Treble dreams
It’s funny how things workout sometimes, in life and in football. I’ll throw some examples out there.
Many of us would have wanted Sinisalo for the Cups,,Brendan didn’t agree and I understand opting for continuity but now the Cup change has been forced upon him.
Goals,,many of us feared a drop off after losing our number one striker but as it turns out but we’ve just scored 9 in two games, and with lower league opposition today there’s a proper chance of a another high scoring game,,,as soon as we get shot of Kyogo our goals per game average increases?
Greg being tempted by Zagreb,,who woulda thunk it? It’s not as if they were sitting around thinking we could really do with a Scottish left back, and the player himself will be exposed by a lack of height, technique, and pace in a nation that produces quality players, a highly scouted nation that produces so many players I’m wondering why recruit from outside? Still, I’m reminded of telling my dad I was moving to New Zealand and he replied there’s nothing out there, how wrong he was as I had the best year of my life showing one man’s spurred opportunity is another’s heaven. I hope he does go to be honest,,it’s a beautiful place and he will learn, and I personally like the idea of Schlupp and KT taking over the position. As Schlupp will be on a free, we’ve managed a try before you buy, if you wish. But his high wages will be an issue, we won’t have both left backs on top whack, or will we because he’s free? I’m hoping he puts the club into that position, starting properly from today.
Throw in Scales, Ralston, and Murray that’s a completely new back five! I’m not expecting that though, Trusty and Scales would get the nod, Murray given the entire second half if the games wrapped up please gaffer.
We need a good look at him, everyone wants a new youth product breaking through.
In the middle it would be normal gking on sensible to leave out some Bayern starters. But I get the feeling Engels is growing better, more accustomed with every passing minute, and I’ve seen dropping Reo have an effect before, yet the game is made for Luke. Callum will want to Captain the side in every round until hopefully lifting the actual Cup. Brendan doesn’t do himself favour’s with regard to budget when his try before you buy midfield signing Bernardo can’t nail down a first team place but look like a player who needs consistent gametime to progress. Its a tough one,,if I were King I would select Reo, Engels, Bernardo.
In attack everyone assumes Maeda starts on the left given the circumstances but I’m not convinced benching Jota or Kuhn for that matter benefits the player. Keeping those two on the pitch for a half also allows Kenny to start as there’s still goals in the attack. Idah doesn’t need to play the whole game, but I reckon if given minutes he will have a serious appetite to score more than Kyogo, hit 20 or so, just to make a statement he’s the top dog.
Lower league opposition in an early enough Cup tie equals something a bit different, a tinge of mystery, and of course the chance to impress not just the Parkhead faithful but the manager. One might opine a stern test before the sternest of tests is good preparation, but I’m in the take it easy camp. As long as they don’t go out to leave their mark on players, I’m happy with what should be another high scoring home win with all five subs used. Then it’s just a case of repeating it on Wednesday.

So if I made false accusations about you, you would be OK?
We all have egos and it would appear yours has been activated by my response and I see no point indulging in ego tennis to spare the blog from ego maniacs.

Just in case you got impression I was dismissing you when I said I would keep my response short was because I disagreed with you when I don’t, I meant to spare the blog from another long reply from me.
I’m aware I’m posting a lot.

“To those expecting change, what form do you expect it to take?”
I touched on this last night. There’s a raft of boardroom retirements due ergo a more modern type of thinking should permeate Parkhead, should being the key word.
On Desmond Junior Ill say this. Apparently his dads business is land and tech, Junior bought the Ireland wide franchise for a pretty decent burger chain, believe its doing well. He now knows there’s money in food. And people pay more and pay more willingly for a better end product.

Enjoyable game yesterday. I’m not a big fan of changes but it worked and well done everyone.
My 3 for Jobo,
Maeda
McCowan
and Yang. ( Give credit where it’s due )
Now to prepare for the big one on Wednesday.
Can’t wait !!!
HH 🍀🍀🍀.
Long time lurxer here long time lurxing, just want to send the best of wishes to the great old Auldheid there now there now.
All that battle against such a terrible illness, I hope you’re getting better now, day by day, between yourself and myself there now ?
You’ve been a fine auld chap down the years there now there now and I have no reason to believe far less follow up on all these internet rumours?
A man amongst legends you are there now, even if I say so myself?
#WeAllBelieveYouAuldheid
Looks like the team are really starting to motor at just the right time.
After so many changes I was pleasantly surprised at how good we were.
MOTM Brendan Rodgers.
I am agree.
I meant to say Agreed and that we all believe in you, Auldheid%
Not I am agree and we all believe you!
Sinisalo – Very little to do but done it well.
Tony tiger – Another solid performance.
Schlupp – Looked like he’d been there a while.
Murray – Very impressed with him.
Scales – Had a good game.
Calmac – Mr dependable. Came really close to another smashing goal from distance.
McCowan – Had his best game for the club.
Bernie – Was playing great before injury ended his night.
Kuhn – A threat every time he receives the ball.
Yang – Contributed much more than usual.
Maeda – Just wow!
He’s!
Always good is this BAD!
How I’m making Smiley face 😊
I have always believed that BR improves players. In his first stint the evidence was there with Calmac, Brown, Forrest, Tierney and Armstrong but I think the improvements he’s made to Maeda will be his greatest work. Honestly this guy was capable of hitting a satellite from the left wing a few months ago. Now we rarely see that. His crossing has improved immensely and his finishing is top drawer. Now I’m not saying he couldn’t finish before, he must have had something to play through the middle for Japan but he’s just so comfortable now. He’s not Kyogo and I dont want him to be but I always say if you listen to BR you will get better. We are lucky to have our manager. Let’s hope our failings in the transfer window have not cheesed him off like last time. Yes there have been times our football hasn’t been great this season but we won’t attract a better manager in my opinion. Right off out to walk the dog.
Auldheid,
From your question on Friday.
The 70% FSR won’t be a problem given the elevated income due to the CL.
Last 2 seasons, turnover = £119m/£124m.
Our wages across the group were up £4.7m (8%) from £60.9m to £65.6m, driven apparently by investment in the first team.
(A breakdown of that £65.6m figure would be interesting).
Whatever the first team squad wage figure actually is – don’t forget what can be offset. The development at Barrowfield for example.
There was a meeting in December in Dublin between Brendan, the CEO, CFO, Dermot and a few others. Surely the budget for January was discussed?
Why then the rancour when selling clubs demand fees/terms beyond the budget?
Is the transfer budget sufficient to achieve agreed objectives?
Brønby reportedly wanted £15m.
The issue seems to have been about the sell on percentage. If Brønby wanted 66% of the quantum (or even profit) that’s a bit of a game changer. If we had agreed it would of undermined our negotiating position in any future deal and the undermined club’s financial strategy.
We had apparently offered 33% of the profit on any future sale of the player.
We were linked with Kelechi Iheanacho. He’s a Leicester player and was on loan at Seville. He’s been there since June and has 0 league goals in 9 appearances. He’s scored a couple of goals in the cup. I think he’s been in 5 clubs in 10 years.
His salary is almost certainly between £100k/£150,000 per week. We apparently offered to cover £50,000. Middlesbrough offered to cover the whole salary and the player went there.
We share a common problem with Championship clubs – the EPL. Like us they struggle to compete with Premiership clubs .
Their academies are raided for talent by clubs from the richest league in world football.
Middlesbrough had turnover of £32.2m in 23/24. Wages accounted for £31.4m. At 97%, that’s an improvement on the recent numbers where wages accounted for well over 100% of turnover.
“Middlesbrough FC have released 2023/24 financials, revealing the club lost £12.4m pre-tax while finishing 8th in the EFL Championship. Owner and chairman Steve Gibson converted £149m of loans to shares, then provided a further £14m to club coffers.”
Middlesbrough have been given credit as one of the better run club in terms of finance, yet they are signing a player on loan for 100k per week having recorded a loss of £12.4m and just converted £149m of debt into equity?
There is an apparent gap in what our manager sees as value and what the executive are prepared to pay.
This will result in repeated frustration in future transfer windows, unless resolved.
There’s no point in scouting players that the manager is unlikely to want.
We are at a crossroads
– If we can turnover £124m last season with wages at £65.6m and still lose out to a club with a turnover of £32.2m and wages at £31.4m there is a problem.
Especially if the targeted player earns in excess of £100k per week.

Good morning, friends.

I hope 4 – 0 is a big enough lead to take to Germany.
ATOB
I always thought that Maeda , was an athlete, that coaches were trying to turn into a footballer.
Well it looks as if Brendan has succeeded in doing so.
Got to say that I considering the opposition, both Ralston and Scales were poor last night .
TGM,
So with the wages are closer to 50% rather than the 80% allowance this season.
Surely our wage structure is as well as everything else we do, underestimated or cheap.
In reality, our wage band should be closer to 90 million instead of the 70 we currently sit at, if we are bringing in the 120/30 million.
The only reason I say this is because, we all know that north of 20 million will buy a player from celtic. So expect players to leave irrelevant of CL qualification.
The difference is now, that when the negotiation start with buying clubs, we can stand firm with our high valuation.
( See Matt)
On the otherside of the coin, we must expect the same to happen when buying, and I’m not sure we have grasped that nettle yet.
You say we offered this and we offered that. But as Auldheid would say where is the proof?
We didn’t get either of the targets, that’s the facts!
What we did do is, send a message to our manager, that nothing has changed since your first spell.
And if ever there was a new board V manager spat, this is it.
We had PL’s kid going the journey and BR stating that the recruitment part of celtic was shambolic. Not a great endorsement.
The difference this time around is BR won’t leave before his contract expires. Even though Celtic held his contract the last time, and could have told Leicester to look elsewhere.
I honestly believe all parties were happy the last time BR left.
The board because they didn’t have to match BR’s ambition.
BR because he was getting another cracking at the EPL..
No looser apart from the supporters.
This time it is didifferent, is time round DD has had to recruit BR for a second time.
BR has delivered again.
BR has knowledge how other clubs operate and will undoubtedly have the ear of DD. Because of this time, DD has proof a scenario and hindsight is not required. Been there done it.
I watched the KT interview on the curry report and KT says that after Arsenal placed the bid, not one person at celtic spoke to him. This is a criminal way to treat a bhoy that had been at the clubs since 7 years of age.
KT might not have been angry, but I was raging at the thought of this. Not one person. As KT says ” I think it was best for everyone ” that is not the point and if being honest again, i think time is the healer.
We will see, we will see.
A complete new structure and clear out of the board is required. A transition period should be allowed. We need new blood and most importantly a new direction of travel for a club of our size.
If we had paid £10 million for Maeda as a replacement striker for Kyogo last month,6 goals in 3 games,we would be thinking wow….
Bada, if Ange hadn’t managed Daizen, we wouldn’t even know who he was.
Again not scouting! Just pure blind luck.
St Tams,
I think a lot of footballers are athletes first now. Ajer was the first I saw in that mould.
PMN,
You are in a rich vein of form just like Maeda!! Great post about the board. We really need new blood in there. We’ve said it before, stale, pale and mostly male. Even the relatively new blood are acolytes of the chairman. That model Will never make us world class in everything we do. Winning trophies is protecting some like the CEO from proper scrutiny as to what he is doing to improve every facet of the club because that is his job.
ATOB, you are correct. But I fundamentally believe that the 51% fan power that the German’s have is the way forwards, and should be looked at by Fifa & uefa.
Football without fans and all that, and as you keep saying the clamour for away tickets is nonsense. The Villa game showed that especially.
No talk of banning the corporate thugs🤑🤑🤑
Will Raith get a fine for their fan setting off a smoke bomb/flare last night ?
Craig 76
I thought the smoke came the Celtic dugout and it was Brendan’s Cuban cigar 😁😁😁
Leggy
Could well of been, he could of taken the night off and left Kennedy(future Celtic manager 😀) in charge.
Wash your mouth out Craig 😳😳😳😳
🤣🤣🤣
TMG
Thanks for doing the delving.
I thought we would be well within the 70% given Celtic played a part in the development of FSR. Forewarned etc.
Going back to last season it was reported in the main stream media that R2ngers spent more on players wages than us!.
That changed this season although the financial sustainability plight of R2ngers as result of FSR was a prime factor.
The more I think about it the more I am convinced the sound principle on which FSR is based is a game.changer and is arguably why Celtic are not signing players on higher wages for 3 or more years when they can get players of required CL quality cheaper in the summer and thereafter.
I mean would anyone buy a car when they have one that works to a reasonable level at £45k when in 6 months the same car would cost £35k. It’s not human nature and I think that is a factor at play in player trading. If KT does sign up it will be on Celtic affordable terms although KTs affection as a supporter is a factor.
As regards the English Champiomship threat FSR will have a part to play in wage deflation IF the sound FSR principle is adopted there.
UEFA FSR only applies to EPL clubs with European ambitions but the EPL have introduced their own domestic version which applies to all EPL clubs.
What I was unaware of until midweek that there is a labour v capital battle going on at the English Championdhip level with get this TWO versions to be installed.
I’ll check back for a link to the article because (my hobby horse) it is important all accurate information is taken into account when arriving at conclusions.
At this point it matters to me that folk take on board the information but I suspect not that many do.
Where ignorance is bliss etc.
I reject the idea FSR will not work because far more clubs will benefit than will lose when it comes to a vote and once a rule is in place complying clubs will do a bit of policing on their own to ensure all clubs comply simply because a rule exists that allows them to complain that never did before.
This is the article that covers events on introducing a salary cap in the Championdhip.

We can’t have it all ways. If we appoint a good manager , with pedigree from a distant league, then surely we accept his knowledge on players from that league. That’s the best form of scouting you can have.
THE GOMBEEN MAN @ 8:35
A very informative post. I have a couple of comments, and a question at the end.
——————-
“Brønby reportedly wanted £15m.
The issue seems to have been about the sell on percentage. If Brønby wanted 66% of the quantum (or even profit) that’s a bit of a game changer. If we had agreed it would of undermined our negotiating position in any future deal and the undermined club’s financial strategy.

——————-
I realize that you have used words like ‘seems’ and ‘apparently’ indicating you are not 100% sure of the above, which is perfectly fine. The negotiations certainly foundered on some significant snag, and given the length of time we have been talking to Brondby, the explanation is plausible. If so, I see no further reason to talk to Brondby in the summer, as their demands are unreasonable. The process has been time wasted which could have been more productively spent elsewhere. On top of that, it is slightly disturbing me that no other team was reported as interested. ( Or they were, and were similarly rebuffed! )
———————————
“We were linked with Kelechi Iheanacho.
Middlesbrough offered to cover the whole salary and the player went there.”
——————————
I think we dodged a bullet here. I watched him a couple of times at Sevilla, and he reminded me strongly of Eduardo. Talented, lazy, and really couldn’t be bothered. It is possible he might experience a renaissance at Middlesbrough, like Jota with us, but to me the move reeked of desperation. As a wise man on here is wont to say, “We’ll see.”
———————
“ If we can turnover £124m last season with wages at £65.6m and still lose out to a club with a turnover of £32.2m and wages at £31.4m there is a problem.
Especially if the targeted player earns in excess of £100k per week.”
——————————
https://capology.com states that Middlesbrough total gross salaries is £17,386,000, or £334,346 per week. https://salarysport.com states they have 62 players in their squad and the highest earning player is Darragh Lenihan at £35,620 per week.
As I write, the first of these sites has just updated to make Iheanacho top at £75,000 per week, and a gross salary of £3.9M, or damn near a quarter of their total.
So, if these sites are correct, Middlesbrough have a quarter of our turnover, and less than half of our wages, and have just made loanee Iheanocho, at £75k per week, their largest earner, at more than double their previous top guy. Wage inequities have previously caused disharmony in UK dressing rooms, yet far greater disparities, and with contracts published to the press, exist in the major US sports, the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and now the MLS.
Here’s my question. Do you think we are moving towards a model more akin to the US?
I’d welcome your thoughts on this.

===========
But we do want it all ways San, that is the problem ,we all see what we want to see and disregard the rest. It is why bringing the rest to attention is important to me.
If I can use the Plato Cave analogy. The shadows on the wall are shadows because they are based on incomplete knowledge that we argue over as fact because of the core belief we each carry based on past experience. In providing more information the shadow gets strengthened until it no longer is a shadow, it becomes real because the judgement we were making based on incomplete information terms changes as a result of being open to receive that information. This is where dialogue comes in.
This goes way beyond football, Twitter is a Cave, main stream media is a cave, social media is a cave in fact it is responsible for most of the shadows we are encouraged to fear, but all I have to counter is a group of folk on SC that use the same media to make the shadows real and so remove the fear.
It is a choice for SC readers to make and that is not limited to those who do engage, it is obvious from some replies that the counter information/thinking are being taken on board. (We’ll see from the old Zen Master and my favourite The Starfish Story)
The choice SC is faced with is do we want to be a place for discussion or a place open to dialogue?
The Decalogue Dialogue has been adapted to help people to overcome difficulties arising from the diverse perspectives and value systems they bring with them into any exchanges of views.
Its aim is to help build bridges and find common ground on which a healthy outcome might be achieved.
Surely building bridges and find common ground to achieve a healthy outcome (wanting it both ways is not healthy) is in the best interest of ALL Celtic supporters.
Please check DIALOGUE DECALOGUE1 – Google Docs and how to engage in it.

Here’s my question. Do you think we are moving towards a model more akin to the US?
==============
You asked this of TMG but if I bring in a technical point to expand understanding: FSR is NOT based on Turnover it is based on football earnings which includes TV money and EPL parachute payments so a true comparison has to be based on comparing on what the football earnings of both actually are.
However as I pointed out in the article about the challenge to FSR by the PFA , at present Middlesbrough have no FSR worries to face until the decision is taken to adopt one or both versions. If domestic FSR (or salary capping) is introduced them Mboro become subject to football earning rules like EPL clubs under both domestic FSR and UEFA FSR for EPL CL qualifying clubs.
As regards moving towards the US model the US to me is the last example of model provider I would chose to follow and I think that is manifesting itself more and more.
Also there is the human nature factor in attachment terms. What makes our football nature different is the sheer emotional attachment we feel for our clubs. Within the human element is a reluctance to share the ticket money we spent with other clubs.
I think that will change the more the interdependent nature of football is absorbed and in any case in introducing FSR , UEFA with the clubs agreement are addressing the imbalance under higher Solidarity payments made possible under the new CL format and can improve there if some further acceptable rebalancing is required.
So for me no chance supporters will forego the deep community aspect that prevails to let US investors take profit that should be invested into the community not away from it. Look at Man Utd under US profit rules.
UEFA is using FSR to prevent the nature of European football being changed irrevocably by US takeover which would render UEFA redundant. Just my penny worth.
Spiders take the lead v Huns at Ibrox.
