The Yellow Peril
Morning,all.
My oh my, we don’t make things easy for ourselves,do we? Up against the team with the worst record in this season’s group stage-the all time record is still safe at Ibrox-we huffed and puffed and nearly buggered it up.
I haven’t been so relieved since I got the all-clear from the clinic! (Ricki Fulton joke, in case yer wondering.)
It could all have been so different too. Apart from the four needlessly dropped points in our previous two games which would have put us on Easy Street, we grabbed this game by the scruff of the neck at the first opportunity. And speaking of opportunities, Kyogo took three of them in the first half-only to see them all chalked off! I can’t recall a Celtic player scoring a first half hat trick in Europe-maybe in the old days when we would be drawn against the likes of Kokkola-but I certainly can’t recall anyone having three chalked off.
Add to that a penalty miss just before half time by the normally reliable Engels-6/6 coming into this game-and nerves were starting to become frayed. What is worse is that our second half performance was nowhere near as good as the first 45, and frayed soon became shredded. We were still probing, still looking to hit the early ball, still keen on a shot from distance, but what was working like clockwork earlier suddenly jammed up.
Indeed,Schmeichel repaid the value of his new contract-PAID IN FULL-with a wonderful double save about halfway through the second period plus another vital save right on the final whistle, otherwise there is little doubt to this watcher that we would have been FUBAR’d.
It wasn’t that the players stopped performing after half time, nor that heads went down. It’s difficult to say what happened. Certainly YB upped their performance, but probably because ours had dipped so much. The passes weren’t meeting their targets. The tackles weren’t being won. The dominance had evaporated, to be replaced by apprehension. That déjà vu feeling all over again, so to speak.
That dreaded knot in the stomach as you realise it just isn’t to be your night, even as the wee Angel on your other shoulder is telling you to have faith, that we are Celtic and winning the hard way is what we do.
Well, winning the hard way from the most unforeseen circumstances is what we did. With five minutes to go,I was praying for about the same again in added time. Any port in a storm. Idah, not long on as a sub for the oh-so-unfortunate Kyogo, ran onto another excellent pass from Hatate, beat the defender for pace only to see the outstretched foot of the keeper knock it clear. And straight into the path of another defender who could only watch in horror as it rebounded off him into the net!
I’ve always said I’ll take a last minute own goal offside penalty if that is what is needed to win a match. This was as close as you can get! The weird thing is that the goal wasn’t greeted with a noise loud enough to blow the bloody roof off, it was as though we all just let out a collective sigh of relief!!! Or maybe that was just me…
Just to really show that we don’t believe in making life easy for ourselves, Maeda got himself sent off for a kick at an opponent in the last minute-and wouldn’t you know it, I got my wish for the five minutes of added time! Oh, we were really being put through the wringer here, huh?
I don’t know about you folks, but I could do without playing teams in yellow and black any time soon. That’s Dortmund who gave us a thorough kicking that could have destroyed our confidence, and now YB who damn near derailed our season. But the important thing is that we didn’t fail. We got the three points. We got the place in the last 16, barring some unknown mathematical formula.
And as an added bonus, I’ve still got one or two blood pressure tablets and a couple of fingernails left. I reckon I might need them for next week.

Last night walking up to the game the police presence for the Young Bhoys fans walking up before the game was unreal.
Counted over 40 police vans, hundreds and hundreds of officers.
The actual fans were very quiet and not a “ YodalYheehoo” in sight 😂😂😂
Online reports stating that Kyogo is keen to leave the SPFL for a top 5 Euro league club in order to secure a place in Japan’s WC squad where he has been a bit of a peripheral figure despite his goal scoring exploits for the Celts. Could it be that Kyogo and his advisors are the party looking to initiate a move rather than Celtic🤔
Also seems we may be interested in signing Mathias Kvistgaarden from Brondby after failing to sign him last season. A fee of £8 Mill being mentioned, apparently other clubs also interested.
Selling Kyogo only makes sense if we replace him with someone better.
Westcraigs
Totally agree. Selling Kyogo will be madness if he isn’t replaced. Leave in the summer if he is looking to move but for pity sake don’t push this man out of the club.
Highlights of last nights game

No offence intended, obviously. But thanks for pointing it out,it honestly hadn’t occurred to me.
And I sincerely apologise to lovers of shark-infested custard as well. (I’ve still got some crackers left over from Christmas…)
Embdae know Ryanair policy on a cancelled flight due to bad weather
Kyogo away,gutted
£10 million for a 30 year old,a business decision rather than a football one
Will Kyogo’s sale be a false economy? Kyogo plays the modern game… needed to compete against top euro teams (which YB were not).
the prize money for next CL game is 10 million, winner take all, while the winner of the QF gets a further 16 million
Bada…me and the wee fella went to Dublin a few months ago. The flight from Glasgow (£39 or £49 return each, if my memory serves) was delayed for 7 hours. The wee fella put a claim in and got £410 compensation within a few days. We were there for an overnighter, his Father’s Day present to me. The hotel was £100 so he made £200 off the delay!!
So, it looks like you’ll be covered! 🤞🙏
Moving to a team currently 14th in the French league will give him more of a chance of making Japan’s WC squad?
Mmm!
It looks to me like Kyogo is looking for the move, it’s now up to Celtic to maximise his value. Luckily, we’ve already qualified for the next stage but we’ll definitely need to secure another striker before the window closes.
We’ve a habit of hitting a good spell in the run up to season’s end, I hope this doesn’t come back to bite us on the arse…a Kyogo on fire would be some asset in any of the competitions we’re still involved in.
I’d love him to see out his career with Celtic but if he’s looking for a move…
St Tam’s will be happy, though! 😉
Celtic qualify.
Zombies go down to Manchester and get pumped
storm hits and destroys roads so zombies can never return to Scotland
if Carlsberg did Thursdays..,
About last night…wee Greg gives it away – moans and groans! Engels, Reo, Maeda, AJ all give it away – nothing!
You really are a bunch of hard-to-please feckers!!! 😉😁
The first half was as good as we have been all season! Kyogo was superb, beautifully composed, well struck goals, despite the subsequent offside decisions and earlier Calmac foul.
A different day would seen a different scoreline but delighted to have gotten the result and the points!
BAD
Its on record that the Japaneses national team manager does not rate Scottish football. Only Diazen is a regular starter in his squad irrespective of how Reo and Kyogo are playing in the SPFL.
Despite what coloured tinted glasses we may wear the French league is far superior to the SPFL.
A wee read back showed a lot of tension on the blog…I’ve got to say it wasn’t that evident, to me anyhoo, in the stadium. Of course, we’ve been sucker-punched too many times to take anything for granted, but I felt we only needed one chance. The ba’ from Reo, outstanding on the night, was absolutely sublime and showed how much value Brendan places on him. Idah’s determination and strength to position himself in front of the defender to attack was excellent striker play. The wee bit of luck for the deflected own goal was no more than we deserved on the night!
Bada
You can claim compensation if a flight is cancelled due to bad weather if it wasn’t deemed ‘exceptional’ and if air traffic control hasn’t imposed limitations on flights to and from a particular destination. Irrespective of being eligible for compensation you are entitled to a full refund or an offer of re-routing.
Absolutely terrific summary of an incredible night of drama Bobby!
I got home at 11.15 absolutely knackered. I watched the highlights with a wee dram and went to bed. I was too exhausted to log on here – which must be a first.
I’ve just completed the long read back. It’s quite incredible how different we all see the game. I thought both FBs were awful – constantly giving the ball away and in the case of GT giving teammates a hospital pass. Engels was no better and should have been off 20 minutes before he was hooked. I thought we were crying out for change in midfield after 60 minutes but BR kept his powder dry for another 10 minutes or so.
I thought he’d left it too late and I would have replaced Hatate for McCowan after 60 minutes.
So, BR either is a genius or just got lucky.
Going forward I hope we’ve heard the last about Idah costing £9.5m. I reckon between his winning SCF goal and last night the fee has been paid in full.
For those watching on TV can I ask what the atmosphere sounded like. It was so tense throughout the second half I’m not sure I remember much community singing.
I think most see the draws agasinst Zagreb and especially home to Brugges as dropped points. Had Celtic won those, they would almost certainly be top 8 and guaranteed a further 10 million at least. That 10 million Might have been the difference between Kyogo away or staying to the end of the season.
As someone said yesterday, if my auntie had wheels…
McCaff- Oglach,thanks
He was our poster bhoy, a lot of kids will be gutted, when Kenny left,I thought the World had ended, best striker since Larsson, his initial runs when we got possession as good as I’ve seen at Celtic
Bada I agree, as someone has said. We don’t need someone to fill Kyogo’s boots we need someone to fill his Cape.
Think AngusOg got cancelled not sure the reason why. Maybe it was because he liked to read a skud book. I remember the Ploughboy was his mag of choice
Selling Kyogo would be the height of stupidity, especially now. On form, he is absolutely lethal, and his 3 chalked off goals showed that. His sheer speed and movement is disruptive to even the best defences. Where on earth are we going to get a replacement in January even half as good?
INI IV I believe Kvistgaarden from Brondby will be coming in we’ve been chasing him for a while. I’ve no confirmation just my own belief.

Celtic v Raith Rovers
Saturday, February 8 with a 5.30pm kick-off on Premier Sports.
This is a repeat post from last night. Can anyone tell me if they have EVER seen an entire team cavalry charge breakout like this one by Feyenoord?
Absolutely electric! Imagine being a fan in the stadium watching this!
I wish we could do this in the SPL after opposition corners!

Sorry about that. That’s annoying that YouTube is not truly international. I’ll try to find another source.
I see that EBT Arteta gave KT 15 minutes last night. Does anyone know if that makes him cup tied in the CL knockouts?

With the news of kyogo possibly leaving ourselves today, then certainly raises the question, as to surely we must a deal in place to cover such a loss to ourselves?
Jota? Possibly, but would be surprised if it wasn’t a loan with a buy option attached to it?
Would be expecting Palma to be moving on, at some point also during this window.
So even including Jota, our forward options could be
Kuhn, Maeda, Idah, Yang, Forrest and Kenny.
Maybe good enough to see out an SPFL season, but wouldn’t be considered as showing much ambition towards CL still imo?
So getting in a kyogo replacement must surely be on the agenda, especially with Yang expected to be moved on during the summer also.
Still doesn’t sit particularly well with me, at the prospect of going to villa with both kyogo and Maeda missing either.
Complacency on show with a match against Dundee on Saturday?
Huge potential risks within letting kyogo go at this stage of the season, and hopefully the solutions are in place also, as nothing more than speculation exists at present.
The attacking options within our team, have to be nearly finalised during this window.
Especially with CL qualifying matches in July.
Also with some micky mouse tournament in the USA during the summer.
That CCV, Trusty and Johnston could all be involved within, means potentially 3 of our defensive set up, don’t get much, if any end of season break whatsoever?

Try this link. 30 second in, then 3 minutes 25 seconds in. Please let me know if it works. It’s CBS rather than a Spanish language channel. Unfortunately, the idiot editor does not show the cavalry charge from the beginning. The Spanish networks understand fitba far better than those of the mainstream US.

INI don’t think so, I think we can add 2 or 3 to the squad in the knock out stages, regardless if they played for other teams earlier.
Now (i think) as long as they’ve not played for 3 or more different teams.

That video is the same.

You are allowed to make 3 changes to your original 25man squad.
Doesn’t matter if you have played for another club within the same European competition.
So Tierney would be eligible after the final group game, when the changes can be actually made.
B list players can be added at any time, so Murray and Kenny could be considered for the squad for the Villa match, to the best of my understanding.
Selling Kyogo now , without having a ready made replacement, is borderline negligence.
Money talks , even when we’ve millions in the bank .
Last nights high now getting diluted.

Just reading back, and find that the video posted by Oglach is not available for viewing in the US of Drumpf. Annoying, and probably down to rights issues. For years now, most clips on the BBC online page and everything on iplayer can’t be viewed in an Apple device.
Pain in the arse.

Thank you, mate.

This notion that Kyogo wants/needs to leave to be in with a chance of playing for Japan. Where is it coming from?
Doesn’t CL level football provide enough of a test?
Are we being spun a line by the usual suspects?
Getting ready for an avalanche of fitba later.
I always wonder what underlies network choices for games.
CBS has opted for Porto – Olympiakos, followed by Lazio – Real Sociedad.
All of the Spanish channels, including Fubo, TUDN and UniMas have opted for
Hoffenheim vs Spurs followed by Man U vs Sevco. I think their infatuation with EPL teams stems from the relentless marketing by the EPL in US cities with large Hispanic populations.
Paramount is showing them all. Either pick 2, or watch goals from first 8, then second 8.
I’ll probably go with them. It’s screwing up my eyes trying to watch 2 screens at once.😵💫😵💫
Ernie
I’m wondering the same. I would have understood it better if he was 25 but he’s just turned 30! Realistically, his chances of further Japan caps must be pretty slim I would have thought?
If it comes to pass that Kyogo is leaving, it will take some of the gloss off the good result from last night. Speaking in personal terms.
I have suspected that something was brewing, judging by his demeanour during recent games. His goal celebrations were more muted.
I strongly suspect that this is his wish rather than the club capitalizing on the player. If it turns out otherwise, and especially if no replacement is signed, then it will give more credibility to the conspiracy theorists that the Board wishes to keep Scottish football as competitive as possible by scaling down the size of the gap between us and the others. Let’s see what happens in this window. Moving Maeda into the centre is not a long term solution.
I do not see midfield as a major priority for this window. Scoring is the priority. Perhaps that can be coupled with recruiting a wide player who can do that. Left back remains the other priority. Anyone else getting fed up with the constant non news articles on the Tierney saga?
If the Taylor situation is at an impasse, then it is time to shut the door on it and find an alternative because we need two LBs.
Now that the YB game is out the way, it is time to roll the incoming options.
Good luck, Kyogo. You shall be missed.

I’d file the Japan national team story under “Loadashite” as it doesn’t harm Maeda’s chances of being picked while with celtic
Ernie Lynch
Not buying that excuse either.
Can understand kyogo looking for that last big contract within his career.
Can also understand him wanting to try his hand at a higher quality league.
But above all else, think he would rather get back to enjoying his football again, as certainly hasn’t been shown to much enjoyment since the return of Rodgers imo?
Ernie
In 2023, Japanese coach was asked about the squad and why neither Kyogo or Hatate were included. His answer:
“I’ve watched all of Celtic’s games and seen what they’ve accomplished and their presence in the team,” Moriyasu said.
“But there’s no bar to clear to be called up, it’s a comprehensive decision. We think about the level of the league and various other factors when making the decision.”
Not simply the league, but it seems to have played a factor. And, really, how could it not?
Nowadays, football has changed and no longer is there an ‘italian style’ or south american style or German style … coaches and players move around more, so it is less about style and more about quality.
The SPL is such a poor quality league, it really doesnt help prepare players for what they face at the international level.
