Put yer money where your mouth is Celtic!
We’ve been in this position before. Talented players making their mark domestically and on the continent, squad needing not broken up or pushed out the door but rather reinforced with more quality in key positions, a Celtic minded manager with a grit and determination towards making our beloved a genuine force against any club in any league.
We were handed the slow lane just over 20 years ago, it was a cruel and bitter blow to see the juggernaut sold for parts rather than refurbished to a better standard, but yet form then to now many building blocks have been laid, foundations that are supposed to keep Celtic from deliberately veering into the slow lane again.
It’s widely recognized the Seville team peaked that season, but this bunch haven’t. That squad hit its height, that group of players gave their all, but their value was decreasing, wage bill high, and the slow lane was to balance the books.
That process lead to this point, it took a while but football operations and the accounting department hit their jackpot this season. This campaign was very memorable, very significant, and very lucrative.
It’s widely said our manager never had equal/top talent to call up from the bench on Tuesday. Since Seville with players being younger in general plus the five subs rule, it’s a squad game more than ever.
And there’s no financial crisis looming with the highly paid first team about to hit mid 30’s and all leave for free.
Celtic are in a position of strength.
To enter the slow lane would be unforgivable, and inexplicable.
To continue to invest, which is paying off handsomely, would go a long way to show boardroom and supporter ambitions are aligned.
A long way towards trust and faith between both.
And not only that, our stock has never been higher meaning the odds of good investments just improved.
There wasn’t a single broadcaster, podcast, agent and player cum observer who wasn’t transfixed by events in Munich. Games like that can sway the public to have admiration, and a previously out of reach player to put pen to paper.
And there’s the elephant in the room, our managers short length of contract.
I imagine a spree of talented 22/23 year olds arriving would not only signify backing your man, but increase his desire to hang around and scale higher up the mountain.
Good players in their early 20s with talent and legs, exactly what our bench was missing in Munich.
The summer window and a contract extension will be inexplicably linked for better or worse.
Traditionally it’s at this point I would hope for the best and prepare for the worst, but on this occasion I’m not accepting that at all. Not while are in the rudest of health, not while squad improvement is easily affordable.
It’s said Ange exposed Celtic’s lack of ambition, well Brendan has certainly put those ambitions front and centre.
There’s no hiding place, no excuses can be made.
It’s literally time for a club ‘that aims’ to be world class in everything we do to put (some of) their money where their mouth is, because you were 3/4/5 signings away from shaking the entire footballing world just days ago.
This summer transfer window should be all about one thing and one thing only, Celtic flexing their muscle.
“We’ve got something special here” said the King of Kings, 20 odd years later of getting the books, signing philosophy, and hierarchy correct,, it’s ringing loud and true once again. We’ve no barriers, no accountants in the way.
Our glass ceiling was one blow away from shattering for good.
This summer must bring the final hammer, or else.

FCSB 2-0 over PAOK (4-1)
Roma 3-1 (4-2) over Porto.
Might draw Lazio next round.
Auldheid…your assertion that pitches used to be fully booked ar the weekends is probably true but only touches on the problem/issues. There used to be loads of local teams but now we have a SuperClubs, Giffnock Soccer Club and St Cadoc’s are up your way. These clubs are hoovering up boys as he only way they can sustain themselves is to have as many boys as possible paying monthly subs.
They have their own facilities and are able to buy kit in bulk at cheaper prices. I dunno why but they’re attractive to a lot of the kids/parents in your area and seem to be successful (in attracting numbers of kids if not on the park.)
I know St Cadocs had designs on being a Pathway Club with a ‘promote from within’ ethos and a desire to play in the Lowland League, to be honest I’m not sure if that ever got off the ground. As far as I know they do a lot of really good work in the Youth side of things, and their fundraisers are well supported.
These set-ups are a big draw for parents looking for reputable, financially healthy, safe places for their kids to play.
Betis 0 Gent 1. Rocket from English player Brown. Down 3-1 on agg.
Heidenheim hit Copenhagen post in last minute.
Bodo score to make it 2-1 and 3-3 on agg with Twente in last minute.
Unbelievable rocket wins it for Bodo. 2 stoppage time goals put out Twente 4-3.
NO! Dutch go up the field and make it 4-4 on agg.!
Unbelievable finish in Bodo game
Extra time in the frozen Arctic Circle.
All other games over, except in Heidenheim.
Johnny, Auldheid, Pitymevin etc et al…taking the Youth team out of Scotland has been tried. At the inception of the U20s Development Squads, after the abandonment of the Reserve League, it was tried. A mini version of the Champion’s League for Youth teams. For some reason it didn’t last long. It has resurrected with the current Champion’s League but Celtic and R2ngers have struggled because our whole set up for Youth fitba is shite.
We started building Centres of Excellence and appointed Youth Tsars, incidentally none of which lasted any length of time as they found there was no real support (financially or otherwise) once they were appointed!
The bottom line in Scotland is Youth fitba is a crock of shit. It needs a root and branch upheaval and we are years away from reaping any real, tangible benefits as it stands.
Comparisons with Ajax or anyone else are pointless as they have well established systems that have developed over decades.
Belgium had the same problems we currently have but they took the problem in hand knowing it would be s generation or more before they would experience any success but they got the bit between their teeth and went for it. Lo and behold they started producing quality Youth fitba players!
We need finance to get this done, but more importantly, we need bravery from decision makers.

I knew there was someone on SC whoknew more about grassroots problems from being involved as opposed to my observations and chats with SFSA Chairman.
You confirmed what was said in the Dec report I linked to esrlier.

There are 2 grandsons in the family 8 and11 that play for one of the clubs well supported by parents.
In fact their club won £1000 for strips etc after winning a competition for best well run clubs.
It is better than nothing I suppose but not the basis for long term planning.
Not a feature of Scottish football perhaps shorter longevity is a factor? 🙂
Cheatin’ Beaton the ref for the Apoel – Celje game.
Fenerbahçe score, 1-0 (4-0)
In earlier post about Dutch fitba’, I forgot all about Ajax ( at home vs USG and up 2-0 ). If Twente win through Norway, the Dutch may have 6 teams in the last 16s of the 3 Euro competitions.
Terrible Belgian defending.
Crowd trouble at Anderlecht v Fenerbahçe. Ref takes the players off the pitch, game suspended for 15 minutes.
Sociedad 1-0 over Midtjylland (3-1)
Even worse error.
Hope Mourinho draws Sevco.
They deserve each other.
Jagiellonia 1 TSC 0 (4-1)
Bodo winning 4-2 (5-4)
Copenhagen score. Up 3-1 and 4-3.
Bodo now winning 5-2 (6-4)
Molde 1-0 in Dublin.
Disastrous defending.
Catalogue of errors by Shamrocks.
Twente with 3 own goals in one game.
Sol
What about that Molde goal? Player offside barges into a defender which !eaves the keeper to flail about trying to clear the ball and it drops to a striker to burst the net??
If the offside player doesn’t get involved I reckon that ball gets cleared?
Should that not have been disallowed?

Didn’t we buy that admiral club in Austria for development purposes?
Yet currently we might have Anderson there, as possibly trying to get the back up role for Tierney next season?
Yet we already know Rodgers preferred choice would be keeping Taylor, and schulpp seems to be making an even better option for the position at present.
This without consideration for scales as another potential option?
So Anderson would have to become a huge surprise package to potentially even get into the contention bracket for the role next season imo.
So in turn questions is this admiral Austrian project, really worth anything whatsoever in potential development purposes?
By the looks of things currently, the potential youngsters we have had recently don’t seem to interested in it for development?
So the going around in circles remains in operation, without any real direction in sight at present.
Looking more likely that other SPFL teams will have to do development for ourselves, like a potential lennon Miller and then we might have to go calling, just to fill homegrown positions within our squad?
Very embarrassing way for the biggest and most successful club in Scottish history, having to potentially operate within the current structure in place?
Union St Gilloise brilliant header from Kevin McAlistair puts them 1-0 up at Ajax.
TSC 1-1 at Jagiellonia. Serbians down 4-2 to Poles.
Copenhagen win.
Bodo in last 16 and their season hasn’t started yet.
Huns will play either Bodø/Glimt or (likely) Fenerbahçe in the next round.
Sociedad 2 Midtjlland 0 (4-1)
Penalty to USG and Ajax player sent off for stopping a definite goal with his arm
USG score, 2-2.
Danes pull one back at Sociedad 1-2 from a penalty.
Goldson would never have been sent off for that.🤣
We have a game in Amsterdam.
36 goals so far.
Plzen 1 Ferencvaros 0 (1-1)
Ivanovic just misses for USG.
Johnno…I’m not sure if the deal with Admira Wacker is still ongoing. I’m sure we had a deal with a Mexican and an Australian club, too. To be honest I’ve never heard anything about any of our players going to any of them! I wonder why!
Maybe these clubs feel our boys aren’t good enough, or maybe too good!
Who knows, my focus has always been on the Youth structure here in Scotland.
Another point that always crops up and you’ve touched on it, too, is the necessity to have homegrown players filling our squad. I’m with you in that I don’t want McCowan on the bench in the Champion’s League, I want him on the pitch starting. I want our homegrown players to make up our starting 11 not supplement it by making up the numbers.
Plzen 2-0 over Robbie Keane’s Ferencvaros (2-1)
Plzen 3-0 over Ferencvaros.
Glorious strike by Midtjylland’s Osorio at Sociedad 2-2 (3-4)
Anderlecht equalize. Another gaffe in Istanbul.
The Special Wan no happy.
Danger keeper Lossl superb in the Basque country.
