Another Tough Trip

Morning,all.

Another game tonight against Taysiders, seems we play them every second week these days. This time it is a trip to Dens Park to take on Dundee who are in a decent run of form. Two wins and a draw in their last four games has certainly been an improvement on the form they had shown beforehand, and they are not to be taken lightly.

As was shown in their last game, a rather enjoyable draw against some plucky visitors from Ibrox who may just have benefitted from a dodgy refereeing decision just before they equalised. But every match is a whole new ball game, so to speak. We may have more than double their points tally, but that will count for nothing when the whistle blows. Neither our manager nor our players will be approaching this in a complacent frame of mind-at least, they had better not be!-and we will know that we are in a game.

I expect this match to differ in two very important aspects-even apart from the result-from our last visit to Tayside just before Christmas. Firstly, the game will not be played in a howling, swirling and unplayable gale. Secondly, the home side might just try to get out of their own half. Dundee United only had one plan going into that game-to keep the score to nil. For both sides! Hell knows how they are currently third in the table, that was the worst ninety minutes I’ve sat through in a long time. Dundee though at least try to play football, and their coach wouldn’t have it any other way.

They had ten players missing on Thursday night, and will be hoping to have a few of them at least available tonight. To be honest, I hope they do. Especially Lyall Cameron. He and his midfield partner Josh Mulligan have both been impressive this season any time I’ve seen them, which is usually against us or in the highlights round-ups at the weekend. That should, you would think, give manager Tony Docherty hope for the future. Sadly, Dundee seem to have adopted a policy of keeping most player contracts to a maximum of two years, and both of them are out of contract at the end of the season. Neither has shown any intention of signing a new contract either, which means the club will likely lose them for the dreaded “compensation fee” that is the curse of the lower clubs these days.

Of course, Dundee have used the system to their benefit in the past, most obviously Luke McCowan from Ayr United a few years ago. They have also benefitted from the Bosman ruling, so there is a strong element of biter bit here. But it must be bloody soul-destroying to watch your youngsters come through the ranks and walk away for peanuts, having established their credentials in the game. Let’s hope they don’t build on those tonight!

Celtic are likely to have Kühn back, though whether he will start is a moot point. I think he will probably come on with about twenty minutes or so left. Expect then a similar line-up to Saturday in Dingwall. Give that “new formation” up front another look, huh? And let’s hope too that we get to see young Johnny Kenny make another appearance in his favoured Hoops. He looked bright and eager against Ross County, and certainly had many of us wondering if we have nurtured a gem.

The most important thing about tonight of course is three points. In any league match, those three points are paramount. Formations and performances and even returning players are only filling the minor places. Get this one out of the way and look forward to a difficult Scottish Cup-tie at the weekend. And who knows, maybe even some new signings, seeing as it’s January.

Maybe someone should send Michael Nicholson a new diary to remind him.

Johnston’s crossing is appalling tonight. Just skying them into the air.

Hope the board are watching. Try investing instead of getting rid of players. 3-0 to the Huns was a warning they didn’t take. No blame to the players. You just can’t keep playing 3 games a week.

BMCUWP,

Fouling Celtic players is a given up here with no sanctions.

Should have had the game wrapped up early doors.

3:3 game over. I have asked this question before why do we wait for the 60th minute to take off players who are underachieving.

One exception was at Hampden with Trusty aff.

Hard fought draw. Congratulations to Dundee for a magnificent performance particularly in the second half, and commiserations on not taking all three points. I think they deserved them.

We are an orchestra without a conductor. No composure and no direction in this team.
Dundee have been good I have to say. Tony Docherty is a good coach. Wouldn’t mind him in our dug oot.
Im glad we escaped with a point after watching that.

Dearie me what a conundrum for Brendan. Who to partner CCV with, does he use Liam and risk his ‘ heid up his arse moments’ or stick with Trusty who is as reliable as a rag doll and has been, rag dolled that is, for most of the game.🤔Personally i prefer Scale’s blunders to Auston’s. Can we please sign a new left sided CB FFS

PS Well played Dundee and Tony Docherty, shows what can happen if you are well organised and are willing to ‘have a go’

Sol Kitts
January 14, 2025 9:56 pm

That’s what happens when you play a left back who’s never in the left back position.
We threw 2 points away tonight.

How does a team with 20% possession have almost the same number of attempts and shots on goal?

Liverpool have 70% possession and 4 times as many shots as Forest. Dont always go in, but if you dont shoot, they definitely dont.

We never took our chances in the first half. Our defense was poor at all 3 Dundee goals. CCV a bit unlucky with deflection for og. Think we need to give Dundee some credit though. They pressed us where they knew they could hurt us. After 3 games in 6 days its another point in the bag. Could have been better but could also have been worse.

Well, that was great viewing, “for the nuetral”. That’s what happens when you miss your chances and the other team are willing to have a go. We couldn’t have complained if Dundee had won tonight.
Who thinks the sheep will get a result tomorrow night? Asking for a friend!!

Good game. Credit to Dundee for getting themselves into a game that looked gone to them, even at 0-1

That ended up a lot harder than it should have been. I’d be coaching the players to shoot more.

Well done Dundee! They were outclassed in the first 30 minutes but hung in. This is a wee problem that we have. When dominating and ahead, we seem not to be able to finish teams off.

The break for the Dundee first goal was a thing of beauty. Several Celtic players could have stopped it before it got going but failed.

Dundee decided their chance was to have the game played their way…which was constantly to have the ball in the air. The Celtic defence does not like high balls played behind it. Especially with the opposition charging at it. Trusty hated it; Taylor, if he was there, did not like it. In fact none of the back four handled it well. Dundee usually won the second ball.

All of the Dundee team earned their corn tonight. Well done Tony Docherty! It was a good competition with the correct result.

Totally agree Bada. Manager said before the game leave if you don’t want to be here. Taylor won’t sign but still plays. How many CB’s are we going to buy/try? They need to be big beasts for this league or they will be rag dolled like Trusty was tonight. I take it we are going to have to suffer Young Boys bingo from the board before they think about investing. Not fair on existing players or the fans but it’s the same every year.

I suppose if you’re going to win 13 titles out of 14 – and we are – then its not a bad thing to have the odd game that may not go exactly to plan. It keeps the blood circulating.

The 5 subs appear to have disrupted us. Kyogo had a great first 45 but when he moved infield he disappeared from view.

BR has some big decisions to make before the YB game.

Margaret McGill

Pitymevin
absolutely!
Im trying to say that one of the prerequisites of buying a professional fitba player is that they can play fitba. In retrospect it seems to me that we have followed the Huns into the buyers market in the same way as we always do. OF r us.

Not easy winning every single time you take to the pitch.

Also been a tough winter schedule.

Up the Celts!

I think the YB game is going to be one of the biggest games in our history since Basel (?) eliminated us in 2002 from the CL. Just my opinion
