The Crying Game

Morning,all.

I’m on review duties today instead of our usual MAHE Monday missive. And I have to say that despite a blistering start, that first half left me distinctly underwhelmed. It all started so well, a first minute goal with Maeda climbing to meet an excellent cross from Big T. And that was as good as it got for a while.

In fairness to our side, we weren’t getting any favours from the officials on or off the park. In fact,we had two goals ruled marginally offside in the second half, and I remain unconvinced on either. Or on the validity of the Well equaliser, come to that. But it doesn’t alter the fact that, after that quick opener, we really struggled to get much going in that first half.

To the extent in fact that Motherwell started to look more likely than us, and proved it midway through the first half with a dodgy equaliser. After some CalMac carelessness in midfield, the ball was swung over from the left, which CCV rose to clear. An obvious push in the back made sure that he missed it, and as the ball ricocheted around the goalmouth, Armstrong of Well, who had strongarmed CCV out of the way in the first place, score a debut equaliser for the home side.

This,I might add, is a guy on loan from Carlisle United. Literally the worst side in the EFL, bottom of Tier 4. Can’t get a game for them but scores against us, and was a handful throughout. Inexcusable.

We were struggling to do much, although we did create the occasional chance at the other end. And on the half hour mark, Idah struck to put us ahead. A wonderful ball from Maeda on the left, across the six yard box for Idah to give us the lead. It’s almost as though he feels liberated by knowing that he is the current first choice, instead of having to prove himself every week from the bench.

The second half was a vast improvement from us, and Motherwell barely got a look-in. Shortly after the restart, we had the ball in the net again, Kühn this time. Harshly ruled out by Beaton on VAR. Worse was to come later in the half when Idah had one chopped off in even more debatable circumstances. But even as we searched for that elusive third, I don’t think we were in danger of losing an equaliser. And when Jota arrived late on the scene, all hail the conquering hero, it was almost in the stars.

Scoring on his third debut, and right in front of our fans. In the last minute of added time too. An iconic image for sure as he raised his arm in salute to the fans, then ran back to restart the game while on the verge of tears. He has had a torrid time since he left us, and we can only hope that his cameo sub appearance and late goal are a sign of things to come.

We now move on to either Manic Monday or Groundhog Day. Time will tell. In my opinion, we have made a complete mess off this window in much the same way that we so nearly screwed up the summer one. We knew Kyogo was offski, and made no move to secure a replacement before selling him. We knew Taylor wasn’t for signing a new contract any time soon, and that Como were courting Barcelona’s Valle. And that these two factors seriously complicated issues at left back. We also knew that it was unlikely that Arteta would allow Tierney to leave last month-yet no immediate move was made for a left back.

Nor a hard and mobile defensive mid in the mould of Big Vic.

I dunno about you folks, but I’m fed up being told how well-run a club we are when we continually screw up on transfers. And when our No 1 target up front is a guy we first looked at 18 months ago-and were quoted €4m-whose value has apparently trebled, I’d say that there are certain people charged with bringing players to the club who should be nowhere near the role.

There will be more on this particular topic later in the week, but BR must be getting mightily miffed at it all. Or deja-vu all over again to the 2018/19 season. Yep, we won the treble that season. But we had to do it without our manager. Lessons need to be learned from this, lessons that should have been learned six years ago and plenty of times before that too.

It isn’t sabotage or anything like it. It isn’t trying to win a pissing competition either. It’s sheer incompetence and negligence. From people paid unimaginable sums of money to do one job. Time they started doing it.

A link to PLs role as Chairman.

https://www.celticfc.com/news/2022/december/02/celtic-announce-new-non-executive-chairman/

Note the difference in roles from an Executive Director and a non Exec.

Given the detail in FSR who thinks PL has the necessary experience to act in the same way as Chris McKay or Michael Nicholson.

Come to recruitment under the Executive at what point does PL overule them?

At the point of completion?

Hearing a rumour that Celtic have been Schlupped. What is one more schlup in a history of being shlupped?

May be we are bringing in the Norwegian winger instead of a striker. Move Maeda inside as the #2 striker. If Schlup is the new LB, he may not need Maeda’s support down that side.

May be I’ll live to be 150!

Inq,

Looks like Celtic have signed a left back AND a striker …. Accordingly to the Daily Record,

” Crucially, [Schlupp] can be deployed as a left-sided defender, central midfielder, left winger and even a STRIKER. However, having spent most of his career playing at left-back and out wide, Schlupp will primarily be brought to provide cover and competition for Greg Taylor.”

There… a striker, midfielder AND a striker … all in one…. and you were worried…

Interestingly in spite of the fans perception a goal scoring forward is needed Arsenal have given up in spite of their attractiveness as a big club.

If my memory is correct, the summer transfer window closes on August 29, which is about three weeks AFTER Celtic will have to play their CL qualifying games (Aug 5 and 12).

based on history, who would bet on Celtic doing business a month before the deadline? If that is true, that means going into the CL qualifier with one recognized striker in Idah

The buyer who wants to buy or the seller who wants to sell.

Brondby were the selling club, they were in control, not Celtic who are not exactly desperate for goal scorers to pay over the odds for one.

Thanks as always, mate. Looking at the goalsorers table,Idah is only one behind Kyogo. Didn’t quite see that coming, given their respective game time and reputation. Mind you,Idah’s last three have been from the type of cutback that Kyogo always thrived on but has rarely seen these last eighteen months or so.

Since I’m far from the only one that’s been pointing out that we should have been utilising this a helluva lot more, only to be told that it doesn’t fit “the system”,maybe it’s worth reconsidering?

Btw,and only to prove that we do read your match reports,Yang wasn’t on the field for the Idah goal. I think it was Taylor,Hatate and CalMac involved in the build-up.

There is a lot of ” we’ll sees” before then.

Perhaps with a healthy bank balance there is less risk on spending enough to qualify?

Failure would cost £20m including EL income so that amount at least would be added to the wage kitty.

The past was dictated by the consequences of failure, selling good players to balance the books.

That no longer applies thanks to current policies so why should history repeat itself?

Just to anger supporters?

You see it as backing the Board.

I see it as bringing a bit of balance to the thinking on recruitment it’s all a big bad Boards fault.

Nothing more nothing less.

We the support for all our complaints accept the status quo.

Now if someone would start a campaign that would bring about change I could respect that.

Mind you tried that myself and produced an evidence based case that the Board are not to be trusted and indeed lied to the support who did sfa to support change, quite the reverse.

So I understand the pointlessnes of expecting the support to take responsibility for how things are instead of blaming everyone but themselves.

If it’s that bad stop buying a pup before we even know it’s breed.

I think when the Board saw that Sevco, for the first time, exercised control and did not bring in any bling, they decided to hang Brendan out to dry. This is reminiscent of his first time around. At least 3 times in the past 2 weeks, he has been asked if Maeda will be played through the middle, and three times he has replied, “No, we need a replacement striker.”

How frigging clear can he be? How is he going to handle this?

I wish I was.

Res12 would have passed and the reforms it would have brought about would change the current landscape. No more lies for a start.

My background is an executive in government at a level where I came in touch with guys who understood how policy works, who has experience of strategy to deliver policy and how to implement it.

So for my sins I understand Board think.

That does NOT mean I support it.

That’s feckin nonsense given my record of Board exposure. I can understand Board think but at core I think The Board has lost sight of Celtic’s Christian roots.

I think Celtic have lost connection to the Chistian values which give us meaning as a club like no other, but see very little of those values reflected by The Board and on SC in respect of an unknown number of the support where charity begins at home and stays there.

A most unforgiving and so unchristlike characteristic.

So I reject judgements of my motivations. Just an excuse to avoid having to look inward.

Res12 was presented to the Board with evidence reform was required.

The Board in spite of having the evidence refused to act on it.

That is when they should have been brought to account.

As time passed the evidence grew and grew but the Board refused to come clean.

That is when CST and CSA should have taken up the case.

Not interested in fact hostile to the Res12 aim.

It wasn’t for lack of trying on my part either.

Not ONE GB banner in support, got more banners from Aberdeen supporters.

The Board lied all the way through and the only show in town to bring them to account was Res12 evidence the Board ignored.

So my view is I believe the support failed to use the opportunity to bring about much needed change at Board level.

Did you know Res12 shareholders pledged over £20k to take Celtic to court but CST turned the offer down on grounds that were disingenuous at best?

Yup. As the Res12 jocky I ran into hurdles that I never expected to encounter from our support. who did nothing but complain about the running of Celtic.

Auldheid
February 4, 2025 12:28 am

Mags.

There is that too.

You know and I know that Res12 challenged the idea Celtic were the good guys who merited the support that very belief made them attractive as opposed to the foe malign.

Turned out not to be true.

A truth folk prefer not to recognise as it is most unsettling.
