Time for The Steelmen

Sunday’s fixture should be interesting. For starters Celtic will be quite jaded given the energy expended in Birmingham, plus we have selection issues. As such, it’s not a straightforward stroll in the park.

The departed/unavailable/injured list is piling up,,Scales, Forrest, Palma, Kyogo, CCV, Valle,,that’s most of a team with some issue or another.
We can also throw in tired mainstays like Adam, Reo, Callum, Taylor, Kuhn, Engels,,and there’s a good chance the tired Trusty will have a complete rookie in Dane Murray beside him.
It’s possible we will witness a second debut for Jota aka Boy Wonder, but Daizen is well rested and I don’t expect him to be benched for this affair.

Adam is a certainty as is Kasper, Daizen, Greg and Kuhn,,after that who knows. I’d like to see Luke and Bernardo drafted in, a Trusty/Murray combo at central defense doesn’t fully inspire me but needs must. Ideally Idah scores the goals to take the three points then Cummings gets more minutes.

As for our opponents, losing the manager is just another spanner in the works as we cannot possibly know what to expect. Caretaker managers are dangerous in that respect, regular formation and/or specific player responsibilities can easily be switched by the man without his head on the chopping block. I’m fine with that, adjusting on the day is part and parcel of football, as is stamping your own impression on the team.

Everything taken together makes the affair much more interesting than a normal February SPL away clash.
I miss the midweek games due to work, so this is my introduction to life after Kyogo, still cant believe hes gone. But I backed Adam as top scorer, I read he was very good in Brum, Im really looking for him to assume the mantle of our main man up front, so some more goals from the Corkman would be very welcome.

Even though it’s February the window is still open, I’ll access at the end, but looking at the last matchday squad and looking ahead to tomorrow’s, we clearly need players. The current squad has/had too many passengers, good job shifting some out and being cash positive, but it’s bringing them in that really counts.
I doubt Brendan would have sanctioned all the loans/departures unless he believes he will be replacing them with better players, his type of players, or he wouldn’t have left himself short, like Stephen Welsh on loan when we could have done with him, could do with him available tomorrow. Palma is another example, he’s better than nothing if you get my drift,,if he wasn’t getting replaced he would be kept for numbers alone and when we are already winning to rest legs.
A clear out in football (unless you’ve a massive squad/wagebill that needs trimming which we don’t) equals arrivals. With the group stages settled, with most teams starters/backups established, with money to spend and preparing to do, the time is nigh.

SAN LUIS
“However, we seem to allow teams (even Killie) pepper our goal with 20 odd shots per game, whilst registering half as much at times.”
———————————-
Hi San Luis
I was struck by this comment. For example, we allowed Sevco 24 attempts at goal the last game, including 6 from their 3rd choice right back!

I have said before that this is not sustainable. Let me give an example. Back on Jan 22, I watched an amazing Champions League game from Rotterdam between Feyenoord and Bayern Munich. It was a real statistical anomaly. Bayern were completely dominant, with 80% possession. They had 13 corners to 1, and 30 shots to 8.

6 Bayern shots were on target, with the Feyenoord keeper making 7 saves. Here’s where the anomaly is: Manuel Neuer had not one single save the entire game, yet Bayern lost 3-0 to the only 3 shots the Dutch had on target. The Dutch goals resulted from changes in possession deep in their own half, followed by lightning fast, long cavalry charges by all of their outfield players at the Bayern goal. It was amazing to watch.

But here’s the thing – how can we possibly sustain 30 attempts at our goal, at home as well as away? We are not capable of these lightning fast breaks. We have to remember that Bayern put nine by Zagreb, while we failed to score at all against the same depleted team.
I don’t know what Brendan is planning to do. We shipped 7 our last German trip, and Bayern lead Dortmund by 22 points. I really do not want to see Kane vs Scales or Coman vs Taylor.
That could fairly be described as unfair competition. We need to generate an Alamo atmosphere, and get some reinforcements in promptly!

IQ4,
“Hi MAHE:
Respectfully disagree with your second sentence there Chief.😊

Sevco will play against one of Anderlecht, Bodo, Fenerbache or Twente. I think they are well capable of beating any of them. They just ousted USG, who sit above Anderlecht in the Belgian league, and knocked out Fenerbache a couple of years ago. Their recent loss to PSV was their only loss to a Dutch team in European competition.

They finished 8th of 36, despite having 4 of the top 7 and 5 of the top 11 in their group. They also outscored every team with the exception of 3. They won comfortably in Sweden and France, drew in Greece, thumped FCSB, and made Spurs and Man U very uncomfortable.”
Very fair points.

I think we write them off at our peril. They have scored 3 goals against us 3 times in 4 games, and the last game was a rout, where they hit woodwork twice, and missed a 4 on one break. What have we done to ensure we avoid defeat when we next visit the Bigotdome, or get drawn there in the Cup? We have made ourselves weaker.
We should never underestimate the enemy, in this case the Foe Malign. Otherwise, it will come back and bite us in the ass. I fear our Board has just done so.”
It’s another each to their own argument as you may throw the OF stats at me whilst I throw potential treble and knockouts at you.

Sure, another team improved, but Celtic are improving by every metric bar bringing through youth.

As for actually lifting the EL trophy, I just don’t see it, the amount of strong squads that you encounter in the final stages etc. And it’s a one off.
If I said to you,,this team play Ajax for the Europa League Cup tomorrow would you put your mortgage on a Celtic win?
No. We are good, but not very good. And not a strong squad at all as recent benches show.

I don’t think we are good enough to win either, but that can be slowly changed if the will is there.

CCB

As I recall the debate started on being more ambitious.

I think the current level is realistic.

What swung things was my revealing my altruistic view on football and Celtic being a much greater force for good in society than it is. Quite the reverse imo and I would like to hear what is wrong in seeking that from a club founded on altruism.

I’ve yet to hear any argument Celtic should not take appropriate steps to become more altruistic to each other and all who support the club.

Any suggestions from anyone on how Celtic and support can get together in furtherance of that end or is it of no importance?

I think it is. I’d like to hear reasons why it isn’t that do not break the ethos that gave Celtic life.

I think Espanyol just showed us that nothing is impossible.

The 4th bottom team in La Liga just beat the top of the league full strength Galacticos 1-0.

Looks like Madrid’s midweek win in Brest took a lot out of them.

Here’s the stats: Madrid had 76% possession, 21 shots to 5, 7 on target to 2, and 8 corners to 1. The Espanyol keeper had 7 saves to 1. Possibly, the most significant stat is that Espanyol had 14 fouls to 3, yet escaped with only 2 yellow cards. That is an art.

Looks like many CL teams did not do too well today. Liverpool did fine because they played their B team at PSV.

San Luis,
“The midfield balance is often askew, the centre backs are suspect at times and our full backs can frustrate beyond belief.

Oh, and we’ve just sold our best forward.

Folk are right to be concerned if they see no money being spent by the board this eindow as every area needs improving.”

Yes they are indeed.

However,,,we’ve trimmed the squad, hit the yearly targets so far, have, upped the player acquisition quality since Jan24,,,I smell a cunning plan to make Celtic better continually.
You can’t say Brendan just wants to make money for Celtic, rather it’s in everyone’s best interests to keep the train on this track.
A couple of signings in the next two days, more in the summer, then qualification, better squad next year alongside the returning stars,,,I’d say Celtic are moving up not down and that’s always a positive.

Despite the lack of team balance especially midfield we have done well. With time they should get better. It’s good to have five good midfielders, but a proper holding midfielder and/or a creative is called for.
I’d love a Petrov in this team.

I think the point here is that we all deserve better players irrelevant of what competition we are in.

We have known for years we need a better LB and we could have probably got KT if we paid his wage For 6 months, a loan would probably cost us near a million anyway.

We sell our best striker and have not replaced him yet.

Our backup wingers are nowhere near the standards, so Jota is an improvement, but only at the cost of losing our best striker.

If we fail to get any new players in then we will be weaker than we entered the window. And with £100 million in the bank, that’s not anywhere near good enough.

Maybe thirty minutes in each of our next two games, plus a full game v Raith.

Could do with seeing more of Johnny Kenny too. But then, the more time Idah has as the main striker, the more familiar he will be with his colleagues.

Funny, because he spent decades sickening me every time he physically tried to end some football player’s career by badly injuring them, the fucking coward!

Bobby

We started the season thinking we had a decent squad in place with competition for starting positions.

As the season developed, the question of squad strength starting to arise, with to many underwhelming performances on offer.

Despite remaining in a strong position earned in the first half of the season, and expecting to kick on with a freshness added to the squad.

Yet here we are today, looking at a prospect today, of a 20man match day squad getting named today, that would surprise me, if the majority of our support would be happy with, to see out this season?

But that’s where we are at present, and a bad result today, the fuse will be lit with the level of anger imo?

Shocking that we find ourselves in such a position, and certainly didn’t see such a farce heading our way.

Hopefully Jota is able to produce the spark to lift the current gloom.
Still believe that we have plenty enough to get the right results today.
Would have concerns if we are forced into chasing the game, with possibly limited options for ourselves upon the bench to do so.

Think we have turned this game into a far bigger match, than it needed to be, with the amount of ongoing circumstances involved, along with a testing match at villa midweek.

Will take a victory today, without caring how it comes about.
Dread to think what any other result apart from a victory today will bring ourselves.

Sorry for not getting back to you yesterday, had other matters to deal with.

To answer your question, it amazes me, just how many transfer experts we have within our support, yet don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, with the level of secretaries involved?

But looking at the process involved, as I see it, is with the 3 wise men, to conduct what I originally thought was a straightforward transfer window.

Rodgers
Chief decision maker

Tisdale
Chief talent spotter

Nicholson
Chief negotiator

All 3 working together, to increase the power of strength we thought we were in.

Instead we get the 3 blind mice, with question marks against there names, with there involvement, and highly unlikely to get the answers to the questions arising.
All this without the name of lawwell still within the building, with a history of sabotage, especially when a transfer window is open.

So take your pick upon the biggest culprit, without really knowing what is going on behind the scenes?

With less than 2 days to resolve the current shitshow on view, with a tricky away game to deal with.
Then a very uncomfortable mix is in existence, that doesn’t sit well with me whatsoever at present.

Don’t believe such a farce should have came upon our club, with a fuse potentially waiting to be lit.
Plenty of very valid reasons as to why this farce exists, but without many solutions in sight, and an ongoing guessing game exists?

My own fear is that something far more sinister could be going and wasn’t expected, and wouldn’t be for the good of our club.

Hope I’m totally wrong, but less than 2 days to find answers to questions, isn’t a position that we should find ourselves currently in, no matter what.

Even if suitable solutions are found, it will still possibly leave a bad taste in our mouth, regarding the conduct of how something that was once regarded as straightforward forward, descended into such farce.

Spoilt for choice on where to place the blame at present, be possibly waiting the best part of never, in getting the actual truth imo
