The Yellow Peril
Morning,all.
My oh my, we don’t make things easy for ourselves,do we? Up against the team with the worst record in this season’s group stage-the all time record is still safe at Ibrox-we huffed and puffed and nearly buggered it up.
I haven’t been so relieved since I got the all-clear from the clinic! (Ricki Fulton joke, in case yer wondering.)
It could all have been so different too. Apart from the four needlessly dropped points in our previous two games which would have put us on Easy Street, we grabbed this game by the scruff of the neck at the first opportunity. And speaking of opportunities, Kyogo took three of them in the first half-only to see them all chalked off! I can’t recall a Celtic player scoring a first half hat trick in Europe-maybe in the old days when we would be drawn against the likes of Kokkola-but I certainly can’t recall anyone having three chalked off.
Add to that a penalty miss just before half time by the normally reliable Engels-6/6 coming into this game-and nerves were starting to become frayed. What is worse is that our second half performance was nowhere near as good as the first 45, and frayed soon became shredded. We were still probing, still looking to hit the early ball, still keen on a shot from distance, but what was working like clockwork earlier suddenly jammed up.
Indeed,Schmeichel repaid the value of his new contract-PAID IN FULL-with a wonderful double save about halfway through the second period plus another vital save right on the final whistle, otherwise there is little doubt to this watcher that we would have been FUBAR’d.
It wasn’t that the players stopped performing after half time, nor that heads went down. It’s difficult to say what happened. Certainly YB upped their performance, but probably because ours had dipped so much. The passes weren’t meeting their targets. The tackles weren’t being won. The dominance had evaporated, to be replaced by apprehension. That déjà vu feeling all over again, so to speak.
That dreaded knot in the stomach as you realise it just isn’t to be your night, even as the wee Angel on your other shoulder is telling you to have faith, that we are Celtic and winning the hard way is what we do.
Well, winning the hard way from the most unforeseen circumstances is what we did. With five minutes to go,I was praying for about the same again in added time. Any port in a storm. Idah, not long on as a sub for the oh-so-unfortunate Kyogo, ran onto another excellent pass from Hatate, beat the defender for pace only to see the outstretched foot of the keeper knock it clear. And straight into the path of another defender who could only watch in horror as it rebounded off him into the net!
I’ve always said I’ll take a last minute own goal offside penalty if that is what is needed to win a match. This was as close as you can get! The weird thing is that the goal wasn’t greeted with a noise loud enough to blow the bloody roof off, it was as though we all just let out a collective sigh of relief!!! Or maybe that was just me…
Just to really show that we don’t believe in making life easy for ourselves, Maeda got himself sent off for a kick at an opponent in the last minute-and wouldn’t you know it, I got my wish for the five minutes of added time! Oh, we were really being put through the wringer here, huh?
I don’t know about you folks, but I could do without playing teams in yellow and black any time soon. That’s Dortmund who gave us a thorough kicking that could have destroyed our confidence, and now YB who damn near derailed our season. But the important thing is that we didn’t fail. We got the three points. We got the place in the last 16, barring some unknown mathematical formula.
And as an added bonus, I’ve still got one or two blood pressure tablets and a couple of fingernails left. I reckon I might need them for next week.

This notion that Kyogo wants/needs to leave to be in with a chance of playing for Japan. Where is it coming from?
Doesn’t CL level football provide enough of a test?
Are we being spun a line by the usual suspects?
=====
A few online sites stating this as a reason. Started by Anthony Joseph on Sky sports this morning. Make of that what you will, i for one have little problem believing a player wishes to play in a far more technically / skillful league in order to enhance their opportunity to play in the national team. CL a handful of games a season as opposed to a full season in a competitive league🤔 I do not think Celtic instigated this, if indeed it is happening.
Just Sayin @ 12.22
Agree with most of that.
I would add that Trusty coped well with the physical battle last night.
Also if you look at our midfield, we really don’t have one physical player in there.
I would say that we need more than one.
McCaff
Kyogo never changed his agent in the summer for nothing.
I believe he has been instigating a move since then.
More skillful league fuxake Scotland has had more european club titles than the frogs.
Wee man is away 🙄

So you contend that Scotland’s domestic football league is as competitive and skillful as French football😏
Oglach Rennes are facing relegation this season, how the actual fekk can they be a better prospect than playing for Celtic, don’t care what the Japanese manager thinks.
Sitting in 14th place in an 18 team league with 17points from a possible 54 🙄
ASWGL
Not 100% sure but i don’t think there is a big point gap between the bottom and mid table clubs in the French league. Rennes may be relegated or may end the season much further up the table, who knows? What matters is that Kyogo would appear to be content enough to join them rather than stay at Celtic despite their current lowly league position.
ASWGL
since we are all ganging up on you… here goes…
France
European Cup – 1 winner, 6 runner up
Cup Winners Cup – 1 winner, 2 runners up
UEFa cup – 0 wins, 5 runners up
National Team
2 World Cup
2 European titles
2 FIFA confederation cups
Scotland
European cup – 1 winner, 1 runner up
CWC – 0 wins, 4 runner up
UEFA – 2 wins, 2 runners up
National team…
Oglach the top team is PSG on 46points, while Rennes have 17 points you couldn’t get a much bigger gap.
Thanks Mike I’m guessing you’re not my defence lawyer…The Prosecution rests m,lod 😜
ASWGL
I didnt recieve your monthly retainer cheque …. everyone else’s cheque arrived ….why do you think most of this shower arent behind bars!?
🙂
ASWGL
Point of order – i never mentioned the top of the French league i said i think that only a few points separates bottom and mid table clubs.
Leipzig and Frankfurt were our competitors for Kvistgaarden yet both have signed a forward to-day which may be good news for us, but the fee is likely to be higher than we paid for Engels (we’ll see)
Oglach & Mike you both win, I’ll plead diminished responsibility.

Rennes are indeed in deep trouble. Only goal difference is keeping them out of the relegation zone. Kyogo would also face far superior teams and players on a weekly basis.
As yesterday showed, a PSG team in full flow is an awesome sight. Lille have beaten Real Madrid at home and Atletico Madrid away, an incredible double feat. They were also very unlucky at Anfield. Brest are also going very strongly and have some wonderfully athletic players. They are 13th in the Champions League, yet sit 9th in Ligue 1, having lost 9 times.
I think Rennes may well be relegated. I wonder how the Japanese manager rates Ligue 2?

Yes, and Kinda sad to see Saint-Etienne sitting 3rd from bottom on French league 1, when you think of the masterful players they had years ago Johnny Rep Laurent Blanc Michel Platini and his successor one Lubo Moravcik
If we sell Kyogo we should have brought in a replacement before the sale. Every club in Europe will now know we are desperate to sign a striker and the fee will rise accordingly.
Westcraigs
does it not work the other way too? if we buy Kristgarder (sorry, spelling keeps messing up here) … before we sell Kyogo, is there not a risk that the buying club will realize we now have a surplus of strikrs, and have to sell, and then could drop the purchase price?
otherwise, everything has to be carefully co-ordinated … getting the old one out the back door while bringing the new one in through the front door ….
What we would be missing.

If you were arguing for the strenght of the SPFL, I think diminished capacity was already assumed
but to stop this sort of thing from happening again, you can get my banking details from Mahe and/or BMCUWP, and we can put you on the SC retainer/ monthly direct withdrawal plan ….you even get a group rate!
BOURNESOUPRECIPE has mentioned in his cameo appearances on here that he never promised us a Kvistgaarden, but it will be criminal negligence if we sell Kyogo and don’t have another striker signed on the dotted line.
And if we don’t, other teams will have us over a barrel just like Norwich.
I’ll stick with my original gut feeling, there’s something we’re not being told here.
Official story makes little to no sense.

Afternoon Tall Patrick, hope Wee Joan is doing well and you are spoiling her rotten

better watch out … the group retainer is just so I am available/on call … but if I have to actually perform services, that is on top of course …. and making you laugh, very few lawyers can do that, so that’s time and a half!
🙂
MIT you do know my better half works in the legal profession and she insists Mutatis Mutandis and the monthly direct debit has been setup 😜
IQ4,
Maybe accepted would be a better word, as official would suggest it was out in the open with Celtic making comment.
Last I looked he was moving cause he wants to have more chance of making Japan’s WC squad?? Well, that was the first thing I read.
I’m just not buying that!
Couldn’t find anything on the official RennesFC page, and felt encouraged, then I found this.
