drop players for one poor game but with regard to the left centre back that’s what’s been happening. Goodness knows who will play against killie and Young boys. In my opinion trusty is mentally suspect. One mistake and he’s all over the place. Scales seems a bit better at brushing off his mistakes but maybe he’s had more practice. What a conundrum.
Mags, it’s no that bad, it’s just distraction at the end of the day.
PB I didn’t think he was that bad first half. Second half he was sticking
ATOB, they’ve say practice makes perfect 👍
Anyway GNGB
Aye let’s get a left back
spend some money
not on a Nicaraguan or Kilmarnock reject or Arsenal reject but you know someone who’s good and cost a bit. Get the Gombeen oan. He can tell us what we can afford
