The Yellow Peril

Morning,all.

My oh my, we don’t make things easy for ourselves,do we? Up against the team with the worst record in this season’s group stage-the all time record is still safe at Ibrox-we huffed and puffed and nearly buggered it up.

I haven’t been so relieved since I got the all-clear from the clinic! (Ricki Fulton joke, in case yer wondering.)

It could all have been so different too. Apart from the four needlessly dropped points in our previous two games which would have put us on Easy Street, we grabbed this game by the scruff of the neck at the first opportunity. And speaking of opportunities, Kyogo took three of them in the first half-only to see them all chalked off! I can’t recall a Celtic player scoring a first half hat trick in Europe-maybe in the old days when we would be drawn against the likes of Kokkola-but I certainly can’t recall anyone having three chalked off.

Add to that a penalty miss just before half time by the normally reliable Engels-6/6 coming into this game-and nerves were starting to become frayed. What is worse is that our second half performance was nowhere near as good as the first 45, and frayed soon became shredded. We were still probing, still looking to hit the early ball, still keen on a shot from distance, but what was working like clockwork earlier suddenly jammed up.

Indeed,Schmeichel repaid the value of his new contract-PAID IN FULL-with a wonderful double save about halfway through the second period plus another vital save right on the final whistle, otherwise there is little doubt to this watcher that we would have been FUBAR’d.

It wasn’t that the players stopped performing after half time, nor that heads went down. It’s difficult to say what happened. Certainly YB upped their performance, but probably because ours had dipped so much. The passes weren’t meeting their targets. The tackles weren’t being won. The dominance had evaporated, to be replaced by apprehension. That déjà vu feeling all over again, so to speak.

That dreaded knot in the stomach as you realise it just isn’t to be your night, even as the wee Angel on your other shoulder is telling you to have faith, that we are Celtic and winning the hard way is what we do.

Well, winning the hard way from the most unforeseen circumstances is what we did. With five minutes to go,I was praying for about the same again in added time. Any port in a storm. Idah, not long on as a sub for the oh-so-unfortunate Kyogo, ran onto another excellent pass from Hatate, beat the defender for pace only to see the outstretched foot of the keeper knock it clear. And straight into the path of another defender who could only watch in horror as it rebounded off him into the net!

I’ve always said I’ll take a last minute own goal offside penalty if that is what is needed to win a match. This was as close as you can get! The weird thing is that the goal wasn’t greeted with a noise loud enough to blow the bloody roof off, it was as though we all just let out a collective sigh of relief!!! Or maybe that was just me…

Just to really show that we don’t believe in making life easy for ourselves, Maeda got himself sent off for a kick at an opponent in the last minute-and wouldn’t you know it, I got my wish for the five minutes of added time! Oh, we were really being put through the wringer here, huh?

I don’t know about you folks, but I could do without playing teams in yellow and black any time soon. That’s Dortmund who gave us a thorough kicking that could have destroyed our confidence, and now YB who damn near derailed our season. But the important thing is that we didn’t fail. We got the three points. We got the place in the last 16, barring some unknown mathematical formula.

And as an added bonus, I’ve still got one or two blood pressure tablets and a couple of fingernails left. I reckon I might need them for next week.

Massive result in our history.

A big chance is presenting itself here.

Are we going to be brave enough to take the next step and establish ourselves in the champions league?

Pivotal time coming up!

£10m players instead of £2m players?

Makes perfect sense to me.

A good summary Bobby. And I can reassure you that we have DEFINITELY made the last 24. Even if we lose to Villa I think we are likely to finish 21st. But for the dreamers out there, Beat Villa and we could end up around 13th. Arithmetically we could end up 8th but that would involve so many last round shocks that it’s never going to happen.
Sleep well everybody and I look forward to hearing from every one of you before 9pm on Thursday – SENCELPOTY@GMAIL.COM

What a joyride tonight Bobby!

Is there anything that didn’t happen tonight??

Think we just about had everything.

From blistering first half,,to football not worth remembering.

We kept the faith a bit more tonight too.

Bad
£11/9million on players so far.
Have they lived up to their price tag?…NO.
Has a £1million player exceeded expectations?
Let’s not go down the road like the auld team from the south side!

Was going to nominate Calmac for the MOTM, however my vote will be going to wee Kyogo due to the speculation that he’s away soon.

Unplayable in that first half, could have scored a hat-trick which would have been fitting, and deserved.

Brendan and the board may feel it’s the next logical step.

If we can do it, I’m all for trying to get even better players.

We’ve already found some great young players recently.

Pitymevin
January 23, 2025 12:32 am

From.the last

Charmersbhoy, you are correct. That’s exactly what I’m saying.

Daizen is an out and out CF, and this is why he can’t cross a ball.

Kyogo has been taught from the very best in his Spanish mentor Iniesta, the problem we have is, we don’t have an Andre’s Iniesta to play him the ball.

I’m not getting calling out anyone, we’ll apart from greedy GT. I’m suggesting solutions, if Kyogo goes, then what type of team I would want.

We will need to move on, and this is only a suggestion.

I’m a jota fan bhoy and think he really could make a difference with KT behind him.

Excuse the public service message but someone has to tell Celtic TV that CL games are not broadcast live with video…only audio is available. Therefore, commentators have to describe what is happening rather than chat between themselves. The amount of dead air was unacceptable. Very poor coverage. CelticTV shape up!

I agree but as captain he disappeared in the 2nd half like the rest of the team.
Question is.
What happened?
Tactics?
Complacency?
Maybe both?

Chalmersbhoy
January 23, 2025 12:45 am

Pitymeven
Better players?
The 2 most expensive players we have signed so far would be fortunate to get a 5 out of 10,for the season to date, to me that’s a very poor showing for almost £20million spent.
You?
£10 million players? Whom do you propose that would improve our team?

Bada Bing
January 23, 2025 12:48 am

Chalmersbhoy- you can’t dominate for 90 minutes at this level, yet again we should have buried a team in the first half, when it doesn’t happen, it’s bound to have an effect, we earned our wee bit of luck tonight HH

Pitymevin
January 23, 2025 12:57 am

Chalmersbhoy, I would suggest two players we sold for £25 million and not the £10million unknown, untried, untested under the pressure of the celtic jersey.

KT & FJ all in for the money we get for Kyogo.

No brainer.

Can we afford the wage? you bet we can, do we want to? That’s a different question.

So let’s just have the best bank balance in Scotland and see how it goes then, because its all about how much we have, its about what we could achieve.

Chalmersbhoy
January 23, 2025 1:01 am

Only my opinion now…
We require a left back.
A solid big bassa like wanyama as a holding mid.
A better left side centre half.

Another bugbear is why don’t we have a player who can actually take a man on rather than pass back?
Probably played more sideways/back passes than forward passes these last few games !
Will try to find the data on this.
Bada,
When did i mention we have to dominate for 90 mins In Europe or anywhere else?

Pitymevin
January 23, 2025 1:08 am

OK all, let’s ask ourselves the true question.

If its only Scotland and Europe will never be achieved. What’s the point?

Did big Jock think the same ?
Don’t tell me that they where different times, Real where the power house and the majority of great scottish players went to England.

But sometimes, just sometimes, a little bit of ambition goes further than anyone could ever imagine.

£70 million in the bank, as someone said , only a couple of the jigsaw pieces to put in place.

Let’s dream, or at least demand the very best we can except and not accept second best.

Yes it was different times as football wasn’t corrupted as nowadays.
All to do with the top euro leagues now, money, money.
Uefa were corrupt then but even more so now.

But I will still say the Lisbon Lions would still prevail as they loved the club more than the money.

The wee man is a modern, Celtic legend, and that’s probably the last time that he’ll play for the club.

Was the Jersey to heavy or their wallets will be?
In my honest opinion football for the working man is fuchd not just here but world wide.
£60 a ticket tonight for a non season book holder for a restricted view!
Yes the jersey is heavy, unlike mine and others wallets!

January 23, 2025 2:08 am

Chalmersbhoy, no argument here, especially when Uefa only dictates away ticket prices.

The games rigged, of that we can agree on.

Morning troops, about to head out on a hike, so will catch up later on comments.

However, a few points. There were moments of brilliance throughout that game last night, most went unrewarded, the moves for the “goals”, Daizen taking the ball out of the sky on the turn , Reos pass for the winning goal.

That we didn’t play at that high level for 90mins is forgiven, we won, we progressed, job done. Also, their GK had the game of his life. That was a 3-1 game if ever I saw one.

Strachan Lenny and now Brendan have qualified from CL groups.
They coincided with having our 3 best keepers of the CL era, Boruc Forster and Schmeichel.
I have long held the belief that at CL level the goalkeeper is singularly the most imprtant player in the team. Last night vindicated that view.

I thought both Reo and Callum had their best games of the season last night. The work both put in was unreal. Every game I read how poor both were but for some reason very few have mentioned how good they were last night. One piece of brilliant thinking from Reo after Maedas red was the icing on the cake for me. Under pressure in added time and surrounded by 3 YB players he notices the left side empty. Hits a 60 yard cross field ball up the park and out of play taking the pressure off our defence and moving the game into their half. Thats what people who read the game do when needed not hit the ball 5 yards to each other like a hot potato. Imo last night was up there with our RBL game and our slaughtering of Aberdeen in league cup. Could have been 5 or 6 -1 scoreline with a bit of luck and nobody would care about the odd stray pass but it wasnt not because of poor passes but because of technology in the game now. I cant remember a Celtic sttiker having 3 goals disallowed in any game never mind in Europe but its not to say it hasnt happened. Maybe BP could enlighten us on that one. We have made our objective of next stage. We are unbeaten in Europe after Dortmund. We are 13 clear in league. We have a cup in the cabinet.
We still aint happy. Wow.

HH to all celts on this wonderful day.
The weather may be shite, but our spirits remains so high.
Just getting back to base after such an emotional roller coaster last night.

Well done Bobby in trying to make sense of such a game.
A match of so many great moments within the first half, but yet again the final and most important part, of actually scoring seemed like it was going to elude us yet again.
Was increasing even moreso with the moments of great football disappearing rapidly within us?

But a Rodgers team does rely upon moments also.
And 2 moments of top class quality that finally went our way, proved to be so decisive?
The double save from kasper, and the defense splitting pass, can be added to our European nights special moments list imo?

Now qualification has been secured, then attention will turn towards the transfer window now.
Was surprised to see Tierney was included in the arsenal CL squad, but expecting that deal to be concluded later next week.
Was very surprised with the kyogo and jota news, and to be honest totally dismissed it as nonsense.
However upon reflection, I can see how such a deal could be beneficial for ourselves, but still would be very disappointed to see kyogo leave all the same.

That would possibly allow ourselves one more change to our CL squad.
Personally hope it’s another midfield option, especially as Rodgers is still reluctant to use McCowan within these big games for ourselves, especially in CL.
So still restricted for options in midfield, even moreso if any injuries should occur?
So a proper defensive midfielder would be my preferred choice, added to our midfield areas?

Great first half performance last night. Thought Callum and Reo had fire in their bellies which had been missing for a while.
The second half slump still concerning. Heads still seem to go down the longer the score remains even.
Thank the lord for Reo’s foresight to see that pass to Adam Idah and not to mention our super keeper Kasper.
Disappointed to hear stories of Kyogo possible move. Madness in my eyes but nothing surprises me these days with our board.
I mentioned how subdued he was when he scored a brace against Ross County and that he was maybe for the off. Nearly got my face chewed off for suggesting such a thing. I realise getting a fair price for 30 year old might make some kind of sense but do we have a like for like replacement talisman who’ll step in and become an instant hit?

January 23, 2025 12:22 pm

Fantastic achievement but it doesn’t disguise what is required to improve at this level.

We continue to lack combativeness in physical battles( AJ and CCV aside), and are easily pushed aside, leading to petty kick outs, more out of frustration than maliciousness, Daizen’s stupidity a prime example.
We lack composure, and need to be more clinical.

Get some strength and leadership into the team.
KT at left back can provide steel and guidance/ influence to supplement Calmac. Another with Captain credentials. So a new left back of his undoubted quality helps.

A new creative mid to replace Reo’s inconsistency. More composure and skill mid to front needed. He is rumoured to be wanting away, anyway.
A new tough, no pushover, experienced mid to take the burden off Calmac. We should have a full complement of six.

A new CF. We have had the best of Kyogo but he could still command a good fee if rumours are to believed.
Bring back Jota in the Summer.

Have we achieved our ceiling for this season? Last 24 is a great achievement for a team ranked at the bottom of Pot 3.

The likely end of the road this season, but a major building block for next.
