Time for The Steelmen
Sunday’s fixture should be interesting. For starters Celtic will be quite jaded given the energy expended in Birmingham, plus we have selection issues. As such, it’s not a straightforward stroll in the park.
The departed/unavailable/injured list is piling up,,Scales, Forrest, Palma, Kyogo, CCV, Valle,,that’s most of a team with some issue or another.
We can also throw in tired mainstays like Adam, Reo, Callum, Taylor, Kuhn, Engels,,and there’s a good chance the tired Trusty will have a complete rookie in Dane Murray beside him.
It’s possible we will witness a second debut for Jota aka Boy Wonder, but Daizen is well rested and I don’t expect him to be benched for this affair.
Adam is a certainty as is Kasper, Daizen, Greg and Kuhn,,after that who knows. I’d like to see Luke and Bernardo drafted in, a Trusty/Murray combo at central defense doesn’t fully inspire me but needs must. Ideally Idah scores the goals to take the three points then Cummings gets more minutes.
As for our opponents, losing the manager is just another spanner in the works as we cannot possibly know what to expect. Caretaker managers are dangerous in that respect, regular formation and/or specific player responsibilities can easily be switched by the man without his head on the chopping block. I’m fine with that, adjusting on the day is part and parcel of football, as is stamping your own impression on the team.
Everything taken together makes the affair much more interesting than a normal February SPL away clash.
I miss the midweek games due to work, so this is my introduction to life after Kyogo, still cant believe hes gone. But I backed Adam as top scorer, I read he was very good in Brum, Im really looking for him to assume the mantle of our main man up front, so some more goals from the Corkman would be very welcome.
Even though it’s February the window is still open, I’ll access at the end, but looking at the last matchday squad and looking ahead to tomorrow’s, we clearly need players. The current squad has/had too many passengers, good job shifting some out and being cash positive, but it’s bringing them in that really counts.
I doubt Brendan would have sanctioned all the loans/departures unless he believes he will be replacing them with better players, his type of players, or he wouldn’t have left himself short, like Stephen Welsh on loan when we could have done with him, could do with him available tomorrow. Palma is another example, he’s better than nothing if you get my drift,,if he wasn’t getting replaced he would be kept for numbers alone and when we are already winning to rest legs.
A clear out in football (unless you’ve a massive squad/wagebill that needs trimming which we don’t) equals arrivals. With the group stages settled, with most teams starters/backups established, with money to spend and preparing to do, the time is nigh.

Btw in the song he talks about Richmond park in a Bridgeton summer – I’ll give you one guess what the name of the park across the street from me in Brigton is ….😉
I always like hearing things I haven’t before 👍
I was just going to say that Wolves had defending doggedly for 45 minutes, snd I wished we had done similarly last Wednesday, then Cunha has a brilliant breakaway!
Take that, Emery!
Villa stay 8th. Wolves leapfrog Leicester out of bottom 3. Villa haven’t won a single game right after a Champions League win.
Kilmarnock only 3 points from Top 6. We really don’t want to go to that pit post-split.
Sheep now an astonishing 25 points behind us, after playing 2 games more.

Just in from work so delay in replying
I quite simply disagree with you regarding when it comes to what European tournament should seek to play in each season and there is nothing you will write that will change my mind in believing that we should be seeking to play in (and do our best in) the Champions League as often as we can.
The Europa League seems an increasingly inferior relative to the big Cup- way behind where the old UEFA and Cup Winners Cup were in standing compared to the original Champions Cup until 1992 (at least). I do not think aiming to do a wee bit better in the Europa Cup than we are likely to achieve in the big Cup- say last 8 instead of last 16/24 would satisfy me or most other fans I know.
I won’t comment on most of the second half of your post as it is not as I see it a reply to my earlier post.
However, I must say your last question would not really need a reply had you not decided to include a pejorative adjective to describe ambitions. Wanting Celtic to play at the highest level available to it, giving me at least some real joy this season as it happened, does not strike me as mindless.
As always though keep on fighting the good fight

INIV, that’s a different thing altogether.
We are a selling club.
A club that needs to make profit every window
A club that pays fantastic bonuses to its board.
But most important, a club like no other. Well apart from just about every other club out there.
It’s not the club, it’s the supporters that make the club.
Football without fans is nothing, some genius said.
I just wish they would prove me wrong, just once. They can do it, they can spend just £20 more in one window. Not £20 million, just a score, that would do me.
The media seem confident Van Dijk will be signing a new contract at Liverpool, as he is out of contract in the summer.
But just in case he doesn’t, maybe he’d like another 2 or 3 years back in Paradise …
😊
When it was an announced Valle was going I was sure there’d be at least a loan deal done for a FB.
We can’t agree a deal with Greg but are going to heavily rely on him for 6months? That doesn’t strike me as the best idea I’ve ever heard.
And it ain’t filling me with the joys of Christmas.
C’mon Celts! Is this is us being the best we can be?
The team needs help now.
There’s clearly going to be arrivals based on the fact the club are actively trying to sign and have been rejected or seen the price hike up too much. On to the next names on the list.
And Brendan wouldn’t have let a load go at all if not getting replaced.
3 points and 3 players would be a rewarding couple of days.
I’m still hopeful

Stop being sensible Mahe! You’re ruining the vibe! 😂

I like what I’m seeing, the not good enough and not committed being moved on. That’s how you build a good squad, increase the quality waiting in the wings.
I can see Palma being our last real punt on a player, much better analysis being done.
A left back on loan makes a lot of sense.
Sentinel Celts referendum as a topic for discussion:
Old Firm EL equivalance to maintain status quo or CL aspiration as a means of achieving progression.
Discuss.

I for one see no convincing evidence we are trying to help/level out the Old Firm, if anything the evidence points to the opposite.

It’s not my hun equivalence or is my life affected by it.
. The nature of football is it requires a degree of competition and in Scotland that is Rangers.
Until you understand that underlying factor and how it effects thinking at Board level there is little point throwing ill informed judgements about my self at me.
There is life beyond everything we focus on.
Glad you had an enjoyable day.
I felt Auldheid meant we would still be in the same place regardless of buying/selling players. That’s more probable than not.
If we as a support want actual European silverware the EL is more likely so I can see the attraction.

Don’t understand Auldheid’s ‘better in EL than CL’ position. In ANY competition the highest level is the goal in competing and that’s without comparing even the individual game rewards available when comparing. Did he not work for HMRC? Little wonder he’s got back to front thinking😃. Kidding aside, on any comparison in competitive sport of all types, the last in the highest grade is invariably superior to the first in the grade below; except in the occasional one off.
celtic may not have won on Wednesday but I enjoyed everything about the game except the first 5 minutes as did all who were in the same bar as me in Birmingham.
What’s that phrase Auldheid?… Oh aye..KTF
Confident we will sign a left back and striker before the deadline 🤞 Fail to prepare 🤔
It’s an each to their own debate as far as I’m concerned.
Some would prefer the CL knockouts, some the later stages of the EL.
BUT,,
The EL of Seville days are gone, it’s a serious competition and quite frankly our team wouldn’t win it.
R2ngers will be lucky to see another win.
I suppose I’d like a mixture of both, but that means coming second which would be a collosal fuckup given our position of strength.
So just keep building, gaining experience, getting the yearly exposure needed to target better and better,,pot 3 to pot 2 etc.
It’s not an overnight journey, and Superleague might happen anyway which means we are a global force not just name with that new yearly broadcast income.
These are genuinely interesting times, we are watching a transition. One ten million player rather than 4 2.5’s? For years that was the wish, the call. It’s arrived.
For years we watched the best become a star and move on, now stars want to return as the grass wasn’t greener.
We make a real good fist of the group stages for three years in a row we raise the coefficient, and begrudgingly thanks to R2ngers in that respect. And we establish the name, from there it’s upwards. Less qualifiers, better players willing to join, might break the wage structure again, etc.
Football is such an instant rush and also a game of chess.
Funny old game indeed Jimmy.
Hail Hail from the much needed California rain.
In Auldheid’s thinking does that mean the Hun supporters were happy to win the Petrofac Cup?…..I mean it was a trophy, wasn’t it?
Understand Auldheids point. Our ambitions can be limitless however they may be different from the Manager & Board whose KPIs are all that matters and that then becomes our ceiling 🤔
Jimbo
I have no problem with realistic ambition.
I’d just like a clearer idea of what realistic ambition looks like and where we would find ourselves to the satisfaction of those who look to Celtic to satisfy our hunger to be happy.
Are you telling me Cetic v Seville in an EL final would not be a repeat of 2003?
A diet of relevant consistent success beats a diet of annual disappointment any day. Trouble is we have got to like it since nothing is done to change it.
The context of mindlessness was on the wider basis that of all the things that are important in life football is way down the list and football prevents thinking about what is important.
A diversion.
I am perfectly capable of separating one from the other yet seeing the good in both, although it’s harder to find joy when Celtic fail to please at transfer time.
Let’s say SC becomes a less enjoyable place to visit, especially if alternative perceptions of what really matters are tabled. It risks having to think.
Simple question, what difference is it really going to make to expected success if we go through the season with squad that we have now?
What is the fear that takes us out of our minds until the window closes?
Is it really real?
As a wee nun once told me it’s easier to wear slippers than carpet the world.
Just sayin’
I’m not getting in the middle of this debate. What I can say is that you are way off base with your last post, probably due to an inadvertent turn of phrase in a post.
Having the advantage of knowing Auldheid personally, I can tell you that a more honourable, moral or smarter guy you are unlikely to meet. He is, by a long way, neither needy nor obsessive, nor remotely strives to be relevant. He is also struggling with a severe health issue at the moment, so please bear that in mind.
I am a bad bastard, but I can recognize someone who is the opposite of me.

The supporters are all about greater expectations whilst our board are all about expectation management 🤔
“Simple question, what difference is it really going to make to expected success if we go through the season with squad what we have now?”
You’re correct Sir, I would expect the current players to do the remaing double and get pumped by Bayern, this window won’t make a tremendous impact on the current season.
This window does however provide the bedding in period so the squad can be op-TIM-ized for the qualifiers. It’s too big a gamble not to strengthen now, and I think we will with more come summer.
Hail Hail
Imagine a scenario when the Celtic manager stated at the start of every season that his ambition was to win the league and reach the CL last 8 🤔
Gordon64,
“The supporters are all about greater expectations whilst our board are all about expectation management 🤔”
I honestly cannot agree. We’ve hardly discussed the board this season, have achieved or are on track to achieve our seasons footballing aims, and the window is yet to be concluded.
I’m fine with all that’s unfolded so far, and a late flurry of activity doesn’t mean a bad flurry.
I’ve really enjoyed this season, and that’s what you want.
Hope you’re well Sir!

————————
Hi MAHE:
Respectfully disagree with your second sentence there Chief.😊
Sevco will play against one of Anderlecht, Bodo, Fenerbache or Twente. I think they are well capable of beating any of them. They just ousted USG, who sit above Anderlecht in the Belgian league, and knocked out Fenerbache a couple of years ago. Their recent loss to PSV was their only loss to a Dutch team in European competition.
They finished 8th of 36, despite having 4 of the top 7 and 5 of the top 11 in their group. They also outscored every team with the exception of 3. They won comfortably in Sweden and France, drew in Greece, thumped FCSB, and made Spurs and Man U very uncomfortable.
I think we write them off at our peril. They have scored 3 goals against us 3 times in 4 games, and the last game was a rout, where they hit woodwork twice, and missed a 4 on one break. What have we done to ensure we avoid defeat when we next visit the Bigotdome, or get drawn there in the Cup? We have made ourselves weaker.
We should never underestimate the enemy, in this case the Foe Malign. Otherwise, it will come back and bite us in the ass. I fear our Board has just done so.
Cheers,
HH

Mahe Agree mate the first third of the season (forgetting the demolition in Dortmund) 🙈 was amazing however performance levels have since dropped and as they say we are where we are. Hopefully we are far enough in front to win the league but I see little ambition by the board to improve the team especially if we have any hope of overcoming Bayern HH 🤔
Mahe
It’s been a funny old season this far.
A Cup win, progress in Europe and top of the League by some distance. The money is flowing in from all directions. Yet..
Unconvincing performances in many games, especially in opening 45 mins. Then we have had a couple of pumpings from Dortmund and then the Huns(albeit only 3 goals). However, we seem to allow teams (even Killie) pepper our goal with 20 odd shots per game, whilst registering half as much at times.
The midfield balance is often askew, the centre backs are suspect at times and our full backs can frustrate beyond belief.
Oh, and we’ve just sold our best forward.
Folk are right to be concerned if they see no money being spent by the board this eindow as every area needs improving.

Thanks for your considered reply.
Two points ( for my defence) – this may be a bit Spanish Inquisition but as Joey Ramone once sang Hey!Ho!
1) I have realistic ambition. It was articulated better earlier in the day- Celtic is like Scotland or the Republic of Ireland in the World Cup- qualify from the group stages then hope for the best. I think that given our financial status that is realistic- we have done it 4 times. If you disagree fine.
2) I am disappointed in this transfer window but have blamed nobody for the way it has turned out. The highly estimable Iniq the Fourteenth may disagree with me but he tells me latest scores of games of games I’m interested in but cannot be bothered watching so he’ll do!
3) [told you] Celtic (and indeed football) have given me immeasurable pleasue in life but two hellish matches played 25 days apart in the spring of 1970 have shaped me too. But none of it is much more than a hill o’ beans. Except maybe telling my mum, on her death bed, that Sammy had scored in the last minute in Moscow ( the first time) and see her smile for the last time.
Mon the Celts and Vive La Difference!

Im with you 💯
We seem to be conditioning ourselves not only in accepting below Celtic standard players (Taylor, Scales, etc) , but lowering our expectations in Europe too .
Im sure the Bodo Glimts and the Brests of the world don’t feel the same way as us.
And good on them too.
We showed glimpses of what we could do against Villa on Wednesday but for a few expected feck ups at the back. We are not that far away from being a competitive side if we’d just spend some decent dosh on decent defenders and a number 6.

In their position at the time any port in a storm.
However they were feckin delighted to invade Frankfurt for EL Final.
Suddenly from being a matter of pride in victory it becomes as an excuse for a bevvy.
Of course Tim’s would turn up for what could be another 2003.
Who then said ” I’m no gaun to Seville, it’s no Lisbon.
The stay aways would be outnumbered by families who would like a great day oot.
The EL has good quality teams in it and to dismiss it as poor fare fails to recognise those clubs who would offer Celtic competition.
On ambition show me what it would look like and cost of achieving it up each tier.
Then a more informed debate can take place.
If Celtic trusted the support to trust them in return then it would serve Celtic well to be transparent and publish figures.
Now there is a challenge, trusting each other.
Good or bad idea?

Don’t we all ?

The Treble is a realistic ambition this season but how many would swap it to beat Bayern and get into the CL last 16 🤔
Auldheid
Never a truer word!
Auldheid 1023pm:
The argument is surely about the level of competition you want to be in, not which one you think you could win! Celtic couldn’t win any of the three UEFA trophies at the moment because we don’t have enough really, really good players.
Look at Jobo’s table, some players hardly get a vot EVER!
The first objective is to win the league you compete in, although in the ‘bigger/better leagues finish in the first 4, to progress to the next level. Should you then say ‘Ach, we’ll get humped in there so let’s body swerve that for the lower ones. What’s the point in that? Better to have tried and failed than not tried at all.
Hope you’re still winning healthwise👍

Whilst I agree I would not dismiss IQ1V concerns re Rangers improvement.
They will not drop the same number of points away in next 3 months as last 3.
Celtic will need to be on their toes not to have a squeaky bum time for support in last 6 games.
As regards qualifying for CL next season we’ll see.
My view is that as soon as it looked like a 20pts plus gap going to Ibrox, Celtic took their foot off the gas to give illusion of a competitive SPFL.
Why spend more to win a prize more or less assured?
